The New Temple

40 In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month in the fourteenth year after Jerusalem had been captured,(A) on that very day the Lord’s hand was on me,(B) and He brought me there. In visions of God(C) He took me to the land of Israel and set me down on a very high mountain.(D) On its southern slope was a structure resembling a city. He brought me there, and I saw a man whose appearance was like bronze,(E) with a linen cord and a measuring rod in his hand.(F) He was standing by the gate. He spoke to me: “Son of man, look with your eyes, listen with your ears,(G) and pay attention to everything I am going to show you, for you have been brought here so that I might show it to you. Report everything you see to the house of Israel.”(H)

The Wall and Outer Gates

Now there was a wall surrounding the outside of the temple.(I) The measuring rod in the man’s hand was six units of 21 inches;[a] each unit was the standard length plus three inches.[b] He measured the thickness of the wall structure; it was about 10 feet,[c] and its height was the same.[d] Then he came to the gate that faced east and climbed its steps.(J) He measured the threshold of the gate; it was 10 feet deep—the first threshold was 10 feet deep. Each recess was about 10 feet[e] long and 10 feet[f] deep, and there was a space of 8¾ feet[g] between the recesses. The inner threshold of the gate on the temple side next to the gate’s portico was about 10 feet.[h] Next he measured the portico of the gate; it[i] was 14 feet,[j] and its pilasters were 3½ feet.[k] The portico of the gate was on the temple side.

10 There were three recesses on each side of the east gate, each with the same measurements, and the pilasters on either side also had the same measurements. 11 Then he measured the width of the gate’s entrance; it was 17½ feet,[l] while the width[m] of the gateway was 22¾ feet.[n] 12 There was a barrier of 21 inches[o] in front of the recesses on both sides, and the recesses on each side were 10½ feet[p] square. 13 Then he measured the gateway from the roof of one recess to the roof of the opposite one; the distance was 43¾ feet.[q] The openings of the recesses faced each other. 14 Next, he measured the pilasters—105 feet.[r] The gate extended around to the pilaster of the court.[s] 15 The distance from the front of the gate at the entrance to the front of the gate’s portico on the inside was 87½ feet.[t] 16 The recesses and their pilasters had beveled windows all around the inside of the gateway.(K) The porticoes also had windows all around on the inside. Each pilaster was decorated with palm trees.(L)

17 Then he brought me into the outer court,(M) and there were chambers and a paved surface laid out all around the court.(N) Thirty chambers faced the pavement, 18 which flanked the gates and corresponded to the length of the gates; this was the lower pavement. 19 Then he measured the distance from the front of the lower gate to the exterior front of the inner court; it was 175 feet.[u] This was the east; next the north is described.

20 He measured the gate of the outer court facing north, both its length and width. 21 Its three recesses on each side, its pilasters, and its portico had the same measurements as the first gate: 87½ feet[v] long and 43¾ feet[w] wide. 22 Its windows, portico, and palm trees had the same measurements as those of the gate that faced east. Seven steps led up to the gate, and its portico was ahead of them. 23 The inner court had a gate facing the north gate, like the one on the east. He measured the distance from gate to gate; it was 175 feet.[x]

24 He brought me to the south side, and there was also a gate on the south. He measured its pilasters and portico; they had the same measurements as the others. 25 Both the gate and its portico had windows all around, like the other windows. It was 87½ feet[y] long and 43¾ feet[z] wide. 26 Its stairway had seven steps, and its portico was ahead of them. It had palm trees on its pilasters, one on each side. 27 The inner court had a gate on the south. He measured from gate to gate on the south; it was 175 feet.[aa]

The Inner Gates

28 Then he brought me to the inner court through the south gate. When he measured the south gate, it had the same measurements as the others. 29 Its recesses, pilasters, and portico had the same measurements as the others. Both it and its portico had windows all around. It was 87½ feet[ab] long and 43¾ feet[ac] wide. 30 (There were porticoes all around, 43¾ feet long and 8¾ feet[ad] wide.[ae]) 31 Its portico faced the outer court, and its pilasters were decorated with palm trees. Its stairway had eight steps.

32 Then he brought me to the inner court on the east side. When he measured the gate, it had the same measurements as the others. 33 Its recesses, pilasters, and portico had the same measurements as the others. Both it and its portico had windows all around. It was 87½ feet[af] long and 43¾ feet[ag] wide. 34 Its portico faced the outer court, and its pilasters were decorated with palm trees on each side. Its stairway had eight steps.

35 Then he brought me to the north gate.(O) When he measured it, it had the same measurements as the others, 36 as did its recesses, pilasters, and portico. It also had windows all around. It was 87½ feet[ah] long and 43¾ feet[ai] wide. 37 Its portico[aj] faced the outer court, and its pilasters were decorated with palm trees on each side. Its stairway had eight steps.

Rooms for Preparing Sacrifices

38 There was a chamber whose door opened into the portico of the gate.[ak] The burnt offering was to be washed there.(P) 39 Inside the portico of the gate there were two tables on each side, on which to slaughter the burnt offering, sin offering,(Q) and restitution offering.(R) 40 Outside, as one approaches the entrance of the north gate, there were two tables on one side and two more tables on the other side of the gate’s portico. 41 So there were four tables inside the gate and four outside, eight tables in all on which the slaughtering was to be done. 42 There were also four tables of cut stone for the burnt offering,(S) each 31½ inches[al] long, 31½ inches wide, and 21 inches[am] high. The utensils used to slaughter the burnt offerings and other sacrifices were placed on them. 43 There were three-inch[an] hooks[ao] fastened all around the inside of the room, and the flesh of the offering was to be laid on the tables.

Rooms for Singers and Priests

44 Outside the inner gate, within the inner court, there were chambers for the singers:[ap](T) one[aq] beside the north gate, facing south, and another beside the south[ar] gate, facing north. 45 Then the man said to me: “This chamber that faces south is for the priests who keep charge of the temple.(U) 46 The chamber that faces north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok,(V) the ones from the sons of Levi who may approach the Lord to serve Him.”(W) 47 Next he measured the court. It was square, 175 feet[as] long and 175 feet wide. The altar(X) was in front of the temple.

48 Then he brought me to the portico of the temple and measured the pilasters of the portico; they were 8¾ feet[at] thick on each side. The width of the gateway was 24½ feet,[au] and the side walls of the gate were[av] 5¼ feet[aw] wide on each side. 49 The portico was 35 feet[ax] across and 21[ay] feet[az] deep, and 10 steps led[ba] up to it.(Y) There were pillars by the pilasters, one on each side.(Z)

Inside the Temple

41 Next he brought me into the great hall and measured the pilasters;(AA) on each side the width of the pilaster was 10½ feet.[bb][bc] The width of the entrance was 17½ feet,[bd] and the side walls of the entrance were 8¾ feet[be] wide on each side. He also measured the length of the great hall, 70 feet,[bf] and the width, 35 feet.[bg](AB) He went inside the next room and measured the pilasters at the entrance;(AC) they were 3½ feet[bh] wide. The entrance was 10½ feet[bi] wide, and the width of the entrance’s side walls on each side[bj] was 12¼ feet.[bk] He then measured the length of the room adjacent to the great hall, 35 feet,[bl] and the width, 35 feet.(AD) And he said to me, “This is the most holy place.”(AE)

Outside the Temple

Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was 10½ feet[bm] thick. The width of the side rooms all around the temple was seven feet.[bn](AF) The side rooms were arranged one above another in three stories of 30 rooms each.[bo] There were ledges on the wall of the temple all around to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be in the temple wall itself.(AG) The side rooms surrounding the temple widened at each successive story, for the structure surrounding the temple went up by stages. This was the reason for the temple’s broadness as it rose. And so, one would go up from the lowest story to the highest by means of the middle one.[bp](AH)

I saw that the temple had a raised platform surrounding it; this foundation for the side rooms was 10½ feet high.[bq](AI) The thickness of the outer wall of the side rooms was 8¾ feet.[br] The free space between the side rooms of the temple 10 and the outer chambers was 35 feet[bs] wide all around the temple.(AJ) 11 The side rooms opened into the free space, one entrance toward the north and another to the south. The area of free space was 8¾ feet[bt] wide all around.

