Ang Pagpapahayag ng mga Israelita ng Kanilang mga Kasalanan
10 Habang nakaluhod si Ezra na nananalangin sa harapan ng templo ng Dios, umiiyak siya at nagpapahayag ng mga kasalanan ng mga mamamayan ng Israel. Maraming Israelitang lalaki, babae, at mga kabataan ang nakapaligid sa kanya na umiiyak din nang malakas. 2 Pagkatapos, sinabi sa kanya ni Shecania na anak ni Jehiel, na angkan ni Elam, “Hindi kami naging tapat sa Dios natin dahil nagsipag-asawa kami ng mga dayuhang babae na galing sa mga sambayanang nasa paligid natin. Pero sa kabila nito, may pag-asa pa rin ang mga mamamayan ng Israel. 3 Kaya ngayon, susundin namin ang payo nʼyo at ng iba pang gumagalang sa mga utos ng ating Dios. Gagawa kami ng kasunduan sa ating Dios na palalayasin namin ang mga babaeng ito pati na ang kanilang mga anak. Tutuparin namin ang sinasabi ng Kautusan. 4 Tumayo po kayo, dahil tungkulin nʼyo na gabayan kami sa mga bagay na ito. Magpakatatag kayo at gawin ang nararapat. Tutulungan namin kayo.”
5 Kaya tumayo si Ezra at pinanumpa niya ang mga namumunong pari, mga Levita, at ang lahat ng mga Israelita, na gagawin nila ang sinasabi ni Shecania. At nanumpa sila. 6 Pagkatapos, umalis si Ezra sa harapan ng templo ng Dios at pumunta sa kwarto ni Jehohanan na anak ni Eliashib. Pagdating niya roon, hindi siya kumain at uminom, dahil nalulungkot siya dahil hindi naging tapat ang mga Israelitang bumalik mula sa pagkabihag.
7-8 Ipinabatid ng mga pinuno at mga tagapamahala sa mga Israelita sa buong Juda pati na sa Jerusalem na ang lahat ng bumalik galing sa pagkabihag ay magtipon sa Jerusalem. At ang sinumang hindi pupunta doon sa loob ng tatlong araw, kukunin sa kanya ang lahat niyang mga ari-arian at hindi na siya ituturing na kabilang sa mga tao na bumalik galing sa pagkabihag.
9 Kaya sa loob ng tatlong araw, nagtipon ang buong mamamayan ng Juda at Benjamin, at naupo sila doon sa plasa ng templo ng Dios sa Jerusalem. Nangyari ito nang ika-20 araw ng ikasiyam na buwan. Nanginginig ang mga tao dahil napakaseryoso ng pinag-uusapan nila at dahil sa malakas na ulan.
10 Pagkatapos, tumayo si Ezra na pari at sinabi, “Nagkasala kayo dahil nagsipag-asawa kayo ng mga dayuhan. Dahil dito, dinagdagan nʼyo pa ang kasalanan ng Israel. 11 Ngayon, ipahayag nʼyo ang mga kasalanan nʼyo sa Panginoon ng mga ninuno nʼyo, at gawin nʼyo ang kalooban niya. Ibukod nʼyo ang sarili nʼyo sa mga tao sa paligid ninyo, at hiwalayan nʼyo ang mga asawa nʼyong dayuhan.”
12 Sumagot nang malakas ang buong mamamayan, “Tama ka! Gagawin namin ang sinabi mo. 13 Ngunit ang bagay na ito ay hindi matatapos sa isa o dalawang araw lamang dahil napakarami sa amin ang nakagawa ng ganitong kasalanan. Tag-ulan pa ngayon, at hindi namin kayang magpaulan dito sa labas. 14 Ang mga opisyal na lang natin ang magpaiwan dito at mag-asikaso nito para sa buong mamamayan. Papuntahin na lang dito sa takdang oras ang mga nagsipag-asawa ng dayuhan kasama ang mga tagapamahala at mga hukom ng bayan nila. Gawin natin ito upang mapawi ang matinding galit ng Dios sa atin dahil sa bagay na ginawa natin.”
15 Walang sumuway sa planong ito maliban kina Jonatan na anak ni Asahel at Jazea na anak ni Tikva. Sinuportahan din sila nina Meshulam at Shabetai na Levita.
16-17 Tinupad ng mga bumalik sa pagkabihag ang planong iyon. Kaya pumili si Ezra na pari ng mga lalaking pinuno ng mga pamilya, at inilista ang pangalan nila. At nang unang araw ng ikasampung buwan, naupo sila at sinimulan nila ang pagsisiyasat tungkol sa pag-aasawa ng mga Israelita ng mga dayuhang babae. Natapos nila ang pagsisiyasat ng lahat ng kaso nang unang araw ng unang buwan, ng sumunod na taon.
Ang mga Lalaki na Nagsipag-asawa ng mga Dayuhan
18-19 Ito ang mga lalaking nagsipag-asawa ng mga dayuhan, at nangakong hihiwalayan nila ang mga asawa nila: (Naghandog sila ng mga lalaking tupa bilang pambayad sa mga kasalanan nila.)
Sa mga pari:
sina Maaseya, Eliezer, Jarib, at Gedalia, na galing sa pamilya ni Jeshua na anak ni Jozadak at ang mga kapatid niya;
20 sina Hanani at Zebadia, na galing sa pamilya ni Imer;
21 sina Maaseya, Elias, Shemaya, Jehiel at Uzia, na galing sa pamilya ni Harim;
22 sina Elyoenai, Maaseya, Ishmael, Natanael, Jozabad, at Elasa, na galing sa pamilya ni Pashur.
