The Inner Temple

41 Then he (A)brought me to the (B)sanctuary, and he measured the (C)side pillars: six [a]cubits wide on each side was the width of the [b]side pillar. The width of the entrance was ten cubits and the [c]sides of the entrance were five cubits on each side. He also measured [d]the length of the sanctuary, (D)forty cubits, and the width, (E)twenty cubits. Then he went [e](F)inside and measured each (G)side pillar of the doorway, two cubits, and the doorway, six cubits high; and the width of the doorway, seven cubits. And he measured its length, (H)twenty cubits, and the width, twenty cubits, before the (I)sanctuary; and he said to me, “This is the (J)Most Holy Place.”

Then he measured the wall of the [f]temple, six cubits; and the width of the (K)side chambers, four cubits, all around the house on every side. (L)The side chambers were in three stories, [g]one above another, and [h]thirty in each story; and [i]the side chambers (M)extended to the wall which stood on [j]their inward side all around, so that they could be attached, but not be attached to the wall of the temple itself. And the side chambers surrounding the temple were wider at each successive story. Because the (N)structure surrounding the temple went upward by stages on all sides of the temple, for that reason the width of the temple increased as it went higher; and so one went up from the lowest story to the highest by way of the [k]second story. I saw also that the house had a raised [l]platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers were a full [m]rod of (O)six [n]long cubits in height. The [o]thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits. But the (P)free space between the side chambers belonging to the temple 10 and the outer (Q)chambers was twenty cubits in width around the temple on every side. 11 The [p]doorways of the side [q]chambers toward the (R)free space consisted of one doorway toward the north, and another doorway toward the south; and the width of the (S)free space was five cubits all around.

12 The (T)building that was in front of the (U)separate area at the side toward the west was seventy cubits wide; and the wall of the building was five cubits [r]thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.

13 Then he measured the temple, a (V)hundred cubits long; the (W)separate area with the (X)building and its walls were also a (Y)hundred cubits long. 14 Also the width of the front of the temple and that of the separate [s]areas along the east side totaled a hundred cubits.

15 And he measured the length of the (Z)building [t]along the front of the (AA)separate area behind it, with a [u](AB)gallery on each side, a hundred cubits; he also measured the inner sanctuary and the porches of the courtyard. 16 The (AC)thresholds, the [v](AD)latticed windows, and the [w](AE)galleries all around their (AF)three stories, opposite the threshold, were (AG)paneled with wood all around, and from the ground to the windows (but the windows were covered), 17 over the entrance, and to the inner house, and on the outside, and on all the wall all around inside and outside, by measurement. 18 It was [x]carved with (AH)cherubim and (AI)palm trees; and a palm tree was between cherub and cherub, and every cherub had two faces: 19 a (AJ)human face toward the palm tree on one side and a young (AK)lion’s face toward the palm tree on the other side; they were [y]carved on all the house all around. 20 From the ground to above the entrance (AL)cherubim and (AM)palm trees were [z]carved, as well as on the wall of the sanctuary.

21 The (AN)doorposts of the (AO)sanctuary were square; as for the front of the inner [aa]sanctuary, the appearance of one doorpost was like that of the other. 22 The (AP)altar was of wood, three cubits high, and its length two cubits; its corners, its [ab]base, and its [ac]sides were of wood. And he said to me, “This is the (AQ)table that is before the Lord.” 23 The (AR)sanctuary and the inner [ad](AS)sanctuary each had a double (AT)door. 24 Each of the doors had two leaves, two [ae](AU)swinging leaves; two leaves for one door and two leaves for the other. 25 Also there were [af]carved on them, on the doors of the main room, (AV)cherubim and (AW)palm trees like those [ag]carved on the walls; and there was a [ah](AX)threshold of wood on the front of the porch outside. 26 And there were [ai](AY)latticed windows and (AZ)palm trees on one side and on the other, on the sides of the (BA)porch; the same were on the (BB)side chambers of the house and the [aj]thresholds.

Chambers of the Temple

42 Then he (BC)brought me out into the (BD)outer courtyard, the way (BE)toward the north; and he brought me to the (BF)chamber which was opposite the (BG)separate area and opposite the (BH)building toward the north. Along the length, which was a (BI)hundred [ak]cubits, was the north door; the width was fifty cubits. Opposite the (BJ)twenty cubits which belonged to the inner courtyard, and opposite the (BK)stone pavement which belonged to the outer courtyard, was [al](BL)gallery corresponding to [am]gallery in three stories. In front of the (BM)chambers was an inner passage ten cubits wide, a way of one hundred cubits; and their openings were on the north. Now the upper chambers were [an]smaller because the [ao](BN)galleries took more space away from them than from the lower and middle ones in the building. For they were in (BO)three stories and had no pillars like the pillars of the courtyards; for that reason the upper chambers were [ap]set back from the ground upward, more than the lower and middle ones. As for the (BP)outer wall by the side of the chambers, toward the outer courtyard facing the chambers, its length was fifty cubits. For the length of the chambers which were in the outer courtyard was fifty cubits; and behold, the length of those facing the main room was a (BQ)hundred cubits. And below these chambers was the (BR)entrance on the east side, as one enters them from the outer courtyard.

10 In the [aq]thickness of the (BS)wall of the courtyard toward the east, facing the (BT)separate area and facing the building, there were (BU)chambers. 11 And the (BV)way in front of them was like the appearance of the chambers which were on the north; according to their length, so was their width, and all their exits were according to their building plans and openings. 12 Corresponding to the openings of the chambers which were toward the south was an opening at the head of the way, the way in front of the (BW)wall toward the east, as one enters them.