12 Now the building that faced the temple yard toward the west was 122½ feet[bu] wide. The wall of the building was 8¾ feet[bv] thick on all sides, and the building’s length was 157½ feet.[bw]

13 Then the man measured the temple; it was 175 feet[bx] long.(AK) In addition, the temple yard and the building, including its walls, were 175 feet long. 14 The width of the front of the temple along with the temple yard to the east was 175 feet. 15 Next he measured the length of the building facing the temple yard to the west, with its galleries[by] on each side;(AL) it was 175 feet.

Interior Wooden Structures

The interior of the great hall and the porticoes of the court— 16 the thresholds, the beveled windows,(AM) and the balconies all around with their three levels opposite the threshold—were overlaid with wood on all sides.(AN) They were paneled from the ground to the windows (but the windows were covered), 17 reaching to the top of the entrance, and as far as the inner temple and on the outside. On every wall all around, on the inside and outside, was a pattern 18 carved with cherubim and palm trees.(AO) There was a palm tree between each pair of cherubim.(AP) Each cherub had two faces: 19 a human face turned toward the palm tree on one side,(AQ) and a lion’s face turned toward it on the other. They were carved throughout the temple on all sides. 20 Cherubim and palm trees were carved from the ground to the top of the entrance and on the wall of the great hall.

21 The doorposts of the great hall were square,(AR) and the front of the sanctuary had the same appearance. 22 The altar was[bz] made of wood, 5¼ feet[ca] high and 3½ feet[cb] long.[cc] It had corners, and its length[cd] and sides were of wood.(AS) The man told me, “This is the table that stands before the Lord.”(AT)

23 The great hall and the sanctuary each had a double door,(AU) 24 and each of the doors had two swinging panels.(AV) There were two panels for one door and two for the other. 25 Cherubim and palm trees were carved on the doors of the great hall like those carved on the walls. There was a wooden canopy[ce](AW) outside, in front of the portico. 26 There were beveled windows and palm trees on both sides,(AX) on the side walls of the portico, the side rooms of the temple, and the canopies.[cf]

The Priests’ Chambers

42 Then the man led me out by way of the north gate into the outer court.(AY) He brought me to the group of chambers opposite the temple yard and opposite the building(AZ) to the north. Along the length of the chambers, which was 175 feet,[cg](BA) there was an entrance on the north; the width was 87½ feet.[ch] Opposite the 35 foot space[ci] belonging to the inner court and opposite the paved surface(BB) belonging to the outer court, the structure rose gallery by gallery(BC) in three tiers. In front of the chambers was a walkway toward the inside,(BD) 17½ feet[cj] wide and 175 feet[ck] long,[cl] and their entrances were on the north. The upper chambers were narrower because the galleries took away more space from them than from the lower and middle stories of the building. For they were arranged in three stories and had no pillars like the pillars of the courts;(BE) therefore the upper chambers were set back from the ground more than the lower and middle stories. A wall on the outside ran in front of the chambers, parallel to them, toward the outer court; it was 87½ feet[cm] long. For the chambers on the outer court were 87½ feet long, while those facing the great hall were 175 feet[cn] long.(BF) At the base of these chambers there was an entryway on the east side as one enters them from the outer court.(BG)

10 In the thickness of the wall of the court toward the south,[co] there were chambers facing the temple yard(BH) and the western building, 11 with a passageway in front of them, just like the chambers that faced north.(BI) Their length and width, as well as all their exits, measurements, and entrances, were identical. 12 The entrance at the beginning of the passageway, the way in front of the corresponding[cp] wall as one enters on the east side, was similar to the entrances of the chambers that were on the south side.

13 Then the man said to me, “The northern and southern chambers that face the temple yard are the holy chambers where the priests who approach the Lord will eat(BJ) the most holy offerings.(BK) There they will deposit the most holy offerings—the grain offerings, sin offerings, and restitution offerings—for the place is holy.(BL) 14 Once the priests have entered, they must not go out from the holy area to the outer court until they have removed the clothes they minister in, for these are holy.(BM) They are to put on other clothes before they approach the public area.”(BN)

Outside Dimensions of the Temple Complex

15 When he finished measuring inside the temple complex, he led me out by way of the gate that faced east and measured all around the complex.(BO)

16 He measured the east side with a measuring rod;
it was 875 feet[cq] by the measuring rod.[cr]
17 He[cs] measured the north side;
it was 875 feet[ct] by the measuring rod.[cu]
18 He[cv] measured the south side;
it was 875 feet[cw] by the measuring rod.[cx]
19 Then he turned to the west side
and measured 875 feet[cy] by the measuring rod.[cz]

20 He measured the temple complex on all four sides. It had a wall all around it,(BP) 875 feet long and 875 feet(BQ) wide, to separate the holy from the common.(BR)

Return of the Lord’s Glory

43 He led me to the gate,(BS) the one that faces east, and I saw the glory of the God of Israel(BT) coming from the east.(BU) His voice sounded like the roar of mighty waters,(BV) and the earth shone with His glory.(BW) The vision I saw(BX) was like the one I had seen when He[da] came to destroy the city,(BY) and like the ones I had seen by the Chebar Canal.(BZ) I fell facedown.(CA) The glory of the Lord entered the temple by way of the gate that faced east.(CB) Then the Spirit lifted me up(CC) and brought me to the inner court, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.(CD)

While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from the temple.(CE) He said to me: “Son of man, this is the place of My throne and the place for the soles of My feet,(CF) where I will dwell among the Israelites forever.(CG) The house of Israel and their kings will no longer defile My holy name by their religious prostitution and by the corpses[db](CH) of their kings at their high places.[dc](CI) Whenever they placed their threshold next to My threshold and their doorposts beside My doorposts, with only a wall between Me and them, they were defiling My holy name by the detestable acts they committed.(CJ) So I destroyed them in My anger. Now let them remove their prostitution and the corpses[dd](CK) of their kings far from Me, and I will dwell among them forever.(CL)

10 “As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel,(CM) so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities.(CN) Let them measure its pattern,(CO) 11 and they will be ashamed of all that they have done. Reveal[de] the design of the temple to them—its layout with its exits and entrances(CP)—its complete design along with all its statutes, design specifications, and laws. Write it down in their sight(CQ) so that they may observe its complete design and all its statutes and may carry them out.(CR) 12 This is the law of the temple: all its surrounding territory on top of the mountain(CS) will be especially holy. Yes, this is the law of the temple.

The Altar

13 “These are the measurements of the altar(CT) in units of length (each unit being the standard length plus three inches(CU)):[df] the gutter is 21 inches[dg] deep and 21 inches wide, with a rim of nine inches[dh] around its edge. This is the base[di] of the altar. 14 The distance from the gutter on the ground to the lower ledge is 3½ feet,[dj] and the width of the ledge is 21 inches.[dk] There are seven feet[dl] from the small ledge to the large ledge, whose width is also 21 inches. 15 The altar hearth[dm] is seven feet[dn] high, and four horns(CV) project upward from the hearth. 16 The hearth is square, 21 feet[do] long by 21 feet wide.(CW) 17 The ledge is 24½ feet[dp] long by 24½ feet wide, with four equal sides.(CX) The rim all around it is 10½ inches,[dq] and its gutter is 21 inches[dr] all around it. The altar’s steps face east.”(CY)

18 Then He said to me: “Son of man,(CZ) this is what the Lord God says: These are the statutes for the altar on the day it is constructed, so that burnt offerings(DA) may be sacrificed on it and blood may be sprinkled on it:(DB) 19 You are to give a bull from the herd(DC) as a sin offering(DD) to the Levitical priests who are from the offspring of Zadok,(DE) who approach Me in order to serve Me.”(DF) This is the declaration of the Lord God. 20 “You must take some of its blood and apply it to the four horns(DG) of the altar, the four corners of the ledge, and all around the rim. In this way you will purify the altar and make atonement for it.(DH) 21 Then you must take away the bull for the sin offering, and it must be burned outside the sanctuary in the place appointed for the temple.(DI)

22 “On the second day you are to present an unblemished male goat as a sin offering. They will purify the altar just as they did with the bull. 23 When you have finished the purification, you are to present a young, unblemished bull(DJ) and an unblemished ram from the flock.(DK) 24 You must present them before the Lord; the priests will throw salt on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the Lord.(DL) 25 You will offer a goat for a sin offering each day for seven days.(DM) A young bull and a ram from the flock, both unblemished, must also be offered. 26 For seven days the priests are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it. In this way they will consecrate it[ds] 27 and complete the days of purification. Then on the eighth day(DN) and afterward, the priests will offer your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar, and I will accept you.”(DO) This is the declaration of the Lord God.

