Return of the divine glory

43 Then he led me to the east gate, where the glory of Israel’s God was coming in from the east. Its sound was like the sound of a mighty flood, and the earth was lit up with his glory. What appeared when I looked was like what I had seen when he[a] came to destroy the city, and also like what I saw at the Chebar River, and I fell on my face. Then the Lord’s glory came into the temple by way of the east gate. A wind picked me up and brought me to the inner courtyard, and there the Lord’s glory filled the temple. A man was standing next to me, but the voice that I heard came from inside the temple. He said to me, Human one, this is the place for my throne and the place for the soles of my feet, where I will dwell among the Israelites forever. The house of Israel will never again defile my holy name, neither they nor their kings, with their disloyalties[b] and with their kings’ corpses at the shrines. When they set their plazas[c] with mine and their doorposts next to mine, the wall was between us. They defiled my holy name with their detestable practices, so I consumed them in my anger. Now let them remove their disloyalties and their kings’ corpses from me, and I will dwell among them forever.

10 You, human one, describe the temple to the house of Israel. Let them be humiliated because of their guilt when they think about its design. 11 When they feel humiliated by all that they have done, make known to them the shape of the temple and its adornment, its exits and its entrances, its entire plan and all of its regulations.[d] Write them down in their sight so that they may observe all of its entire plan and all its regulations and perform them.

12 These are the instructions for the temple: the top of the mountain, as well as its boundaries all around, are most holy. These are the instructions for the temple.

The altar

13 These are the dimensions of the altar, according to a twenty-one-inch unit of measure.[e] The base is twenty-one inches high and twenty-one inches wide, with an outer curb measuring one and a half inches all around. This is the altar’s height. 14 From the base at ground level to the lower ledge is forty-two inches; the lower ledge is twenty-one inches wide. The distance from the lower to the upper ledge is seven feet; the upper ledge is twenty-one inches wide. 15 The hearth is seven feet high, with four horns projecting upward from the hearth. 16 The hearth is twenty-one feet square; each side is equal to the others. 17 The ledge around the hearth is twenty-four and a half feet long by twenty-four and a half feet wide, a square. Its outer rim is ten and a half inches, and its base all around is twenty-one inches. Its ramp faces east.

Purification of the altar

18 He said to me, Human one, the Lord God proclaims: These are the regulations established for the altar on the day when it is prepared for making entirely burned offerings and dashing blood on it. 19 You will provide a young bull as a purification offering to the levitical priests who are descendants of Zadok, the ones who may draw near to minster to me. This is what the Lord God says. 20 You will take some of its blood and set it on the four horns of the altar and on the four sides of the ledge and on the curb all around. So you will purify it and purge it. 21 Then you will take the bull selected as the purification offering, and the priests will burn it in a designated place of the temple outside of the sanctuary. 22 On the second day, you will present a flawless male goat as a purification offering. The priests will purify the altar just as they purified the altar with the bull. 23 When you have completed the purification, you will present a flawless bull from the herd and a flawless ram from the flock. 24 You will present them to the Lord. The priests will throw salt on them and offer them as entirely burned offerings to the Lord. 25 Daily, for seven days, you will present a male goat for a purification offering. You will also present a bull from the herd and a ram from the flock, both flawless. 26 For seven days the priests will purge the altar in order to purify it and to dedicate it. 27 When the seven days are completed, the priests will offer your entirely burned offerings and your well-being sacrifices on the altar from the eighth day on, and I will accept you with pleasure. This is what the Lord God says.

The closed gate

44 He brought me back to the outer sanctuary gate that faces east. It was closed. The Lord said to me, This gate remains closed. It shouldn’t be opened. No one should come in through it because the Lord, Israel’s God, has entered through it. It will remain closed. As for the prince, he may sit in it to eat bread in the Lord’s presence. He may come in and go out by way of the gate’s porch.

Foreigners, Levites, Zadokites

Then he brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple. I looked, and suddenly the Lord’s glory filled the Lord’s temple, and I fell on my face. Then the Lord said to me: Human one, pay close attention! Use your eyes and ears and listen to all that I say to you concerning the regulations of the Lord’s temple and all its instructions. Pay close attention to the access to the temple through all the sanctuary portals.[f] Speak to the rebels, to the house of Israel, The Lord God proclaims: Enough of your detestable practices, house of Israel! You made my temple unclean because you brought into my sanctuary foreigners who were physically and spiritually uncircumcised. When you offered my food of fat and blood to me, you[g] broke my covenant with all your detestable practices. You didn’t keep charge of my holy things. On the contrary, you appointed them[h] to keep charge in my sanctuary for you.

