Chapter 10
The People’s Response. 1 While Ezra was praying and acknowledging their guilt as he wept and prostrated himself in front of the temple of God, a vast assemblage of men, women, and children gathered around him as the people wept profusely. 2 Then Shecaniah, the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra: “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples of this land. However, in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel. 3 Let us now make a covenant with our God to send away all these wives and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commandments of our God. Let it be done in accordance with the law.[a] 4 Rise up, then, for the matter is in your hands. We will support you. Therefore, have courage and take action!”
5 Then Ezra rose to his feet and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath to do what had been said. In unison they took the oath. 6 Then Ezra departed from his place before the house of God and entered the room of Jehohanan, the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night without eating food or drinking water, because he was in mourning over the betrayal by the exiles.
7 A proclamation was issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem that all of the exiles were to assemble in Jerusalem, 8 and that those who failed to appear within three days, as specified by the officials and the elders, would forfeit their property and be excluded from the assembly of the exiles.
9 All the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together in Jerusalem three days later, on the twentieth day of the ninth month. All the people sat down in the open square before the house of God, greatly distressed because of the matter at hand and because they had no shelter from the heavy rain. 10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them: “You have been unfaithful in marrying foreign wives, thus adding to Israel’s guilt. 11 Now confess to the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the people of the land and from foreign women.”
12 Then all those who had assembled replied loudly, saying in unison: “We shall do as you say. 13 However, there are many people here; it is the rainy season, and we cannot stay out in the open. Besides, this is something that cannot be resolved in one or two days, since those of us who have sinned in this regard comprise a vast number.
14 “Therefore, permit our officials to represent the entire community, and let all those in our towns who have married foreign wives present themselves at designated times, accompanied by the elders and the judges for each town, until the fierce anger of our God at what has occurred has been turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan, the son of Asahel, and Jahzeiah, the son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai, the Levites, opposed this proposal.[b]
16 The Guilty. The exiles did as had been proposed, while Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, representing their families, each of them designated by name. They met in sessions to examine the matter, beginning with the first day of the tenth month. 17 By the first day of the first month they had passed judgment on all the men who had married foreign women.
18 Among the members of priestly families, the following were found to have married foreign women: of the sons of Jeshua, son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah, 19 who pledged to dismiss their wives, and their guilt offering was a ram from the flock for their guilt;
20 of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah; 21 of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah; 22 of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah;
23 of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (also called Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer;
24 of the singers: Eliashib, and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.
25 Among the Israelites: of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah; 26 of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah; 27 of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza;
28 of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai; 29 of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Jeremoth; 30 of the sons of Pahath-moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh;
31 of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, 32 Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah; 33 of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei; 34 of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel 35 Benaiah, Bedaiah, Cheluhi, 36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, 37 Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu; 38 of the sons of Binnui: Shimei, 39 Shelemiah, Nathan, and Adaiah; 40 of the sons of Zachai: Shashai, Sharai, 41 Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah, 42 Shallum, Amariah, Joseph; 43 of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, Benaiah.
44 All these had married foreign woman but sent them away with their children.

Confession of Improper Marriages
10 Now (A)while Ezra was praying, and while he was confessing, weeping, and bowing down (B)before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept very (C)bitterly. 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have (D)trespassed[a] against our God, and have taken pagan wives from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel in spite of this. 3 Now therefore, let us make (E)a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who (F)tremble at (G)the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the (H)law. 4 Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. (I)Be of good courage, and do it.”
5 Then Ezra arose, and made the leaders of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel (J)swear an oath that they would do according to this word. So they swore an oath. 6 Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he (K)ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity.
7 And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the descendants of the captivity, that they must gather at Jerusalem, 8 and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the instructions of the leaders and elders, all his property would be confiscated, and he himself would be separated from the assembly of those from the captivity.
9 So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and (L)all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of heavy rain. 10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have [b]transgressed and [c]have taken pagan wives, adding to the guilt of Israel. 11 Now therefore, (M)make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; (N)separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives.”
12 Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, “Yes! As you have said, so we must do. 13 But there are many people; it is the season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have transgressed in this matter. 14 Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until (O)the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.” 15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and (P)Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support.
16 Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain (Q)heads of the fathers’ households, were set apart by the fathers’ households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17 By the first day of the first month they finished questioning all the men who had taken pagan wives.
Pagan Wives Put Away
18 And among the sons of the priests who had taken pagan wives the following were found of the sons of (R)Jeshua the son of [d]Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19 And they (S)gave their promise that they would put away their wives; and being (T)guilty, they presented a ram of the flock as their (U)trespass offering.
20 Also of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah; 21 of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah; 22 of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23 Also of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
24 Also of the singers: Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