The Prince’s Privilege

44 The man then brought me back toward the sanctuary’s outer gate that faced east, and it was closed. The Lord said to me: “This gate will remain closed. It will not be opened, and no one will enter through it, because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it.(DP) Therefore it will remain closed. The prince himself will sit in the gateway to eat a meal before the Lord.(DQ) He must enter by way of the portico(DR) of the gate and go out the same way.”

Then the man brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple. I looked, and the glory of the Lord filled His temple.(DS) And I fell facedown.(DT) The Lord said to me: “Son of man, pay attention;(DU) look with your eyes and listen with your ears to everything I tell you about all the statutes and laws of the Lord’s temple.(DV) Take careful note of the entrance of the temple along with all the exits of the sanctuary.

The Levites’ Duties and Privileges

“Say to the rebellious people,(DW) the house of Israel: This is what the Lord God says: I have had enough(DX) of all your detestable practices, house of Israel. When you brought in foreigners,(DY) uncircumcised in both heart and flesh,(DZ) to occupy My sanctuary, you defiled My temple while you offered My food—the fat and the blood. You[dt] broke My covenant by all your detestable practices. You have not kept charge of My holy things(EA) but have appointed others to keep charge of My sanctuary for you.

“This is what the Lord God says: No foreigner, uncircumcised in heart and flesh, may enter My sanctuary, not even a foreigner who is among the Israelites. 10 Surely the Levites who wandered away from Me when Israel went astray, and who strayed from Me after their idols,(EB) will bear the consequences of their sin.(EC) 11 Yet they will occupy My sanctuary, serving as guards at the temple gates(ED) and ministering at the temple. They will slaughter the burnt offerings(EE) and other sacrifices for the people and will stand before them to serve them.(EF) 12 Because they ministered to the house of Israel before their idols and became a sinful stumbling block to them, therefore I swore an oath[du] against them”(EG)—this is the declaration of the Lord God—“that they would bear the consequences of their sin. 13 They must not approach Me to serve Me as priests(EH) or come near any of My holy things or the most holy things. They will bear their disgrace and the consequences of the detestable acts they committed. 14 Yet I will make them responsible for the duties of the temple(EI)—for all its work and everything done in it.

The Priests’ Duties and Privileges

15 “But the Levitical priests descended from Zadok,(EJ) who kept charge of My sanctuary when the Israelites went astray from Me, will approach Me to serve Me. They will stand before Me to offer Me fat and blood.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. 16 “They are the ones who may enter My sanctuary(EK) and draw near to My table to serve Me.(EL) They will keep My mandate. 17 When they enter the gates of the inner court they must wear linen garments;(EM) they must not have on them anything made of wool when they minister at the gates of the inner court and within it. 18 They must wear linen turbans on their heads and linen undergarments around their waists.(EN) They are not to put on anything that makes them sweat. 19 Before they go out to the outer court,[dv] to the people, they must take off the clothes they have been ministering in, leave them in the holy chambers, and dress in other clothes(EO) so that they do not transmit holiness to the people through their clothes.(EP)

20 “They may not shave their heads(EQ) or let their hair grow long,(ER) but must carefully trim their hair. 21 No priest may drink wine before he enters the inner court.(ES) 22 He is not to marry a widow or a divorced woman, but must marry a virgin from the offspring of the house of Israel,(ET) or a widow who is the widow of a priest. 23 They must teach My people the difference between the holy and the common, and explain to them the difference between the clean and the unclean.(EU)

24 “In a dispute, they will officiate as judges and decide the case according to My ordinances.(EV) They must observe My laws and statutes regarding all My appointed festivals, and keep My Sabbaths holy.(EW) 25 A priest may not come near a dead person so that he becomes defiled.(EX) However, he may defile himself for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister. 26 After he is cleansed, he is to count off seven days for himself.(EY) 27 On the day he goes into the sanctuary, into the inner court(EZ) to minister in the sanctuary, he must present his sin offering.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

28 “This will be their inheritance: I am their inheritance.(FA) You are to give them no possession in Israel: I am their possession. 29 They will eat the grain offering, the sin offering,(FB) and the restitution offering. Everything in Israel that is permanently dedicated to the Lord will belong to them.(FC) 30 The best of all the firstfruits of every kind and contribution of every kind from all your gifts will belong to the priests.(FD) You are to give your first batch of dough to the priest(FE) so that a blessing may rest on your homes.(FF) 31 The priests may not eat any bird or animal that died naturally or was mauled by wild beasts.(FG)

The Sacred Portion of the Land

45 “When you divide the land by lot as an inheritance,(FH) you must set aside a donation to the Lord, a holy portion of the land,(FI) 8⅓ miles[dw] long and 6⅔ miles[dx] wide. This entire tract of land will be holy. In this area there will be a square section[dy] for the sanctuary, 875 by 875 feet,[dz](FJ) with 87½ feet[ea] of open space all around it. From this holy portion,[eb] you will measure off an area 8⅓ miles[ec] long and 3⅓ miles[ed] wide, in which the sanctuary, the most holy place,(FK) will stand.[ee] It will be a holy area of the land to be used by the priests who minister in the sanctuary, who draw near to serve the Lord.(FL) It will be a place for their houses, as well as a holy area for the sanctuary. There will be another area 8⅓ miles[ef] long and 3⅓ miles[eg] wide for the Levites who minister in the temple;(FM) it will be their possession for towns to live in.[eh]

“As the property of the city, you must set aside an area 1⅔ of a mile[ei] wide and 8⅓ miles[ej] long, adjacent to the holy donation of land.(FN) It will be for the whole house of Israel. And the prince will have the area on each side of the holy donation of land and the city’s property, adjacent to the holy donation and the city’s property, stretching to the west on the west side and to the east on the east side.(FO) Its length will correspond to one of the tribal portions from the western boundary to the eastern boundary. This will be his land as a possession in Israel. My princes will no longer oppress My people(FP) but give the rest of the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes.

“This is what the Lord God says: You have gone too far,[ek](FQ) princes of Israel! Put away violence and oppression and do what is just and right.(FR) Put an end to your evictions of My people.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. 10 “You must have honest scales, an honest dry measure,[el] and an honest liquid measure.[em](FS) 11 The dry measure[en] and the liquid measure[eo] will be uniform, with the liquid measure containing 5½ gallons[ep] and the dry measure holding half a bushel.[eq] Their measurement will be a tenth of the standard larger capacity measure.[er] 12 The shekel will weigh 20 gerahs.(FT) Your mina will equal 60 shekels.

The People’s Contribution to the Sacrifices

13 “This is the contribution you are to offer: Three quarts[es] from five bushels[et] of wheat and[eu] three quarts from five bushels of barley. 14 The quota of oil in liquid measures[ev] will be one percent of every[ew] cor. The cor equals 10 liquid measures or one standard larger capacity measure,[ex] since 10 liquid measures equal one standard larger capacity measure. 15 And the quota from the flock is one animal out of every 200 from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These are for the grain offerings, burnt offerings, and fellowship offerings, to make atonement for the people.”(FU) This is the declaration of the Lord God. 16 “All the people of the land must take part in this contribution for the prince in Israel. 17 Then the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings for the festivals, New Moons, and Sabbaths—for all the appointed times of the house of Israel—will be the prince’s responsibility. He will provide the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and fellowship offerings to make atonement on behalf of the house of Israel.

