Jacob se prepara para el encuentro con Esaú

32 Al seguir Jacob su camino, le salieron al encuentro ángeles de Dios. 2 Cuando Jacob los vio, dijo: «Éste es un campamento de Dios.» Así que a aquel lugar lo llamó Majanayin.[a] 3 Jacob envió delante de sí mensajeros a Esaú, su hermano, que estaba en la tierra de Seir, en el campo de Edom, 4 y les dio las siguientes instrucciones:

«Díganle a mi señor Esaú de parte de su siervo Jacob: “Hasta ahora he estado viviendo con Labán. 5 Tengo vacas, asnos y ovejas, y también siervos y siervas. Envío a decir esto a mi señor, para pedirle que me trate con bondad.”»

6 Los mensajeros volvieron a Jacob, y le dijeron:

«Fuimos a ver a tu hermano Esaú, y también él viene a recibirte. Con él vienen cuatrocientos hombres.»

7 Jacob sintió mucho miedo. En su angustia, dividió en dos campamentos a la gente que venía con él, lo mismo que a las ovejas, las vacas y los camellos; 8 y dijo: «Si Esaú viene contra un campamento, y lo ataca, el otro campamento podrá escapar.»

9 También dijo Jacob: «Señor, Dios de mi padre Abrahán y Dios de mi padre Isaac, tú me dijiste: “Vuelve a tu tierra, con tus parientes, y yo te trataré bien.” 10 Yo soy menor que todas las misericordias y que toda la verdad con que has tratado a este siervo tuyo, pues crucé este Jordán solamente con mi cayado, y ahora he llegado a poseer dos campamentos. 11 ¡Por favor, líbrame de la mano de mi hermano Esaú, porque le temo! ¡No sea que venga y hiera a la madre junto con los hijos! 12 Tú has dicho: “Yo te trataré bien, y tu descendencia será como la arena del mar,(A) tan numerosa que no se puede contar.”»

13 Esa noche Jacob durmió allí, y de lo que le vino a la mano tomó un presente para su hermano Esaú: 14 doscientas cabras, veinte machos cabríos, doscientas ovejas, veinte carneros, 15 treinta camellas recién paridas con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, y veinte asnas y diez borricos. 16 A cada uno de sus siervos le entregó una manada, y les dijo: «Adelántense a mí, y dejen un espacio entre una y otra manada.» 17 Al primero le ordenó: «Si mi hermano Esaú te encuentra y te pregunta “¿Quién es tu amo? ¿A dónde vas? ¿Para quién es esto que vas arreando?” 18 Respóndele: “Es un presente que tu siervo Jacob te envía a ti, mi señor Esaú. Mira, él mismo viene atrás de nosotros.”» 19 Al segundo también le dio órdenes, lo mismo que al tercero y a todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas. Les dijo: «Esto es lo que le dirán a Esaú, cuando lo encuentren. 20 Y le dirán también: “Tu siervo Jacob viene atrás de nosotros.”» Y es que pensó: «Voy a calmar su enojo con el presente que va delante de mí. Después de eso lo veré cara a cara. Tal vez me perdone.» 21 Y así, el presente avanzó delante de él, y esa noche se quedó a dormir en el campamento.

Jacob lucha con el ángel en Peniel

22 Pero esa misma noche se levantó, tomó a sus dos mujeres, sus dos siervas y sus once hijos, y cruzó el vado de Jaboc. 23 Los tomó, y los hizo cruzar el arroyo, con todas sus posesiones. 24 De modo que Jacob se quedó solo, y un hombre luchó con él hasta la salida del sol. 25 Pero cuando ese hombre vio que no podía vencerlo, lo golpeó en la coyuntura de su muslo, y en la lucha el muslo de Jacob se descoyuntó. 26 El hombre dijo:

«Déjame ir, porque ya está saliendo el sol.»

Pero Jacob le respondió:

«No te dejaré ir, si no me bendices.»

27 Aquel hombre le dijo:

«¿Cuál es tu nombre?»

Y él respondió: «Jacob».

28 Y el hombre dijo:

«Tu nombre ya no será Jacob,(B) sino Israel;[b] porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.»

29 Entonces Jacob le preguntó:

«Ahora hazme saber tu nombre.»

Y aquel hombre respondió:

«¿Para qué quieres saber mi nombre?»

Y lo bendijo allí. 30 A ese lugar Jacob le puso por nombre «Peniel»,[c] porque dijo: «He visto a Dios cara a cara, y sigo con vida.»

31 El sol salía cuando Jacob, que iba cojeando de la cadera, cruzó Peniel. 32 Por eso hasta el día de hoy los israelitas no comen del tendón que se contrajo, y que está en la coyuntura del muslo; porque aquel hombre golpeó a Jacob en esta parte de su muslo, en el tendón que se contrajo.

32 Jacob siguió su camino, y le salieron al encuentro ángeles de Dios. 2 Y dijo Jacob cuando los vio: Campamento de Dios es este; y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Mahanaim.[a] 3 Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí a Esaú su hermano, a la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom. 4 Y les mandó diciendo: Así diréis a mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y me he detenido hasta ahora; 5 y tengo vacas, asnos, ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío a decirlo a mi señor, para hallar gracia en tus ojos.

6 Y los mensajeros volvieron a Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos a tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene a recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él. 7 Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y se angustió; y distribuyó el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos campamentos. 8 Y dijo: Si viene Esaú contra un campamento y lo ataca, el otro campamento escapará.

