30 And the word of the Lord was made to me, and he said,

²Son of man, prophesy thou, and say, The Lord God saith these things, Yell ye, Woe! woe! to the day,

³for the day is nigh; and the day of the Lord nigheth, the day of a cloud. The time of heathen men shall be (The time of the heathen shall be);

⁴and a sword shall come into Egypt, and dread shall be in Ethiopia, when wounded men shall fall down in Egypt, and the multitude thereof shall be taken away, and the foundaments thereof shall be destroyed. (and a sword shall come into Egypt, and fear shall be in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall down in Egypt, and the multitude there shall be taken away, and its foundations shall be destroyed.)

⁵Ethiopia, and Libya, and Lydians, and all the residue common people, and Chub, and the sons of the land of bond of peace, shall fall down by sword with them. (Ethiopia, and Libya, and the Lydians, and all the rest of the common people, and Chub, and the sons of the land of the covenant, shall fall down by the sword with them.)

⁶The Lord God saith these things, And they that underset Egypt shall fall down, and the pride of the lordship thereof shall be destroyed (and the pride of its power shall be destroyed); from the tower of Syene they shall fall by sword therein, saith the Lord God of hosts.

⁷And they shall be destroyed in the midst of lands made desolate, and the cities thereof shall be in the midst of cities forsaken (and its cities shall be in the midst of deserted cities).

⁸And they shall know, that I am the Lord God, when I shall give fire in Egypt (when I shall set Egypt on fire), and all the helpers thereof shall be all-broken.

⁹In that day messengers shall go out from my face in ships with three orders of oars, to all-break, [or destroy,] the trust of Ethiopia; and dread shall be in them (as) in the day of Egypt, for without doubt it shall come. (On that day messengers shall go out from before me in ships with three orders of oars, to all-break, or to destroy, the confidence of Ethiopia; and fear shall be upon them like in the day of Egypt, for without doubt it shall come.)

¹⁰The Lord God saith these things, And I shall make to cease the multitude of Egypt in the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. (The Lord God saith these things, And I shall make an end of the multitude of Egypt by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon.)

¹¹He and his people with him, the strongest men of heathen men, shall be brought, to lose the land; and they shall draw out their swords on Egypt, and they shall fill the land with slain men. (He and his people with him, the strongest men of the heathen, shall be brought to destroy the land; and they shall draw out their swords against Egypt, and they shall fill the land with the slain.)

¹²And I shall make dry the bottoms of floods, and I shall give the land in(to) the hand of the worst men; and I shall destroy the land, and the fullness thereof in the hand of aliens; I the Lord spake. (And I shall dry up the bottoms of the rivers, or the riverbeds, and I shall give the land into the hands, or into the power, of the worst people; and I shall destroy the land, and its fullness, by the hands of foreigners, or of strangers; I the Lord spoke.)

¹³The Lord God saith these things, And I shall lose simulacra, and I shall make idols to cease from Memphis, and a duke of the land of Egypt shall no more be. And I shall give dread in the land of Egypt, (The Lord God saith these things, And I shall destroy the idols, and I shall make the idols to cease to exist in Noph, and a prince, or a leader, shall no more be in the land of Egypt. And I shall bring fear into the land of Egypt,)

¹⁴and I shall lose, [or destroy,] the land of Pathros. And I shall give fire in Tanis, and I shall make my dooms in Alexandria. (and I shall destroy the land of Pathros. And I shall set fire to Zoan, and I shall bring in my judgements upon No.)

¹⁵And I shall shed out mine indignation on Pelusium, the strength of Egypt; and I shall slay the multitude of Alexandria, (And I shall pour out my indignation upon Sin, the strength of Egypt; and I shall kill the multitude of No,)

¹⁶and I shall give fire in Egypt. Pelusium, as a woman travailing of child, shall have sorrow, and Alexandria shall be destroyed, and in Memphis shall be each day’s anguishes. (and I shall set fire to Egypt. Sin, like a woman labouring with child, shall have sorrow, and No shall be destroyed, and in Noph shall be each day’s anguishes.)

¹⁷The young men of Heliopolis and of Bubastis shall fall down by sword, and those cities shall be led captives (and these cities shall go into captivity).

¹⁸And in Tahpanhes the day shall wax black, when I shall all-break there the sceptres of Egypt (when I shall all-break there the yoke of Egypt), and the pride of the power thereof shall fail therein. A cloud shall cover it; forsooth the daughters thereof shall be led into captivity,

¹⁹and I shall make dooms in Egypt (and I shall bring in my judgements upon Egypt); and they shall know, that I am the Lord.