18 “This is what the Lord God says: In the first month, on the first day of the month, you are to take a young, unblemished bull and purify the sanctuary. 19 The priest must take some of the blood from the sin offering and apply it to the temple doorposts, the four corners of the altar’s ledge, and the doorposts of the gate to the inner court.(FV) 20 You must do the same thing on the seventh day of the month for everyone who sins unintentionally or through ignorance.(FW) In this way you will make atonement for the temple.

21 “In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you are to celebrate the Passover, a festival of seven days during which unleavened bread will be eaten.(FX) 22 On that day the prince will provide a bull as a sin offering on behalf of himself and all the people of the land. 23 During the seven days of the festival, he will provide seven bulls and seven rams without blemish as a burnt offering to the Lord on each of the seven days, along with a male goat each day for a sin offering. 24 He will also provide a grain offering of half a bushel[ey] per bull and half a bushel per ram, along with a gallon[ez] of oil for every half bushel. 25 At the festival that begins on the fifteenth day of the seventh month,[fa](FY) he will provide the same things for seven days—the same sin offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings, and oil.

Sacrifices at Appointed Times

46 “This is what the Lord God says: The gate of the inner court that faces east must be closed during the six days of work, but it will be opened on the Sabbath day(FZ) and opened on the day of the New Moon. The prince should enter from the outside by way of the gate’s portico and stand at the doorpost of the gate while the priests sacrifice his burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He will bow in worship at the threshold of the gate and then depart, but the gate must not be closed until evening. The people of the land will also bow in worship before the Lord at the entrance of that gate on the Sabbaths and New Moons.

“The burnt offering that the prince presents to the Lord(GA) on the Sabbath day is to be six unblemished lambs(GB) and an unblemished ram. The grain offering will be half a bushel[fb] with the ram,(GC) and the grain offering with the lambs will be whatever he wants to give, as well as a gallon[fc] of oil for every half bushel. On the day of the New Moon, the burnt offering is to be a young, unblemished bull, as well as six lambs and a ram without blemish. He will provide a grain offering of half a bushel[fd] with the bull, half a bushel with the ram, and whatever he can afford with the lambs, together with a gallon[fe] of oil for every half bushel. When the prince enters,(GD) he must go in by way of the gate’s portico and go out the same way.

“When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed times,[ff](GE) whoever enters by way of the north gate to worship must go out by way of the south gate, and whoever enters by way of the south gate must go out by way of the north gate. No one must return through the gate by which he entered, but must go out by the opposite gate. 10 When the people enter, the prince will enter with them, and when they leave, he will leave. 11 At the festivals and appointed times, the grain offering will be half a bushel[fg] with the bull, half a bushel with the ram, and whatever he wants to give with the lambs, along with a gallon[fh] of oil for every half bushel.

12 “When the prince makes a freewill offering, whether a burnt offering or a fellowship offering as a freewill offering to the Lord,(GF) the gate that faces east must be opened for him. He is to offer his burnt offering or fellowship offering just as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he will go out, and the gate must be closed after he leaves.

13 “You must offer an unblemished year-old male lamb as a daily burnt offering to the Lord; you will offer it every morning.(GG) 14 You must also prepare a grain offering every morning along with it: three quarts,[fi] with one-third of a gallon[fj] of oil to moisten the fine flour—a grain offering to the Lord. This is a permanent statute to be observed regularly. 15 They will offer the lamb, the grain offering, and the oil every morning as a regular burnt offering.

Transfer of Royal Lands

16 “This is what the Lord God says: If the prince gives a gift to each of his sons as their inheritance, it will belong to his sons. It will become their property by inheritance. 17 But if he gives a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, it will belong to that servant until the year of freedom,(GH) when it will revert to the prince. His inheritance belongs only to his sons; it is theirs. 18 The prince must not take any of the people’s inheritance, evicting them from their property.(GI) He is to provide an inheritance for his sons from his own property, so that none of My people will be displaced from his own property.”

The Temple Kitchens

19 Then he brought me through the entrance(GJ) that was at the side of the gate, into the priests’ holy chambers, which faced north. I saw a place there at the far western end. 20 He said to me, “This is the place where the priests will boil the restitution offering and the sin offering,(GK) and where they will bake the grain offering,(GL) so that they do not bring them into the outer court and transmit holiness to the people.” 21 Next he brought me into the outer court and led me past its four corners. There was a separate court in each of its corners. 22 In the four corners of the outer court there were enclosed[fk] courts, 70 feet[fl] long by 52½ feet[fm] wide. All four corner areas had the same dimensions. 23 There was a stone wall[fn] around the inside of them, around the four of them, with ovens built at the base of the walls on all sides. 24 He said to me: “These are the kitchens where those who minister at the temple will cook the people’s sacrifices.”

The Life-Giving River

47 Then he brought me back to the entrance of the temple and there was water flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the temple faced east. The water was coming down from under the south side of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar.(GM) Next he brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate that faced east; there the water was trickling from the south side. As the man went out east with a measuring line in his hand,(GN) he measured off a third of a mile[fo] and led me through the water. It came up to my ankles. Then he measured off a third of a mile[fp] and led me through the water. It came up to my knees. He measured off another third of a mile[fq] and led me through the water. It came up to my waist. Again he measured off a third of a mile[fr], and it was a river that I could not cross on foot. For the water had risen; it was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be crossed on foot.

He asked me, “Do you see this, son of man?” Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I had returned, I saw a very large number of trees along both sides of the riverbank.(GO) He said to me, “This water flows out to the eastern region and goes down to the Arabah. When it enters the sea, the sea of foul water,[fs][ft] the water of the sea becomes fresh.(GP) Every kind of living creature that swarms will live wherever the river flows,[fu] and there will be a huge number of fish because this water goes there. Since the water will become fresh, there will be life everywhere the river goes. 10 Fishermen will stand beside it from En-gedi to En-eglaim.[fv] These will become places where nets are spread out to dry. Their fish will consist of many different kinds, like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.(GQ) 11 Yet its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be left for salt. 12 All kinds of trees providing food will grow along both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail.(GR) Each month they will bear fresh fruit because the water comes from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for medicine.”(GS)

The Borders of the Land

13 This is what the Lord God says: “This is[fw] the border you will use to divide the land(GT) as an inheritance for the 12 tribes of Israel. Joseph will receive two shares.(GU) 14 You will inherit it in equal portions, since I swore[fx] to give it to your ancestors.(GV) So this land will fall to you as an inheritance.

15 “This is to be the border of the land:

On the north side(GW) it will extend from the Mediterranean Sea by way of Hethlon and Lebo-hamath to Zedad,[fy] 16 Berothah, and Sibraim (which is between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 So the border will run from the sea to Hazar-enon at the border(GX) of Damascus, with the territory of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern side.

18 On the east side it will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel; you will measure from the northern border to the eastern sea.[fz] This will be the eastern side.

19 On the south side it will run from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh,[ga] and on to the Brook of Egypt(GY) as far as the Mediterranean Sea.(GZ) This will be the southern side.

20 On the west side the Mediterranean Sea will be the border, from the southern border up to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This will be the western side.

21 “You are to divide this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel.(HA) 22 You will allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the foreigners living among you,(HB) who have fathered children among you. You will treat them[gb] like native-born Israelites; along with you, they will be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 23 In whatever tribe the foreigner lives, you will assign his inheritance there.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

The Tribal Allotments

48 “Now these are the names of the tribes:

From the northern end, along the road of Hethlon, to Lebo-hamath as far as Hazar-enon, at the northern border of Damascus, alongside Hamath and extending from the eastern side to the sea, will be Dan—one portion.
Next to the territory of Dan, from the east side to the west, will be Asher—one portion.
Next to the territory of Asher, from the east side to the west, will be Naphtali—one portion.
Next to the territory of Naphtali, from the east side to the west, will be Manasseh—one portion.
Next to the territory of Manasseh, from the east side to the west, will be Ephraim—one portion.
Next to the territory of Ephraim, from the east side to the west, will be Reuben—one portion.
Next to the territory of Reuben, from the east side to the west, will be Judah—one portion.