The Lord God proclaims: Foreigners who are spiritually and physically uncircumcised must not enter my sanctuary; that is, all foreigners among the Israelites. 10 But the Levites, who went far from me when Israel went astray, who went astray from me after their idols, will bear their guilt. 11 They will keep charge in my sanctuary, and they will oversee the temple gates and keep charge of the temple. They will slaughter the entirely burned offerings and the sacrifices for the people, and they will stand before them to minister to them. 12 Because they ministered to them before their idols, they brought about the downfall of the house of Israel. For that reason I made a solemn pledge against them—this is what the Lord God says—and they will bear their guilt. 13 They won’t approach me to officiate for me as priests or approach any of my holy things or the most holy place. Though they will bear their humiliation and the consequences of their detestable practices, 14 I will appoint them to keep charge of the temple, all its work, and all that is done in it.

15 As for the priests of the levitical family of Zadok who did keep charge of my sanctuary when the Israelites strayed away from me, they will draw near to me to serve me. They will stand in my presence to present fat and blood to me. This is what the Lord God says. 16 They will come into my sanctuary, and they will approach my table to minister to me. They will keep my charge. 17 When they come through the gates to the inner courtyard, they will wear linen garments. They won’t wear any wool when they minister at the gates of the inner courtyard or in the temple. 18 They will have linen turbans on their heads and linen undergarments around their waists. They won’t wear anything that makes them sweat. 19 When they go out to the outer courtyard to the people, they will remove the garments in which they were ministering. They will lay them aside in the holy chambers and wear other clothing. They must not transfer holiness to the people through their clothing. 20 They must neither shave their heads nor let their hair grow long, but they will trim the hair on their heads. 21 None of the priests should drink wine when they come into the inner courtyard. 22 They must not marry widows or divorced women, but only Israelite virgins. Priests may, however, marry the widows of other priests. 23 They must teach my people the difference between the holy and the ordinary, and show them the difference between clean and unclean. 24 They must execute judgments according to my case laws in cases of civil conflict. They must observe my instructions and my regulations regarding all my festivals. They must keep my sabbaths holy. 25 In order to avoid uncleanness, they must not approach the dead. They may, however, become unclean for their father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister. 26 Once the priest is clean again, he must count off seven days. 27 On the day that he comes into the holy place, the inner courtyard, to minister in the holy place, he will present his purification offering. This is what the Lord God says. 28 As for their inheritance, I am their inheritance. They won’t be given family property in Israel; I am their family property. 29 They will eat the grain offerings, the purification offerings, and the compensation offerings. Every dedicated thing in Israel belongs to them. 30 The best of the early produce of every kind, and every contribution, all of them, belong to the priests. You will give the best of your bread dough to the priest so that a blessing may come to rest on your household. 31 The priests must not eat any bird or animal that dies naturally or is torn apart by prey.

The holy portion

45 When you distribute the land as an inheritance, you will set aside a holy portion of land for the Lord. It will be 7.1 miles long and 5.68 miles[i] wide. It will be holy throughout the entire area. Out of this portion, an area seven hundred fifty feet by seven hundred fifty feet square will be for the sanctuary. All around it will be an open space seventy-five feet wide. Beginning with this measurement, you will measure out an area 7.1 miles long and 2.84 miles wide. The sanctuary, the most holy place, will lie on it. It is holy, set apart from the land, and it belongs to the priests who draw near to minister in the Lord’s sanctuary. It will be a place for their houses, and a holy place for the sanctuary. The area 7.1 miles long and 2.84 miles wide will be for the Levites who minister in the temple. Twenty chambers are theirs as their property. As the property for the city, you will set aside an area 1.42 miles wide and 7.1 miles long next to the holy portion. It will be for the whole house of Israel. The territory for the prince will be on both sides of the holy portion and the city property, alongside the holy portion and alongside the city property, from their western boundaries westward and from their eastern boundaries eastward. Its length will equal one tribal portion, from the western border to the eastern border. The land will be his property in Israel, and my princes will no longer oppress my people. They will give the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes.

The Lord God proclaims: Enough, princes of Israel! Turn aside from violence and oppression. Establish justice and righteousness. Cease your evictions of my people! This is what the Lord God says: 10 You must use fair scales, a fair ephah,[j] and a fair bath.[k] 11 The ephah and the bath must be the same size. Both should be calibrated to the homer: each will contain one-tenth of a homer. 12 The shekel must weigh twenty gerahs. Twenty shekels, twenty-five shekels, and fifteen shekels will equal one maneh for you.

Sacrificial offerings and gifts

13 These are your prescribed contributions: one-sixth of an ephah for each homer of wheat, and one-sixth of an ephah for each homer of barley; 14 a regular amount of oil,[l] one-tenth of a bath for each kor[m] (each kor[n] contains ten baths); 15 and one sheep from the flock for every two hundred from Israel’s pastureland, for grain offerings, for entirely burned offerings, and for well-being sacrifices to make reconciliation for them. This is what the Lord God says. 16 All the people will make this contribution on behalf of the prince in Israel. 17 The prince will be responsible for the entirely burned offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings for the festivals, new moons, and sabbaths, all the appointed festivals of the house of Israel. He will offer the purification offering, the grain offering, the entirely burned offering, and the well-being sacrifice to make reconciliation on behalf of the house of Israel.

