13 So he spent the night there. Then he [a]selected from what [b]he had with him a (A)gift for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 16 Then he placed them in the [c]care of his servants, every flock by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on ahead of me, and put a space between flocks.” 17 And he commanded the [d]one in front, saying, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?’ 18 then you shall say, ‘These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a gift sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.’” 19 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the flocks, saying, “In this way you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and you shall say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.’” For he said, “I will appease him with the gift that goes ahead of me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the gift passed on ahead of him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.
22 Now he got up that same night and took his two wives, his two female slaves, and his eleven children, and crossed the shallow place of the (B)Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.
Jacob Wrestles
24 Then Jacob was left alone, and a man (C)wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of [e]Jacob’s hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was dislocated while he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking.” But he said, “(D)I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then (E)he said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but [f]Israel; for you have contended with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29 And (F)Jacob asked him and said, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And he blessed him there. 30 So Jacob named the place [g]Peniel, for he said, “(G)I have seen God face to face, yet my [h]life has been [i]spared.” 31 Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over (H)Penuel, and he was limping on his hip. 32 Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the tendon of the hip which is on the socket of the hip, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the tendon of the hip.
Jacob Meets Esau
33 Then Jacob raised his eyes and looked, and behold, (I)Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children [j]among Leah and Rachel, and the two slave women. 2 He put the slave women and their children [k]in front, and Leah and her children [l]next, and Rachel and Joseph [m]last. 3 But he himself passed on ahead of them and (J)bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, and (K)fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. 5 He raised his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, “[n]Who are these with you?” So he said, “(L)The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” 6 Then the slave women came forward [o]with their children, and they bowed down. 7 And Leah likewise came forward with her children, and they bowed down; and afterward Joseph came forward with Rachel, and they bowed down. 8 And he said, “What do you mean by (M)all this company which I have met?” And he said, “(N)To find favor in the sight of my lord.” 9 But Esau said, “(O)I have plenty, my brother; let what you have be your own.” 10 Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then accept my gift from my hand, [p]for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably. 11 Please accept my [q](P)gift which has been brought to you, (Q)because God has dealt graciously with me and because I have [r]plenty.” So he urged him, and he accepted it.
12 Then [s]Esau said, “Let’s journey on and go, and I will go ahead of you.” 13 But he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are frail and that the flocks and herds that are nursing are [t]a matter of concern to me. And if they are driven hard just one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Please let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will proceed at my leisure, at the pace of the cattle that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord at (R)Seir.”
15 Then Esau said, “Please let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “[u]What need is there? (S)Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 But Jacob journeyed to [v](T)Succoth, and built for himself a house and made booths for his livestock; therefore the place is named Succoth.
Jacob Settles in Shechem
18 Now Jacob came safely to the city of (U)Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from (V)Paddan-aram, and camped before the city. 19 (W)He bought the plot of land where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred [w]pieces of money. 20 Then he erected there an altar and called it [x]El-Elohe-Israel.
The Treachery of Jacob’s Sons
34 Now (X)Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to [y]visit the daughters of the land. 2 When Shechem the son of Hamor (Y)the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her and raped her. 3 But [z]he was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and [aa]spoke tenderly to her. 4 So Shechem (Z)spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.” 5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob said nothing until they came in. 6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard about it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a [ab](AA)disgraceful thing in Israel by [ac]sleeping with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.
8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him [ad]in marriage. 9 And intermarry with us; give your daughters to us and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 So you will live with us, and (AB)the land shall be [ae]open to you; live and (AC)trade in it and (AD)acquire property in it.” 11 Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your sight, and I will give whatever you tell me. 12 Demand of me ever so much bridal payment and gift, and I will give whatever you tell me; but give me the girl [af]in marriage.”
13 But Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, “We cannot do this thing, that is, give our sister to a (AE)man who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. 15 Only on this condition will we consent to you: if you will become like us, in that every male of you will be circumcised, 16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people. 17 But if you do not listen to us to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.”
18 Now their words seemed [ag]reasonable to Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. 19 The young man did not delay to do [ah]this, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. Now he was more respected than all the household of his father. 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the (AF)gate of their city and spoke to the people of their city, saying, 21 “These men are [ai]friendly to us; therefore let them live in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is [aj]large enough for them. We will take their daughters [ak]in marriage, and give our daughters to them. 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised. 23 Will their livestock and their property and all their animals not be ours? Let’s just consent to them, and they will live with us.” 24 (AG)All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
25 Now it came about on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob’s sons—(AH)Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers—each took his sword and came upon the city undetected, and killed every male. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and left. 27 Jacob’s sons came upon those killed and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister. 28 They took their flocks, their herds, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city and that which was in the field; 29 and they captured and looted all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives, even everything that was in the houses. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have (AI)brought trouble on me by (AJ)making me repulsive among the inhabitants of the land, among (AK)the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and [al](AL)since my men are few in number, they will band together against me and [am]attack me, and I will be destroyed, I and my household!” 31 But they said, “Should he [an]treat our sister like a prostitute?”