13 Then he said to me, “The north chambers and the south chambers, which are opposite the (BX)separate area, they are the (BY)holy chambers where the priests who are (BZ)near to the Lord shall eat the (CA)most holy things. There they shall set the most holy things, the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering; for the place is holy. 14 When the priests enter, they shall not go out into the outer courtyard from the sanctuary [ar]without (CB)laying their (CC)garments there in which they minister, for they are holy. They shall put on other garments; then they shall approach that which is for the people.”

15 Now when he had finished measuring the inner house, he brought me out by way of the (CD)gate which faced east, and measured it all around. 16 He measured on the east side with the measuring [as]rod: five hundred rods by the (CE)measuring rod. 17 He measured on the north side: five hundred rods by the measuring rod. 18 On the south side he measured five hundred rods with the measuring rod. 19 He turned to the west side and measured five hundred rods with the measuring rod. 20 He measured it [at]on the four sides; it had a (CF)wall all around, the (CG)length five hundred rods and the (CH)width five hundred, to (CI)divide between the holy and the [au]common.

Vision of the Glory of God Filling the Temple

43 Then he led me to the (CJ)gate, the gate facing east; and behold, the (CK)glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the (CL)east. And His (CM)voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth (CN)shone from His glory. And it was like the appearance of the vision which I saw, like the (CO)vision which I saw when [av]He came to (CP)destroy the city. And the visions were like the vision which I saw by the (CQ)river Chebar; and I (CR)fell on my face. And the glory of the Lord entered the house by way of the gate facing (CS)east. And the (CT)Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner courtyard; and behold, the (CU)glory of the Lord filled the house.

Then I heard Him speaking to me from the house, while a (CV)man was standing beside me. And He said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of My (CW)throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will (CX)dwell among the sons of Israel forever. And the house of Israel will not again defile My holy name, neither they nor their kings, by their prostitution and by the [aw](CY)corpses of their kings [ax]when they die, by putting their threshold by My threshold, and their door post beside My door post, with only the wall between Me and them. And they have (CZ)defiled My holy name by their abominations which they have committed. So I have consumed them in My anger. Now let them (DA)remove their prostitution and the [ay]corpses of their kings far from Me, and I will (DB)dwell among them forever.

10 “As for you, son of man, (DC)inform the house of Israel of the [az]temple, so that they will be (DD)ashamed of their wrongdoings; and have them measure the [ba](DE)plan. 11 And if they are ashamed of everything that they have done, make known to them the plan of the house, its layout, its (DF)exits, its entrances, all its plans, all its [bb]statutes, and all its laws. And write it (DG)in their sight, so that they may observe its entire plan and all its statutes and (DH)execute them. 12 This is the [bc]law of the house: its entire [bd]area on the top of the (DI)mountain all around shall be most holy. Behold, this is the [be]law of the house.

The Altar of Sacrifice

13 “And these are the measurements of the (DJ)altar by cubits (the (DK)cubit being a [bf]cubit and a hand width): the [bg]base shall be a cubit and the width a cubit, and its border on its edge all around one span; and this shall be the height of the [bh]base of the altar. 14 And from the base on the ground to the lower (DL)ledge shall be two cubits, and the width one cubit; and from the smaller ledge to the larger ledge shall be four cubits, and the width [bi]one cubit. 15 The [bj]altar hearth shall be four cubits; and from the [bk]altar hearth shall extend upward four (DM)horns. 16 Now the [bl]altar hearth shall be twelve cubits long by twelve wide, (DN)square in its four sides. 17 And the ledge shall be fourteen cubits long by fourteen wide in its four sides, the border around it shall be half a cubit, and its base shall be a cubit all around; and its (DO)steps shall [bm](DP)face east.”

The Offerings

18 And He said to me, “(DQ)Son of man, this is what the Lord [bn]God says: ‘These are the statutes for the altar on the day it is built, to offer (DR)burnt offerings on it and to (DS)sprinkle blood on it. 19 You shall give to the Levitical priests who are from the descendants of (DT)Zadok, who come (DU)near to Me to serve Me,’ declares the Lord God, ‘a [bo](DV)bull as a (DW)sin offering. 20 And you shall take some of its blood and put it on its four (DX)horns and on the four corners of the (DY)ledge, and on the border all around; so you shall (DZ)cleanse it and make atonement for it. 21 You shall also take the bull as the sin offering, and it shall be (EA)burned in the appointed place of the house, outside the sanctuary.

22 ‘And on the second day you shall offer a (EB)male goat without blemish as a sin offering, and they shall (EC)cleanse the altar from sin as they cleansed it with the bull. 23 When you have finished cleansing it, you shall offer a [bp](ED)bull without blemish and a (EE)ram without blemish from the flock. 24 You shall offer them before the Lord, and the priests shall throw (EF)salt on them, and they shall offer them up as a burnt offering to the Lord. 25 (EG)For seven days you shall prepare a goat as a sin offering daily; also a [bq]bull and a ram from the flock, both without blemish, shall be prepared. 26 For seven days they shall make atonement for the altar and purify it; so shall they [br]consecrate it. 27 When they have completed the days, it shall be that on the (EH)eighth day and onward, the priests shall [bs]offer your burnt offerings on the altar, and your (EI)peace offerings; and I will (EJ)accept you,’ declares the Lord God.”