²⁰And it was done in the eleventh year, in the first month, in the seventh day of the month (on the seventh day of the month), the word of the Lord was made to me, and he said,

²¹Thou, son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and lo! it is not wrapped [about], that health should be restored thereto, that it should be bound with clothes (that it should be bound with a dressing), and wound (about) with linen clothes, and that he might hold (a) sword (again), when he had received strength.

²²Therefore the Lord God saith these things, Lo! I to Pharaoh, king of Egypt; I shall make less his strong arm but broken, and I shall cast down the sword from his hand. (And so the Lord God saith these things, Lo! I am against Pharaoh, the king of Egypt; I shall make less, or I shall break, both his arms, his strong arm, and his broken arm, and I shall throw down the sword from his hand.)

²³And I shall scatter Egypt among heathen men, and I shall winnow them in lands. (And I shall scatter the Egyptians among the heathen, and I shall winnow them into many lands.)

²⁴And I shall strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and I shall give my sword in the hand of him; and I shall break the arms of Pharaoh, and men slain before his face shall wail by wailings. (And I shall strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and I shall put my sword into his hand; but I shall break the arms of Pharaoh, and he shall wail with the wailings of a gravely wounded man before him.)

²⁵And I shall strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and the arms of Pharaoh shall fall down. And they shall know, that I am the Lord, when I shall give my sword in(to) the hand of the king of Babylon; and he shall stretch forth it on the land of Egypt. (Yea, I shall strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall down. And they shall know, that I am the Lord, when I shall put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon; and he shall stretch it forth upon the land of Egypt.)

²⁶And I shall scatter Egypt into nations, and I shall winnow them into lands (And I shall scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and I shall winnow them into other lands); and they shall know, that I am the Lord.

Those Who Support Egypt Will Fall

30 The word of Yahweh came again to me saying, ²“Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“^(A)Wail, ‘Alas for the day!’
³For the day is near,
Even ^(B)the day of Yahweh is near;
It will be a day of ^(C)clouds,
A time of doom for the nations.
⁴A sword will come upon Egypt,
And anguish will be in ^[a]Ethiopia;
When the slain fall in Egypt,
They ^(D)take away her multitude,
And her foundations are pulled down.

⁵^[b]Ethiopia, Put, Lud, all ^[c]^(E)Arabia, ^[d]Libya, and the ^[e]people of the land ^[f]that is in covenant will fall with them by the sword.”

⁶‘Thus says Yahweh,

“Indeed, those who support ^(F)Egypt will fall,
And the pride of her strength will come down;
From Migdol to Syene
They will fall within her by the sword,”
Declares Lord Yahweh.
⁷“They will be desolate
In the ^(G)midst of the desolated lands;
And her cities will be
In the midst of the cities laid waste.
⁸And they will ^(H)know that I am Yahweh,
When I set a ^(I)fire in Egypt
And all her helpers are broken.

⁹On that day ^(J)messengers will go forth from Me in ships to frighten ^(K)secure ^[g]Ethiopia; and ^(L)anguish will be on them as on the day of Egypt; for behold, it is coming!”

¹⁰‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“^(M)I will also make the multitude of Egypt cease
By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
¹¹He and his people with him,
^(N)The most ruthless of the nations,
Will be brought in to make the land a ruin;
And they will draw their swords against Egypt
And fill the land with the slain.
¹²Moreover, I will make the ^(O)canals of the Nile dry
And ^(P)sell the land into the hands of evil men.
And I will make the land desolate,
As well as its fullness,
By the hand of strangers; I, Yahweh, have spoken.”

¹³‘Thus says Lord Yahweh,

“I will also ^(Q)destroy the idols
And make the ^[h]images cease from ^[i]^(R)Memphis.
And there will no longer be a prince in the land of Egypt;
And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
¹⁴I will make ^(S)Pathros desolate,
Set a fire in ^(T)Zoan,
And execute judgments on ^[j]^(U)Thebes.
¹⁵I will pour out My wrath on ^[k]Sin,
The strong defense of Egypt;
I will also cut off the multitude of ^[l]Thebes.
¹⁶I will set a fire in Egypt;
^[m]Sin will writhe in anguish;
^[n]Thebes will be breached,
And ^[o]Memphis will have ^[p]distresses daily.
¹⁷The choice men of ^[q]^(V)On and of Pi-beseth
Will fall by the sword,
And ^[r]the women will go into captivity.
¹⁸In ^(W)Tehaphnehes the day will ^[s]be ^(X)dark
When I ^(Y)break there the bars of the yoke of Egypt.
Then the pride of her strength will cease in her;
A cloud will cover her,
And her daughters will go into captivity.
¹⁹Thus I will ^(Z)execute judgments on Egypt,
And they will know that I am Yahweh.”’”