“Next to the territory of Judah, from the east side to the west, will be the portion you donate to the Lord, 8⅓ miles[gc] wide, and as long as one of the tribal portions from the east side to the west.(HC) The sanctuary will be in the middle of it.

“The special portion you donate to the Lord will be 8⅓ miles[gd] long and 3⅓ miles[ge] wide. 10 This holy donation will be set apart for the priests alone. It will be 8⅓ miles[gf] long on the northern side, 3⅓ miles[gg] wide on the western side, 3⅓ miles[gh] wide on the eastern side, and 8⅓ miles[gi] long on the southern side. The Lord’s sanctuary will be in the middle of it. 11 It is for the consecrated priests, the sons of Zadok, who kept My charge(HD) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray. 12 It will be a special donation for them out of the holy donation of the land, a most holy place adjacent to the territory of the Levites.

13 “Next to the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an area 8⅓ miles[gj] long and 3⅓ miles[gk] wide. The total length will be 8⅓ miles[gl] and the width 3⅓ miles.[gm](HE) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it, and they must not transfer this choice part of the land, for it is holy to the Lord.(HF)

15 “The remaining area, 1⅔ of a mile[gn] wide and 8⅓ miles[go] long, will be for common use by the city,(HG) for both residential and open space. The city will be in the middle of it. 16 These are the city’s measurements:

1½ miles[gp] on the north side;
1½ miles[gq] on the south side;
1½ miles[gr] on the east side;
and 1½ miles[gs] on the west side.

17 The city’s open space will extend:

425 feet[gt] to the north,
425 feet[gu] to the south,
425 feet[gv] to the east,
and 425 feet[gw] to the west.

18 “The remainder of the length alongside the holy donation will be 3⅓ miles[gx] to the east and 3⅓ miles[gy] to the west. It will run alongside the holy donation. Its produce will be food for the workers of the city. 19 The city’s workers from all the tribes of Israel will cultivate it.(HH) 20 The entire donation will be 8⅓ miles[gz] by 8⅓ miles;[ha] you are to set apart the holy donation along with the city property as a square area.

21 “The remaining area on both sides of the holy donation and the city property will belong to the prince.(HI) He will own the land adjacent to the tribal portions, next to the 8⅓ miles[hb] of the donation as far as the eastern border and[hc] next to the 8⅓ miles[hd] of the donation as far as the western border. The holy donation and the sanctuary of the temple will be in the middle of it. 22 Except for the Levitical property and the city property in the middle of the area belonging to the prince, the area between the territory of Judah and that of Benjamin will belong to the prince.(HJ)

23 “As for the rest of the tribes:

From the east side to the west, will be Benjamin—one portion.
24 Next to the territory of Benjamin, from the east side to the west, will be Simeon—one portion.
25 Next to the territory of Simeon, from the east side to the west, will be Issachar—one portion.
26 Next to the territory of Issachar, from the east side to the west, will be Zebulun—one portion.
27 Next to the territory of Zebulun, from the east side to the west, will be Gad—one portion.

28 Next to the territory of Gad toward the south side, the border will run from Tamar to the waters(HK) of Meribath-kadesh, to the Brook of Egypt, and out to the Mediterranean Sea. 29 This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to Israel’s tribes,(HL) and these will be their portions.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

The New City

30 “These are the exits of the city:

On the north side, which measures 1½ miles,[he] 31 there will be three gates facing north, the gates of the city being named for the tribes of Israel: one, the gate of Reuben; one, the gate of Judah; and one, the gate of Levi.
32 On the east side, which is 1½ miles,[hf] there will be three gates: one, the gate of Joseph; one, the gate of Benjamin; and one, the gate of Dan.
33 On the south side, which measures 1½ miles,[hg] there will be three gates: one, the gate of Simeon; one, the gate of Issachar; and one, the gate of Zebulun.
34 On the west side, which is 1½ miles,[hh] there will be three gates: one, the gate of Gad; one, the gate of Asher; and one, the gate of Naphtali.

35 The perimeter of the city will be six miles,[hi] and the name of the city from that day on will be: Yahweh Is There.”(HM)

The Temple Area Restored

40 In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth of the month, in the fourteenth year after the fall of the city(A)—on that very day the hand of the Lord was on me(B) and he took me there. In visions(C) of God he took me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain,(D) on whose south side were some buildings that looked like a city. He took me there, and I saw a man whose appearance was like bronze;(E) he was standing in the gateway with a linen cord and a measuring rod(F) in his hand. The man said to me, “Son of man, look carefully and listen closely and pay attention to everything I am going to show you,(G) for that is why you have been brought here. Tell(H) the people of Israel everything you see.(I)

The East Gate to the Outer Court

I saw a wall completely surrounding the temple area. The length of the measuring rod in the man’s hand was six long cubits,[a] each of which was a cubit and a handbreadth. He measured(J) the wall; it was one measuring rod thick and one rod high.

Then he went to the east gate.(K) He climbed its steps and measured the threshold of the gate; it was one rod deep. The alcoves(L) for the guards were one rod long and one rod wide, and the projecting walls between the alcoves were five cubits[b] thick. And the threshold of the gate next to the portico facing the temple was one rod deep.

Then he measured the portico of the gateway; it[c] was eight cubits[d] deep and its jambs were two cubits[e] thick. The portico of the gateway faced the temple.

10 Inside the east gate were three alcoves on each side; the three had the same measurements, and the faces of the projecting walls on each side had the same measurements. 11 Then he measured the width of the entrance of the gateway; it was ten cubits and its length was thirteen cubits.[f] 12 In front of each alcove was a wall one cubit high, and the alcoves were six cubits square. 13 Then he measured the gateway from the top of the rear wall of one alcove to the top of the opposite one; the distance was twenty-five cubits[g] from one parapet opening to the opposite one. 14 He measured along the faces of the projecting walls all around the inside of the gateway—sixty cubits.[h] The measurement was up to the portico[i] facing the courtyard.[j](M) 15 The distance from the entrance of the gateway to the far end of its portico was fifty cubits.[k] 16 The alcoves and the projecting walls inside the gateway were surmounted by narrow parapet openings all around, as was the portico; the openings all around faced inward. The faces of the projecting walls were decorated with palm trees.(N)

The Outer Court

17 Then he brought me into the outer court.(O) There I saw some rooms and a pavement that had been constructed all around the court; there were thirty rooms(P) along the pavement.(Q) 18 It abutted the sides of the gateways and was as wide as they were long; this was the lower pavement. 19 Then he measured the distance from the inside of the lower gateway to the outside of the inner court;(R) it was a hundred cubits[l](S) on the east side as well as on the north.