Gate for the Prince

44 Then He brought me back by way of the (EK)outer gate of the sanctuary, which faces east; and it was shut. And the Lord said to me, “This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the (EL)Lord God of Israel has entered by it; therefore it shall be shut. As for the (EM)prince, he shall sit in it as prince to (EN)eat bread before the Lord; he shall (EO)enter by way of the (EP)porch of the gate and shall go out [bt]by the same way.”

Then He brought me by way of the (EQ)north gate to the front of the house; and I looked, and behold, the (ER)glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord, and I (ES)fell on my face. And the Lord said to me, “Son of man, [bu](ET)pay attention, see with your eyes and hear with your ears everything that I say to you concerning all the (EU)statutes of the house of the Lord and all its laws; and [bv]pay attention to the entrance of the house, with all the exits of the sanctuary. You shall say to the [bw](EV)rebellious ones, to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord [bx]God says: “(EW)Enough of all your abominations, house of Israel, when you brought in (EX)foreigners, (EY)uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in My sanctuary to profane it, My house, when you (EZ)offered My food, the fat, and the blood and they (FA)broke My covenant—this in addition to all your abominations. And you have not [by](FB)taken responsibility for My holy things yourselves, but you have appointed foreigners [bz]to take responsibility for My sanctuary.”

‘This is what the Lord God says: “(FC)No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, of all the foreigners who are among the sons of Israel, shall enter My sanctuary. 10 But the Levites who went far from Me when Israel went astray, who (FD)went astray from Me [ca]following their idols, shall (FE)suffer the punishment for their wrongdoing. 11 Yet they shall be (FF)ministers in My sanctuary, having (FG)oversight at the gates of the house and (FH)ministering in the house; they shall (FI)slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and they shall (FJ)stand before them to minister to them. 12 Since they ministered to them (FK)before their idols and became a (FL)stumbling block of wrongdoing to the house of Israel, for that reason I have [cb](FM)sworn against them,” declares the Lord God, “that they shall (FN)suffer the punishment for their wrongdoing. 13 And they shall (FO)not approach Me to serve as priests for Me, nor approach any of My holy things, to the things that are most holy; but they will (FP)bear their shame and their abominations which they have committed. 14 Nevertheless I will [cc]appoint them [cd]to (FQ)take responsibility for the house, of all its service and of everything that shall be done in it.

Ordinances for the Levites

15 “But the (FR)Levitical priests, the sons of (FS)Zadok, who [ce](FT)took responsibility for My sanctuary when the sons of Israel (FU)went astray from Me, shall come near to Me to serve Me; and they shall (FV)stand before Me to offer Me the (FW)fat and the blood,” declares the Lord God. 16 “They shall (FX)enter My sanctuary; they shall come near to My (FY)table to serve Me and [cf]assume the responsibility I give them. 17 And it shall be that when they enter at the gates of the inner courtyard, they shall be clothed with (FZ)linen garments; and wool shall not [cg]be worn by them while they are ministering in the gates of the inner courtyard or in the house. 18 Linen (GA)turbans shall be on their heads and (GB)linen undergarments shall be around their waists; they shall not put on anything that makes them sweat. 19 And when they go out into the outer courtyard, into the outer courtyard to the people, they shall (GC)take off their garments in which they have been ministering and lay them in the holy chambers; then they shall put on other garments, so that they will (GD)not transfer holiness to the people with their garments. 20 Also they shall (GE)not shave their heads, yet they shall not (GF)let their locks [ch]grow long; they shall only trim the hair of their heads. 21 (GG)Nor shall any of the priests drink wine when they enter the inner courtyard. 22 And they shall not [ci]marry a widow or a (GH)divorced woman, but shall (GI)take virgins from the descendants of the house of Israel, or a widow who is the widow of a priest. 23 Moreover, they shall teach My people the (GJ)difference between the holy and the [cj]common, and teach them to distinguish between the unclean and the clean. 24 In a dispute (GK)they shall take their stand to judge; they shall judge it according to My ordinances. They shall also keep My laws and My statutes in all My (GL)appointed feasts, and (GM)sanctify My Sabbaths. 25 [ck](GN)They shall not go to a dead person to defile themselves; however, for father, for mother, for son, for daughter, for brother, or for a sister who has not had a husband, they may defile themselves. 26 And after he is (GO)cleansed, seven days [cl]shall elapse for him. 27 On the day that he goes into the sanctuary, to the (GP)inner courtyard to minister in the sanctuary, he shall offer his (GQ)sin offering,” declares the Lord God.

28 “And it shall be regarding an inheritance for them, that (GR)I am their inheritance; and you shall give them no property in Israel—I am their property. 29 They shall (GS)eat the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering; and everything (GT)banned from secular use in Israel shall be theirs. 30 And the first of all the (GU)first fruits of every kind and every [cm]contribution of every kind, from all your [cn]contributions, shall be for the priests; you shall also give to the priest the (GV)first of your [co]dough, to make a (GW)blessing rest on your house. 31 The priests shall not eat any bird or animal that has (GX)died a natural death or has been torn to pieces by animals.

