Promesa del nacimiento de Isaac
18 Después el Señor se le apareció a Abrahán en el encinar de Mamre, mientras él estaba sentado a la entrada de su tienda, en el calor del día. 2 Al levantar los ojos vio que allí, junto a él, había tres varones. Al verlos, rápidamente se levantó de la entrada de su tienda para recibirlos. Se postró en tierra, 3 y dijo:
«Señor, si en verdad he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, te ruego que no te apartes de este siervo tuyo. 4 Mandaré traer un poco de agua, para que ustedes se laven los pies, y luego podrán descansar debajo de un árbol. 5 Traeré también un bocado de pan, para que recobre fuerzas su corazón, y luego seguirán su camino. ¡Para eso han pasado ustedes cerca de este su siervo!»
Y ellos dijeron:
«Haz todo tal y como has dicho.»
6 Entonces Abrahán fue de prisa a la tienda de Sara, y le dijo: «Toma pronto tres medidas de flor de harina, amásala, y cuece unos panes.» 7 Luego corrió Abrahán a donde estaban las vacas y tomó un becerro tierno y bueno, se lo dio al criado, y éste se apresuró a prepararlo. 8 Tomó además mantequilla y leche, y el becerro que había preparado, y poniéndolo ante ellos se quedó a su lado debajo del árbol, mientras ellos comían.
9 Ellos le dijeron:
«¿Dónde está Sara, tu mujer?»
Y él respondió:
«Aquí, en la tienda.»
10 Uno de ellos dijo:
«Ten por seguro que volveré a ti, y conforme al tiempo de gestación Sara tu mujer tendrá un hijo.»(A)
Sara, que estaba a la entrada de la tienda detrás de él, escuchaba todo. 11 Abrahán y Sara eran ya viejos y de edad avanzada, y Sara ya no tenía lo que es costumbre en las mujeres. 12 Por eso Sara se rió consigo misma, y dijo:
«¿Después de haber envejecido voy a tener placer, si también mi señor(B) ya está viejo?»
13 Pero el Señor le dijo a Abrahán:
«¿Por qué se ríe Sara? Ha dicho: “¿Será cierto que voy a dar a luz siendo ya vieja?” 14 ¿Acaso hay para Dios algo que sea difícil?(C) En el momento indicado volveré a ti, y conforme al tiempo de gestación Sara tendrá un hijo.»
15 Sara lo negó, y dijo:
«No me reí. Más bien, tuve miedo.»
Pero él dijo:
«No es cierto. Tú te reíste.»
Abrahán intercede por Sodoma
16 Aquellos varones se fueron de allí, y miraron en dirección a Sodoma. Abrahán los acompañaba. 17 Entonces el Señor dijo:
«¿Acaso voy a ocultarle a Abrahán lo que voy a hacer? 18 ¡Si Abrahán va a ser una nación grande y fuerte, y en él serán bendecidas todas las naciones de la tierra! 19 Yo sé que él ordenará a sus hijos y a sus descendientes que sigan el camino del Señor, y que sean justos y rectos, para que el Señor cumpla en Abrahán su promesa.»
20 Entonces el Señor le dijo:
«Puesto que el clamor contra Sodoma y Gomorra va en aumento, y su pecado se ha agravado demasiado, 21 voy ahora a descender allá, para ver si lo que han hecho corresponde a las quejas que han llegado hasta mí. Si no es así, lo sabré.»
22 Y aquellos varones se apartaron de allí, y fueron hacia Sodoma; pero Abrahán seguía estando delante del Señor. 23 Y se acercó Abrahán y le dijo:
«¿Acaso vas a destruir al justo con el injusto? 24 Tal vez haya cincuenta justos en la ciudad. ¿Acaso destruirás ese lugar, y no lo perdonarás por los cincuenta justos que estén allí adentro? 25 ¡Lejos sea de ti hacer morir al justo con el impío, y tratar al justo como al impío! ¡Jamás hagas tal cosa! ¿Acaso el Juez de toda la tierra no debe hacer lo que es justo?»
26 El Señor respondió:
«Si dentro de la ciudad de Sodoma encuentro a cincuenta justos, por ellos perdonaré a todos los que estén allí.»
27 Abrahán replicó y dijo:
«Aquí estoy ahora, atreviéndome a hablar con mi Señor, aunque sólo soy polvo y ceniza. 28 Pero tal vez falten cinco justos para completar los cincuenta; ¿por faltar esos cinco destruirás toda la ciudad?»
Y el Señor dijo:
«No la destruiré, si encuentro sólo cuarenta y cinco.»
29 Abrahán volvió a hablarle, y dijo:
«Tal vez sólo se hallen cuarenta...»
Y el Señor respondió:
«Aun por esos cuarenta no lo haré.»
30 Abrahán insistió:
«Espero que mi Señor no se enoje, si sigo hablando; pero tal vez sólo se encuentren treinta...»