The North Gate

20 Then he measured the length and width of the north gate, leading into the outer court. 21 Its alcoves(T)—three on each side—its projecting walls and its portico(U) had the same measurements as those of the first gateway. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. 22 Its openings, its portico(V) and its palm tree decorations had the same measurements as those of the gate facing east. Seven steps led up to it, with its portico opposite them.(W) 23 There was a gate to the inner court facing the north gate, just as there was on the east. He measured from one gate to the opposite one; it was a hundred cubits.(X)

The South Gate

24 Then he led me to the south side and I saw the south gate. He measured its jambs and its portico, and they had the same measurements(Y) as the others. 25 The gateway and its portico had narrow openings all around, like the openings of the others. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.(Z) 26 Seven steps led up to it, with its portico opposite them; it had palm tree decorations on the faces of the projecting walls on each side.(AA) 27 The inner court(AB) also had a gate facing south, and he measured from this gate to the outer gate on the south side; it was a hundred cubits.(AC)

The Gates to the Inner Court

28 Then he brought me into the inner court through the south gate, and he measured the south gate; it had the same measurements(AD) as the others. 29 Its alcoves,(AE) its projecting walls and its portico had the same measurements as the others. The gateway and its portico had openings all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.(AF) 30 (The porticoes(AG) of the gateways around the inner court were twenty-five cubits wide and five cubits deep.) 31 Its portico(AH) faced the outer court; palm trees decorated its jambs, and eight steps led up to it.(AI)

32 Then he brought me to the inner court on the east side, and he measured the gateway; it had the same measurements(AJ) as the others. 33 Its alcoves,(AK) its projecting walls and its portico had the same measurements as the others. The gateway and its portico had openings all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. 34 Its portico(AL) faced the outer court; palm trees decorated the jambs on either side, and eight steps led up to it.

35 Then he brought me to the north gate(AM) and measured it. It had the same measurements(AN) as the others, 36 as did its alcoves,(AO) its projecting walls and its portico, and it had openings all around. It was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide. 37 Its portico[m](AP) faced the outer court; palm trees decorated the jambs on either side, and eight steps led up to it.(AQ)

The Rooms for Preparing Sacrifices

38 A room with a doorway was by the portico in each of the inner gateways, where the burnt offerings(AR) were washed. 39 In the portico of the gateway were two tables on each side, on which the burnt offerings,(AS) sin offerings[n](AT) and guilt offerings(AU) were slaughtered.(AV) 40 By the outside wall of the portico of the gateway, near the steps at the entrance of the north gateway were two tables, and on the other side of the steps were two tables. 41 So there were four tables on one side of the gateway and four on the other—eight tables in all—on which the sacrifices were slaughtered. 42 There were also four tables of dressed stone(AW) for the burnt offerings, each a cubit and a half long, a cubit and a half wide and a cubit high.[o] On them were placed the utensils for slaughtering the burnt offerings and the other sacrifices.(AX) 43 And double-pronged hooks, each a handbreadth[p] long, were attached to the wall all around. The tables were for the flesh of the offerings.

The Rooms for the Priests

44 Outside the inner gate, within the inner court, were two rooms, one[q] at the side of the north gate and facing south, and another at the side of the south[r] gate and facing north. 45 He said to me, “The room facing south is for the priests who guard the temple,(AY) 46 and the room facing north(AZ) is for the priests who guard the altar.(BA) These are the sons of Zadok,(BB) who are the only Levites who may draw near to the Lord to minister before him.(BC)

47 Then he measured the court: It was square—a hundred cubits long and a hundred cubits wide. And the altar was in front of the temple.(BD)

The New Temple

48 He brought me to the portico of the temple(BE) and measured the jambs of the portico; they were five cubits wide on either side. The width of the entrance was fourteen cubits[s] and its projecting walls were[t] three cubits[u] wide on either side. 49 The portico(BF) was twenty cubits[v] wide, and twelve[w] cubits[x] from front to back. It was reached by a flight of stairs,[y] and there were pillars(BG) on each side of the jambs.

41 Then the man brought me to the main hall(BH) and measured the jambs; the width of the jambs was six cubits[z] on each side.[aa] The entrance was ten cubits[ab] wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were five cubits[ac] wide. He also measured the main hall; it was forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.[ad](BI)

Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance; each was two cubits[ae] wide. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were seven cubits[af] wide. And he measured the length of the inner sanctuary; it was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits across the end of the main hall.(BJ) He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.(BK)

Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was six cubits thick, and each side room around the temple was four cubits[ag] wide. The side rooms were on three levels, one above another, thirty(BL) on each level. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports were not inserted into the wall of the temple.(BM) The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway(BN) went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.

I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the length of the rod, six long cubits. The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick. The open area between the side rooms of the temple 10 and the priests’ rooms was twenty cubits wide all around the temple. 11 There were entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one on the north and another on the south; and the base adjoining the open area was five cubits wide all around.

12 The building facing the temple courtyard on the west side was seventy cubits[ah] wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.[ai]

13 Then he measured the temple; it was a hundred cubits[aj] long, and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14 The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, was a hundred cubits.(BO)

15 Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, including its galleries(BP) on each side; it was a hundred cubits.

The main hall, the inner sanctuary and the portico facing the court, 16 as well as the thresholds and the narrow windows(BQ) and galleries around the three of them—everything beyond and including the threshold was covered with wood. The floor, the wall up to the windows, and the windows were covered.(BR) 17 In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary and on the walls at regular intervals all around the inner and outer sanctuary 18 were carved(BS) cherubim(BT) and palm trees.(BU) Palm trees alternated with cherubim. Each cherub had two faces:(BV) 19 the face of a human being toward the palm tree on one side and the face of a lion toward the palm tree on the other. They were carved all around the whole temple.(BW) 20 From the floor to the area above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the main hall.

21 The main hall(BX) had a rectangular doorframe, and the one at the front of the Most Holy Place was similar. 22 There was a wooden altar(BY) three cubits[ak] high and two cubits square[al]; its corners, its base[am] and its sides were of wood. The man said to me, “This is the table(BZ) that is before the Lord.” 23 Both the main hall(CA) and the Most Holy Place had double doors.(CB) 24 Each door had two leaves—two hinged leaves(CC) for each door. 25 And on the doors of the main hall were carved cherubim and palm trees like those carved on the walls, and there was a wooden overhang on the front of the portico. 26 On the sidewalls of the portico were narrow windows with palm trees carved on each side. The side rooms of the temple also had overhangs.(CD)

The Rooms for the Priests

42 Then the man led me northward into the outer court and brought me to the rooms(CE) opposite the temple courtyard(CF) and opposite the outer wall on the north side.(CG) The building whose door faced north was a hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide.[an] Both in the section twenty cubits[ao] from the inner court and in the section opposite the pavement of the outer court, gallery(CH) faced gallery at the three levels.(CI) In front of the rooms was an inner passageway ten cubits wide and a hundred cubits[ap] long.[aq] Their doors were on the north.(CJ) Now the upper rooms were narrower, for the galleries took more space from them than from the rooms on the lower and middle floors of the building. The rooms on the top floor had no pillars, as the courts had; so they were smaller in floor space than those on the lower and middle floors. There was an outer wall parallel to the rooms and the outer court; it extended in front of the rooms for fifty cubits. While the row of rooms on the side next to the outer court was fifty cubits long, the row on the side nearest the sanctuary was a hundred cubits long. The lower rooms had an entrance(CK) on the east side as one enters them from the outer court.

10 On the south side[ar] along the length of the wall of the outer court, adjoining the temple courtyard(CL) and opposite the outer wall, were rooms(CM) 11 with a passageway in front of them. These were like the rooms on the north; they had the same length and width, with similar exits and dimensions. Similar to the doorways on the north 12 were the doorways of the rooms on the south. There was a doorway at the beginning of the passageway that was parallel to the corresponding wall extending eastward, by which one enters the rooms.