Festivals

18 The Lord God proclaims: On the first day of the first month,[o] you will take a flawless young bull from the herd, and you will purify the sanctuary. 19 The priest will take some of the blood from the purification offering, and he will set it on the doorposts of the temple and on the four corners of the ledge of the altar and on the doorposts of the gate to the inner courtyard. 20 You will do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who sins through inadvertence or ignorance. So you will purge the temple. 21 Your Passover will be on the fourteenth day of the first month. Unleavened bread will be eaten during the seven days of the festival. 22 On that day, the prince will provide a young bull as the purification offering for himself and for the people of the land. 23 For the seven days of the festival, he will provide seven flawless bulls and seven flawless rams, one for each day of the festival, as the entirely burned offering for the Lord, and, for the purification offering, one male goat for each day. 24 He will also provide the grain offerings, one ephah[p] for each bull, and one ephah for each ram, with one hin[q] of oil for each ephah. 25 For the festival that begins on the fifteenth day of the seventh month,[r] he will make the same provisions for the purification offerings, entirely burned offerings, grain offerings, and oil, for all seven days of the festival.

Sabbaths and gift offerings

46 The Lord God proclaims: The east-facing gate of the inner courtyard will remain closed for the six days of the workweek. But on the Sabbath and on the day of the new moon it will be opened, and the prince will come in from outside by way of the porch of the gate and stand at the gate’s doorposts. The priests will present the prince’s entirely burned offerings and well-being sacrifices, and then he will bow down on the threshold of the gate and go out. The gate won’t be closed until evening so that the people of the land may bow in the presence of the Lord on sabbaths and new moons at the opening of that gate. On the Sabbath day, the prince will offer to the Lord an entirely burned offering of six flawless lambs and a flawless ram, a grain offering of one ephah for the ram, and a grain offering at his discretion for the lambs, with one hin of oil for each ephah. For the day of the new moon, the offering will be a flawless young bull from the herd, six lambs, and a flawless ram, and he will provide a grain offering of one ephah each for the bull and the ram, and for the lambs as much as he likes, with one hin of oil for each ephah.

When the prince enters, he comes in by way of the porch of the gate and goes out in the same direction. When the people of the land come into the Lord’s presence for the festivals, those who enter through the north gate to worship should go out through the south, and those who come in through the south gate should go out through the north gate. They shouldn’t turn around and go out the same way they came in. Instead, they should go out the opposite gate. 10 The prince should accompany them: when they come in, he comes in, and when they go out, he goes out. 11 At the festivals and appointed gatherings, the grain offering is one ephah for each bull, one ephah for each ram, and whatever one is able to give for each lamb, with one hin of oil for each ephah.

12 Whenever the prince makes a spontaneous gift to the Lord, whether it is an entirely burned offering or a well-being sacrifice, the gate facing east will be opened for him, and he will present his entirely burned offering and well-being sacrifices, just as he does on the Sabbath day. When he leaves, the gate will be closed after he has gone out.

Daily offerings

13 As a daily entirely burned offering for the Lord, you will provide a flawless year-old lamb. You will make the offering every morning. 14 You will provide a grain offering along with it every morning, one-sixth of an ephah along with one-third of a hin of oil to moisten the choice flour. This is a permanent and perpetual regulation for the grain offering to the Lord. 15 So the lamb, the grain offering, and the oil are provided every morning as a perpetual entirely burned offering.

Royal land grants

16 The Lord God proclaims: When the prince gives a gift to each of his sons, it becomes their inheritance. It becomes their family property as an inheritance. 17 And if he gives one of his servants a gift from his inheritance, it will belong to the servant only until the year of release, and then it will revert to the prince. It is his children’s inheritance; it belongs to them. 18 The prince won’t take the people’s inheritance by evicting them from their family property. He will bequeath only his own property to his sons, lest any of my people be deprived of their rightful property.

Kitchens

19 Then he brought me through the passage beside the gate next to the priests’ quarters, the holy chambers facing north. There was a place hidden away on the western side. 20 He said to me, “Rather than taking these offerings out into the outer courtyard and transferring holiness to the people, this is the place where the priests will boil the compensation offerings and the purification offerings, and where they will bake the grain offerings.”

21 Then he took me to the outer courtyard, and he had me pass through its four corners, and I saw that there were additional courtyards in each of the corners. 22 In all four corners of the courtyard, these courtyards were constructed to handle smoke. All four were the same size, sixty feet long by forty-five feet wide. 23 All four had stone masonry all the way around, and hearths were built under this masonry all the way around. 24 He said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who minister in the temple cook the people’s sacrifices.”