The Lords Portion of the Land

45 “Now when you (GY)divide the land by lot for inheritance, you shall offer [cp]an (GZ)allotment to the Lord, a (HA)holy portion of the land; the length shall be a length of twenty-five thousand [cq](HB)cubits, and the width shall be [cr]twenty thousand. It shall be holy within its entire surrounding boundary. Out of this there shall be for the sanctuary a square encompassing (HC)five hundred by five hundred cubits, and fifty cubits for its [cs](HD)open space round about. From this [ct]area you shall measure a length of twenty-five thousand cubits and a width of ten thousand cubits; and in it shall be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. It shall be the holy portion of the land; it shall be for the (HE)priests, the ministers of the sanctuary, who (HF)come near to serve the Lord, and it shall be a place for their houses and a holy place for the sanctuary. An area (HG)twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width shall be for the Levites, the ministers of the house, and for their possession [cu]cities in which to live.

“And you shall give the (HH)city possession of an area five thousand cubits wide and twenty-five thousand cubits long, alongside the [cv]allotment of the holy portion; it shall be for the entire house of Israel.

Portion for the Prince

“And the (HI)prince shall have land on either side of the holy [cw]allotment and the [cx]property of the city, adjacent to the holy [cy]allotment and the [cz]property of the city, on the west side toward the west and on the east side toward the east, and in length comparable to one of the portions, from the west border to the east border. This shall be his land as a possession in Israel; so My princes shall no longer (HJ)oppress My people, but they shall give the rest of the land to the house of Israel (HK)according to their tribes.”

‘This is what the Lord [da]God says: “(HL)Enough, you princes of Israel; get rid of (HM)violence and destruction, and (HN)practice justice and righteousness. Revoke your (HO)evictions of My people,” declares the Lord God.

10 “You shall have (HP)accurate balances, an accurate [db](HQ)ephah, and an accurate [dc](HR)bath. 11 The ephah and the bath shall be [dd]the same quantity, so that the bath will contain a tenth of a (HS)homer, and the ephah a tenth of a [de]homer; [df]their standard shall be according to the homer. 12 And the (HT)shekel shall be twenty (HU)gerahs; twenty shekels, twenty-five shekels, and fifteen shekels shall be your mina.

13 “This is the offering that you shall offer: a sixth of an ephah from each homer of wheat; a sixth of an ephah from each homer of barley; 14 and the prescribed portion of oil (namely, the bath of oil), a tenth of a bath from each kor (which is ten baths or a homer, for ten baths are a homer); 15 and one sheep from each flock of two hundred from the watering places of Israel—for a (HV)grain offering, for a burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to (HW)make atonement for them,” declares the Lord God. 16 (HX)All the people of the land shall [dg]give to this offering for the (HY)prince in Israel. 17 And it shall be the (HZ)prince’s part to provide the (IA)burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the drink offerings, at the (IB)feasts, on the (IC)new moons, and on the Sabbaths, at all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel; he shall provide the sin offering, the grain offering, the burnt offering, and the (ID)peace offerings, to make atonement for the house of Israel.”

18 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “In the (IE)first month, on the first of the month, you shall take a [dh]bull (IF)without blemish and (IG)cleanse the sanctuary from sin. 19 And the priest shall take some of the blood from the sin offering and put it on the door posts of the house, on the (IH)four corners of the (II)ledge of the altar, and on the posts of the gate of the inner courtyard. 20 And you shall do this on the seventh day of the month for everyone who does (IJ)wrong inadvertently or is naive; so you shall make (IK)atonement for the house.

21 “In the (IL)first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall have the (IM)Passover, a feast of seven days; unleavened bread shall be eaten. 22 On that day the prince shall provide for himself and all the people of the land a (IN)bull as a sin offering. 23 And during the (IO)seven days of the feast he shall provide as a (IP)burnt offering to the Lord (IQ)seven bulls and seven rams without blemish on every day of the seven days, and a male goat daily as a sin offering. 24 And he shall provide as a (IR)grain offering an [di]ephah [dj]with a bull, an [dk]ephah [dl]with a ram, and a [dm]hin of oil [dn]with an ephah. 25 In the (IS)seventh month, on the fifteenth day of the month, at the feast, he shall provide like these, seven days [do]for the sin offering, the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the oil.”

The Prince’s Offerings

46 ‘This is what the Lord [dp]God says: “The (IT)gate of the (IU)inner courtyard facing east shall be (IV)shut for the six (IW)working days; but it shall be opened on the (IX)Sabbath day and opened on the day of the (IY)new moon. The (IZ)prince shall enter by way of the porch of the gate from outside and stand by the (JA)post of the gate. Then the priests shall provide his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the threshold of the gate and then go out; but the gate shall not be (JB)shut until the evening. The (JC)people of the land shall also worship at the doorway of that gate before the Lord on the Sabbaths and on the (JD)new moons. The (JE)burnt offering which the prince shall offer to the Lord on the Sabbath day shall be (JF)six lambs without blemish and a ram without blemish; and the (JG)grain offering shall be an [dq]ephah [dr]with the ram, and the grain offering [ds]with the lambs [dt]as much as he is (JH)able to give, and a [du]hin of oil [dv]with an ephah. On the day of the (JI)new moon he shall offer a [dw]bull without blemish, and six lambs and a ram, which shall be without blemish. And he shall provide a (JJ)grain offering, an ephah [dx]with the bull and an ephah [dy]with the ram, and [dz]with the lambs as [ea]much as he is (JK)able, and a hin of oil [eb]with an ephah. When the (JL)prince enters, he shall go in by way of the porch of the gate, and go out by [ec]the same way. But when the people of the land come (JM)before the Lord at the appointed feasts, one who enters by way of the north gate to worship shall go out by way of the south gate. And one who enters by way of the south gate shall go out by way of the north gate. [ed]No one shall return by way of the gate by which he entered, but shall go straight out. 10 And when they go in, the prince shall go in (JN)among them; and when they go out, [ee]he shall go out.