13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift(A) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,(B) 15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.(C) 16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”(D)
17 He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant(E) Jacob. They are a gift(F) sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”
19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. 20 And be sure to say, ‘Your servant(G) Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts(H) I am sending on ahead;(I) later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”(J) 21 So Jacob’s gifts(K) went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.
Jacob Wrestles With God
22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons(L) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.(M) 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.(N) 24 So Jacob was left alone,(O) and a man(P) wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip(Q) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”(R)
27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,”(S) he answered.
28 Then the man said, “Your name(T) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[a](U) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”(V)
29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”(W)
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”(X) Then he blessed(Y) him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[b] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,(Z) and yet my life was spared.”
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,[c](AA) and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip,(AB) because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.
Jacob Meets Esau
33 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men;(AC) so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.(AD) 2 He put the female servants and their children(AE) in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph(AF) in the rear. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground(AG) seven times(AH) as he approached his brother.
4 But Esau(AI) ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him.(AJ) And they wept.(AK) 5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.
Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.(AL)”
6 Then the female servants and their children(AM) approached and bowed down.(AN) 7 Next, Leah and her children(AO) came and bowed down.(AP) Last of all came Joseph and Rachel,(AQ) and they too bowed down.
8 Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”(AR)
“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,”(AS) he said.
9 But Esau said, “I already have plenty,(AT) my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
10 “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes,(AU) accept this gift(AV) from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God,(AW) now that you have received me favorably.(AX) 11 Please accept the present(AY) that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me(AZ) and I have all I need.”(BA) And because Jacob insisted,(BB) Esau accepted it.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”
13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord(BC) knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young.(BD) If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds(BE) before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.(BF)”
15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”
“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”(BG)
16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.(BH) 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,(BI) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[d]
18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[e](BJ) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem(BK) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[f] he bought from the sons of Hamor,(BL) the father of Shechem,(BM) the plot of ground(BN) where he pitched his tent.(BO) 20 There he set up an altar(BP) and called it El Elohe Israel.[g]
Dinah and the Shechemites
34 Now Dinah,(BQ) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2 When Shechem(BR) son of Hamor(BS) the Hivite,(BT) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.(BU) 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah(BV) daughter of Jacob;(BW) he loved(BX) the young woman and spoke tenderly(BY) to her. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”(BZ)
5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(CA) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.(CB) 7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked(CC) and furious,(CD) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in[h] Israel(CE) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.(CF)
8 But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.(CG) 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.(CH) 10 You can settle among us;(CI) the land is open to you.(CJ) Live in it, trade[i] in it,(CK) and acquire property in it.(CL)”
11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes,(CM) and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride(CN) and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”
13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled,(CO) Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully(CP) as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.(CQ) That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition(CR) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.(CS) 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves.(CT) We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.(CU) 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”
18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored(CV) of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.(CW) 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city(CX) to speak to the men of their city. 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it;(CY) the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.(CZ) 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised,(DA) as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours?(DB) So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.(DC)”
24 All the men who went out of the city gate(DD) agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain,(DE) two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon(DF) and Levi,(DG) Dinah’s brothers, took their swords(DH) and attacked the unsuspecting city,(DI) killing every male.(DJ) 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword(DK) and took Dinah(DL) from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city(DM) where[j] their sister had been defiled.(DN) 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys(DO) and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.(DP) 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children,(DQ) taking as plunder(DR) everything in the houses.(DS)
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble(DT) on me by making me obnoxious(DU) to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land.(DV) We are few in number,(DW) and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?(DX)”

16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
33 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
2 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
3 And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
5 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.
6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
7 And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
8 And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
9 And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.
10 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
11 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
12 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
13 And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.
15 And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
16 So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.
19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.
20 And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.
34 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.
7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter: which thing ought not to be done.
8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.
13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.
19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of their's be our's? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.
30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

Jesus’ Tribute to John
7 As these disciples of John were going away, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into (A)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 [a]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ [b]palaces! 9 [c]But what did you go out to see? (B)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it [d]is written:
11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And (D)from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been treated violently, and violent men take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is (E)Elijah who [f]was to come. 15 (F)The one who has ears to hear, [g]let him hear.
16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children, 17 and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not [h]mourn.’ 18 For John came neither (G)eating nor (H)drinking, and they say, ‘(I)He has a demon!’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a [i]heavy drinker, (J)a friend of tax collectors and [j]sinners!’ And yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
The Unrepenting Cities
20 Then He began to reprimand the cities in which most of His [k](K)miracles were done, because they did not repent. 21 “(L)Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, (M)Bethsaida! For if the [l]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (N)Tyre and (O)Sidon, they would have repented long ago in [m](P)sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless I say to you, (Q)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on (R)the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, (S)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be (T)brought down to (U)Hades! For if the [n]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (V)Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 Nevertheless I say to you that (W)it will be more tolerable for the land of (X)Sodom on the day of judgment, than for you.”
Come to Me
25 [o](Y)At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, (Z)Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (AA)You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants. 26 Yes, (AB)Father, for this way was well pleasing in Your sight. 27 (AC)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father (AD)except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son determines to reveal Him.
28 “(AE)Come to Me, all [p]who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and (AF)learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and (AG)you will find [q]rest for your souls. 30 For (AH)My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”

Woe on Unrepentant Towns(L)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(M) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(N) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(O) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(P) 23 And you, Capernaum,(Q) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[c](R) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(S)
The Father Revealed in the Son(T)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(U) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(V) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(W) by my Father.(X) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(Y)

21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

3 They have all (F)turned aside, together they are corrupt;
There is (G)no one who does good, not even one.
4 Do all the workers of injustice (H)not know,
Who (I)devour my people as they eat bread,
And (J)do not call upon the Lord?