The river

47 When he brought me back to the temple’s entrance, I noticed that water was flowing toward the east from under the temple’s threshold (the temple faced east). The water was going out from under the temple’s facade toward the south, south of the altar. He led me out through the north gate and around the outside to the outer east gate, where the water flowed out under the facade on the south side. With the line in his hand, the man went out toward the east. When he measured off fifteen hundred feet, he made me cross the water; it was ankle-deep. He measured off another fifteen hundred feet and made me cross the water; it was knee-deep. He measured off another fifteen hundred feet and made me cross the water, and it was waist-high. When he measured off another fifteen hundred feet, it had become a river that I couldn’t cross. The water was high, deep enough for swimming but too high to cross. He said to me, “Human one, do you see?” Then he led me back to the edge of the river. When I went back, I saw very many trees on both banks of the river. He said to me, “These waters go out to the eastern region, flow down the steep slopes,[s] and go into the Dead Sea.[t] When the flowing waters enter the sea, its water becomes fresh. Wherever the river flows, every living thing that moves will thrive. There will be great schools of fish, because when these waters enter the sea, it will be fresh. Wherever the river flows, everything will live. 10 People will stand fishing beside it, from En-gedi to En-eglayim, and it will become a place for spreading nets. It will be like the Mediterranean Sea,[u] having all kinds of fish in it. 11 Its marshes and swamps won’t be made fresh (they are left for salt), 12 but on both banks of the river will grow up all kinds of fruit-bearing trees. Their leaves won’t wither, and their fruitfulness won’t wane. They will produce fruit in every month, because their water comes from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for eating, their leaves for healing.”

13 The Lord God proclaims: These[v] are the boundaries of the portions of land that will be distributed as an inheritance to the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph will receive two portions. 14 What I swore to give to your ancestors, you will distribute as an inheritance equally. This land is given to you as an inheritance. 15 This is the boundary of the land. The northern limit begins at the Mediterranean Sea and goes in the direction of Hethlon toward Lebo-hamath, Zedad,[w] 16 Berothah, Sibraim (which is between the boundary of Damascus and the boundary of Hamath), and Hazer-hatticon (that is on the boundary of Hauran). 17 So the boundary from the Mediterranean Sea[x] to Hazar-enon will run north of the boundary of Damascus, with the boundary of Hamath to the north. This is the northern limit. 18 For the eastern limit, you will measure continuously between Hauran and Damascus and between Gilead and the land of Israel, along the Jordan River as far as the Dead Sea.[y] This is the eastern limit. 19 The southern limit runs from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh and from there along the border[z] of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. This is the southern limit. 20 For the western limit, the Mediterranean Sea is the boundary up to Lebo-hamath. This is the western limit. 21 You will apportion this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 When you distribute the land as an inheritance, the immigrants who reside with you and raise families among you are considered full citizens along with the Israelites. They will receive an inheritance along with you among the tribes of Israel. 23 You will assign the immigrants’ inheritance with the tribe with whom they reside. This is what the Lord God says.

48 These are the tribes’ names: Beginning at the north, along the Hethlon road from Lebo-hamath to Hazar-enon, the boundary of Damascus with Hamath to the north, from the eastern border to the western border: Dan, one portion. Along the boundary of Dan from the eastern border to the western border: Asher, one portion. Along the boundary of Asher from the eastern border to the western border: Naphtali, one portion. Along the boundary of Naphtali from the eastern border to the western border: Manasseh, one portion. Along the boundary of Manasseh from the eastern border to the western border: Ephraim, one portion. Along the boundary of Ephraim from the eastern border to the western border: Reuben, one portion. Along the boundary of Reuben from the eastern border to the western border: Judah, one portion.

