Ezekiel 39

39 ‘Son of man, you must tell my message to Gog to warn him. Say to him, “This is what the Almighty Lord says: Listen! I am your enemy, Gog, prince of Meshech and Tubal. ²I will turn you around and I will pull you along. I will bring you from the far away places in the north to attack the mountains of Israel. ³Then I will knock your bow out of your left hand. I will cause your arrows to fall out of your right hand. ⁴You will fall to the ground on Israel's mountains. You, your soldiers and the people who are with you will all die there. Vultures and wild animals will eat your dead bodies. ⁵Your bodies will lie in the fields. I, the Almighty Lord, have said that this will happen.

⁶I will send fires to burn in Magog. They will burn the people who live safely in towns on the coast of the sea. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

⁷My people, Israel will know that my name is holy. No longer will I let them say bad things about me. And the nations round you will know that I, the Lord am the holy God in Israel. ⁸I promise that I will cause this to happen. You can be sure that this day will come, says the Lord God.

I told you that this day would come.

⁹Then those who live in Israel's towns will go out. They will pick up the weapons and they will burn them. They will burn the small and large shields, the heavy sticks, the throwing sticks and the sharp pointed sticks (swords). They will use them to make their fires. They will have enough wood for seven years of fires. ¹⁰They will not have to go into the fields or forests to find wood. They will take away the things from those who took their things, says the Lord God.

¹¹They will bury Gog in the valley east of the sea. They will bury Gog and all his armies there. So men will not be able to walk through this valley. They will call it the valley of Hamon Gog (Gog's army).

¹²Israel's people will need seven months to bury all the dead bodies. Then the land will be clean. ¹³All the people in the country will bury the dead bodies. They will always remember that day, the day that I won the fight. They will give me glory, says the Lord God.

¹⁴They will choose some men to clean the land. They will travel through all the country. Other men will bury the dead bodies that remain on the ground. They will begin to do this at the end of the seven months. ¹⁵The men who walk through the country will find dead men's bones. They will put a sign by each one. Then the men who bury the bodies will bury them in the valley of Hamon Gog. ¹⁶(A town called Hamonah is also there.) That is how they will make the land clean.”

¹⁷Son of man, this is what the Lord God says: Shout to all kinds of birds and wild animals, “Come here from all the country to eat the meal that I have prepared for you. It is a great sacrifice on Israel's mountains. There you will eat meat and you will drink blood. ¹⁸You will eat the meat of great men and you will drink the blood of kings. You will eat them like the fat sheep, cows and animals from Bashan that you eat. ¹⁹At this sacrifice, you will eat so much fat that you cannot eat any more. You will drink so much blood that you become drunk. ²⁰I will give you horses and their riders to eat. I will give you great men and many kinds of soldiers to eat,” says the Lord God.

²¹I will show my glory to all the nations. They will see that I can punish people. And they will know that I decide how and when to punish them. ²²From that time and for all the time after that, Israel's people will know that I am the Lord their God. ²³And the nations will know that I sent Israel's people away from their country. They will know that I punished my people because of their sin. They had not been faithful to me so I turned away from them. I let their enemies take them and kill them with swords. ²⁴I punished them because they had not kept themselves clean from sin. I hid myself from them because they had done so many evil things.’

²⁵So this is what the Lord God says. ‘Now I will bring back Jacob (Israel) from the countries where his people are prisoners. I will be kind to all Israel's people. And I will make them see that I am holy. ²⁶They will forget that they were ashamed. They will forget that they failed to keep their promises to me. That was when they lived in a safe country. In that country, nobody made them afraid. ²⁷I will bring them back from the lands where their enemies took them. The nations will see what I have done. So all the nations will know that I am holy. ²⁸Then Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. I sent my people away to far countries. But I will bring them all back to their own country. I will not leave any behind. ²⁹No longer will I turn away from them. I will pour my Spirit over Israel's people, says the Lord God.’

Ezekiel 39

39 “And you, ^(A)son of man, ^(B)prophesy against ^(C)Gog and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, ^(D)I am against you, O Gog, ^(E)chief prince of ^(F)Meshech^[a] and ^(G)Tubal. ²^(H)And I will turn you about and drive you forward,^[b] and bring you up from ^(I)the uttermost parts of the north, and lead you against the ^(J)mountains of Israel. ³Then ^(K)I will strike your bow from your left hand, and ^(L)will make your arrows drop out of your right hand. ⁴^(M)You shall fall on ^(N)the mountains of Israel, you and all your ^(O)hordes and the peoples who are with you. ^(P)I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. ⁵You shall fall in the open field, for ^(Q)I have spoken, declares the Lord God. ⁶^(R)I will send fire on ^(S)Magog and on those ^(T)who dwell securely in ^(U)the coastlands, and ^(V)they shall know that I am the Lord.

