Chapter 41
1 Then he brought me into the sanctuary and measured the pilasters. They were six cubits wide on each side. 2 The width of the entrance was ten cubits, and the walls on either side of the entrance were five cubits each. Then he measured the length of the nave, which was fifty cubits, while its width was twenty cubits.
3 Then he went into the inner room and measured the pilasters at the entrance; they were two cubits. The width of the entrance was six cubits, and the walls at either side of the entrance were seven cubits. 4 Beyond the nave, he measured the length of the inner sanctuary, which was twenty cubits, and its width, which was also twenty cubits, after which he said to me, “This is the Holy of Holies.”
5 Then he measured the wall of the temple, which was six cubits thick. The width of the side chambers was four cubits all around the temple. 6 The side chambers were on three levels, one above the other, with thirty chambers on each level. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple that were designed to serve as supports for the side chambers, but there were no supports in the wall of the temple itself.
7 The passageway leading upward to the side chambers became broader from story to story, for the structure surrounding the temple was constructed in successive stages, so that the width of the cells increased from one story to the next. One ascended from the lowest story to the highest story by means of the middle one.
8 I also noted that there was a raised pavement encircling the temple all around. This formed the foundation of the side chambers, measuring a full rod, six cubits high. 9 The thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits. Between the cells of the temple 10 and the chambers of the court, there was an open space, twenty cubits wide, surrounding the temple on every side.
11 The side chambers had entrances to the open space, one entrance on the north side and one on the south side. The width of the free space was five cubits all around. 12 On the western side, the building that faced the temple yard was seventy cubits wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.
13 Then, he measured the temple, whose length was one hundred cubits. 14 The temple courtyard and the buildings with its walls were also one hundred cubits. 15 Next, he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard, and together with its walls on either side, it came to one hundred cubits.
The Temple Interior. The inner nave of the temple and the inner room and outer vestibule 16 were paneled with precious wood from the floor up to the windows and thresholds, and the windows were covered with latticework. 17 The wood extended up to the lintel of the door, even to the outer sanctuary. And on all the walls throughout the inner room and the nave there was a pattern 18 that depicted cherubim and palm trees, with one palm tree between every pair of cherubim.
Each cherub had two faces: 19 a human face turned toward the palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion turned toward the palm tree on the other side. 20 From the floor to the lintel above the door, the cherubim and the palm trees were carved on the wall. 21 The doorposts of the temple were square.
In front of the sanctuary, there was something that resembled 22 an altar of wood, three cubits high and two cubits long. Its corners, its base, and its sides were of wood. He said to me, “This is the table of the Lord.” 23 The nave and the holy place each had a double door. 24 The double doors each had two hinged leaves, two leaves for each door.
25 Carved upon the doors of the nave were cherubim and palm trees, like those carved in the walls. Also, there was a wooden lattice over the vestibule. 26 On both sides of the vestibule were recessed windows and palm trees.

2 And the breadth of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits: and the breadth, twenty cubits.
3 Then went he inward, and measured the post of the door, two cubits; and the door, six cubits; and the breadth of the door, seven cubits.
4 So he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits; and the breadth, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said unto me, This is the most holy place.
5 After he measured the wall of the house, six cubits; and the breadth of every side chamber, four cubits, round about the house on every side.
6 And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.
7 And there was an enlarging, and a winding about still upward to the side chambers: for the winding about of the house went still upward round about the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.
8 I saw also the height of the house round about: the foundations of the side chambers were a full reed of six great cubits.
9 The thickness of the wall, which was for the side chamber without, was five cubits: and that which was left was the place of the side chambers that were within.
10 And between the chambers was the wideness of twenty cubits round about the house on every side.
11 And the doors of the side chambers were toward the place that was left, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south: and the breadth of the place that was left was five cubits round about.
12 Now the building that was before the separate place at the end toward the west was seventy cubits broad; and the wall of the building was five cubits thick round about, and the length thereof ninety cubits.
