Vision of God’s Glory Departing from the Temple

10 Then I looked, and behold, in the ^[a](A)expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a ^(B)sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a ^(C)throne, appeared above them. ² And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the ^(D)whirling wheels under the ^[b]cherubim and fill your hands with ^(E)coals of fire from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.

³ Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the ^[c]temple when the man entered, and the cloud filled the ^(F)inner court. ⁴ Then the ^(G)glory of the Lord went up from the cherub to the threshold of the temple, and the ^(H)temple was filled with the cloud and the court was filled with the ^(I)brightness of the glory of the Lord. ⁵ Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the ^(J)voice of ^[d]God Almighty when He speaks.

⁶ It came about when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he entered and stood beside a wheel. ⁷ Then the cherub stretched out his hand from between the cherubim to the fire which was between the cherubim, took some and put it into the hands of the one clothed in linen, who took it and went out. ⁸ The cherubim appeared to have the form of a man’s hand under their wings.

⁹ Then I looked, and behold, ^(K)four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a ^[e](L)Tarshish stone. ¹⁰ As for their appearance, all four of them had the same likeness, as if one wheel were within another wheel. ¹¹ When they moved, they went ^(M)in any of their four ^[f]directions without turning as they went; but they followed in the direction which ^[g]they faced, without turning as they went. ¹² Their ^(N)whole body, their backs, their hands, their wings and the ^(O)wheels were full of eyes all around, the wheels belonging to all four of them. ¹³ The wheels were called in my hearing, the whirling wheels. ¹⁴ And ^(P)each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

¹⁵ Then the cherubim rose up. They are the ^(Q)living beings that I saw by the river Chebar. ¹⁶ Now when the cherubim moved, the wheels would go beside them; also when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels would not turn from beside them. ¹⁷ When ^[h]the cherubim ^(R)stood still, ^[i]the wheels would stand still; and when they rose up, ^[j]the wheels would rise with them, for the spirit of the living beings was in them.

¹⁸ Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood ^(S)over the cherubim. ¹⁹ When ^(T)the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel ^[k]hovered over them.

²⁰ These are the ^(U)living beings that I saw beneath the God of Israel by ^(V)the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim. ^21 (W)Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the form of human hands. ²² As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.

Evil Rulers to Be Judged

11 Moreover, the ^(X)Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lord’s house which faced eastward. And behold, there were twenty-five men at the entrance of the gate, and among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and ^(Y)Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people. ² He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity and ^(Z)give evil advice in this city, ³ who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. ^[l]This ^(AA)city is the pot and we are the flesh.’ ⁴ Therefore, ^(AB)prophesy against them, son of man, prophesy!”

⁵ Then the Spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and He said to me, “Say, ‘Thus says the Lord, “So you think, house of Israel, for ^(AC)I know ^[m]your ^(AD)thoughts. ⁶ You have ^(AE)multiplied your slain in this city, filling its streets with ^[n]them.” ⁷ Therefore, thus says the Lord ^[o]God, “Your ^(AF)slain whom you have laid in the midst of ^[p]the city are the flesh and this city is the pot; but ^[q]I will ^(AG)bring you out of it. ⁸ You have ^(AH)feared a sword; so I will ^(AI)bring a sword upon you,” the Lord God declares. ⁹ “And I will bring you out of the midst of ^[r]the city and deliver you into the hands of ^(AJ)strangers and ^(AK)execute judgments against you. ¹⁰ You will ^(AL)fall by the sword. I will judge you to the ^(AM)border of Israel; so you shall know that I am the Lord. ¹¹ This city will ^(AN)not be a pot for you, nor will you be flesh in the midst of it, but I will judge you to the border of Israel. ¹² Thus you will know that I am the Lord; for you have not walked in My statutes nor have you ^(AO)executed My ordinances, but have acted according to the ordinances of the ^(AP)nations around you.”’”

¹³ Now it came about as I prophesied, that ^(AQ)Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell on my face and cried out with a loud voice and said, “^(AR)Alas, Lord God! Will You bring the remnant of Israel to a complete end?”