Along the boundary of Judah from the eastern border to the western border will be the portion that you will set aside, 7.1 miles wide and the length of a tribal portion from the eastern border to the western border. The sanctuary is in its center. The portion that you will set aside for the Lord will be 7.1 miles long and 5.68 miles[aa] wide. 10 These measurements define the holy portion for the priests: along the north, a length of 7.1 miles; along the west, a width of 2.84 miles; along the east, a width of 2.84 miles; and along the south, a length of 7.1 miles. The Lord’s sanctuary is in its center. 11 This holy area is for the Zadokite priests who kept my charge and didn’t stray as the Levites did when the house of Israel strayed away from me. 12 It belongs to them as a most special portion of the land, a most holy place, up to the border of the Levites. 13 The Levites’ allotment is next to the boundary of the priests, a length of 7.1 miles and a width of 2.84 miles. The entire length is 7.1 miles and the width 2.84 miles. 14 None of it will be sold, exchanged, or transferred. It is the choicest land, because it is holy to the Lord. 15 The remaining area, 1.42 miles wide and 7.1 miles long, is for ordinary use for the city, for residences, and for pastures. The city will be in the middle of it. 16 It measures 1.28 miles on its northern border, 1.28 miles on its southern border, 1.28 miles on its eastern border, and 1.28 miles on its western border. 17 There will be pastures for the city, three hundred seventy-five feet on the north side, three hundred seventy-five feet on the south side, three hundred seventy-five feet on the east side, and three hundred seventy-five feet on the west side. 18 The remaining area alongside the holy portion is 2.84 miles on the east and 2.84 miles on the west. These areas that adjoin the holy portion will produce the food for the city’s workers. 19 The city’s workers from every tribe of Israel will farm it. 20 The entire portion that you will set aside is 7.1 miles by 7.1 miles, a square; it includes the holy portion in addition to the city property. 21 What is left on both sides of the holy portion and the city property belongs to the prince. The land from the edge of the portion of 7.1 miles, to the eastern boundary, and on the western edge of the 7.1 miles to the western boundary, belongs to the prince. It corresponds to one tribal portion. The holy portion and the temple sanctuary are in the middle of it, 22 but what belongs to the prince is separate from both the levitical property and the city property. The prince’s territory will be between the boundary of Judah and the boundary of Benjamin.

23 Now for the rest of the tribes: From the eastern border to the western border: Benjamin, one portion. 24 Along the boundary of Benjamin from the eastern border to the western border: Simeon, one portion. 25 Along the boundary of Simeon from the eastern border to the western border: Issachar, one portion. 26 Along the boundary of Issachar from the eastern border to the western border: Zebulun, one portion. 27 Along the boundary of Zebulun from the eastern border to the western border: Gad, one portion. 28 Along the boundary of Gad to the southern border, the boundary will run from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh and from there to the border of Egypt[ab] and to the Mediterranean Sea.[ac] 29 This is the land that you will distribute as an inheritance for the tribes of Israel. These are their portions. This is what the Lord God says.

30 These are the city exits. The north side is measured at 1.28 miles. 31 The gates of the city go by the names of the tribes of Israel. There are three gates on the north side: one gate for Reuben, one gate for Judah, and one gate for Levi. 32 There are three gates on the east side along its 1.28 miles: one gate for Joseph, one gate for Benjamin, and one gate for Dan. 33 There are three gates on the south side measuring 1.28 miles: one gate for Simeon, one gate for Issachar, and one gate for Zebulun. 34 There are three gates on the west side along its 1.28 miles: one gate for Gad, one gate for Asher, and one gate for Naphtali. 35 The circumference of the city is 5.1 miles. As of today, the name of the city is The Lord Is There.

God’s Glory Returns to the Temple

43 Then the man brought me to the gate facing east,(A) and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters,(B) and the land was radiant with his glory.(C) The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when he[a] came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown. The glory(D) of the Lord entered the temple through the gate facing east.(E) Then the Spirit(F) lifted me up(G) and brought me into the inner court, and the glory(H) of the Lord filled the temple.(I)

While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from inside the temple. He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne(J) and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites forever. The people of Israel will never again defile(K) my holy name—neither they nor their kings—by their prostitution and the funeral offerings[b] for their kings at their death.[c](L) When they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they defiled my holy name by their detestable practices. So I destroyed them in my anger. Now let them put away from me their prostitution and the funeral offerings for their kings, and I will live among them forever.(M)

10 “Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed(N) of their sins. Let them consider its perfection, 11 and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations[d] and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow all its regulations.(O)

12 “This is the law of the temple: All the surrounding area(P) on top of the mountain will be most holy.(Q) Such is the law of the temple.

The Great Altar Restored

13 “These are the measurements of the altar(R) in long cubits,[e] that cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth: Its gutter is a cubit deep and a cubit wide, with a rim of one span[f] around the edge. And this is the height of the altar: 14 From the gutter on the ground up to the lower ledge that goes around the altar it is two cubits high, and the ledge is a cubit wide.[g] From this lower ledge to the upper ledge that goes around the altar it is four cubits high, and that ledge is also a cubit wide.[h] 15 Above that, the altar hearth(S) is four cubits high, and four horns(T) project upward from the hearth. 16 The altar hearth is square, twelve cubits[i] long and twelve cubits wide.(U) 17 The upper ledge(V) also is square, fourteen cubits[j] long and fourteen cubits wide. All around the altar is a gutter of one cubit with a rim of half a cubit.[k] The steps(W) of the altar face east.(X)

18 Then he said to me, “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: These will be the regulations for sacrificing burnt offerings(Y) and splashing blood(Z) against the altar when it is built: 19 You are to give a young bull(AA) as a sin offering[l] to the Levitical priests of the family of Zadok,(AB) who come near(AC) to minister before me, declares the Sovereign Lord. 20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar(AD) and on the four corners of the upper ledge(AE) and all around the rim, and so purify the altar(AF) and make atonement for it. 21 You are to take the bull for the sin offering and burn it in the designated part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.(AG)

22 “On the second day you are to offer a male goat without defect for a sin offering, and the altar is to be purified as it was purified with the bull. 23 When you have finished purifying it, you are to offer a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(AH) 24 You are to offer them before the Lord, and the priests are to sprinkle salt(AI) on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the Lord.

