Jerusalem, a Useless Vine

15 And the word of the Lord came to me: (A)“Son of man, how does (B)the wood of the vine surpass any wood, the vine branch that is among the trees of the forest? Is wood taken from it to make anything? Do people take (C)a peg from it to hang any vessel on it? (D)Behold, it is given to the fire for fuel. When the fire has consumed both ends of it, and the middle of it is charred, is it useful for anything? (E)Behold, when it was whole, it was used for nothing. How much less, when the fire has consumed it and it is charred, can it ever be used for anything! Therefore thus says the Lord God: (F)Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, (G)which I have given to the fire for fuel, so have I given up the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (H)And I will set my face against them. Though (I)they escape from the fire, the fire shall yet consume them, (J)and you will know that I am the Lord, (K)when I set my face against them. (L)And I will make the land desolate, because (M)they have acted faithlessly, declares the Lord God.”

The Lord's Faithless Bride

16 Again the word of the Lord came to me: (N)“Son of man, (O)make known to Jerusalem her abominations, and say, Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites; your father was an (P)Amorite and your mother a (Q)Hittite. And as for your birth, (R)on the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths. No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you out of compassion for you, (S)but you were cast out on the open field, for you were abhorred, (T)on the day that you were born.

“And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing (U)in your blood, I said to you (V)in your blood, ‘Live!’ I said to you (W)in your blood, ‘Live!’ (X)I made you flourish like a plant of the field. And you grew up and became tall (Y)and arrived at full adornment. Your breasts were formed, and your hair had grown; yet (Z)you were naked and bare.

“When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and (AA)I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you (AB)and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, (AC)and you became mine. Then I bathed you with water and washed off your blood from you and (AD)anointed you with oil. 10 (AE)I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with fine leather. I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk.[a] 11 (AF)And I adorned you with ornaments and (AG)put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck. 12 And I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. (AH)You ate fine flour and honey and oil. (AI)You grew exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. 14 And (AJ)your renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord God.

15 (AK)“But you trusted in your beauty (AL)and played the whore[b] because of your renown (AM)and lavished your whorings[c] on any passerby; your beauty[d] became his. 16 You took some of your garments and made for yourself colorful shrines, and on them played the whore. The like has never been, nor ever shall be.[e] 17 You also took (AN)your beautiful jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you, and (AO)made for yourself images of men, and with them played the whore. 18 And you took your embroidered garments to cover them, (AP)and set my oil and my incense before them. 19 (AQ)Also my bread that I gave you—(AR)I fed you with fine flour and oil and honey—you set before them for (AS)a pleasing aroma; and so it was, declares the Lord God. 20 (AT)And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and (AU)these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your whorings so small a matter 21 that you slaughtered my children and delivered them up as an offering by fire to them? 22 And in all your abominations and your whorings you did not remember (AV)the days of your youth, (AW)when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood.

23 “And after all your wickedness (woe, woe to you! declares the Lord God), 24 you built yourself (AX)a vaulted chamber and made yourself a lofty place in every square. 25 At the head of every street (AY)you built your lofty place and made (AZ)your beauty an abomination, (BA)offering yourself[f] to any passerby and multiplying your whoring. 26 (BB)You also played the whore (BC)with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, (BD)multiplying your whoring, (BE)to provoke me to anger. 27 Behold, therefore, I stretched out my hand against you (BF)and diminished your allotted portion (BG)and delivered you to the greed of your enemies, (BH)the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior. 28 (BI)You played the whore also (BJ)with the Assyrians, because you were not satisfied; yes, you played the whore with them, and still you were not satisfied. 29 You multiplied your whoring also with the trading land (BK)of Chaldea, and even with this you were not satisfied.

30 “How sick is your heart,[g] declares the Lord God, because you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen prostitute, 31 building your vaulted chamber at the head of every street, and making your lofty place in every square. Yet you were not like a prostitute, (BL)because you scorned payment. 32 Adulterous wife, who receives strangers instead of her husband! 33 Men give gifts to all prostitutes, (BM)but you gave your gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from every side with your whorings. 34 So you were different from other women in your whorings. No one solicited you to play the whore, and (BN)you gave payment, while no payment was given to you; therefore you were different.

