Abrahán busca esposa para Isaac
24 Abrahán ya era viejo, y muy entrado en años; y el Señor había bendecido a Abrahán en todo. 2 Y Abrahán le dijo a uno de sus criados, el más viejo de todos, y que era el que administraba todo lo que tenía:
«Pon ahora tu mano debajo de mi muslo. 3 Voy a hacer que me jures por el Señor, el Dios de los cielos y la tierra, que no tomarás para mujer de mi hijo a ninguna de las hijas de los cananeos, entre los cuales yo habito. 4 Más bien, irás a mi tierra, con mis parientes, y allí tomarás mujer para mi hijo Isaac.»
5 El criado le respondió:
«Tal vez la mujer no quiera venir conmigo a esta tierra. ¿Debo entonces llevar a tu hijo a la tierra de donde saliste?»
6 Y Abrahán le dijo:
«Ten mucho cuidado de no llevar a mi hijo allá. 7 El Señor, el Dios de los cielos, me sacó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mis parientes; él mismo me habló, y con juramento me dijo: “Esta tierra se la daré a tu descendencia”, así que él enviará a su ángel delante de ti, y de allá tomarás una mujer para mi hijo. 8 Si la mujer no quiere venir contigo, quedarás libre del juramento que me has hecho. ¡Pero de ninguna manera lleves allá a mi hijo!»
9 Entonces el criado puso su mano debajo del muslo de Abrahán, su señor, y le hizo un juramento en cuanto a este asunto; 10 luego tomó diez de los camellos de su señor y se puso en camino. Llevaba consigo todos los mejores regalos que tenía su señor. Cuando llegó a la ciudad de Najor, en Mesopotamia, 11 hizo que los camellos se arrodillaran fuera de la ciudad, junto a un pozo de agua. Era la hora de la tarde en que las jóvenes salen por agua. 12 Entonces dijo:
«Señor, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, te ruego que me concedas tener hoy un buen encuentro. Ten misericordia de mi señor Abrahán. 13 Mírame aquí, junto a la fuente de agua, ahora que las hijas de los hombres de esta ciudad salen por agua. 14 Permite que la joven a quien le diga: “Por favor, baja tu cántaro para que yo beba”, y que me responda: “Bebe, y también les daré de beber a tus camellos”, sea la joven que tú has elegido para tu siervo Isaac. Así sabré que tú has tenido misericordia de mi señor.»
15 Sucedió que, antes de que él acabara de hablar, apareció Rebeca, que había salido con su cántaro al hombro. Rebeca era hija de Betuel, quien era hijo de Milca, la mujer de Najor, el hermano de Abrahán. 16 Esta joven era de aspecto muy hermoso, y aún virgen, pues no había conocido varón; ella bajó a la fuente, llenó su cántaro, y se dispuso a volver. 17 Pero el criado corrió hacia ella y le dijo:
«Te ruego que me des a beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro.»
18 Ella respondió:
«Bebe, señor mío.»
Y presurosa bajó el cántaro que llevaba, y le dio a beber. 19 Cuando acabó de darle de beber, dijo:
«También sacaré agua para tus camellos, hasta que acaben de beber.»
20 Y rápidamente vació su cántaro en el bebedero, y todavía corrió al pozo para sacar agua, y sacó para todos los camellos. 21 El hombre estaba admirado de ella, pero callaba, para saber si el Señor había prosperado su viaje, o no. 22 Cuando los camellos acabaron de beber, el hombre le dio a ella un pendiente de oro que pesaba cinco gramos y dos brazaletes que pesaban cien gramos, 23 y le dijo:
«Dime, por favor, ¿de quién eres hija? ¿Y habrá en la casa de tu padre un lugar donde pasemos la noche?»
24 Ella le respondió:
«Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Milca tuvo de Najor.»
25 Y añadió:
«Además, en nuestra casa hay paja y mucho forraje, y lugar para pasar la noche.»
26 Entonces el hombre se inclinó y adoró al Señor. 27 Dijo:
«Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de mi amo Abrahán, que no le negó a mi amo su misericordia y su verdad, pues me puso el Señor en el camino a la casa de los hermanos de mi amo.»
28 Rebeca corrió a la casa de su madre, y contó allí estas cosas. 29 Ella tenía un hermano que se llamaba Labán, y Labán salió corriendo a ver al hombre, que estaba junto a la fuente. 30 Y es que vio el pendiente y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, cuando dijo: «Así me habló aquel hombre.»
Labán salió a ver a ese hombre, y lo encontró junto a la fuente, con los camellos. 31 Entonces le dijo:
«Bendito del Señor, ¿por qué te quedas afuera? Ven que ya he preparado la casa, y lugar para los camellos.»