13 So he measured the house, an hundred cubits long; and the separate place, and the building, with the walls thereof, an hundred cubits long;
14 Also the breadth of the face of the house, and of the separate place toward the east, an hundred cubits.
15 And he measured the length of the building over against the separate place which was behind it, and the galleries thereof on the one side and on the other side, an hundred cubits, with the inner temple, and the porches of the court;
16 The door posts, and the narrow windows, and the galleries round about on their three stories, over against the door, cieled with wood round about, and from the ground up to the windows, and the windows were covered;
17 To that above the door, even unto the inner house, and without, and by all the wall round about within and without, by measure.
18 And it was made with cherubims and palm trees, so that a palm tree was between a cherub and a cherub; and every cherub had two faces;
19 So that the face of a man was toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side: it was made through all the house round about.
20 From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm trees made, and on the wall of the temple.
21 The posts of the temple were squared, and the face of the sanctuary; the appearance of the one as the appearance of the other.
22 The altar of wood was three cubits high, and the length thereof two cubits; and the corners thereof, and the length thereof, and the walls thereof, were of wood: and he said unto me, This is the table that is before the Lord.
23 And the temple and the sanctuary had two doors.
24 And the doors had two leaves apiece, two turning leaves; two leaves for the one door, and two leaves for the other door.
25 And there were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubims and palm trees, like as were made upon the walls; and there were thick planks upon the face of the porch without.
26 And there were narrow windows and palm trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the porch, and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks.

41 Hierna bracht hij mij naar de centrale ruimte van de tempel en mat de pilaren op die de toegang vormden. Zij waren 2,70 meter in doorsnee. 2 De ingang van de hal was 4,50 meter breed en ruim 2,25 meter diep. De centrale ruimte zelf was 18 meter lang en 9 meter breed. 3 Toen ging hij de kamer aan het einde van de centrale ruimte binnen en mat de pilaren die daar bij de ingang stonden. Deze waren 90 centimeter dik en de toegang was 2,70 meter breed met een gang van 3,15 meter diep erachter. 4 De kamer zelf was 9 meter lang en 9 meter breed. ‘Dit,’ vertelde hij mij, ‘is het Heilige der Heiligen.’
5 Toen mat hij de muur van de tempel en kwam op een muurdikte van 2,70 meter, met een rij vertrekken langs de buitenkant. Elk vertrek was 1,80 meter breed. 6 Deze vertrekken waren verdeeld over drie verdiepingen boven elkaar, van elk dertig vertrekken. Het hele bouwsel was voorzien van steunbalken en stond los van de tempelmuur. 7 Elke verdieping was breder dan die eronder, omdat de tempelmuur bovenaan smaller was dan onderaan. Elke verdieping was bereikbaar door een trap aan de kant van de tempel. 8 Ik zag dat de tempel op een verhoogd terras was gebouwd en dat de onderste laag vertrekken een strook van 2,70 meter van het terras besloeg. 9 De buitenmuur van deze vertrekken was 2,25 meter dik en tussen de muur 10 en de andere vertrekken, iets lager in de binnenste voorhof, bevond zich een strook van 9 meter die helemaal rond de tempel liep. 11 Twee deuren leidden vanaf de verdiepingen naar de vrije ruimte van het terras van 2,25 meter. De ene deur aan de noordkant, de andere aan de zuidkant.