Promise of Restoration

¹⁴ Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ¹⁵ “Son of man, your brothers, your ^[s]relatives, ^[t]your fellow exiles and the whole house of Israel, all of them, are those to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Go far from the Lord; this land has been given ^(AS)us as a possession.’ ¹⁶ Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Though I had removed them far away among the nations and though I had scattered them among the countries, yet I was a ^(AT)sanctuary for them a little while in the countries where they had gone.”’ ¹⁷ Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “I will ^(AU)gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries among which you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”’ ¹⁸ When they come there, they will ^(AV)remove all its ^(AW)detestable things and all its abominations from it. ¹⁹ And I will ^(AX)give them one heart, and put a new spirit within ^[u]them. And I will take the ^(AY)heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a ^(AZ)heart of flesh, ²⁰ that they may ^(BA)walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be ^(BB)My people, and I shall be their God. ^21 [v]But as for those whose hearts go after their ^(BC)detestable things and abominations, I will ^(BD)bring their conduct down on their heads,” declares the Lord God.

²² Then the cherubim ^(BE)lifted up their wings with the wheels beside them, and ^(BF)the glory of the God of Israel ^[w]hovered over them. ²³ The ^(BG)glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city and ^(BH)stood over the mountain which is east of the city. ²⁴ And the ^(BI)Spirit lifted me up and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God to the exiles ^[x]in Chaldea. So the vision that I had seen ^[y](BJ)left me. ²⁵ Then I ^(BK)told the exiles all the things that the Lord had shown me.

Ezekiel Prepares for Exile

12 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ² “Son of man, you live in the ^(BL)midst of the ^(BM)rebellious house, who ^(BN)have eyes to see but do not see, ears to hear but do not hear; for they are a rebellious house. ³ Therefore, son of man, prepare for yourself baggage for exile and go into exile by day in their sight; even go into exile from your place to another place in their sight. ^(BO)Perhaps they will ^[z]understand though they are a rebellious house. ⁴ Bring your baggage out by day in their sight, as baggage for exile. Then you will go out ^(BP)at evening in their sight, as those going into exile. ⁵ Dig a hole through the wall in their sight and ^[aa]go out through it. ⁶ Load the baggage on your shoulder in their sight and carry it out in the dark. You shall ^(BQ)cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have set you as a ^(BR)sign to the house of Israel.”

⁷ I ^(BS)did so, as I had been commanded. By day I ^(BT)brought out my baggage like the baggage of an exile. Then in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands; I went out in the dark and carried the baggage on my shoulder in their sight.

⁸ In the morning the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ⁹ “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the ^(BU)rebellious house, said to you, ‘^(BV)What are you doing?’ ¹⁰ Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord ^[ab]God, “This ^[ac](BW)burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem as well as all the house of Israel who are ^[ad]in it.”’ ¹¹ Say, ‘I am ^[ae]a ^(BX)sign to you. As I have done, so it will be done to them; they will ^(BY)go into exile, into captivity.’ ¹² The ^(BZ)prince who is among them will load his baggage on his shoulder in the dark and go out. ^[af]They will dig a hole through the wall to bring it out. He will cover his face so that he can not see the land with his eyes. ¹³ I will also spread My ^(CA)net over him, and he will be caught in My snare. And I will bring him to Babylon in the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will ^(CB)not see it, though he will die there. ¹⁴ I will ^(CC)scatter to every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops; and I will draw out a sword after them. ¹⁵ So they will ^(CD)know that I am the Lord when I scatter them among the nations and spread them among the countries. ¹⁶ But I will ^[ag]spare a few of them from the ^(CE)sword, the famine and the pestilence that they may tell all their abominations among the nations where they go, and ^[ah]may ^(CF)know that I am the Lord.”

¹⁷ Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me saying, ¹⁸ “Son of man, ^(CG)eat your bread with trembling and drink your water with quivering and anxiety. ¹⁹ Then say to the people of the land, ‘Thus says the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel, “They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with horror, because ^[ai]their land will be ^[aj](CH)stripped of its fullness on account of the violence of all who live in it. ²⁰ The inhabited ^(CI)cities will be laid waste and the ^(CJ)land will be a desolation. So you will know that I am the Lord.”’”