Yahweh Scatters the Egyptians

²⁰In the ^(AA)eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, ²¹“Son of man, I have ^(AB)broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and behold, it has not been ^(AC)bound up to be given healing ^[t]or wrapped with a bandage, that it may be strong to seize the sword. ²²Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘Behold, I am ^(AD)against Pharaoh king of Egypt and will break his arms, both the strong and the ^(AE)broken; and I will make the sword ^(AF)fall from his hand. ²³I will ^(AG)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands. ²⁴For I will ^(AH)strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put ^(AI)My sword in his hand; and I will break the arms of Pharaoh so that he will groan before him with the groanings of a wounded man. ²⁵Thus I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall. Then they will know that I am Yahweh, when I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he ^(AJ)stretches it out against the land of Egypt. ²⁶When I scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands, then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”

A funeral song for Egypt

30 The Lord gave this message to me: ²‘Son of man, prophesy to the people. Say to them, “This is what the Almighty Lord says:

Weep and cry aloud, ‘Help! The day of great trouble is coming!’
³Yes, that day will be very soon. It is the day of the Lord.
It will be a day of dark clouds,
when the Lord will punish the nations.
⁴An enemy army will attack Egypt.
The people of Ethiopia will be afraid.
Many people in Egypt will die in the battle.
Enemies will carry away Egypt's riches.
They will knock down Egypt's buildings.
⁵Soldiers from other nations will also die in the battle.
They are soldiers from Ethiopia, Put, Lydia, Libya, and Arabia,
as well as men who belong to my own people.

⁶This is what the Lord says:

All the people who help Egypt will die in the battle.
Egypt will no longer be proud of her great power.
Egypt's soldiers will die everywhere, from Migdol to Aswan.

That is what the Almighty Lord says.

⁷Egypt will become like a desert among other deserts.
Its cities will become heaps of stones.
⁸I will burn Egypt with fire.
I will destroy all those who fight to help Egypt.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

⁹At that time, I will send messengers in ships to Ethiopia. I will stop the Ethiopian people being proud of their power. Instead, the news about Egypt's trouble will make them very afraid. That day is coming soon! Be careful!

¹⁰This is what the Almighty Lord says:

I will use King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to destroy Egypt's army.
¹¹The king and his army will come to destroy the land.
They are a nation of cruel people.
They will attack Egypt's people with their swords.
They will fill the land with dead bodies.
¹²I will cause the Nile river to become dry.
I will put the land under the power of evil men.
Foreigners will destroy the land of Egypt
and everything that is in it.

That is what I, the Lord, say.

¹³The Almighty Lord says this:

I will destroy Egypt's idols and the false gods in Memphis.
Egypt will no longer have its own ruler.
I will cause Egypt's people to be very afraid.
¹⁴I will make Pathros a desert.
I will burn Zoan with fire.
I will punish the city of Thebes.
¹⁵I will punish Egypt's strong city of Pelusium.
I will show the people there that I am very angry.
I will destroy all the soldiers in Thebes.
¹⁶Yes, I will destroy all of Egypt with fire!
The people of Pelusium will suffer with great pain.
Enemies will knock down the walls of Thebes.
The people of Memphis will live in fear every day.
¹⁷The young men of Heliopolis and Bubastis will die in the war.
Enemies will take the other people from those cities as their prisoners.
¹⁸It will be a very dark day in Tahpanhes
when I destroy Egypt's strength.
Egypt will not be proud of her great power any more.
A dark cloud will cover the land.
Enemies will take away the people from Egypt's villages as prisoners.
¹⁹That is how I will punish Egypt.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.” ’

²⁰The Lord gave this message to me on the 7th day of the first month, in the 11th year:

²¹‘Son of man, I have removed the strength of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. It is as if I have broken his arm and nobody has helped it to mend. He will never again have the power to fight battles. ²²So this is what the Almighty Lord says: Listen! I have become the enemy of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. I will make him like a man with two broken arms. I will break his strong arm and his broken arm. He will not be able to fight at all! ²³I will cause the Egyptian people to run away to live in foreign countries. ²⁴I will make the king of Babylon powerful, to fight battles on my behalf. But I will cause Pharaoh to be weak. He will cry in pain when the king of Babylon attacks. He will receive wounds that cause him to die. ²⁵Yes, I will make the king of Babylon strong. But Pharaoh, king of Egypt, will become weak. I will give the king of Babylon power to fight on my behalf. He will use that power to attack Egypt. Then they will know that I am the Lord. ²⁶I will send the Egyptian people away to many different countries. They will live among other nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord. ’