⁷“And ^(W)my holy name I will make known in the midst of my people Israel, and ^(X)I will not let my holy name be profaned anymore. And ^(Y)the nations shall know that I am ^(Z)the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. ⁸^(AA)Behold, it is coming and it will be brought about, declares the Lord God. That is the day ^(AB)of which I have spoken.

⁹“Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and ^(AC)make fires of the weapons and burn them, shields and bucklers, bow and arrows, ^(AD)clubs^[c] and spears; and they will make fires of them for seven years, ¹⁰so that they will not need to take wood out of the field or cut down any out of the forests, for ^(AE)they will make their fires of the weapons. ^(AF)They will seize the spoil of those who despoiled them, and plunder those who plundered them, declares the Lord God.

¹¹“On that day I will give to ^(AG)Gog a place for burial in Israel, the Valley of the Travelers, east of the sea. It will block the travelers, for there Gog and all his multitude will be buried. It will be called the Valley of ^(AH)Hamon-gog.^[d] ¹²For ^(AI)seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, in order ^(AJ)to cleanse the land. ¹³All the people of the land will bury them, and it will bring them renown on the day that ^(AK)I show my glory, declares the Lord God. ¹⁴They will set apart men to travel through the land regularly and bury those travelers remaining on the face of the land, so as ^(AL)to cleanse it. At^[e] the end of ^(AM)seven months they will make their search. ¹⁵And when these travel through the land and anyone sees a human bone, then he shall set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of ^(AN)Hamon-gog. ¹⁶(Hamonah^[f] is also the name of the city.) Thus shall they cleanse the land.

¹⁷“As for you, ^(AO)son of man, thus says the Lord God: ^(AP)Speak to ^(AQ)the birds of every sort and to ^(AR)all beasts of the field: ‘Assemble and come, gather from all around to ^(AS)the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you, a great sacrificial feast on the mountains of Israel, and you shall eat flesh and drink blood. ¹⁸^(AT)You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth—of rams, of lambs, and of he-goats, of bulls, all of them ^(AU)fat beasts of Bashan. ¹⁹And you shall eat fat till you are filled, and drink blood till you are drunk, at the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you. ²⁰And you shall be filled at my table with horses and charioteers, with mighty men and all kinds of warriors,’ declares the Lord God.

²¹“And ^(AV)I will set my glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see ^(AW)my judgment that I have executed, and ^(AX)my hand that I have laid on them. ²²^(AY)The house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God, from that day forward. ²³And ^(AZ)the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they dealt so treacherously with me that ^(BA)I hid my face from them and ^(BB)gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword. ²⁴I dealt with them ^(BC)according to their uncleanness and their transgressions, and hid my face from them.

The Lord Will Restore Israel

²⁵“Therefore thus says the Lord God: Now ^(BD)I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on ^(BE)the whole house of Israel, and ^(BF)I will be jealous for my holy name. ²⁶They shall ^(BG)forget their shame and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when ^(BH)they dwell securely in their land with ^(BI)none to make them afraid, ²⁷^(BJ)when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies' lands, ^(BK)and through them have vindicated my holiness in the sight of many nations. ²⁸^(BL)Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then assembled them into their own land. I will leave none of them remaining among the nations anymore. ²⁹^(BM)And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when ^(BN)I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”

Gog’s Armies Destroyed

39 “And ^(A)you, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, ^[a]the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal; ²and I will ^(B)turn you around and lead you on, ^(C)bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. ³Then I will knock the bow out of your left hand, and cause the arrows to fall out of your right hand. ⁴^(D)You shall ^[b]fall upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; ^(E)I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. ⁵You shall ^[c]fall on ^[d]the open field; for I have spoken,” says the Lord God. ⁶^(F)“And I will send fire on Magog and on those who live ^[e]in security in ^(G)the coastlands. Then they shall know that I am the Lord. ⁷^(H)So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them ^(I)profane My holy name anymore. ^(J)Then the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. ⁸^(K)Surely it is coming, and it shall be done,” says the Lord God. “This is the day ^(L)of which I have spoken.

