20 “Go, stand in the temple and tell the people the whole message about this life.”(A) 21 When they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and went on with their teaching.

When the high priest and those with him arrived, they called together the council and the whole body of the elders of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought.(B) 22 But when the temple police went there, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, 23 “We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.” 24 Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were perplexed about them, wondering what might be going on.(C) 25 Then someone arrived and announced, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!” 26 Then the captain went with the temple police and brought them, but without violence, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.(D)

27 When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them, 28 saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,[a] yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.”(E) 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than any human authority.[b](F)

20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”(A)

21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates(B) arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin(C)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.(D) So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests(E) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people(F) would stone them.

27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin(G) to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”(H) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”(I)

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!(J)

Elijah Meets God at Horeb

Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”(B)