Trennung von den heidnischen Frauen
10 Während Esra vor dem Tempel kniete und Gott die Schuld seines Volkes unter Tränen bekannte, sammelten sich um ihn sehr viele Männer, Frauen und Kinder aus Israel. Auch sie weinten heftig. 2 Schechanja, der Sohn von Jehiël, aus der Sippe Elam sagte zu Esra:
»Ja, wir sind unserem Gott untreu geworden, weil wir heidnische Frauen geheiratet haben. Doch auch jetzt gibt es für Israel noch Hoffnung: 3 Lasst uns mit unserem Gott einen Bund schließen und schwören, uns von den heidnischen Frauen und ihren Kindern zu trennen. Wir werden tun, was du und die anderen, die Ehrfurcht vor Gottes Geboten haben, uns sagen. Das Gesetz des Herrn muss befolgt werden! 4 Und nun steh auf und nimm die Angelegenheit selbst in die Hand. Wir werden dich dabei unterstützen. Sei mutig und entschlossen!«
5 Da stand Esra auf. Er ließ alle führenden Männer der Priester, der Leviten und des ganzen Volkes schwören, nach Schechanjas Rat zu handeln. 6 Dann verließ Esra den Platz vor dem Haus Gottes und ging in die Tempelkammer von Johanan, Eljaschibs Sohn. Dort blieb er die Nacht über,[a] ohne etwas zu essen und zu trinken, denn er trauerte über die Sünde der Israeliten.
7-8 Auf Beschluss der Sippenoberhäupter und führenden Männer wurde in Jerusalem und in ganz Juda folgende Botschaft verbreitet: »Alle aus der Verbannung zurückgekehrten Israeliten haben sich innerhalb von drei Tagen in Jerusalem einzufinden. Wer der Aufforderung nicht folgt, wird aus der Gemeinde ausgeschlossen, und sein gesamter Besitz wird eingezogen.« 9 Da kamen alle Männer aus den Stämmen Juda und Benjamin vor Ablauf des dritten Tages nach Jerusalem. Es war der 20. Tag des 9. Monats. Die Versammelten saßen auf dem Tempelvorplatz. Sie hatten große Angst und zitterten vor Kälte, denn es regnete stark.
10 Esra, der Priester, stand auf und sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr seid Gott untreu geworden. Ihr habt heidnische Frauen geheiratet und so noch größere Schuld auf Israel geladen. 11 Bekennt jetzt dem Herrn, dem Gott eurer Vorfahren, eure Sünden! Und dann tut, was er von euch erwartet: Sondert euch ab von den anderen Völkern im Land, trennt euch von euren heidnischen Frauen!«
12 Alle Versammelten riefen: »Du hast recht! Was du uns gesagt hast, müssen wir tun! 13 Aber wir sind zu viele, außerdem ist Regenzeit. Wir können nicht im Freien bleiben. Die Angelegenheit lässt sich auch nicht in ein oder zwei Tagen regeln. Zu viele sind davon betroffen. 14 Die Oberhäupter unseres Volkes sollen hierbleiben und die ganze Versammlung vertreten. Alle, die heidnische Frauen geheiratet haben, sollen an einem bestimmten Tag mit den führenden Männern und Richtern ihres Ortes vor ihnen erscheinen. Erst wenn wir alles in Ordnung gebracht haben, wird Gott seinen glühenden Zorn wieder von uns abwenden.«
15 Alle waren einverstanden, bis auf Jonatan, der Sohn von Asaël, und Jachseja, der Sohn von Tikwa. Sie wurden von Meschullam und dem Leviten Schabbetai unterstützt. 16-17 Doch die Israeliten setzten ihren Beschluss in die Tat um. Der Priester Esra wählte einige Sippenoberhäupter aus, die alle Fälle untersuchen sollten, in denen jüdische Männer nichtjüdische Frauen geheiratet hatten. Am 1. Tag des 10. Monats begannen sie damit, und am 1. Tag des 1. Monats waren sie fertig.
18-19 Es folgt ein Verzeichnis der Männer, die mit heidnischen Frauen verheiratet waren. Sie gaben ihre Hand darauf, sich von diesen Frauen zu trennen, und brachten je einen Schafbock als Schuldopfer dar.

The People’s Confession of Sin
10 While Ezra was praying and confessing,(A) weeping(B) and throwing himself down before the house of God, a large crowd of Israelites—men, women and children—gathered around him. They too wept bitterly. 2 Then Shekaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam,(C) said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful(D) to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.(E) 3 Now let us make a covenant(F) before our God to send away(G) all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law. 4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”
5 So Ezra rose up and put the leading priests and Levites and all Israel under oath(H) to do what had been suggested. And they took the oath. 6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he was there, he ate no food and drank no water,(I) because he continued to mourn over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
7 A proclamation was then issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem for all the exiles to assemble in Jerusalem. 8 Anyone who failed to appear within three days would forfeit all his property, in accordance with the decision of the officials and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
9 Within the three days, all the men of Judah and Benjamin(J) had gathered in Jerusalem. And on the twentieth day of the ninth month, all the people were sitting in the square before the house of God, greatly distressed by the occasion and because of the rain. 10 Then Ezra(K) the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful; you have married foreign women, adding to Israel’s guilt.(L) 11 Now honor[a] the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and do his will. Separate yourselves from the peoples around you and from your foreign wives.”(M)
12 The whole assembly responded with a loud voice:(N) “You are right! We must do as you say. 13 But there are many people here and it is the rainy season; so we cannot stand outside. Besides, this matter cannot be taken care of in a day or two, because we have sinned greatly in this thing. 14 Let our officials act for the whole assembly. Then let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at a set time, along with the elders and judges(O) of each town, until the fierce anger(P) of our God in this matter is turned away from us.” 15 Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah, supported by Meshullam and Shabbethai(Q) the Levite, opposed this.
16 So the exiles did as was proposed. Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, one from each family division, and all of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to investigate the cases, 17 and by the first day of the first month they finished dealing with all the men who had married foreign women.

18 Among the descendants of the priests, the following had married foreign women:(R)
From the descendants of Joshua(S) son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah. 19 (They all gave their hands(T) in pledge to put away their wives, and for their guilt they each presented a ram from the flock as a guilt offering.)(U)