32 El hombre fue a la casa, y Labán desató los camellos y les dio paja y forraje. Al hombre y a quienes lo acompañaban les dio agua para que se lavaran los pies, 33 y le sirvieron de comer. Pero él dijo:
«No comeré hasta que haya dicho lo que tengo que decir.»
Y Labán le dijo:
«Habla.»
34 El hombre dijo:
«Yo soy criado de Abrahán. 35 Y el Señor ha bendecido mucho a mi amo, y lo ha engrandecido; le ha dado ovejas, vacas, plata, oro, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos. 36 Sara, la mujer de mi amo, tuvo en su vejez un hijo de mi señor, y mi señor le ha dado a su hijo todo cuanto tiene. 37 Y mi amo me puso bajo juramento. Me dijo: “No tomes como mujer para mi hijo a ninguna de las hijas de los cananeos, en cuya tierra habito; 38 más bien, irás a la casa de mi padre, con mis parientes, y allí tomarás mujer para mi hijo.” 39 Yo le dije: “Tal vez la mujer no querrá seguirme.” 40 Entonces él me respondió: “Yo he andado siempre en presencia del Señor, así que él enviará su ángel para que vaya contigo y prospere tu camino. Y tú tomarás para mi hijo una mujer de mi familia y de la casa de mi padre. 41 Así quedarás libre de mi juramento. Si vas con mi familia, y ellos no te dan a la joven, entonces quedarás libre de mi juramento.” 42 Hoy, al llegar a la fuente, dije: “Señor, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, si tú quieres, prospera el camino por el cual ando. 43 Aquí estoy ahora, junto a la fuente de agua. Permite que la joven que salga por agua, y a la que yo le diga: ‘Por favor, dame de beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro’, 44 y que me responda: ‘Bebe, y sacaré también agua para tus camellos’, que sea ésta la mujer elegida por ti, el Señor, para el hijo de mi señor.” 45 Antes de que yo terminara de hablar en mi corazón, vi que Rebeca salía con su cántaro al hombro, y que bajaba a la fuente y sacaba agua. Entonces le dije: “Te ruego que me des de beber.” 46 Enseguida ella bajó su cántaro, y me dijo: “Bebe, y también les daré de beber a tus camellos.” Y yo bebí, y también a mis camellos les dio de beber. 47 Entonces le pregunté: “¿De quién eres hija?” Y ella me respondió: “Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Najor tuvo con Milca.” Y le puse un pendiente en la nariz, y brazaletes en los brazos; 48 luego me incliné y adoré al Señor. Bendije al Señor, Dios de mi señor Abrahán, por haberme guiado por el camino de verdad para tomar para su hijo la hija del hermano de mi señor. 49 Y ahora, si ustedes van a tratar a mi señor con misericordia y verdad, díganmelo; y si no, díganmelo también; así sabré a qué atenerme.»
50 Labán y Betuel le respondieron así:
«Esto viene del Señor, y no podemos decirte ni bueno ni malo. 51 Aquí tienes a Rebeca; tómala y vete, y que sea la mujer del hijo de tu señor, tal y como lo ha dicho el Señor.»
52 Cuando el criado de Abrahán les oyó decir estas palabras, se inclinó hasta el suelo delante del Señor; 53 luego sacó el criado alhajas de oro y plata, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También a su hermano y a su madre les dio cosas preciosas. 54 Luego él y los varones que venían con él comieron y bebieron, y allí pasaron la noche. Al día siguiente se levantaron, y el criado dijo:
«Envíenme a mi señor.»
55 Pero su hermano y su madre respondieron:
«Que se quede la joven con nosotros por lo menos unos diez días, y después de eso partirá.»
56 Pero él les dijo:
«Ya que el Señor ha prosperado mi camino, no me detengan más. Despídanme, y entonces volveré a mi señor.»
57 Entonces ellos respondieron:
«Llamemos a la joven, y preguntémosle a ella.»
58 Y llamaron a Rebeca, y le dijeron:
«¿Quieres irte con este varón?»
Y ella respondió:
«Sí, quiero irme con él.»
59 Y así, dejaron ir a su hermana Rebeca y a su nodriza, y también al criado de Abrahán y a sus hombres. 60 A Rebeca la bendijeron así:
«Hermana nuestra, que seas la madre de miles y miles, y que tus descendientes conquisten las ciudades de sus enemigos.»
61 Rebeca se levantó entonces, junto con sus doncellas, y montando en los camellos siguieron al criado, el cual tomó a Rebeca y se fue.
62 Isaac, que vivía en el Néguev, regresaba del pozo llamado «El que vive y me ve». 63 Era la hora de la tarde, e Isaac había salido al campo, para meditar. Pero al levantar los ojos, vio que se acercaban los camellos. 64 También Rebeca levantó los ojos, y vio a Isaac. Entonces se bajó del camello, 65 y le preguntó al criado:
«¿Quién es este varón que anda por el campo y viene a nuestro encuentro?»