35 “Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of the Lord: 36 Thus says the Lord God, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, (BO)and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them, 37 therefore, behold, (BP)I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and (BQ)all those you hated. (BR)I will gather them against you from every side (BS)and will uncover your nakedness to them, that (BT)they may see all your nakedness. 38 (BU)And I will judge you (BV)as women who commit adultery and (BW)shed blood are judged, and bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy. 39 And I will give you into their hands, and they shall throw down your (BX)vaulted chamber and break down (BY)your lofty places. (BZ)They shall strip you of your clothes and take (CA)your beautiful jewels and leave you (CB)naked and bare. 40 (CC)They shall bring up a crowd against you, (CD)and they shall stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords. 41 (CE)And they shall (CF)burn your houses and (CG)execute judgments upon you in the sight of many women. (CH)I will make you stop playing the whore, and (CI)you shall also give payment no more. 42 (CJ)So will I satisfy my wrath on you, and my jealousy shall depart from you. I will be calm and will no more be angry. 43 Because you have not remembered (CK)the days of your youth, but have enraged me with all these things, therefore, behold, (CL)I have returned your deeds upon your head, declares the Lord God. Have you not (CM)committed lewdness in addition to all your abominations?

44 “Behold, everyone (CN)who uses proverbs will use this proverb about you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’ 45 You are the daughter of your mother, who loathed her husband and her children; and you are the sister of (CO)your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children. (CP)Your mother was a Hittite and (CQ)your father an Amorite. 46 And (CR)your elder sister is Samaria, who lived with her daughters to the north of you; and (CS)your younger sister, who lived to the south of you, is Sodom with her daughters. 47 (CT)Not only did you walk in their ways and do according to their abominations; within a very little time (CU)you were more corrupt than they in all your ways. 48 (CV)As I live, declares the Lord God, your sister (CW)Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done. 49 Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, (CX)excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and (CY)did an abomination before me. So (CZ)I removed them, when I saw it. 51 (DA)Samaria has not committed half your sins. You have committed more abominations than they, and (DB)have made your sisters appear righteous by all the abominations that you have committed. 52 (DC)Bear your disgrace, you also, for you have intervened on behalf of your sisters. Because of your sins in which you acted more abominably than they, they are more in the right than you. So be ashamed, you also, and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

53 (DD)“I will restore their fortunes, both the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters, and I will restore your own fortunes in their midst, 54 that you may bear your disgrace (DE)and be ashamed of all that you have done, (DF)becoming a consolation to them. 55 As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters shall return to their former state, (DG)and Samaria and her daughters shall return (DH)to their former state, (DI)and you and your daughters shall return (DJ)to your former state. 56 Was not your sister Sodom a byword in your mouth (DK)in the day of your pride, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered? Now you have become (DL)an object of reproach for the daughters of Syria[h] and all those around her, and for (DM)the daughters of the Philistines, (DN)those all around who despise you. 58 (DO)You bear the penalty of your lewdness and your abominations, declares the Lord.

The Lord's Everlasting Covenant

59 “For thus says the Lord God: I will deal with you as you have done, you (DP)who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant, 60 yet (DQ)I will remember my covenant with you (DR)in the days of your youth, (DS)and I will establish for you an everlasting covenant. 61 (DT)Then you will remember your ways (DU)and be ashamed when you take (DV)your sisters, both your elder and your younger, and I give them to you (DW)as daughters, but not on account of[i] the covenant with you. 62 I will establish my covenant with you, (DX)and you shall know that I am the Lord, 63 that you may remember and be confounded, and (DY)never open your mouth again because of your shame, when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord God.”

Jerusalem as a Useless Vine

15 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, how is the wood of a vine(A) different from that of a branch from any of the trees in the forest? Is wood ever taken from it to make anything useful?(B) Do they make pegs(C) from it to hang things on? And after it is thrown on the fire as fuel and the fire burns both ends and chars the middle, is it then useful for anything?(D) If it was not useful for anything when it was whole, how much less can it be made into something useful when the fire has burned it and it is charred?

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: As I have given the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest as fuel for the fire, so will I treat the people living in Jerusalem. I will set my face against(E) them. Although they have come out of the fire(F), the fire will yet consume them. And when I set my face against them, you will know that I am the Lord.(G) I will make the land desolate(H) because they have been unfaithful,(I) declares the Sovereign Lord.”

Jerusalem as an Adulterous Wife

16 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, confront(J) Jerusalem with her detestable practices(K) and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry(L) and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father(M) was an Amorite(N) and your mother a Hittite.(O) On the day you were born(P) your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.

“‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!”[a](Q) I made you grow(R) like a plant of the field. You grew and developed and entered puberty. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, yet you were stark naked.(S)

“‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment(T) over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant(U) with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.(V)

“‘I bathed you with water and washed(W) the blood from you and put ointments on you. 10 I clothed you with an embroidered(X) dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen(Y) and covered you with costly garments.(Z) 11 I adorned you with jewelry:(AA) I put bracelets(AB) on your arms and a necklace(AC) around your neck, 12 and I put a ring on your nose,(AD) earrings(AE) on your ears and a beautiful crown(AF) on your head.(AG) 13 So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes(AH) were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was honey, olive oil(AI) and the finest flour. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen.(AJ) 14 And your fame(AK) spread among the nations on account of your beauty,(AL) because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AM)

15 “‘But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by(AN) and your beauty became his.(AO) 16 You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places,(AP) where you carried on your prostitution.(AQ) You went to him, and he possessed your beauty.[b] 17 You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them.(AR) 18 And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense(AS) before them. 19 Also the food I provided for you—the flour, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat—you offered as fragrant incense before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AT)

20 “‘And you took your sons and daughters(AU) whom you bore to me(AV) and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough?(AW) 21 You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.(AX) 22 In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth,(AY) when you were naked and bare,(AZ) kicking about in your blood.(BA)

23 “‘Woe!(BB) Woe to you, declares the Sovereign Lord. In addition to all your other wickedness, 24 you built a mound for yourself and made a lofty shrine(BC) in every public square.(BD) 25 At every street corner(BE) you built your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, spreading your legs with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by.(BF) 26 You engaged in prostitution(BG) with the Egyptians,(BH) your neighbors with large genitals, and aroused my anger(BI) with your increasing promiscuity.(BJ) 27 So I stretched out my hand(BK) against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over(BL) to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines,(BM) who were shocked by your lewd conduct. 28 You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians(BN) too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied.(BO) 29 Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia,[c](BP) a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.(BQ)

30 “‘I am filled with fury against you,[d] declares the Sovereign Lord, when you do all these things, acting like a brazen prostitute!(BR) 31 When you built your mounds at every street corner and made your lofty shrines(BS) in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment.

32 “‘You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! 33 All prostitutes receive gifts,(BT) but you give gifts(BU) to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your illicit favors.(BV) 34 So in your prostitution you are the opposite of others; no one runs after you for your favors. You are the very opposite, for you give payment and none is given to you.

35 “‘Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord! 36 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you poured out your lust and exposed your naked body in your promiscuity with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because you gave them your children’s blood,(BW) 37 therefore I am going to gather all your lovers, with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and will strip(BX) you in front of them, and they will see you stark naked.(BY) 38 I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood;(BZ) I will bring on you the blood vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger.(CA) 39 Then I will deliver you into the hands(CB) of your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines. They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry and leave you stark naked.(CC) 40 They will bring a mob against you, who will stone(CD) you and hack you to pieces with their swords. 41 They will burn down(CE) your houses and inflict punishment on you in the sight of many women.(CF) I will put a stop(CG) to your prostitution, and you will no longer pay your lovers. 42 Then my wrath against you will subside and my jealous anger will turn away from you; I will be calm and no longer angry.(CH)

43 “‘Because you did not remember(CI) the days of your youth but enraged me with all these things, I will surely bring down(CJ) on your head what you have done, declares the Sovereign Lord. Did you not add lewdness to all your other detestable practices?(CK)

44 “‘Everyone who quotes proverbs(CL) will quote this proverb about you: “Like mother, like daughter.” 45 You are a true daughter of your mother, who despised(CM) her husband(CN) and her children; and you are a true sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.(CO) 46 Your older sister(CP) was Samaria, who lived to the north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you with her daughters, was Sodom.(CQ) 47 You not only followed their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved than they.(CR) 48 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign(CS) Lord, your sister Sodom(CT) and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.(CU)

49 “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom:(CV) She and her daughters were arrogant,(CW) overfed and unconcerned;(CX) they did not help the poor and needy.(CY) 50 They were haughty(CZ) and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.(DA) 51 Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done.(DB) 52 Bear your disgrace, for you have furnished some justification for your sisters. Because your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more righteous(DC) than you. So then, be ashamed and bear(DD) your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