11 “At the (JO)festivals and the appointed feasts, the (JP)grain offering shall be an ephah [ef]with a bull and an ephah [eg]with a ram, and [eh]with the lambs as [ei]much as one is able to give, and a hin of oil [ej]with an ephah. 12 And when the prince provides a (JQ)[ek]voluntary offering, a burnt offering, or peace offerings as a [el]voluntary offering to the Lord, the gate facing east shall be (JR)opened for him. And he shall provide his burnt offering and his peace offerings as he does on the (JS)Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and the gate shall be shut after he goes out.

13 “And you shall provide a (JT)lamb a year old without blemish as a burnt offering to the Lord daily; (JU)morning by morning you shall provide it. 14 You shall also provide a grain offering with it morning by morning, a (JV)sixth of an ephah and a third of a hin of oil to moisten the fine flour, a grain offering to the Lord continually by [em]a permanent ordinance. 15 So they shall provide the lamb, the grain offering, and the oil, morning by morning, as a (JW)continual burnt offering.”

16 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “If the prince gives a (JX)gift from his inheritance to any of his sons, it shall belong to his sons; it is their possession by inheritance. 17 But if he gives a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his until the (JY)year of [en]release; then it shall return to the prince. His inheritance shall be only his sons’; it shall belong to them. 18 And the prince shall (JZ)not take from the people’s inheritance, [eo](KA)depriving them of their property; he shall give his sons inheritance from his own property, so that My people will not be scattered, anyone from his property.”’”

The Boiling Places

19 Then he brought me through the (KB)entrance, which was at the side of the gate, into the holy chambers for the priests, which faced north; and behold, a place was there at the extreme rear toward the west. 20 And he said to me, “This is the place where the priests shall boil the (KC)guilt offering and the sin offering, and where they shall (KD)bake the grain offering, so that they do not bring them out into the outer courtyard [ep]and transfer holiness to the people.”

21 Then he brought me out into the outer courtyard and led me across to the four corners of the courtyard; and behold, in every corner of the courtyard there was a small courtyard. 22 In the four corners of the courtyard there were enclosed courtyards, forty [eq]cubits long and thirty wide; these four in the corners were [er]the same size. 23 And there was a row of masonry all around in them, around the four of them, and cooking hearths were made under the rows all around. 24 Then he said to me, “These are the cooking [es]places where the ministers of the house shall cook the sacrifices of the people.”

Water from the Temple

47 Then he brought me back to the (KE)door of the house; and behold, (KF)water was flowing from under the threshold of the house toward the east, for the house faced east. And the water was flowing down from under, from the right side of the house, from south of the altar. And he brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around [et]on the outside to the outer gate, by the way facing east. And behold, water was spurting out from the south side.

When the man went out toward the east with a line in his hand, he measured a thousand [eu]cubits, and he led me through the water, water reaching the ankles. Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the knees. Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the [ev]hips. Again he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not [ew]wade across, because the water had risen, enough water to swim in, a (KG)river that could not be crossed by wading. And he said to me, “Son of man, have you (KH)seen this?” Then he brought me [ex]back to the bank of the river. Now when I had returned, behold, on the bank of the river there were very many (KI)trees on the one side and on the other. Then he said to me, “These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the (KJ)Arabah; then they go toward the [ey]sea, being made to flow into the (KK)sea, and the waters of the sea become [ez]fresh. And it will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the [fa]river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others [fb]become fresh; so (KL)everything will live where the river goes. 10 And it will come about that (KM)fishermen will stand beside it; from (KN)Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the (KO)spreading of nets. Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the (KP)Great Sea, (KQ)very many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not become [fc]fresh; they will be [fd]left for (KR)salt. 12 And (KS)by the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all kinds of (KT)trees for food. Their (KU)leaves will not wither and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their (KV)leaves for healing.”

Boundaries and Division of the Land

13 This is what the Lord [fe]God says: “This shall be the (KW)boundary by which you shall divide the land for an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel; Joseph shall have two (KX)portions. 14 And you shall divide it for an inheritance, each one [ff]equally with the other; for I [fg](KY)swore to give it to your forefathers, and this land shall fall to you [fh]as an inheritance.

15 “And this shall be the boundary of the land: on the (KZ)north side, from the Great Sea by the way of Hethlon, to the entrance of [fi](LA)Zedad; 16 [fj](LB)Hamath, Berothah, Sibraim, which is between the border of (LC)Damascus and the border of Hamath; Hazer-hatticon, which is by the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary shall [fk]extend from the sea to (LD)Hazar-enan at the border of Damascus, and on the north toward the north is the border of Hamath. This is the north side.

18 “The (LE)east side, from between Hauran, Damascus, (LF)Gilead, and the land of Israel, shall be the (LG)Jordan; from the north border to the eastern sea you shall measure. This is the east side.

19 “The (LH)south side toward the south shall extend from (LI)Tamar as far as the waters of (LJ)Meribath-kadesh, to the (LK)brook of Egypt and to the (LL)Great Sea. This is the south side toward the south.

20 “And the (LM)west side shall be the Great Sea, from the south border to a point opposite [fl](LN)Lebo-hamath. This is the west side.

21 “So you shall divide this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You shall divide it by (LO)lot for an inheritance among yourselves and among the (LP)strangers who stay in your midst, who bring forth sons in your midst. And they shall be to you as the native-born among the sons of Israel; they shall be allotted an (LQ)inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel. 23 And in the tribe with which the stranger resides, there you shall give him his inheritance,” declares the Lord God.