25 “For seven days(AJ) you are to provide a male goat daily for a sin offering; you are also to provide a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(AK) 26 For seven days they are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it; thus they will dedicate it. 27 At the end of these days, from the eighth day(AL) on, the priests are to present your burnt offerings(AM) and fellowship offerings(AN) on the altar. Then I will accept you, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

The Priesthood Restored

44 Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east,(AO) and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it.(AP) It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence(AQ) of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.(AR)

Then the man brought me by way of the north gate(AS) to the front of the temple. I looked and saw the glory of the Lord filling the temple(AT) of the Lord, and I fell facedown.(AU)

The Lord said to me, “Son of man, look carefully, listen closely and give attention to everything I tell you concerning all the regulations and instructions regarding the temple of the Lord. Give attention to the entrance(AV) to the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary.(AW) Say to rebellious Israel,(AX) ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Enough of your detestable practices, people of Israel! In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart(AY) and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant.(AZ) Instead of carrying out your duty in regard to my holy things, you put others in charge of my sanctuary.(BA) This is what the Sovereign Lord says: No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh is to enter my sanctuary, not even the foreigners who live among the Israelites.(BB)

10 “‘The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray(BC) and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin.(BD) 11 They may serve in my sanctuary, having charge of the gates of the temple and serving in it; they may slaughter the burnt offerings(BE) and sacrifices for the people and stand before the people and serve them.(BF) 12 But because they served them in the presence of their idols and made the people of Israel fall(BG) into sin, therefore I have sworn with uplifted hand(BH) that they must bear the consequences of their sin, declares the Sovereign Lord.(BI) 13 They are not to come near to serve me as priests or come near any of my holy things or my most holy offerings; they must bear the shame(BJ) of their detestable practices.(BK) 14 And I will appoint them to guard the temple for all the work that is to be done in it.(BL)

15 “‘But the Levitical priests, who are descendants of Zadok(BM) and who guarded my sanctuary when the Israelites went astray from me, are to come near to minister before me; they are to stand before me to offer sacrifices of fat(BN) and blood, declares the Sovereign Lord.(BO) 16 They alone are to enter my sanctuary; they alone are to come near my table(BP) to minister before me and serve me as guards.(BQ)

17 “‘When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen clothes;(BR) they must not wear any woolen garment while ministering at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple. 18 They are to wear linen turbans(BS) on their heads and linen undergarments(BT) around their waists. They must not wear anything that makes them perspire.(BU) 19 When they go out into the outer court where the people are, they are to take off the clothes they have been ministering in and are to leave them in the sacred rooms, and put on other clothes, so that the people are not consecrated(BV) through contact with their garments.(BW)

20 “‘They must not shave(BX) their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed.(BY) 21 No priest is to drink wine when he enters the inner court.(BZ) 22 They must not marry widows or divorced women; they may marry only virgins of Israelite descent or widows of priests.(CA) 23 They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common(CB) and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.(CC)

24 “‘In any dispute, the priests are to serve as judges(CD) and decide it according to my ordinances. They are to keep my laws and my decrees for all my appointed festivals,(CE) and they are to keep my Sabbaths holy.(CF)

25 “‘A priest must not defile himself by going near a dead person; however, if the dead person was his father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister, then he may defile himself.(CG) 26 After he is cleansed, he must wait seven days.(CH) 27 On the day he goes into the inner court of the sanctuary(CI) to minister in the sanctuary, he is to offer a sin offering[m](CJ) for himself, declares the Sovereign Lord.

28 “‘I am to be the only inheritance(CK) the priests have. You are to give them no possession in Israel; I will be their possession. 29 They will eat(CL) the grain offerings, the sin offerings and the guilt offerings; and everything in Israel devoted[n] to the Lord(CM) will belong to them.(CN) 30 The best of all the firstfruits(CO) and of all your special gifts will belong to the priests. You are to give them the first portion of your ground meal(CP) so that a blessing(CQ) may rest on your household.(CR) 31 The priests must not eat anything, whether bird or animal, found dead(CS) or torn by wild animals.(CT)