9 Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete a tu tierra y a tu parentela, y yo te haré bien; 10 menor soy que todas las misericordias y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; pues con mi cayado pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos campamentos. 11 Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga acaso y me hiera la madre con los hijos. 12 Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y tu descendencia será como la arena del mar,(A) que no se puede contar por la multitud. 13 Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino a la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú: 14 doscientas cabras y veinte machos cabríos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros, 15 treinta camellas paridas con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos. 16 Y lo entregó a sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo a sus siervos: Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada. 17 Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti? 18 entonces dirás: Es un presente de tu siervo Jacob, que envía a mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros. 19 Mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y a todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme a esto hablaréis a Esaú, cuando le hallareis. 20 Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro; quizá le seré acepto. 21 Pasó, pues, el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.

Jacob lucha con el ángel en Peniel

22 Y se levantó aquella noche, y tomó sus dos mujeres, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc. 23 Los tomó, pues, e hizo pasar el arroyo a ellos y a todo lo que tenía. 24 Así se quedó Jacob solo; y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba. 25 Y cuando el varón vio que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y se descoyuntó el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba. 26 Y dijo: Déjame, porque raya el alba. Y Jacob le respondió: No te dejaré, si no me bendices. 27 Y el varón le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob. 28 Y el varón le dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob,(B) sino Israel;[b] porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido. 29 Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y el varón respondió: ¿Por qué me preguntas por mi nombre? Y lo bendijo allí. 30 Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel;[c] porque dijo: Vi a Dios cara a cara, y fue librada mi alma. 31 Y cuando había pasado Peniel, le salió el sol; y cojeaba de su cadera. 32 Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo; porque tocó a Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.

Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau

32 [a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God(A) met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!”(B) So he named that place Mahanaim.[b](C)

3 Jacob sent messengers(D) ahead of him to his brother Esau(E) in the land of Seir,(F) the country of Edom.(G) 4 He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord(H) Esau: ‘Your servant(I) Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban(J) and have remained there till now. 5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants.(K) Now I am sending this message to my lord,(L) that I may find favor in your eyes.(M)’”

6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”(N)

7 In great fear(O) and distress(P) Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,[c](Q) and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8 He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,[d] the group[e] that is left may escape.”

9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham,(R) God of my father Isaac,(S) Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’(T) 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness(U) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff(V) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.(W) 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid(X) he will come and attack me,(Y) and also the mothers with their children.(Z) 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand(AA) of the sea, which cannot be counted.(AB)’”

13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift(AC) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,(AD) 15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.(AE) 16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”(AF)

17 He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant(AG) Jacob. They are a gift(AH) sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”

19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. 20 And be sure to say, ‘Your servant(AI) Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts(AJ) I am sending on ahead;(AK) later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”(AL) 21 So Jacob’s gifts(AM) went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

Jacob Wrestles With God

22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons(AN) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.(AO) 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.(AP) 24 So Jacob was left alone,(AQ) and a man(AR) wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip(AS) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”(AT)

27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,”(AU) he answered.

28 Then the man said, “Your name(AV) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[f](AW) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”(AX)

29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”(AY)

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”(AZ) Then he blessed(BA) him there.

30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,(BB) and yet my life was spared.”

31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,[h](BC) and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip,(BD) because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

Jacob’s Fear of Esau

32 Now as Jacob went on his way, (A)the angels of God met him. 2 And when he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s [a]camp.” So he named that place [b](B)Mahanaim.

3 Then Jacob (C)sent messengers ahead of himself to his brother Esau in the land of (D)Seir, the [c]country of (E)Edom. 4 He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says the following: “I have resided with Laban, and (F)stayed until now; 5 and (G)I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent messengers to tell my lord, (H)so that I may find favor in your sight.”’”

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore (I)he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” 7 Then Jacob was (J)greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies; 8 for he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and [d]attacks it, then the company which is left will escape.”

9 Then Jacob said, “(K)God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, Lord, who said to me, ‘(L)Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will [e]make you prosper,’ 10 [f]I am unworthy (M)of all the [g]favor and of all the [h]faithfulness, which You have shown to Your servant; for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies. 11 (N)Save me, please, (O)from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and [i]attack me and the (P)mothers with the children. 12 For You said, ‘(Q)I will assuredly [j]make you prosper and (R)make your [k]descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be counted.’”

13 So he spent the night there. Then he [l]selected from what [m]he had with him a (S)gift for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 16 Then he placed them in the [n]care of his servants, every flock by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on ahead of me, and put a space between flocks.” 17 And he commanded the [o]one in front, saying, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?’ 18 then you shall say, ‘These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a gift sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.’” 19 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the flocks, saying, “In this way you shall speak to Esau when you find him; 20 and you shall say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.’” For he said, “I will appease him with the gift that goes ahead of me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the gift passed on ahead of him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.

22 Now he got up that same night and took his two wives, his two female slaves, and his eleven children, and crossed the shallow place of the (T)Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.

Jacob Wrestles

24 Then Jacob was left alone, and a man (U)wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of [p]Jacob’s hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was dislocated while he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking.” But he said, “(V)I will not let you go unless you bless me.” 27 So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then (W)he said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but [q]Israel; for you have contended with God and with men, and have prevailed.” 29 And (X)Jacob asked him and said, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And he blessed him there. 30 So Jacob named the place [r]Peniel, for he said, “(Y)I have seen God face to face, yet my [s]life has been [t]spared.” 31 Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over (Z)Penuel, and he was limping on his hip. 32 Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the tendon of the hip which is on the socket of the hip, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the tendon of the hip.