23 Mula sa mga Levita:
sina Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaya (na tinatawag din na Kelita), Petahia, Juda, at Eliezer.
24 Mula sa mga musikero:
si Eliashib.
Mula sa mga guwardya ng mga pintuan ng templo ay sina:
Shalum, Telem, at Uri.
25 Mula sa iba pang mga Israelita:
sina Ramia, Izia, Malkia, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malkia, at Benaya, na galing sa pamilya ni Paros;
26 sina Matania, Zacarias, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremat, at Elias, na galing sa pamilya ni Elam;
27 sina Elyoenai, Eliashib, Matania, Jeremot, Zabad, at Asisa, na galing sa pamilya ni Zatu;
28 sina Jehohanan, Hanania, Zabai, at Atlai, na galing sa pamilya ni Bebai;
29 sina Meshulam, Maluc, Adaya, Jashub, Sheal, at Jeremot, na galing sa pamilya ni Bani;
30 sina Adna, Kelal, Benaya, Maaseya, Matania, Bezalel, Binui, at Manase, na galing sa pamilya ni Pahat Moab;
31-32 sina Eliezer, Ishya, Malkia, Shemaya, Simeon, Benjamin, Maluc at Shemaria, na galing sa pamilya ni Harim;
33 sina Matenai, Matata, Zabad, Elifelet, Jeremai, Manase at Shimei, na galing sa pamilya ni Hashum;
34-37 sina Maadai, Amram, Uel, Benaya, Bedia, Keluhi, Vania, Meremot, Eliashib, Matania, Matenai at Jaasu, na galing sa pamilya ni Bani;
38-42 sina Shimei, Shelemia, Natan, Adaya, Macnadebai, Shasai, Sharai, Azarel, Shelemia, Shemaria, Shalum, Amaria at Jose, na galing sa pamilya ni Binui;
43 sina Jeyel, Matitia, Zabad, Zebina, Jadai, Joel at Benaya, na galing sa pamilya ni Nebo.
44 Silang lahat ang nagsipag-asawa ng mga dayuhang babae, at ang iba sa kanila ay may mga anak sa mga babaeng ito.[a]

The Plan for Ending Mixed Marriages
10 While Ezra was down on his knees in front of God's temple, praying with tears in his eyes and confessing the sins of the people of Israel, a large number of men, women, and children gathered around him and cried bitterly.
2 Shecaniah son of Jehiel from the family of Elam said:
Ezra, we have disobeyed God by marrying these foreign women. But there is still hope for the people of Israel, 3 if we follow your advice and the advice of others who truly respect the laws of God. We must promise God that we will divorce our foreign wives and send them away, together with their children.
4 Ezra, it's up to you to do something! We will support whatever you do. So be brave!
5 Ezra stood up and made the chief priests, the Levites, and everyone else in Israel swear that they would follow the advice of Shecaniah. 6 Then Ezra left God's temple and went to spend the night in the living quarters of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. He felt sorry because of what the people had done, and he did not eat or drink a thing.
7-8 The officials and leaders sent a message to all who had returned from Babylonia and were now living in Jerusalem and Judah. This message told them to meet in Jerusalem within three days, or else they would lose everything they owned and would no longer be considered part of the people that had returned from Babylonia.
9 Three days later, on the twentieth day of the ninth month,[a] everyone from Judah and Benjamin came to Jerusalem and sat in the temple courtyard. It was a serious meeting, and they sat there, trembling in the rain.
10 Ezra the priest stood up and said:
You have broken God's Law by marrying foreign women, and you have made the whole nation guilty! 11 Now you must confess your sins to the Lord God of your ancestors and obey him. Divorce your foreign wives and don't have anything to do with the rest of the foreigners who live around here.
12 Everyone in the crowd shouted:
You're right! We will do what you say. 13 But there are so many of us, and we can't just stay out here in this downpour. A lot of us have sinned by marrying foreign women, and the matter can't be settled in only a day or two.
14 Why can't our officials stay on in Jerusalem and take care of this for us? Let everyone who has sinned in this way meet here at a certain time with leaders and judges from their own towns. If we take care of this problem, God will surely stop being so terribly angry with us.
15 Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah were the only ones who objected, except for the two Levites, Meshullam and Shabbethai.
16 Everyone else who had returned from exile agreed with the plan. So Ezra the priest chose men[b] who were heads of the families, and he listed their names. They started looking into the matter on the first day of the tenth month,[c] 17 and they did not finish until the first day of the first month[d] of the next year.
The Men Who Had Foreign Wives
18-19 Here is a list of the priests who had agreed to divorce their foreign wives and to sacrifice a ram as a sin offering:
Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah from the family of Joshua son of Jozadak and his brothers; 20 Hanani and Zebadiah from the family of Immer; 21 Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah from the family of Harim; 22 Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah from the family of Pashhur.
23 Those Levites who had foreign wives were: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (also known as Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
24 Eliashib, the musician, had a foreign wife.
These temple guards had foreign wives:
Shallum, Telem, and Uri.
25 Here is a list of the others from Israel who had foreign wives:
Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Hashabiah,[e] and Benaiah from the family of Parosh;
26 Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah from the family of Elam;
27 Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza from the family of Zattu;
28 Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai from the family of Bebai;
29 Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Jeremoth from the family of Bani;
30 Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh from the family of Pahath Moab;
31-32 Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah from the family of Harim;
33 Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei from the family of Hashum;
34-37 Maadai, Amram, Uel, Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhi, Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu from the family of Bani;
38-42 Shimei, Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah, Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai, Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah, Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph from the family of Binnui;[f]
43 Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah from the family of Nebo.
44 These men divorced their foreign wives, then sent them and their children away.[g]