²¹ Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ²² “Son of man, what is this ^(CK)proverb you people have concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The ^(CL)days are long and every ^(CM)vision fails’? ²³ Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “I will make this proverb cease so that they will no longer use it as a proverb in Israel.” But tell them, “^(CN)The days draw near as well as the ^[ak]fulfillment of every vision. ²⁴ For there will no longer be any ^[al](CO)false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel. ²⁵ For I the Lord will speak, and whatever ^(CP)word I speak will be performed. It will no longer be delayed, for in ^(CQ)your days, O ^(CR)rebellious house, I will speak the word and perform it,” declares the Lord God.’”

²⁶ Furthermore, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ²⁷ “Son of man, behold, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for ^(CS)many ^[am]years from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’ ²⁸ Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “None of My words will be delayed any longer. Whatever word I speak will be performed,”’” declares the Lord God.

Jesus Goes to Galilee

4 Therefore when ^(A)the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and ^(B)baptizing more disciples than John ² (although ^(C)Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His ^(D)disciples were), ³ He left ^(E)Judea and went away ^(F)again into Galilee. ⁴ And He had to pass through ^(G)Samaria. ⁵ So He *came to a city of ^(H)Samaria called Sychar, near ^(I)the parcel of ground that ^(J)Jacob gave to his son Joseph; ⁶ and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about ^[a]the sixth hour.

The Woman of Samaria

⁷ There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus *said to her, “Give Me a drink.” ⁸ For His ^(K)disciples had gone away into ^(L)the city to buy food. ⁹ Therefore the ^(M)Samaritan woman *said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For ^(N)Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) ¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you ^(O)living water.” ¹¹ She *said to Him, “^[b]Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that ^(P)living water? ¹² You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who ^(Q)gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” ¹³ Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; ¹⁴ but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him ^(R)shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to ^(S)eternal life.”

¹⁵ The woman *said to Him, “^[c]Sir, ^(T)give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” ¹⁶ He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” ¹⁷ The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; ¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” ¹⁹ The woman *said to Him, “^[d]Sir, I perceive that You are ^(U)a prophet. ^20 (V)Our fathers worshiped in ^(W)this mountain, and you people say that ^(X)in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” ²¹ Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, ^(Y)an hour is coming when ^(Z)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. ^22 (AA)You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for ^(AB)salvation is from the Jews. ²³ But ^(AC)an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father ^(AD)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. ²⁴ God is ^[e]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship ^(AE)in spirit and truth.” ²⁵ The woman *said to Him, “I know that ^(AF)Messiah is coming (^(AG)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” ²⁶ Jesus *said to her, “^(AH)I who speak to you am He.”

²⁷ At this point His ^(AI)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” ²⁸ So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men, ²⁹ “Come, see a man ^(AJ)who told me all the things that I have done; ^(AK)this is not ^[f]the Christ, is it?” ³⁰ They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

³¹ Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “^(AL)Rabbi, eat.” ³² But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” ³³ So the ^(AM)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” ³⁴ Jesus *said to them, “My food is to ^(AN)do the will of Him who sent Me and to ^(AO)accomplish His work. ³⁵ Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white ^(AP)for harvest. ³⁶ Already he who reaps is receiving ^(AQ)wages and is gathering ^(AR)fruit for ^(AS)life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. ³⁷ For in this case the saying is true, ‘^(AT)One sows and another reaps.’ ³⁸ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”

The Samaritans

³⁹ From ^(AU)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “^(AV)He told me all the things that I have done.” ⁴⁰ So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. ⁴¹ Many more believed because of His word; ⁴² and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed ^(AW)the Savior of the world.”

⁴³ After ^(AX)the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. ⁴⁴ For Jesus Himself testified that ^(AY)a prophet has no honor in his own country. ⁴⁵ So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, ^(AZ)having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Healing a Nobleman’s Son

⁴⁶ Therefore He came again to ^(BA)Cana of Galilee ^(BB)where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at ^(BC)Capernaum. ⁴⁷ When he heard that Jesus had come ^(BD)out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see ^[g](BE)signs and ^(BF)wonders, you simply will not believe.” ⁴⁹ The royal official *said to Him, “^[h]Sir, come down before my child dies.” ⁵⁰ Jesus *said to him, “^(BG)Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. ⁵¹ As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his ^[i]son was living. ⁵² So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the ^[j]seventh hour the fever left him.” ⁵³ So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and ^(BH)his whole household. ⁵⁴ This is again a ^(BI)second ^[k]sign that Jesus performed when He had ^(BJ)come out of Judea into Galilee.