Division of the Land

48 “Now (LR)these are the names of the tribes: from the northern extremity, [fm]beside the way of Hethlon to [fn]Lebo-hamath, as far as Hazar-enan at the border of Damascus, toward the north [fo]beside Hamath, [fp]running from east to west, (LS)Dan, one portion. Beside the border of Dan, from the east side to the west side, (LT)Asher, one portion. Beside the border of Asher, from the east side to the west side, (LU)Naphtali, one portion. Beside the border of Naphtali, from the east side to the west side, (LV)Manasseh, one portion. Beside the border of Manasseh, from the east side to the west side, (LW)Ephraim, one portion. Beside the border of Ephraim, from the east side to the west side, (LX)Reuben, one portion. Beside the border of Reuben, from the east side to the west side, (LY)Judah, one portion.

“And beside the border of Judah, from the east side to the west side, shall be the [fq]allotment which you shall [fr]set apart, twenty-five thousand [fs]cubits in width, and in length like one of the portions, from the east side to the west side; and the (LZ)sanctuary shall be in the middle of it. The allotment that you shall set apart to the Lord shall be twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width.

Portion for the Priests

10 The holy allotment shall be for these, namely for the (MA)priests, toward the north twenty-five thousand cubits in length, toward the west ten thousand in width, toward the east ten thousand in width, and toward the south twenty-five thousand in length; and the sanctuary of the Lord shall be in its midst. 11 It shall be for the priests who are sanctified of the (MB)sons of Zadok, who have [ft]taken the responsibility I gave them, who did not go astray when the sons of Israel went astray as the (MC)Levites went astray. 12 It shall be an allotment to them from the allotment of the land, a most holy reserve, by the border of the Levites. 13 And alongside the border of the priests, the Levites shall have twenty-five thousand cubits in length and ten thousand in width. The entire length shall be twenty-five thousand cubits and the width ten thousand. 14 Moreover, they (MD)shall not sell or exchange any of it, or allow this [fu]choice portion of land to pass to others; for it is holy to the Lord.

15 “The remainder, five thousand cubits in width and twenty-five thousand [fv]in length, shall be for (ME)common use for the city, for homes and for [fw]open spaces; and the city shall be in its midst. 16 And these shall be its measurements: the north side, 4,500 cubits, the south side (MF)4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side, 4,500 cubits. 17 The city shall have [fx]open spaces: on the north 250 cubits, on the south 250 cubits, on the east 250 cubits, and on the west 250 cubits. 18 The remainder of the length alongside the holy allotment shall be ten thousand cubits toward the east and ten thousand toward the west; and it shall be [fy]alongside the holy allotment. And its produce shall be food for the workers of the city. 19 And the workers of the city, out of all the tribes of Israel, shall cultivate it. 20 The whole allotment shall be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand cubits; you shall [fz]set apart the holy allotment, a [ga]square, with the [gb]property of the city.

Portion for the Prince

21 “The (MG)remainder shall be for the prince, on the one side and on the other of the holy allotment and of the [gc]property of the city; in front of the twenty-five thousand cubits of the allotment toward the east border and westward in front of the twenty-five thousand toward the west border, alongside the portions, it shall be for the prince. And the holy allotment and the sanctuary of the house shall be in the middle of it. 22 And exclusive of the [gd]property of the Levites and the [ge]property of the city, which are in the middle of that which belongs to the prince, everything between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin shall belong to the prince.

Portion for Other Tribes

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west side, (MH)Benjamin, one portion. 24 Beside the border of Benjamin, from the east side to the west side, (MI)Simeon, one portion. 25 Beside the border of Simeon, from the east side to the west side, (MJ)Issachar, one portion. 26 Beside the border of Issachar, from the east side to the west side, (MK)Zebulun, one portion. 27 Beside the border of Zebulun, from the east side to the west side, (ML)Gad, one portion. 28 And beside the border of Gad, at the south side toward the south, the border shall be from (MM)Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, to the brook of Egypt, to the (MN)Great Sea. 29 This is the (MO)land which you shall divide by lot to the tribes of Israel for an inheritance, and these are their several portions,” declares the Lord [gf]God.

The City Gates

30 “Now these are the exits of the city: on the (MP)north side, 4,500 cubits by measurement, 31 [gg]shall be the gates of the city, [gh](MQ)named for the tribes of Israel, three gates toward the north: the gate of Reuben, one; the gate of Judah, one; and the gate of Levi, one. 32 On the east side, 4,500 cubits, [gi]shall be three gates: the gate of Joseph, one; the gate of Benjamin, one; and the gate of Dan, one. 33 On the south side, 4,500 cubits by measurement, [gj]shall be three gates: the gate of Simeon, one; the gate of Issachar, one; and the gate of Zebulun, one. 34 On the west side, 4,500 cubits, shall be three gates: the gate of Gad, one; the gate of Asher, one; and the gate of Naphtali, one. 35 The city shall be eighteen thousand cubits all around; and the (MR)name of the city from that day shall be, ‘[gk]The (MS)Lord is there.’”

41 Then the man brought me to the main hall(A) and measured the jambs; the width of the jambs was six cubits[a] on each side.[b] The entrance was ten cubits[c] wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were five cubits[d] wide. He also measured the main hall; it was forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.[e](B)

Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance; each was two cubits[f] wide. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were seven cubits[g] wide. And he measured the length of the inner sanctuary; it was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits across the end of the main hall.(C) He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.(D)

Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was six cubits thick, and each side room around the temple was four cubits[h] wide. The side rooms were on three levels, one above another, thirty(E) on each level. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports were not inserted into the wall of the temple.(F) The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway(G) went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.