53 “‘However, I will restore(DE) the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them,(DF) 54 so that you may bear your disgrace(DG) and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort. 55 And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to what they were before; and you and your daughters will return to what you were before.(DH) 56 You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride, 57 before your wickedness was uncovered. Even so, you are now scorned(DI) by the daughters of Edom[e](DJ) and all her neighbors and the daughters of the Philistines—all those around you who despise you. 58 You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your detestable practices, declares the Lord.(DK)

59 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have despised my oath by breaking the covenant.(DL) 60 Yet I will remember the covenant(DM) I made with you in the days of your youth,(DN) and I will establish an everlasting covenant(DO) with you. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed(DP) when you receive your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are younger. I will give them to you as daughters,(DQ) but not on the basis of my covenant with you. 62 So I will establish my covenant(DR) with you, and you will know that I am the Lord.(DS) 63 Then, when I make atonement(DT) for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed(DU) and never again open your mouth(DV) because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign Lord.(DW)’”

Sacrifices Pleasing to God

13 Let (A)brotherly love continue. (B)Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby (C)some have entertained angels unawares. (D)Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. (E)Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge (F)the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life (G)free from love of money, and (H)be content with what you have, for he has said, (I)“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say,

(J)“The Lord is my helper;
    (K)I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”

Remember (L)your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and (M)imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is (N)the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be (O)led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, (P)not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. 10 We have an altar (Q)from which those who serve the tent[a] have no right to eat. 11 For (R)the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned (S)outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also (T)suffered (U)outside the gate in order to sanctify the people (V)through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear (W)the reproach he endured. 14 For (X)here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 (Y)Through him then let us continually offer up (Z)a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, (AA)the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and (AB)to share what you have, for such (AC)sacrifices are pleasing to God.

17 Obey (AD)your leaders and submit to them, (AE)for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to (AF)give an account. (AG)Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

18 (AH)Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. 19 I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order (AI)that I may be restored to you the sooner.

Benediction

20 Now (AJ)may the God of peace (AK)who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, (AL)the great shepherd of the sheep, by (AM)the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 (AN)equip you with everything good that you may do his will, (AO)working in us[b] that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, (AP)to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

22 I appeal to you, brothers,[c] bear with my word of exhortation, for (AQ)I have written to you briefly. 23 You should know that (AR)our brother Timothy has been released, with whom I shall see you if he comes soon. 24 Greet all (AS)your leaders and all the saints. Those who come from Italy send you greetings. 25 (AT)Grace be with all of you.

Concluding Exhortations

13 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters.(A) Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers,(B) for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.(C) Continue to remember those in prison(D) as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.

Marriage should be honored by all,(E) and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.(F) Keep your lives free from the love of money(G) and be content with what you have,(H) because God has said,

“Never will I leave you;
    never will I forsake you.”[a](I)

So we say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”[b](J)

Remember your leaders,(K) who spoke the word of God(L) to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate(M) their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.(N)

Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.(O) It is good for our hearts to be strengthened(P) by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods,(Q) which is of no benefit to those who do so.(R) 10 We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle(S) have no right to eat.(T)

11 The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering,(U) but the bodies are burned outside the camp.(V) 12 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate(W) to make the people holy(X) through his own blood.(Y) 13 Let us, then, go to him(Z) outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore.(AA) 14 For here we do not have an enduring city,(AB) but we are looking for the city that is to come.(AC)

15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice(AD) of praise—the fruit of lips(AE) that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others,(AF) for with such sacrifices(AG) God is pleased.

17 Have confidence in your leaders(AH) and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you(AI) as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.

18 Pray for us.(AJ) We are sure that we have a clear conscience(AK) and desire to live honorably in every way. 19 I particularly urge you to pray so that I may be restored to you soon.(AL)

Benediction and Final Greetings

20 Now may the God of peace,(AM) who through the blood of the eternal covenant(AN) brought back from the dead(AO) our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,(AP) 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will,(AQ) and may he work in us(AR) what is pleasing to him,(AS) through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.(AT)

22 Brothers and sisters, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for in fact I have written to you quite briefly.(AU)

23 I want you to know that our brother Timothy(AV) has been released. If he arrives soon, I will come with him to see you.

24 Greet all your leaders(AW) and all the Lord’s people. Those from Italy(AX) send you their greetings.

25 Grace be with you all.(AY)