Y el criado le respondió:
«Es mi señor.»
Entonces ella tomó el velo y se cubrió, 66 y el criado le contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho. 67 Isaac tomó entonces a Rebeca por mujer, y la llevó a la tienda de Sara, su madre, y la amó. Así se consoló Isaac después de la muerte de su madre.

24 Abraham era ya muy viejo, y el Señor lo había bendecido en todo. 2 Un día llamó al más viejo de sus siervos, el que estaba a cargo de todo lo suyo, y le dijo:
—Pon tu mano debajo de mi muslo, 3 y júrame por el Señor, el Dios del cielo y de la tierra, que no dejarás que mi hijo Isaac se case con una mujer de esta tierra de Canaán, donde yo vivo, 4 sino que irás a mi tierra y escogerás una esposa para él entre las mujeres de mi familia.
5 El siervo le contestó:
—Pero si la mujer no quiere venir conmigo, ¿qué hago? ¿Debo entonces llevar a su hijo a la tierra de donde usted salió?
6 Abraham le dijo:
—¡No, no lleves allá a mi hijo! 7 El Señor, el Dios del cielo, que me sacó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mis parientes y me prometió dar esta tierra a mis descendientes, también enviará su ángel delante de ti para que traigas de allá una esposa para mi hijo. 8 Si la mujer no quiere venir contigo, quedarás libre de este compromiso, pero ¡de ninguna manera lleves allá a mi hijo!
9 Entonces el siervo puso la mano bajo el muslo de su amo Abraham, y le juró que haría lo que le había pedido. 10 Después escogió regalos entre lo mejor que su amo tenía, tomó diez de sus camellos y se fue a la ciudad de Nahor, en Mesopotamia. 11 Cuando el siervo llegó a las afueras de la ciudad, ya empezaba a oscurecer. A esa hora las mujeres van a sacar agua. El siervo hizo descansar a los camellos junto a un pozo de agua, 12 y comenzó a orar: «Señor y Dios de mi amo Abraham, haz que hoy me vaya bien, y muéstrate bondadoso con mi amo. 13 Voy a quedarme aquí, junto al pozo, mientras las muchachas de este lugar vienen a sacar agua. 14 Permite que la muchacha a la que yo le diga: “Por favor, baje usted su cántaro para que yo beba”, y que me conteste: “Beba usted, y también les daré agua a sus camellos”, que sea ella la que tú has escogido para tu siervo Isaac. Así podré estar seguro de que has sido bondadoso con mi amo.»
15 Todavía no había terminado de orar, cuando vio que una muchacha venía con su cántaro al hombro. Era Rebeca, la hija de Betuel. Betuel era hijo de Milcá y de Nahor, el hermano de Abraham. 16 Rebeca era muy hermosa, y además virgen; ningún hombre la había tocado. Bajó al pozo, llenó su cántaro, y ya regresaba 17 cuando el siervo corrió a alcanzarla y le dijo:
—Por favor, déjeme usted beber un poco de agua de su cántaro.
18 —Beba usted, señor —contestó ella.
Y en seguida bajó su cántaro, lo sostuvo entre las manos y le dio de beber. 19 Cuando el siervo terminó de beber, Rebeca le dijo:
—También voy a sacar agua para sus camellos, para que beban toda la que quieran.
20 Rápidamente vació su cántaro en el bebedero y corrió varias veces al pozo, hasta que sacó agua para todos los camellos. 21 Mientras tanto el siervo la miraba sin decir nada, pues quería estar seguro de que el Señor había hecho que le fuera bien en su viaje. 22 Cuando los camellos terminaron de beber, el hombre tomó un anillo de oro que pesaba como seis gramos, y se lo puso a ella en la nariz. También le dio dos brazaletes de oro que pesaban más de cien gramos, 23 y le dijo:
—Dígame por favor de quién es usted hija, y si hay lugar en la casa de su padre donde mis hombres y yo podamos pasar la noche.
24 Y ella contestó:
—Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Milcá y de Nahor. 25 En nuestra casa hay lugar para que usted pase la noche, y también suficiente paja y comida para los camellos.
26 Entonces el siervo se arrodilló y adoró al Señor, 27 diciendo: «¡Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de mi amo Abraham, pues ha sido fiel y bondadoso con mi amo, y me ha dirigido en el camino a la casa de sus parientes!»