I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the length of the rod, six long cubits. The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick. The open area between the side rooms of the temple 10 and the priests’ rooms was twenty cubits wide all around the temple. 11 There were entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one on the north and another on the south; and the base adjoining the open area was five cubits wide all around.

12 The building facing the temple courtyard on the west side was seventy cubits[i] wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.[j]

13 Then he measured the temple; it was a hundred cubits[k] long, and the temple courtyard and the building with its walls were also a hundred cubits long. 14 The width of the temple courtyard on the east, including the front of the temple, was a hundred cubits.(H)

15 Then he measured the length of the building facing the courtyard at the rear of the temple, including its galleries(I) on each side; it was a hundred cubits.

The main hall, the inner sanctuary and the portico facing the court, 16 as well as the thresholds and the narrow windows(J) and galleries around the three of them—everything beyond and including the threshold was covered with wood. The floor, the wall up to the windows, and the windows were covered.(K) 17 In the space above the outside of the entrance to the inner sanctuary and on the walls at regular intervals all around the inner and outer sanctuary 18 were carved(L) cherubim(M) and palm trees.(N) Palm trees alternated with cherubim. Each cherub had two faces:(O) 19 the face of a human being toward the palm tree on one side and the face of a lion toward the palm tree on the other. They were carved all around the whole temple.(P) 20 From the floor to the area above the entrance, cherubim and palm trees were carved on the wall of the main hall.

21 The main hall(Q) had a rectangular doorframe, and the one at the front of the Most Holy Place was similar. 22 There was a wooden altar(R) three cubits[l] high and two cubits square[m]; its corners, its base[n] and its sides were of wood. The man said to me, “This is the table(S) that is before the Lord.” 23 Both the main hall(T) and the Most Holy Place had double doors.(U) 24 Each door had two leaves—two hinged leaves(V) for each door. 25 And on the doors of the main hall were carved cherubim and palm trees like those carved on the walls, and there was a wooden overhang on the front of the portico. 26 On the sidewalls of the portico were narrow windows with palm trees carved on each side. The side rooms of the temple also had overhangs.(W)

The Rooms for the Priests

42 Then the man led me northward into the outer court and brought me to the rooms(X) opposite the temple courtyard(Y) and opposite the outer wall on the north side.(Z) The building whose door faced north was a hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide.[o] Both in the section twenty cubits[p] from the inner court and in the section opposite the pavement of the outer court, gallery(AA) faced gallery at the three levels.(AB) In front of the rooms was an inner passageway ten cubits wide and a hundred cubits[q] long.[r] Their doors were on the north.(AC) Now the upper rooms were narrower, for the galleries took more space from them than from the rooms on the lower and middle floors of the building. The rooms on the top floor had no pillars, as the courts had; so they were smaller in floor space than those on the lower and middle floors. There was an outer wall parallel to the rooms and the outer court; it extended in front of the rooms for fifty cubits. While the row of rooms on the side next to the outer court was fifty cubits long, the row on the side nearest the sanctuary was a hundred cubits long. The lower rooms had an entrance(AD) on the east side as one enters them from the outer court.

10 On the south side[s] along the length of the wall of the outer court, adjoining the temple courtyard(AE) and opposite the outer wall, were rooms(AF) 11 with a passageway in front of them. These were like the rooms on the north; they had the same length and width, with similar exits and dimensions. Similar to the doorways on the north 12 were the doorways of the rooms on the south. There was a doorway at the beginning of the passageway that was parallel to the corresponding wall extending eastward, by which one enters the rooms.

13 Then he said to me, “The north(AG) and south rooms(AH) facing the temple courtyard(AI) are the priests’ rooms, where the priests who approach the Lord will eat the most holy offerings. There they will put the most holy offerings—the grain offerings,(AJ) the sin offerings[t](AK) and the guilt offerings(AL)—for the place is holy.(AM) 14 Once the priests enter the holy precincts, they are not to go into the outer court until they leave behind the garments(AN) in which they minister, for these are holy. They are to put on other clothes before they go near the places that are for the people.(AO)

15 When he had finished measuring what was inside the temple area, he led me out by the east gate(AP) and measured the area all around: 16 He measured the east side with the measuring rod; it was five hundred cubits.[u][v] 17 He measured the north side; it was five hundred cubits[w] by the measuring rod. 18 He measured the south side; it was five hundred cubits by the measuring rod. 19 Then he turned to the west side and measured; it was five hundred cubits by the measuring rod. 20 So he measured(AQ) the area(AR) on all four sides. It had a wall around it,(AS) five hundred cubits long and five hundred cubits wide,(AT) to separate the holy from the common.(AU)

God’s Glory Returns to the Temple

43 Then the man brought me to the gate facing east,(AV) and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters,(AW) and the land was radiant with his glory.(AX) The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when he[x] came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown. The glory(AY) of the Lord entered the temple through the gate facing east.(AZ) Then the Spirit(BA) lifted me up(BB) and brought me into the inner court, and the glory(BC) of the Lord filled the temple.(BD)

While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from inside the temple. He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne(BE) and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites forever. The people of Israel will never again defile(BF) my holy name—neither they nor their kings—by their prostitution and the funeral offerings[y] for their kings at their death.[z](BG) When they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they defiled my holy name by their detestable practices. So I destroyed them in my anger. Now let them put away from me their prostitution and the funeral offerings for their kings, and I will live among them forever.(BH)

10 “Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed(BI) of their sins. Let them consider its perfection, 11 and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations[aa] and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow all its regulations.(BJ)

12 “This is the law of the temple: All the surrounding area(BK) on top of the mountain will be most holy.(BL) Such is the law of the temple.