Israel Fully Restored

45 “‘When you allot the land as an inheritance,(CU) you are to present to the Lord a portion of the land as a sacred district, 25,000 cubits[o] long and 20,000[p] cubits[q] wide; the entire area will be holy.(CV) Of this, a section 500 cubits[r] square(CW) is to be for the sanctuary, with 50 cubits[s] around it for open land. In the sacred district, measure off a section 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[t] wide. In it will be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. It will be the sacred portion of the land for the priests,(CX) who minister in the sanctuary and who draw near to minister before the Lord. It will be a place for their houses as well as a holy place for the sanctuary.(CY) An area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide will belong to the Levites, who serve in the temple, as their possession for towns to live in.[u](CZ)

“‘You are to give the city as its property an area 5,000 cubits[v] wide and 25,000 cubits long, adjoining the sacred portion; it will belong to all Israel.(DA)

“‘The prince will have the land bordering each side of the area formed by the sacred district and the property of the city. It will extend westward from the west side and eastward from the east side, running lengthwise from the western to the eastern border parallel to one of the tribal portions.(DB) This land will be his possession in Israel. And my princes will no longer oppress my people but will allow the people of Israel to possess the land according to their tribes.(DC)

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have gone far enough, princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression(DD) and do what is just and right.(DE) Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 10 You are to use accurate scales,(DF) an accurate ephah[w](DG) and an accurate bath.[x] 11 The ephah(DH) and the bath are to be the same size, the bath containing a tenth of a homer and the ephah a tenth of a homer; the homer is to be the standard measure for both. 12 The shekel[y] is to consist of twenty gerahs.(DI) Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one mina.[z]

13 “‘This is the special gift you are to offer: a sixth of an ephah[aa] from each homer of wheat and a sixth of an ephah[ab] from each homer of barley. 14 The prescribed portion of olive oil, measured by the bath, is a tenth of a bath[ac] from each cor (which consists of ten baths or one homer, for ten baths are equivalent to a homer). 15 Also one sheep is to be taken from every flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These will be used for the grain offerings, burnt offerings(DJ) and fellowship offerings to make atonement(DK) for the people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 All the people of the land will be required to give this special offering to the prince in Israel. 17 It will be the duty of the prince to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings and drink offerings at the festivals, the New Moons(DL) and the Sabbaths(DM)—at all the appointed festivals of Israel. He will provide the sin offerings,[ad] grain offerings, burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to make atonement for the Israelites.(DN)

18 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In the first month(DO) on the first day you are to take a young bull without defect(DP) and purify the sanctuary.(DQ) 19 The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the temple, on the four corners of the upper ledge(DR) of the altar(DS) and on the gateposts of the inner court. 20 You are to do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who sins unintentionally(DT) or through ignorance; so you are to make atonement for the temple.

21 “‘In the first month on the fourteenth day you are to observe the Passover,(DU) a festival lasting seven days, during which you shall eat bread made without yeast. 22 On that day the prince is to provide a bull as a sin offering for himself and for all the people of the land.(DV) 23 Every day during the seven days of the festival he is to provide seven bulls and seven rams(DW) without defect as a burnt offering to the Lord, and a male goat for a sin offering.(DX) 24 He is to provide as a grain offering(DY) an ephah for each bull and an ephah for each ram, along with a hin[ae] of olive oil for each ephah.(DZ)

25 “‘During the seven days of the festival,(EA) which begins in the seventh month on the fifteenth day, he is to make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings and oil.(EB)

46 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The gate of the inner court(EC) facing east(ED) is to be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day and on the day of the New Moon(EE) it is to be opened. The prince is to enter from the outside through the portico(EF) of the gateway and stand by the gatepost. The priests are to sacrifice his burnt offering(EG) and his fellowship offerings. He is to bow down in worship at the threshold of the gateway and then go out, but the gate will not be shut until evening.(EH) On the Sabbaths(EI) and New Moons the people of the land are to worship in the presence of the Lord at the entrance of that gateway.(EJ) The burnt offering the prince brings to the Lord on the Sabbath day is to be six male lambs and a ram, all without defect. The grain offering given with the ram is to be an ephah,[af] and the grain offering with the lambs is to be as much as he pleases, along with a hin[ag] of olive oil for each ephah.(EK) On the day of the New Moon(EL) he is to offer a young bull, six lambs and a ram, all without defect.(EM) He is to provide as a grain offering one ephah with the bull, one ephah with the ram, and with the lambs as much as he wants to give, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(EN) When the prince enters, he is to go in through the portico(EO) of the gateway, and he is to come out the same way.(EP)

“‘When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed festivals,(EQ) whoever enters by the north gate to worship is to go out the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate is to go out the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which they entered, but each is to go out the opposite gate. 10 The prince is to be among them, going in when they go in and going out when they go out.(ER) 11 At the feasts and the appointed festivals, the grain offering is to be an ephah with a bull, an ephah with a ram, and with the lambs as much as he pleases, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(ES)