28 Rebeca fue corriendo a la casa de su madre, a contar todo lo que le había pasado. 29 Tenía ella un hermano llamado Labán, el cual corrió al pozo a buscar al hombre, 30 pues había visto el anillo y los brazaletes que su hermana llevaba en los brazos, y le había oído contar lo que el hombre le había dicho. Labán se acercó al siervo de Abraham, que todavía estaba con los camellos junto al pozo, 31 y le dijo:
—Venga usted, bendito del Señor. ¡Cómo va usted a quedarse aquí afuera, si ya he preparado la casa y un lugar para los camellos!
32 Entonces el siervo fue a la casa. Allí Labán descargó los camellos y les dio de comer, y luego trajo agua para que el siervo y sus compañeros se lavaran los pies.
33 Cuando le sirvieron de comer, el siervo de Abraham dijo:
—Yo no podría comer antes de haber dicho lo que tengo que decir.
—Hable usted —dijo Labán.
34 El siervo dijo:
—Yo soy siervo de Abraham. 35 El Señor ha bendecido mucho a mi amo y lo ha hecho rico: le ha dado ovejas, vacas, oro y plata, siervos, siervas, camellos y asnos. 36 Además, Sara, su esposa, le dio un hijo cuando ya era muy anciana, y mi amo le ha dejado a su hijo todo lo que tiene. 37 Mi amo me hizo jurar, y me dijo: “No dejes que mi hijo se case con una mujer de esta tierra de Canaán, donde yo vivo. 38 Antes bien, ve a la familia de mi padre, y busca entre las mujeres de mi clan una esposa para él.” 39 Y yo le dije: “Mi señor, ¿y si la mujer no quiere venir conmigo?” 40 Entonces él me contestó: “Yo he andado en el camino del Señor, y él enviará su ángel contigo, para que te vaya bien en tu viaje y tomes una esposa para mi hijo de entre las mujeres de mi familia, es decir, de la familia de mi padre. 41 Sólo en caso de que mis parientes no quieran darte la muchacha, quedarás libre del juramento que me has hecho.”
42 »Así fue como hoy llegué al pozo, y en oración le dije al Señor, el Dios de mi amo Abraham: “Si de veras vas a hacer que me vaya bien en este viaje, 43 te ruego que ahora que estoy junto al pozo, pase esto: que la muchacha que venga por agua y a la que yo le diga: Por favor, déjeme usted beber un poco de agua de su cántaro, 44 y que me conteste: Beba usted, y también sacaré agua para sus camellos, que sea ésta la mujer que tú, Señor, has escogido para el hijo de mi amo.” 45 Todavía no terminaba yo de hacer esta oración, cuando vi que Rebeca venía con su cántaro al hombro. Bajó al pozo a sacar agua, y le dije: “Deme usted agua, por favor.” 46 Ella bajó en seguida su cántaro, y me dijo: “Beba usted, y también les daré de beber a sus camellos.” Y ella me dio agua, y también a mis camellos. 47 Luego le pregunté: “¿De quién es usted hija?” y ella me contestó: “Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Nahor y de Milcá.” Entonces le puse un anillo en la nariz y dos brazaletes en los brazos, 48 y me arrodillé y adoré al Señor; alabé al Señor, el Dios de mi amo Abraham, por haberme traído por el camino correcto para tomar la hija del pariente de mi amo para su hijo. 49 Ahora pues, díganme si van a ser buenos y sinceros con mi amo, y si no, díganmelo también, para que yo sepa lo que debo hacer.»
50 Entonces Labán y Betuel le contestaron:
—Todo esto viene del Señor, y nosotros no podemos decirle a usted que sí o que no. 51 Mire usted, aquí está Rebeca; tómela y váyase. Que sea la esposa del hijo de su amo, tal como el Señor lo ha dispuesto.
52 Cuando el siervo de Abraham oyó esas palabras, se arrodilló delante del Señor hasta tocar el suelo con la frente. 53 Luego sacó varios objetos de oro y plata, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También a su hermano y a su madre les hizo regalos. 54 Después él y sus compañeros comieron y bebieron, y pasaron allí la noche. Al día siguiente, cuando se levantaron, el siervo dijo:
—Déjenme regresar a la casa de mi amo.
55 Pero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca le dijeron:
—Que se quede la muchacha con nosotros todavía unos diez días, y después podrá irse con usted.
56 Pero el siervo les dijo:
—No me detengan más. Dios ha hecho que mi viaje haya salido bien, así que déjenme regresar a la casa de mi amo.
57 Entonces ellos contestaron:
—Vamos a llamar a la muchacha, a ver qué dice ella.
58 Llamaron a Rebeca y le preguntaron:
—¿Quieres irte con este hombre?
—Sí —contestó ella.
59 Entonces dejaron ir a Rebeca y a la mujer que la había cuidado siempre, y también al siervo de Abraham y a sus compañeros. 60 Y bendijeron a Rebeca de esta manera:
«Oh, hermana nuestra,
¡que seas madre de muchos millones!