⁹“Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the ^[f]javelins and spears; and they will make fires with them for seven years. ¹⁰They will not take wood from the field nor cut down any from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; ^(M)and they will plunder those who plundered them, and pillage those who pillaged them,” says the Lord God.

The Burial of Gog

¹¹“It will come to pass in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea; and it will obstruct travelers, because there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. Therefore they will call it the Valley of ^[g]Hamon Gog. ¹²For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, ^(N)in order to cleanse the land. ¹³Indeed all the people of the land will be burying, and they will gain ^(O)renown for it on the day that ^(P)I am glorified,” says the Lord God. ¹⁴“They will set apart men regularly employed, with the help of ^[h]a search party, to pass through the land and bury those bodies remaining on the ground, in order ^(Q)to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make a search. ¹⁵The search party will pass through the land; and when anyone sees a man’s bone, he shall ^[i]set up a marker by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon Gog. ¹⁶The name of the city will also be ^[j]Hamonah. Thus they shall ^(R)cleanse the land.” ’

A Triumphant Festival

¹⁷“And as for you, son of man, thus says the Lord God, ^(S)‘Speak to every sort of bird and to every beast of the field:

^(T)“Assemble yourselves and come;
Gather together from all sides to My ^(U)sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you,
A great sacrificial meal ^(V)on the mountains of Israel,
That you may eat flesh and drink blood.
¹⁸^(W)You shall eat the flesh of the mighty,
Drink the blood of the princes of the earth,
Of rams and lambs,
Of goats and bulls,
All of them ^(X)fatlings of Bashan.
¹⁹You shall eat fat till you are full,
And drink blood till you are drunk,
At My sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you.
²⁰^(Y)You shall be filled at My table
With horses and riders,
^(Z)With mighty men
And with all the men of war,” says the Lord God.

Israel Restored to the Land

²¹^(AA)“I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgment which I have executed, and ^(AB)My hand which I have laid on them. ²²^(AC)So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day forward. ²³^(AD)The Gentiles shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity; because they were unfaithful to Me, therefore ^(AE)I hid My face from them. I ^(AF)gave them into the hand of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. ²⁴^(AG)According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I have dealt with them, and hidden My face from them.” ’

²⁵“Therefore thus says the Lord God: ^(AH)‘Now I will bring back the captives of Jacob, and have mercy on the ^(AI)whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name— ²⁶^(AJ)after they have borne their shame, and all their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, when they ^(AK)dwelt safely in their own land and no one made them afraid. ²⁷^(AL)When I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and I ^(AM)am hallowed in them in the sight of many nations, ²⁸^(AN)then they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who sent them into captivity among the nations, but also brought them back to their land, and left none of them ^[k]captive any longer. ²⁹^(AO)And I will not hide My face from them anymore; for I shall have ^(AP)poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,’ says the Lord God.”

39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog^(A) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of^[a] Meshek^(B) and Tubal.^(C) ²I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north^(D) and send you against the mountains of Israel.^(E) ³Then I will strike your bow^(F) from your left hand and make your arrows^(G) drop from your right hand. ⁴On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds^(H) and to the wild animals.^(I) ⁵You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(J) ⁶I will send fire^(K) on Magog^(L) and on those who live in safety in the coastlands,^(M) and they will know^(N) that I am the Lord.

And they will plunder^(U) those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(V)

¹¹“‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried^(W) there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog.^[b]^(X)

¹²“‘For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.^(Y) ¹³All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory^(Z) will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord. ¹⁴People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.

“‘After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. ¹⁵As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, ¹⁶near a town called Hamonah.^[c] And so they will cleanse the land.’

¹⁷“Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird^(AA) and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood.^(AB) ¹⁸You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.^(AC) ¹⁹At the sacrifice^(AD) I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. ²⁰At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.^(AE)

²¹“I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.^(AF) ²²From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. ²³And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.^(AG) ²⁴I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them.^(AH)

²⁵“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob^[d]^(AI) and will have compassion^(AJ) on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name.^(AK) ²⁶They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety^(AL) in their land with no one to make them afraid.^(AM) ²⁷When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations.^(AN) ²⁸Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them^(AO) to their own land, not leaving any behind.^(AP) ²⁹I will no longer hide my face^(AQ) from them, for I will pour out my Spirit^(AR) on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(AS)”