12 “‘When the prince provides(ET) a freewill offering(EU) to the Lord—whether a burnt offering or fellowship offerings—the gate facing east is to be opened for him. He shall offer his burnt offering or his fellowship offerings as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out, the gate will be shut.(EV)

13 “‘Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning(EW) you shall provide it.(EX) 14 You are also to provide with it morning by morning a grain offering, consisting of a sixth of an ephah[ah] with a third of a hin[ai] of oil(EY) to moisten the flour. The presenting of this grain offering to the Lord is a lasting ordinance.(EZ) 15 So the lamb and the grain offering and the oil shall be provided morning by morning for a regular(FA) burnt offering.(FB)

16 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: If the prince makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his sons, it will also belong to his descendants; it is to be their property by inheritance.(FC) 17 If, however, he makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, the servant may keep it until the year of freedom;(FD) then it will revert to the prince. His inheritance belongs to his sons only; it is theirs. 18 The prince must not take(FE) any of the inheritance(FF) of the people, driving them off their property. He is to give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that not one of my people will be separated from their property.’”

19 Then the man brought me through the entrance(FG) at the side of the gate to the sacred rooms facing north,(FH) which belonged to the priests, and showed me a place at the western end. 20 He said to me, “This is the place where the priests are to cook the guilt offering and the sin offering[aj] and bake the grain offering, to avoid bringing them into the outer court and consecrating(FI) the people.”(FJ)

21 He then brought me to the outer court and led me around to its four corners, and I saw in each corner another court. 22 In the four corners of the outer court were enclosed[ak] courts, forty cubits long and thirty cubits wide;[al] each of the courts in the four corners was the same size. 23 Around the inside of each of the four courts was a ledge of stone, with places for fire built all around under the ledge. 24 He said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who minister at the temple are to cook the sacrifices of the people.”

The River From the Temple

47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water(FK) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.(FL) He then brought me out through the north gate(FM) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

As the man went eastward with a measuring line(FN) in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits[am] and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river(FO) that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.(FP) He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.(FQ) He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,[an](FR) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.(FS) Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.(FT) 10 Fishermen(FU) will stand along the shore; from En Gedi(FV) to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets.(FW) The fish will be of many kinds(FX)—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.(FY) 11 But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.(FZ) 12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.(GA) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit(GB) fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary(GC) flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.(GD)

The Boundaries of the Land

13 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries(GE) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.(GF) 14 You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.(GG)

15 “This is to be the boundary of the land:(GH)

“On the north side it will run from the Mediterranean Sea(GI) by the Hethlon road(GJ) past Lebo Hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah[ao](GK) and Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath),(GL) as far as Hazer Hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary will extend from the sea to Hazar Enan,[ap] along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary.(GM)

18 “On the east side the boundary will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, to the Dead Sea and as far as Tamar.[aq] This will be the eastern boundary.(GN)

19 “On the south side it will run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah Kadesh,(GO) then along the Wadi of Egypt(GP) to the Mediterranean Sea.(GQ) This will be the southern boundary.

20 “On the west side, the Mediterranean Sea will be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo Hamath.(GR) This will be the western boundary.(GS)

21 “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance(GT) for yourselves and for the foreigners(GU) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.(GV) 23 In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(GW)

The Division of the Land

48 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan(GX) will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road(GY) to Lebo Hamath;(GZ) Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.

“Asher(HA) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.

“Naphtali(HB) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.

“Manasseh(HC) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.

“Ephraim(HD) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh(HE) from east to west.(HF)

“Reuben(HG) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.

“Judah(HH) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.

“Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits[ar] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it.(HI)

“The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[as] wide.(HJ) 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord.(HK) 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites,(HL) who were faithful in serving me(HM) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray.(HN) 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.

13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits.(HO) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord.(HP)

15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits[at] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits,[au] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits.(HQ) 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits[av] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.(HR) 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.

21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them.(HS) 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin(HT) will have one portion; it will extend from the east side to the west side.

24 “Simeon(HU) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Benjamin from east to west.

25 “Issachar(HV) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Simeon from east to west.

26 “Zebulun(HW) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Issachar from east to west.

27 “Gad(HX) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Zebulun from east to west.

28 “The southern boundary of Gad will run south from Tamar(HY) to the waters of Meribah Kadesh, then along the Wadi of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.(HZ)

29 “This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these will be their portions,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(IA)

The Gates of the New City

30 “These will be the exits of the city: Beginning on the north side, which is 4,500 cubits long, 31 the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. The three gates on the north side will be the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah and the gate of Levi.

32 “On the east side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin and the gate of Dan.

33 “On the south side, which measures 4,500 cubits, will be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar and the gate of Zebulun.

34 “On the west side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher and the gate of Naphtali.(IB)

35 “The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits.[aw]

“And the name of the city from that time on will be:

the Lord is there.(IC)