¡Que tus descendientes
conquisten las ciudades de sus enemigos!»
61 Entonces Rebeca y sus siervas montaron en los camellos y siguieron al siervo de Abraham. Fue así como el siervo tomó a Rebeca y se fue de allí.
62 Isaac había vuelto del pozo llamado «El que vive y me ve», pues vivía en la región del Négueb. 63 Había salido a dar un paseo al anochecer. En esto vio que unos camellos se acercaban. 64 Por su parte, Rebeca también miró y, al ver a Isaac, se bajó del camello 65 y le preguntó al siervo:
—¿Quién es ese hombre que viene por el campo hacia nosotros?
—Es mi amo —contestó el siervo.
Entonces ella tomó su velo y se cubrió la cara.
66 El siervo le contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho. 67 Luego Isaac llevó a Rebeca a la tienda de campaña de su madre Sara, y se casó con ella. Isaac amó mucho a Rebeca, y así se consoló de la muerte de su madre.

24 Abraham ya era muy anciano, y Dios lo había bendecido en todo. 2 Un día, Abraham le dijo a su mayordomo:
—Pon tu mano debajo de mi pierna porque me vas a hacer un juramento. 3-4 Aunque vivo entre los cananeos, me vas a jurar por el Dios del cielo y de la tierra, que no casarás a mi hijo Isaac con ninguna mujer de Canaán. Más bien, ve a mi tierra y busca entre mis familiares una esposa para él.
5 Pero el mayordomo le contestó:
—¿Y qué pasa si la mujer no quiere venir conmigo a esta tierra? ¿Debo entonces llevar a tu hijo para que él mismo la busque?
6 Y Abraham le dijo:
—¡Más te vale que no lo hagas! 7 Cuando el Dios del cielo me pidió que dejara la casa de mi padre y mi país, me prometió bajo juramento que esta tierra se la daría a mis descendientes. Así que él enviará delante de ti a su ángel, para que encuentres allá una esposa para mi hijo. 8 Si ella no quiere venir contigo, quedarás libre de tu juramento. ¡Pero de ningún modo permitiré que te lleves a mi hijo!
9 El mayordomo se comprometió con su amo Abraham a cumplir el juramento, 10 y luego de tomar diez camellos y lo mejor que tenía su amo, se puso en marcha hacia el pueblo de Nahor, que está en Mesopotamia. 11 Caía la tarde cuando el mayordomo hizo descansar a los camellos cerca del pozo que está fuera del pueblo. A esa hora las mujeres salían a sacar agua del pozo. 12 Allí el mayordomo oró así:
«Dios de mi amo Abraham, te ruego que seas bueno con mi amo; haz que hoy me vaya bien. 13 Mírame aquí, junto a este pozo. Ahora que las mujeres vienen a sacar agua, 14 permite que la muchacha a quien le pida que me dé a beber agua de su cántaro, no sólo me dé agua a mí sino también a los camellos. Así sabré que has sido bueno con mi amo, y que ella es la mujer que has elegido para Isaac, quien siempre te obedece en todo».
15 Todavía no había terminado de orar el mayordomo cuando llegó Rebeca, con su cántaro al hombro. Era hija de Betuel, y nieta de Milcá y de Nahor, el hermano de Abraham. 16 Rebeca era una muchacha muy hermosa, y soltera. Bajó al manantial y llenó su cántaro, y cuando ella subía, 17 el mayordomo corrió a su encuentro y le dijo:
—Por favor, dame un poco de agua de tu cántaro.
18 Rebeca bajó enseguida el cántaro y le dijo:
—Beba usted.
Y con sus propias manos le dio a beber. 19 Cuando el mayordomo terminó de beber, ella misma dijo:
—Ahora voy a sacar agua para sus camellos, para que beban toda el agua que quieran.
20 Rápidamente vació el cántaro en el bebedero y corrió al pozo para sacar más agua, hasta dar de beber a todos los camellos. 21 Mientras tanto, el mayordomo la miraba sin decir nada, pues quería saber si Dios le había ayudado a encontrar una esposa para Isaac.
22 Cuando los camellos acabaron de beber, el mayordomo puso en la nariz de Rebeca un anillo de oro que pesaba seis gramos. Además, le puso en los brazos dos pulseras de oro que pesaban más de cien gramos. 23 Entonces le preguntó:
—Dime, por favor, ¿quién es tu padre? ¿Crees que mi gente y yo podríamos pasar la noche en su casa?
24-25 Rebeca respondió:
—Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Milcá y de Nahor. En nuestra casa hay lugar para que pasen la noche, y también tenemos abundante comida para los camellos.