12 Aan de westkant stond een groot gebouw dat uitkeek over het tempelplein. Het was 31,50 meter breed en 40,50 meter lang. De muren van dit gebouw waren 2,25 meter dik. 13 Hierna mat hij de tempel en de haar omringende ruimten op. De oppervlakte was 45 meter in het vierkant. 14 De binnenste voorhof aan de oostzijde van de tempel was eveneens 45 meter breed 15,16 en hetzelfde gold voor het gebouw aan de westzijde van de tempel, inclusief de muren ervan. De centrale ruimte van de tempel, het Heilige der Heiligen en de hal waren voorzien van panelen en alle drie hadden zij afgeschermde vensters. De binnenmuren van de tempel waren betimmerd met hout, zowel onder als boven de vensters. 17,18 De muur boven de deur naar het Heilige der Heiligen was ook betimmerd met hout. De muren waren versierd met afbeeldingen van cherubs, ieder met twee gezichten, en met palmbomen tussen de cherubs. 19,20 Een menselijk gezicht keek naar de palmboom aan de ene kant en het andere gezicht—dat van een leeuw—keek naar de palmboom aan de andere kant. Zo was de hele binnenmuur van de tempel versierd met cherubs en palmbomen. 21 De deuren van de centrale ruimte hadden vierkante deurposten en voor het Heilige der Heiligen stond iets dat op een altaar leek, 22 maar het was gemaakt van hout. Dit altaar was 90 centimeter in het vierkant en 1,35 meter hoog, de hoeken, het voetstuk en de zijkanten waren van hout. ‘Dit,’ vertelde hij mij, ‘is de tafel die voor de Here staat.’ 23 Zowel de centrale ruimte als het Heilige der Heiligen hadden dubbele deuren, 24 elk met twee openklappende helften. 25 De deuren die naar de centrale ruimte leidden, waren versierd met cherubs en palmbomen, net als de muren. In de hal was een houten overkapping aangebracht. 26 De muren van de hal waren ook voorzien van versieringen met engelen en palmbomen en ook de vertrekken aan de buitenkant hadden een houten overkapping.

41 Then the man brought me to the main hall(A) and measured the jambs; the width of the jambs was six cubits[a] on each side.[b] 2 The entrance was ten cubits[c] wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were five cubits[d] wide. He also measured the main hall; it was forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.[e](B)
3 Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance; each was two cubits[f] wide. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were seven cubits[g] wide. 4 And he measured the length of the inner sanctuary; it was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits across the end of the main hall.(C) He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.(D)”
5 Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was six cubits thick, and each side room around the temple was four cubits[h] wide. 6 The side rooms were on three levels, one above another, thirty(E) on each level. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports were not inserted into the wall of the temple.(F) 7 The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway(G) went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.
8 I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the length of the rod, six long cubits. 9 The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick. The open area between the side rooms of the temple 10 and the priests’ rooms was twenty cubits wide all around the temple. 11 There were entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one on the north and another on the south; and the base adjoining the open area was five cubits wide all around.
12 The building facing the temple courtyard on the west side was seventy cubits[i] wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.[j]
13 Then he measured the temple; it was a hundred cubits[k] long, and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14 The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, was a hundred cubits.(H)
15 Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, including its galleries(I) on each side; it was a hundred cubits.
The main hall, the inner sanctuary and the portico facing the court, 16 as well as the thresholds and the narrow windows(J) and galleries around the three of them—everything beyond and including the threshold was covered with wood. The floor, the wall up to the windows, and the windows were covered.(K) 17 In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary and on the walls at regular intervals all around the inner and outer sanctuary 18 were carved(L) cherubim(M) and palm trees.(N) Palm trees alternated with cherubim. Each cherub had two faces:(O) 19 the face of a human being toward the palm tree on one side and the face of a lion toward the palm tree on the other. They were carved all around the whole temple.(P) 20 From the floor to the area above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the main hall.
21 The main hall(Q) had a rectangular doorframe, and the one at the front of the Most Holy Place was similar. 22 There was a wooden altar(R) three cubits[l] high and two cubits square[m]; its corners, its base[n] and its sides were of wood. The man said to me, “This is the table(S) that is before the Lord.” 23 Both the main hall(T) and the Most Holy Place had double doors.(U) 24 Each door had two leaves—two hinged leaves(V) for each door. 25 And on the doors of the main hall were carved cherubim and palm trees like those carved on the walls, and there was a wooden overhang on the front of the portico. 26 On the sidewalls of the portico were narrow windows with palm trees carved on each side. The side rooms of the temple also had overhangs.(W)