13 Then he said to me, “The north(CN) and south rooms(CO) facing the temple courtyard(CP) are the priests’ rooms, where the priests who approach the Lord will eat the most holy offerings. There they will put the most holy offerings—the grain offerings,(CQ) the sin offerings[as](CR) and the guilt offerings(CS)—for the place is holy.(CT) 14 Once the priests enter the holy precincts, they are not to go into the outer court until they leave behind the garments(CU) in which they minister, for these are holy. They are to put on other clothes before they go near the places that are for the people.(CV)

15 When he had finished measuring what was inside the temple area, he led me out by the east gate(CW) and measured the area all around: 16 He measured the east side with the measuring rod; it was five hundred cubits.[at][au] 17 He measured the north side; it was five hundred cubits[av] by the measuring rod. 18 He measured the south side; it was five hundred cubits by the measuring rod. 19 Then he turned to the west side and measured; it was five hundred cubits by the measuring rod. 20 So he measured(CX) the area(CY) on all four sides. It had a wall around it,(CZ) five hundred cubits long and five hundred cubits wide,(DA) to separate the holy from the common.(DB)

God’s Glory Returns to the Temple

43 Then the man brought me to the gate facing east,(DC) and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters,(DD) and the land was radiant with his glory.(DE) The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when he[aw] came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown. The glory(DF) of the Lord entered the temple through the gate facing east.(DG) Then the Spirit(DH) lifted me up(DI) and brought me into the inner court, and the glory(DJ) of the Lord filled the temple.(DK)

While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from inside the temple. He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne(DL) and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites forever. The people of Israel will never again defile(DM) my holy name—neither they nor their kings—by their prostitution and the funeral offerings[ax] for their kings at their death.[ay](DN) When they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they defiled my holy name by their detestable practices. So I destroyed them in my anger. Now let them put away from me their prostitution and the funeral offerings for their kings, and I will live among them forever.(DO)

10 “Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed(DP) of their sins. Let them consider its perfection, 11 and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations[az] and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow all its regulations.(DQ)

12 “This is the law of the temple: All the surrounding area(DR) on top of the mountain will be most holy.(DS) Such is the law of the temple.

The Great Altar Restored

13 “These are the measurements of the altar(DT) in long cubits,[ba] that cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth: Its gutter is a cubit deep and a cubit wide, with a rim of one span[bb] around the edge. And this is the height of the altar: 14 From the gutter on the ground up to the lower ledge that goes around the altar it is two cubits high, and the ledge is a cubit wide.[bc] From this lower ledge to the upper ledge that goes around the altar it is four cubits high, and that ledge is also a cubit wide.[bd] 15 Above that, the altar hearth(DU) is four cubits high, and four horns(DV) project upward from the hearth. 16 The altar hearth is square, twelve cubits[be] long and twelve cubits wide.(DW) 17 The upper ledge(DX) also is square, fourteen cubits[bf] long and fourteen cubits wide. All around the altar is a gutter of one cubit with a rim of half a cubit.[bg] The steps(DY) of the altar face east.(DZ)

18 Then he said to me, “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: These will be the regulations for sacrificing burnt offerings(EA) and splashing blood(EB) against the altar when it is built: 19 You are to give a young bull(EC) as a sin offering[bh] to the Levitical priests of the family of Zadok,(ED) who come near(EE) to minister before me, declares the Sovereign Lord. 20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar(EF) and on the four corners of the upper ledge(EG) and all around the rim, and so purify the altar(EH) and make atonement for it. 21 You are to take the bull for the sin offering and burn it in the designated part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.(EI)

22 “On the second day you are to offer a male goat without defect for a sin offering, and the altar is to be purified as it was purified with the bull. 23 When you have finished purifying it, you are to offer a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(EJ) 24 You are to offer them before the Lord, and the priests are to sprinkle salt(EK) on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the Lord.

25 “For seven days(EL) you are to provide a male goat daily for a sin offering; you are also to provide a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(EM) 26 For seven days they are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it; thus they will dedicate it. 27 At the end of these days, from the eighth day(EN) on, the priests are to present your burnt offerings(EO) and fellowship offerings(EP) on the altar. Then I will accept you, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

The Priesthood Restored

44 Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east,(EQ) and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it.(ER) It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence(ES) of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.(ET)

Then the man brought me by way of the north gate(EU) to the front of the temple. I looked and saw the glory of the Lord filling the temple(EV) of the Lord, and I fell facedown.(EW)

The Lord said to me, “Son of man, look carefully, listen closely and give attention to everything I tell you concerning all the regulations and instructions regarding the temple of the Lord. Give attention to the entrance(EX) to the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary.(EY) Say to rebellious Israel,(EZ) ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Enough of your detestable practices, people of Israel! In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart(FA) and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant.(FB) Instead of carrying out your duty in regard to my holy things, you put others in charge of my sanctuary.(FC) This is what the Sovereign Lord says: No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh is to enter my sanctuary, not even the foreigners who live among the Israelites.(FD)

10 “‘The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray(FE) and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin.(FF) 11 They may serve in my sanctuary, having charge of the gates of the temple and serving in it; they may slaughter the burnt offerings(FG) and sacrifices for the people and stand before the people and serve them.(FH) 12 But because they served them in the presence of their idols and made the people of Israel fall(FI) into sin, therefore I have sworn with uplifted hand(FJ) that they must bear the consequences of their sin, declares the Sovereign Lord.(FK) 13 They are not to come near to serve me as priests or come near any of my holy things or my most holy offerings; they must bear the shame(FL) of their detestable practices.(FM) 14 And I will appoint them to guard the temple for all the work that is to be done in it.(FN)

15 “‘But the Levitical priests, who are descendants of Zadok(FO) and who guarded my sanctuary when the Israelites went astray from me, are to come near to minister before me; they are to stand before me to offer sacrifices of fat(FP) and blood, declares the Sovereign Lord.(FQ) 16 They alone are to enter my sanctuary; they alone are to come near my table(FR) to minister before me and serve me as guards.(FS)

17 “‘When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen clothes;(FT) they must not wear any woolen garment while ministering at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple. 18 They are to wear linen turbans(FU) on their heads and linen undergarments(FV) around their waists. They must not wear anything that makes them perspire.(FW) 19 When they go out into the outer court where the people are, they are to take off the clothes they have been ministering in and are to leave them in the sacred rooms, and put on other clothes, so that the people are not consecrated(FX) through contact with their garments.(FY)

20 “‘They must not shave(FZ) their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed.(GA) 21 No priest is to drink wine when he enters the inner court.(GB) 22 They must not marry widows or divorced women; they may marry only virgins of Israelite descent or widows of priests.(GC) 23 They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common(GD) and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.(GE)

24 “‘In any dispute, the priests are to serve as judges(GF) and decide it according to my ordinances. They are to keep my laws and my decrees for all my appointed festivals,(GG) and they are to keep my Sabbaths holy.(GH)

25 “‘A priest must not defile himself by going near a dead person; however, if the dead person was his father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister, then he may defile himself.(GI) 26 After he is cleansed, he must wait seven days.(GJ) 27 On the day he goes into the inner court of the sanctuary(GK) to minister in the sanctuary, he is to offer a sin offering[bi](GL) for himself, declares the Sovereign Lord.

28 “‘I am to be the only inheritance(GM) the priests have. You are to give them no possession in Israel; I will be their possession. 29 They will eat(GN) the grain offerings, the sin offerings and the guilt offerings; and everything in Israel devoted[bj] to the Lord(GO) will belong to them.(GP) 30 The best of all the firstfruits(GQ) and of all your special gifts will belong to the priests. You are to give them the first portion of your ground meal(GR) so that a blessing(GS) may rest on your household.(GT) 31 The priests must not eat anything, whether bird or animal, found dead(GU) or torn by wild animals.(GV)

Israel Fully Restored

45 “‘When you allot the land as an inheritance,(GW) you are to present to the Lord a portion of the land as a sacred district, 25,000 cubits[bk] long and 20,000[bl] cubits[bm] wide; the entire area will be holy.(GX) Of this, a section 500 cubits[bn] square(GY) is to be for the sanctuary, with 50 cubits[bo] around it for open land. In the sacred district, measure off a section 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[bp] wide. In it will be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. It will be the sacred portion of the land for the priests,(GZ) who minister in the sanctuary and who draw near to minister before the Lord. It will be a place for their houses as well as a holy place for the sanctuary.(HA) An area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide will belong to the Levites, who serve in the temple, as their possession for towns to live in.[bq](HB)

“‘You are to give the city as its property an area 5,000 cubits[br] wide and 25,000 cubits long, adjoining the sacred portion; it will belong to all Israel.(HC)