Y el Señor respondió:
«Aun si encuentro treinta, no lo haré.»
31 Abrahán dijo:
«Aquí estoy ahora, atreviéndome a hablar con mi Señor; tal vez sólo se encuentren veinte...»
Y el Señor contestó:
«Aun por esos veinte, no la destruiré.»
32 Pero Abrahán volvió a decir:
«Espero que mi Señor no se enoje si hablo una vez más; pero tal vez se encuentren sólo diez...»
Y el Señor respondió:
«Aun por esos diez, no la destruiré.»
33 Cuando el Señor terminó de hablar con Abrahán, se fue de allí; y Abrahán volvió a su lugar.

18 Then the Lord appeared to him by [a]the (B)terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 (C)So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; (D)and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, 3 and said, “My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. 4 Please let (E)a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. 5 And (F)I will bring a morsel of bread, that (G)you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, (H)inasmuch as you have come to your servant.”
They said, “Do as you have said.”
6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. 8 So (I)he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.
9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?”
So he said, “Here, (J)in the tent.”
10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you (K)according to the time of life, and behold, (L)Sarah your wife shall have a son.”
(Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.) 11 Now (M)Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and [b]Sarah (N)had passed the age of childbearing. 12 Therefore Sarah (O)laughed within herself, saying, (P)“After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my (Q)lord being old also?”
13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14 (R)Is anything too hard for the Lord? (S)At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”
15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid.
And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”
Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them (T)to send them on the way. 17 And the Lord said, (U)“Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be (V)blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order (W)that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” 20 And the Lord said, “Because (X)the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their (Y)sin is very grave, 21 (Z)I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, (AA)I will know.”
22 Then the men turned away from there (AB)and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 And Abraham (AC)came near and said, (AD)“Would You also (AE)destroy the (AF)righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so (AG)that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! (AH)Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
26 So the Lord said, (AI)“If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”
27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am (AJ)but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?”
So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.”
29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”
30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?”
So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.”
32 Then he said, (AK)“Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”
(AL)And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” 33 So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

18 And the Lord appeared to him by the (A)oaks[a] of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. 2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. (B)When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth 3 and said, “O Lord,[b] if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a (C)little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, 5 while I bring a morsel of bread, that (D)you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—(E)since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” 6 And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs[c] of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. 8 Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
9 They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is (F)in the tent.” 10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you (G)about this time next year, and (H)Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now (I)Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. 12 (J)So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, (K)“After I am worn out, and (L)my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 (M)Is anything too hard[d] for the Lord? (N)At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” 15 But Sarah denied it,[e] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17 The Lord said, (O)“Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be (P)blessed in him? 19 For I have (Q)chosen[f] him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” 20 Then the Lord said, “Because (R)the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, 21 (S)I will go down to see whether they have done altogether[g] according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, (T)I will know.”

Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, (X)so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! (Y)Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” 26 And the Lord said, (Z)“If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
27 Abraham answered and said, (AA)“Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” 31 He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32 Then he said, (AB)“Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. 18 Y APARECIOLE Jehová en el valle de Mamre, estando él sentado á la puerta de su tienda en el calor del día.
2 Y alzó sus ojos y miró, y he aquí tres varones que estaban junto á él: y cuando los vió, salió corriendo de la puerta de su tienda á recibirlos, é inclinóse hacia la tierra,
3 Y dijo: Señor, si ahora he hallado gracia en tus ojos, ruégote que no pases de tu siervo.
4 Que se traiga ahora un poco de agua, y lavad vuestros pies; y recostaos debajo de un árbol,
5 Y traeré un bocado de pan, y sustentad vuestro corazón; después pasaréis: porque por eso habéis pasado cerca de vuestro siervo. Y ellos dijeron: Haz así como has dicho.
6 Entonces Abraham fué de priesa á la tienda á Sara, y le dijo: Toma presto tres medidas de flor de harina, amasa y haz panes cocidos debajo del rescoldo.
7 Y corrió Abraham á las vacas, y tomó un becerro tierno y bueno, y diólo al mozo, y dióse éste priesa á aderezarlo.
8 Tomó también manteca y leche, y el becerro que había aderezado, y púsolo delante de ellos; y él estaba junto á ellos debajo del árbol; y comieron.
9 Y le dijeron: ¿Dónde está Sara tu mujer? Y él respondió: Aquí en la tienda.
10 Entonces dijo: De cierto volveré á ti según el tiempo de la vida, y he aquí, tendrá un hijo Sara tu mujer. Y Sara escuchaba á la puerta de la tienda, que estaba detrás de él.