26 En ese momento el mayordomo se inclinó y dio gracias a Dios 27 con estas palabras:
«¡Alabado seas, Dios de mi amo Abraham, pues siempre has sido bueno y fiel con mi amo! ¡Has guiado mis pasos hasta la casa de sus familiares!»
28 Al oír esto, Rebeca corrió a su casa para contarle a su madre lo sucedido. 29-30 Su hermano Labán vio el anillo y las pulseras que Rebeca traía puestas, y la oyó contar lo que aquel hombre le había dicho. Entonces salió corriendo a buscar al mayordomo, y lo encontró junto a los camellos, cerca del pozo. 31 Al verlo, Labán le dijo:
«¡Bienvenido! Dios lo ha traído con bien hasta este lugar. Venga usted a mi casa; no se quede aquí afuera. ¡Ya he preparado un lugar para usted, y también para los camellos!»
32 El mayordomo lo acompañó, y una vez en la casa, Labán les dio agua a él y a sus hombres para que se bañaran. A los camellos les quitaron la carga y les dieron de comer. 33 Cuando le sirvieron de comer, el mayordomo dijo:
—No comeré hasta que les cuente por qué estoy aquí.
Labán lo dejó hablar, 34 y el mayordomo dijo:
—Mi amo Abraham 35 es muy rico, pues Dios lo ha bendecido mucho. Le ha dado ovejas, ganado, plata, oro, sirvientes, sirvientas, camellos y burros. 36 Además, él y su esposa Sara tuvieron un hijo, a pesar de ser ya muy ancianos, y a ese hijo mi amo le ha entregado todas sus riquezas. 37 A mí me hizo jurarle que no casaría a su hijo con ninguna mujer de Canaán. 38 Más bien, me pidió venir acá y buscarle esposa entre sus familiares.
39 »Yo le pregunté: “¿Y qué hago si la mujer no quiere acompañarme?” 40 Entonces mi amo dijo: “Toda mi vida he obedecido a Dios, así que él enviará su ángel para que te acompañe y haga que te vaya bien en tu viaje. Pero tú debes buscarle a mi hijo una esposa entre mis familiares. 41 Si ellos no quieren dártela, quedarás libre del juramento que me has hecho”.
42 »Hoy, cuando llegué al pozo, hice esta oración:
“Dios de mi amo Abraham, si tú así lo quieres, haz que me vaya bien en este viaje. 43 Mírame aquí, parado junto a este pozo. Si una muchacha viene a sacar agua, y yo le pido que me dé a beber un poco de agua de su cántaro, 44 y ella acepta darme agua y saca también agua para los camellos, entenderé que ella es la que tú has elegido como esposa para el hijo de mi amo”.
45 »Todavía no terminaba de orar cuando llegó Rebeca con su cántaro al hombro. Bajó y sacó agua, y cuando yo le pedí que me diera de beber, 46 enseguida bajó su cántaro y me dio, lo mismo que a los camellos. Una vez que bebí, 47 le pregunté quién era su padre, y ella me contestó que era Betuel, el hijo de Nahor y Milcá.
»Fue entonces cuando le puse el anillo en la nariz, y las pulseras en los brazos; 48 luego me incliné para adorar y bendecir al Dios de mi amo Abraham, pues me guió directamente hasta la nieta del hermano de mi amo, para tomarla como esposa para su hijo. 49 Ahora bien, díganme si piensan ser fieles con mi amo y tratarlo bien; y si no, díganmelo también; así sabré qué camino tomar.
50 Labán y su familia[a] respondieron:
—Todo esto viene de Dios, y nosotros no podemos decirle a usted ni una cosa ni otra. 51 Pero aquí está Rebeca. Puede usted llevársela, y que se case con el hijo de su amo, ya que así lo ha decidido Dios.
52 Al oír esto, el mayordomo se inclinó hasta el suelo y dio gracias a Dios; 53 luego sacó joyas de oro y plata, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. A su hermano y a su madre también les dio valiosos regalos. 54 Después de eso, él y sus hombres comieron y bebieron, y pasaron la noche allí.
A la mañana siguiente, cuando se levantaron, el mayordomo pidió permiso para volver a la casa de su amo, 55 pero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca respondieron:
—Deje usted que la muchacha se quede con nosotros unos días más, y entonces podrá irse.
56 Pero el mayordomo les rogó:
—¡No me detengan más! Ya Dios me ha dado éxito en mi viaje, así que déjenme volver a la casa de mi amo.
57-58 Ellos llamaron a Rebeca y le preguntaron:
—¿Quieres irte con este hombre?