“‘The prince will have the land bordering each side of the area formed by the sacred district and the property of the city. It will extend westward from the west side and eastward from the east side, running lengthwise from the western to the eastern border parallel to one of the tribal portions.(HD) This land will be his possession in Israel. And my princes will no longer oppress my people but will allow the people of Israel to possess the land according to their tribes.(HE)

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have gone far enough, princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression(HF) and do what is just and right.(HG) Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 10 You are to use accurate scales,(HH) an accurate ephah[bs](HI) and an accurate bath.[bt] 11 The ephah(HJ) and the bath are to be the same size, the bath containing a tenth of a homer and the ephah a tenth of a homer; the homer is to be the standard measure for both. 12 The shekel[bu] is to consist of twenty gerahs.(HK) Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one mina.[bv]

13 “‘This is the special gift you are to offer: a sixth of an ephah[bw] from each homer of wheat and a sixth of an ephah[bx] from each homer of barley. 14 The prescribed portion of olive oil, measured by the bath, is a tenth of a bath[by] from each cor (which consists of ten baths or one homer, for ten baths are equivalent to a homer). 15 Also one sheep is to be taken from every flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These will be used for the grain offerings, burnt offerings(HL) and fellowship offerings to make atonement(HM) for the people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 All the people of the land will be required to give this special offering to the prince in Israel. 17 It will be the duty of the prince to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings and drink offerings at the festivals, the New Moons(HN) and the Sabbaths(HO)—at all the appointed festivals of Israel. He will provide the sin offerings,[bz] grain offerings, burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to make atonement for the Israelites.(HP)

18 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In the first month(HQ) on the first day you are to take a young bull without defect(HR) and purify the sanctuary.(HS) 19 The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the temple, on the four corners of the upper ledge(HT) of the altar(HU) and on the gateposts of the inner court. 20 You are to do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who sins unintentionally(HV) or through ignorance; so you are to make atonement for the temple.

21 “‘In the first month on the fourteenth day you are to observe the Passover,(HW) a festival lasting seven days, during which you shall eat bread made without yeast. 22 On that day the prince is to provide a bull as a sin offering for himself and for all the people of the land.(HX) 23 Every day during the seven days of the festival he is to provide seven bulls and seven rams(HY) without defect as a burnt offering to the Lord, and a male goat for a sin offering.(HZ) 24 He is to provide as a grain offering(IA) an ephah for each bull and an ephah for each ram, along with a hin[ca] of olive oil for each ephah.(IB)

25 “‘During the seven days of the festival,(IC) which begins in the seventh month on the fifteenth day, he is to make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings and oil.(ID)

46 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The gate of the inner court(IE) facing east(IF) is to be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day and on the day of the New Moon(IG) it is to be opened. The prince is to enter from the outside through the portico(IH) of the gateway and stand by the gatepost. The priests are to sacrifice his burnt offering(II) and his fellowship offerings. He is to bow down in worship at the threshold of the gateway and then go out, but the gate will not be shut until evening.(IJ) On the Sabbaths(IK) and New Moons the people of the land are to worship in the presence of the Lord at the entrance of that gateway.(IL) The burnt offering the prince brings to the Lord on the Sabbath day is to be six male lambs and a ram, all without defect. The grain offering given with the ram is to be an ephah,[cb] and the grain offering with the lambs is to be as much as he pleases, along with a hin[cc] of olive oil for each ephah.(IM) On the day of the New Moon(IN) he is to offer a young bull, six lambs and a ram, all without defect.(IO) He is to provide as a grain offering one ephah with the bull, one ephah with the ram, and with the lambs as much as he wants to give, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(IP) When the prince enters, he is to go in through the portico(IQ) of the gateway, and he is to come out the same way.(IR)

“‘When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed festivals,(IS) whoever enters by the north gate to worship is to go out the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate is to go out the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which they entered, but each is to go out the opposite gate. 10 The prince is to be among them, going in when they go in and going out when they go out.(IT) 11 At the feasts and the appointed festivals, the grain offering is to be an ephah with a bull, an ephah with a ram, and with the lambs as much as he pleases, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(IU)

12 “‘When the prince provides(IV) a freewill offering(IW) to the Lord—whether a burnt offering or fellowship offerings—the gate facing east is to be opened for him. He shall offer his burnt offering or his fellowship offerings as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out, the gate will be shut.(IX)

13 “‘Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning(IY) you shall provide it.(IZ) 14 You are also to provide with it morning by morning a grain offering, consisting of a sixth of an ephah[cd] with a third of a hin[ce] of oil(JA) to moisten the flour. The presenting of this grain offering to the Lord is a lasting ordinance.(JB) 15 So the lamb and the grain offering and the oil shall be provided morning by morning for a regular(JC) burnt offering.(JD)

16 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: If the prince makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his sons, it will also belong to his descendants; it is to be their property by inheritance.(JE) 17 If, however, he makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, the servant may keep it until the year of freedom;(JF) then it will revert to the prince. His inheritance belongs to his sons only; it is theirs. 18 The prince must not take(JG) any of the inheritance(JH) of the people, driving them off their property. He is to give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that not one of my people will be separated from their property.’”

19 Then the man brought me through the entrance(JI) at the side of the gate to the sacred rooms facing north,(JJ) which belonged to the priests, and showed me a place at the western end. 20 He said to me, “This is the place where the priests are to cook the guilt offering and the sin offering[cf] and bake the grain offering, to avoid bringing them into the outer court and consecrating(JK) the people.”(JL)

21 He then brought me to the outer court and led me around to its four corners, and I saw in each corner another court. 22 In the four corners of the outer court were enclosed[cg] courts, forty cubits long and thirty cubits wide;[ch] each of the courts in the four corners was the same size. 23 Around the inside of each of the four courts was a ledge of stone, with places for fire built all around under the ledge. 24 He said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who minister at the temple are to cook the sacrifices of the people.”

The River From the Temple

47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water(JM) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.(JN) He then brought me out through the north gate(JO) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

As the man went eastward with a measuring line(JP) in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits[ci] and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river(JQ) that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.(JR) He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.(JS) He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,[cj](JT) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.(JU) Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.(JV) 10 Fishermen(JW) will stand along the shore; from En Gedi(JX) to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets.(JY) The fish will be of many kinds(JZ)—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.(KA) 11 But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.(KB) 12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.(KC) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit(KD) fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary(KE) flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.(KF)

The Boundaries of the Land

13 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries(KG) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.(KH) 14 You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.(KI)

15 “This is to be the boundary of the land:(KJ)

“On the north side it will run from the Mediterranean Sea(KK) by the Hethlon road(KL) past Lebo Hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah[ck](KM) and Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath),(KN) as far as Hazer Hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary will extend from the sea to Hazar Enan,[cl] along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary.(KO)

18 “On the east side the boundary will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, to the Dead Sea and as far as Tamar.[cm] This will be the eastern boundary.(KP)

19 “On the south side it will run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah Kadesh,(KQ) then along the Wadi of Egypt(KR) to the Mediterranean Sea.(KS) This will be the southern boundary.

20 “On the west side, the Mediterranean Sea will be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo Hamath.(KT) This will be the western boundary.(KU)

21 “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance(KV) for yourselves and for the foreigners(KW) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.(KX) 23 In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(KY)

The Division of the Land

48 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan(KZ) will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road(LA) to Lebo Hamath;(LB) Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.

“Asher(LC) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.

“Naphtali(LD) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.

“Manasseh(LE) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.

“Ephraim(LF) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh(LG) from east to west.(LH)

“Reuben(LI) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.

“Judah(LJ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.

“Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits[cn] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it.(LK)

“The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[co] wide.(LL) 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord.(LM) 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites,(LN) who were faithful in serving me(LO) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray.(LP) 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.

13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits.(LQ) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord.(LR)

15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits[cp] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits,[cq] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits.(LS) 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits[cr] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.(LT) 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.

21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them.(LU) 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin(LV) will have one portion; it will extend from the east side to the west side.

24 “Simeon(LW) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Benjamin from east to west.

25 “Issachar(LX) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Simeon from east to west.