11 Y Abraham y Sara eran viejos, entrados en días: á Sara había cesado ya la costumbre de las mujeres.
12 Rióse, pues, Sara entre sí, diciendo: ¿Después que he envejecido tendré deleite, siendo también mi señor ya viejo?
13 Entonces Jehová dijo á Abraham: ¿Por qué se ha reído Sara diciendo: Será cierto que he de parir siendo ya vieja?
14 ¿Hay para Dios alguna cosa difícil? Al tiempo señalado volveré á ti, según el tiempo de la vida, y Sara tendrá un hijo.
15 Entonces Sara negó diciendo: No me reí; porque tuve miedo. Y él dijo: No es así, sino que te has reído.
16 Y los varones se levantaron de allí, y miraron hacia Sodoma: y Abraham iba con ellos acompañándolos.
17 Y Jehová dijo: ¿Encubriré yo á Abraham lo que voy á hacer,
18 Habiendo de ser Abraham en una nación grande y fuerte, y habiendo de ser benditas en él todas las gentes de la tierra?
19 Porque yo lo he conocido, sé que mandará á sus hijos y á su casa después de sí, que guarden el camino de Jehová, haciendo justicia y juicio, para que haga venir Jehová sobre Abraham lo que ha hablado acerca de él.
20 Entonces Jehová le dijo: Por cuanto el clamor de Sodoma y Gomorra se aumenta más y más, y el pecado de ellos se ha agravado en extremo,
21 Descenderé ahora, y veré si han consumado su obra según el clamor que ha venido hasta mí; y si no, saberlo he.
22 Y apartáronse de allí los varones, y fueron hacia Sodoma: mas Abraham estaba aún delante de Jehová.
23 Y acercóse Abraham y dijo: ¿Destruirás también al justo con el impío?
24 Quizá hay cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad: ¿destruirás también y no perdonarás al lugar por cincuenta justos que estén dentro de él?
25 Lejos de ti el hacer tal, que hagas morir al justo con el impío y que sea el justo tratado como el impío; nunca tal hagas. El juez de toda la tierra, ¿no ha de hacer lo que es justo?
26 Entonces respondió Jehová: Si hallare en Sodoma cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad, perdonaré á todo este lugar por amor de ellos.
27 Y Abraham replicó y dijo: He aquí ahora que he comenzado á hablar á mi Señor, aunque soy polvo y ceniza:
28 Quizá faltarán de cincuenta justos cinco: ¿destruirás por aquellos cinco toda la ciudad? Y dijo: No la destruiré, si hallare allí cuarenta y cinco.
29 Y volvió á hablarle, y dijo: Quizá se hallarán allí cuarenta. Y respondió: No lo haré por amor de los cuarenta.
30 Y dijo: No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare: quizá se hallarán allí treinta. Y respondió: No lo haré si hallare allí treinta.
31 Y dijo: He aquí ahora que he emprendido el hablar á mi Señor: quizá se hallarán allí veinte. No la destruiré, respondió, por amor de los veinte.
32 Y volvió á decir: No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare solamente una vez: quizá se hallarán allí diez. No la destruiré, respondió, por amor de los diez.
33 Y fuése Jehová, luego que acabó de hablar á Abraham: y Abraham se volvió á su lugar.

The Three Visitors
18 The Lord appeared to Abraham(A) near the great trees of Mamre(B) while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent(C) in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up(D) and saw three men(E) standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.(F)
3 He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(G) my lord,[a] do not pass your servant(H) by. 4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet(I) and rest under this tree. 5 Let me get you something to eat,(J) so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.”
“Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”
6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs[b] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”(K)
7 Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf(L) and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. 8 He then brought some curds(M) and milk(N) and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them.(O) While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
9 “Where is your wife Sarah?”(P) they asked him.
“There, in the tent,(Q)” he said.
10 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year,(R) and Sarah your wife will have a son.”(S)
Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old,(T) and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.(U) 12 So Sarah laughed(V) to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord(W) is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’(X) 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord?(Y) I will return to you at the appointed time next year,(Z) and Sarah will have a son.”(AA)
15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.”
But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
Abraham Pleads for Sodom
16 When the men(AB) got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham(AC) what I am about to do?(AD) 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,(AE) and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[c] 19 For I have chosen him(AF), so that he will direct his children(AG) and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord(AH) by doing what is right and just,(AI) so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”(AJ)
20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom(AK) and Gomorrah is so great(AL) and their sin so grievous(AM) 21 that I will go down(AN) and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”
22 The men(AO) turned away and went toward Sodom,(AP) but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[d](AQ) 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?(AR) 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[e] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?(AS) 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing(AT)—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous(AU) and the wicked alike.(AV) Far be it from you! Will not the Judge(AW) of all the earth do right?”(AX)
26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.(AY)”
27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,(AZ) 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”
“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”
He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”
30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry,(BA) but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”
He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”
He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”
32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more.(BB) What if only ten can be found there?”
He answered, “For the sake of ten,(BC) I will not destroy it.”
33 When the Lord had finished speaking(BD) with Abraham, he left,(BE) and Abraham returned home.(BF)