Como Rebeca respondió que sí, 59 la dejaron ir junto con la mujer que la había cuidado desde niña, el mayordomo y sus hombres. 60 Su familia la despidió con esta bendición:
«Querida hermana nuestra,
deseamos que llegues a tener
miles y miles de descendientes,
y que ellos lleguen a conquistar
las ciudades de sus enemigos».
61 Entonces se levantó Rebeca, junto con sus sirvientas, y montando en los camellos se fueron siguiendo al mayordomo. Así fue como él se llevó a Rebeca.
62 Isaac vivía en el desierto del sur, pero esa tarde llegó hasta el manantial que se llama «Pozo del Dios que vive y todo lo ve». 63 Había salido a dar un paseo por el campo. De pronto, alzó la vista y vio que unos camellos se acercaban. 64 También Rebeca alzó la vista, y al ver a Isaac se bajó del camello 65 y le preguntó al mayordomo:
—¿Quién es aquel hombre que viene por el campo a nuestro encuentro?
El mayordomo respondió:
—¡Es mi amo!
Entonces ella tomó un velo y se cubrió la cara. 66 Y luego de que el mayordomo le contó a Isaac todos los detalles del viaje, 67 Isaac llevó a Rebeca a la tienda de campaña de su madre Sara, y se casó con ella. Así fue como Rebeca llegó a ser su esposa, y él la amó mucho. Esto le ayudó a Isaac a olvidar la muerte de su madre.

24 Abraham was old, and well advanced in age. Yahweh had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please put your hand under my thigh. 3 I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live. 4 But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”
5 The servant said to him, “What if the woman isn’t willing to follow me to this land? Must I bring your son again to the land you came from?”
6 Abraham said to him, “Beware that you don’t bring my son there again. 7 Yahweh, the God of heaven—who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, ‘I will give this land to your offspring—he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 If the woman isn’t willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this oath to me. Only you shall not bring my son there again.”
9 The servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter. 10 The servant took ten of his master’s camels, and departed, having a variety of good things of his master’s with him. He arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 11 He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water. 12 He said, “Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. The daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, ‘Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,’ then she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink,’—let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”
15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher on her shoulder. 16 The young lady was very beautiful to look at, a virgin. No man had known her. She went down to the spring, filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 The servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please give me a drink, a little water from your pitcher.”
18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” She hurried, and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will also draw for your camels, until they have finished drinking.” 20 She hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw, and drew for all his camels.
21 The man looked steadfastly at her, remaining silent, to know whether Yahweh had made his journey prosperous or not. 22 As the camels had done drinking, the man took a golden ring of half a shekel[a] weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold, 23 and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father’s house for us to stay?”
24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She said moreover to him, “We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge in.”
26 The man bowed his head, and worshiped Yahweh. 27 He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, Yahweh has led me on the way to the house of my master’s relatives.”
28 The young lady ran, and told her mother’s house about these words. 29 Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. Laban ran out to the man, to the spring. 30 When he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “This is what the man said to me,” he came to the man. Behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 He said, “Come in, you blessed of Yahweh. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.”
32 The man came into the house, and he unloaded the camels. He gave straw and feed for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told my message.”
Laban said, “Speak on.”
34 He said, “I am Abraham’s servant. 35 Yahweh has blessed my master greatly. He has become great. Yahweh has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, and camels and donkeys. 36 Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master when she was old. He has given all that he has to him. 37 My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, 38 but you shall go to my father’s house, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.’ 39 I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not follow me?’ 40 He said to me, ‘Yahweh, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my relatives, and of my father’s house. 41 Then you will be clear from my oath, when you come to my relatives. If they don’t give her to you, you shall be clear from my oath.’ 42 I came today to the spring, and said, ‘Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, if now you do prosper my way which I go— 43 behold, I am standing by this spring of water. Let it happen, that the maiden who comes out to draw, to whom I will say, “Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,” 44 then she tells me, “Drink, and I will also draw for your camels,”—let her be the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for my master’s son.’ 45 Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 She hurried and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink.’ So I drank, and she also gave the camels a drink. 47 I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands. 48 I bowed my head, and worshiped Yahweh, and blessed Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter for his son. 49 Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. If not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.”
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing proceeds from Yahweh. We can’t speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you. Take her, and go, and let her be your master’s son’s wife, as Yahweh has spoken.”
52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the earth to Yahweh. 53 The servant brought out jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and her mother. 54 They ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed all night. They rose up in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my master.”
55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young lady stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that she will go.”
56 He said to them, “Don’t hinder me, since Yahweh has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.”
57 They said, “We will call the young lady, and ask her.” 58 They called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?”
She said, “I will go.”
59 They sent away Rebekah, their sister, with her nurse, Abraham’s servant, and his men. 60 They blessed Rebekah, and said to her, “Our sister, may you be the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let your offspring possess the gate of those who hate them.”
61 Rebekah arose with her ladies. They rode on the camels, and followed the man. The servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 62 Isaac came from the way of Beer Lahai Roi, for he lived in the land of the South. 63 Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the evening. He lifted up his eyes and looked. Behold, there were camels coming. 64 Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she got off the camel. 65 She said to the servant, “Who is the man who is walking in the field to meet us?”
The servant said, “It is my master.”
She took her veil, and covered herself. 66 The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. He loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

24 Abraham was now very old,(A) and the Lord had blessed(B) him in every way.(C) 2 He said to the senior servant(D) in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,(E) “Put your hand under my thigh.(F) 3 I want you to swear(G) by the Lord, the God of heaven(H) and the God of earth,(I) that you will not get a wife for my son(J) from the daughters of the Canaanites,(K) among whom I am living,(L) 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives(M) and get a wife for my son Isaac.(N)”
5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?(O) Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?(P)”
6 “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,”(Q) Abraham said. 7 “The Lord, the God of heaven,(R) who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land(S) and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring[a](T) I will give this land’(U)—he will send his angel before you(V) so that you can get a wife for my son from there. 8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath(W) of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”(X) 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh(Y) of his master(Z) Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
10 Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels(AA) loaded with all kinds of good things(AB) from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim[b](AC) and made his way to the town of Nahor.(AD) 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well(AE) outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.(AF)
12 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham,(AG) make me successful(AH) today, and show kindness(AI) to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.(AJ) 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink,(AK) and I’ll water your camels too’(AL)—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.(AM) By this I will know(AN) that you have shown kindness to my master.”
15 Before he had finished praying,(AO) Rebekah(AP) came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel(AQ) son of Milkah,(AR) who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AS) 16 The woman was very beautiful,(AT) a virgin;(AU) no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”(AV)
18 “Drink,(AW) my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels(AX) too,(AY) until they have had enough to drink.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.(AZ) 21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.(BA)
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring(BB) weighing a beka[c] and two gold bracelets(BC) weighing ten shekels.[d] 23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you?(BD) Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?(BE)”
24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.(BF)” 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder,(BG) as well as room for you to spend the night.”
26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord,(BH) 27 saying, “Praise be to the Lord,(BI) the God of my master Abraham,(BJ) who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness(BK) to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey(BL) to the house of my master’s relatives.”(BM)
28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.(BN) 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban,(BO) and he hurried out to the man at the spring. 30 As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms,(BP) and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. 31 “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,”(BQ) he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder(BR) were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.(BS) 33 Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.”
“Then tell us,” Laban said.
34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.(BT) 35 The Lord has blessed(BU) my master abundantly,(BV) and he has become wealthy.(BW) He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.(BX) 36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age,(BY) and he has given him everything he owns.(BZ) 37 And my master made me swear an oath,(CA) and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,(CB) 38 but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’(CC)
39 “Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’(CD)
40 “He replied, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully,(CE) will send his angel with you(CF) and make your journey a success,(CG) so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.(CH) 41 You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’(CI)
42 “When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success(CJ) to the journey on which I have come. 43 See, I am standing beside this spring.(CK) If a young woman(CL) comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”(CM) 44 and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.’(CN)
45 “Before I finished praying in my heart,(CO) Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder.(CP) She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’(CQ)
46 “She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’(CR) So I drank, and she watered the camels also.(CS)
47 “I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’(CT)
“She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel(CU) son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.’(CV)
“Then I put the ring in her nose(CW) and the bracelets on her arms,(CX) 48 and I bowed down and worshiped the Lord.(CY) I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham,(CZ) who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.(DA) 49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness(DB) to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”
50 Laban and Bethuel(DC) answered, “This is from the Lord;(DD) we can say nothing to you one way or the other.(DE) 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.(DF)”
52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.(DG) 53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing(DH) and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts(DI) to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.
When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way(DJ) to my master.”
55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so;(DK) then you[e] may go.”
56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success(DL) to my journey. Send me on my way(DM) so I may go to my master.”
57 Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”(DN) 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”
“I will go,”(DO) she said.
59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way,(DP) along with her nurse(DQ) and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed(DR) Rebekah and said to her,
“Our sister, may you increase
to thousands upon thousands;(DS)
may your offspring possess
the cities of their enemies.”(DT)
61 Then Rebekah and her attendants(DU) got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi,(DV) for he was living in the Negev.(DW) 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate,[f](DX) and as he looked up,(DY) he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel(DZ) 65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”
“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil(EA) and covered herself.
66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into the tent(EB) of his mother Sarah,(EC) and he married Rebekah.(ED) So she became his wife, and he loved her;(EE) and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.(EF)