The Great Altar Restored

13 “These are the measurements of the altar(BM) in long cubits,[ab] that cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth: Its gutter is a cubit deep and a cubit wide, with a rim of one span[ac] around the edge. And this is the height of the altar: 14 From the gutter on the ground up to the lower ledge that goes around the altar it is two cubits high, and the ledge is a cubit wide.[ad] From this lower ledge to the upper ledge that goes around the altar it is four cubits high, and that ledge is also a cubit wide.[ae] 15 Above that, the altar hearth(BN) is four cubits high, and four horns(BO) project upward from the hearth. 16 The altar hearth is square, twelve cubits[af] long and twelve cubits wide.(BP) 17 The upper ledge(BQ) also is square, fourteen cubits[ag] long and fourteen cubits wide. All around the altar is a gutter of one cubit with a rim of half a cubit.[ah] The steps(BR) of the altar face east.(BS)

18 Then he said to me, “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: These will be the regulations for sacrificing burnt offerings(BT) and splashing blood(BU) against the altar when it is built: 19 You are to give a young bull(BV) as a sin offering[ai] to the Levitical priests of the family of Zadok,(BW) who come near(BX) to minister before me, declares the Sovereign Lord. 20 You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar(BY) and on the four corners of the upper ledge(BZ) and all around the rim, and so purify the altar(CA) and make atonement for it. 21 You are to take the bull for the sin offering and burn it in the designated part of the temple area outside the sanctuary.(CB)

22 “On the second day you are to offer a male goat without defect for a sin offering, and the altar is to be purified as it was purified with the bull. 23 When you have finished purifying it, you are to offer a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(CC) 24 You are to offer them before the Lord, and the priests are to sprinkle salt(CD) on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the Lord.

25 “For seven days(CE) you are to provide a male goat daily for a sin offering; you are also to provide a young bull and a ram from the flock, both without defect.(CF) 26 For seven days they are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it; thus they will dedicate it. 27 At the end of these days, from the eighth day(CG) on, the priests are to present your burnt offerings(CH) and fellowship offerings(CI) on the altar. Then I will accept you, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

The Priesthood Restored

44 Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east,(CJ) and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it.(CK) It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it. The prince himself is the only one who may sit inside the gateway to eat in the presence(CL) of the Lord. He is to enter by way of the portico of the gateway and go out the same way.(CM)

Then the man brought me by way of the north gate(CN) to the front of the temple. I looked and saw the glory of the Lord filling the temple(CO) of the Lord, and I fell facedown.(CP)

The Lord said to me, “Son of man, look carefully, listen closely and give attention to everything I tell you concerning all the regulations and instructions regarding the temple of the Lord. Give attention to the entrance(CQ) to the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary.(CR) Say to rebellious Israel,(CS) ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Enough of your detestable practices, people of Israel! In addition to all your other detestable practices, you brought foreigners uncircumcised in heart(CT) and flesh into my sanctuary, desecrating my temple while you offered me food, fat and blood, and you broke my covenant.(CU) Instead of carrying out your duty in regard to my holy things, you put others in charge of my sanctuary.(CV) This is what the Sovereign Lord says: No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and flesh is to enter my sanctuary, not even the foreigners who live among the Israelites.(CW)

10 “‘The Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray(CX) and who wandered from me after their idols must bear the consequences of their sin.(CY) 11 They may serve in my sanctuary, having charge of the gates of the temple and serving in it; they may slaughter the burnt offerings(CZ) and sacrifices for the people and stand before the people and serve them.(DA) 12 But because they served them in the presence of their idols and made the people of Israel fall(DB) into sin, therefore I have sworn with uplifted hand(DC) that they must bear the consequences of their sin, declares the Sovereign Lord.(DD) 13 They are not to come near to serve me as priests or come near any of my holy things or my most holy offerings; they must bear the shame(DE) of their detestable practices.(DF) 14 And I will appoint them to guard the temple for all the work that is to be done in it.(DG)

15 “‘But the Levitical priests, who are descendants of Zadok(DH) and who guarded my sanctuary when the Israelites went astray from me, are to come near to minister before me; they are to stand before me to offer sacrifices of fat(DI) and blood, declares the Sovereign Lord.(DJ) 16 They alone are to enter my sanctuary; they alone are to come near my table(DK) to minister before me and serve me as guards.(DL)

17 “‘When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen clothes;(DM) they must not wear any woolen garment while ministering at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple. 18 They are to wear linen turbans(DN) on their heads and linen undergarments(DO) around their waists. They must not wear anything that makes them perspire.(DP) 19 When they go out into the outer court where the people are, they are to take off the clothes they have been ministering in and are to leave them in the sacred rooms, and put on other clothes, so that the people are not consecrated(DQ) through contact with their garments.(DR)

20 “‘They must not shave(DS) their heads or let their hair grow long, but they are to keep the hair of their heads trimmed.(DT) 21 No priest is to drink wine when he enters the inner court.(DU) 22 They must not marry widows or divorced women; they may marry only virgins of Israelite descent or widows of priests.(DV) 23 They are to teach my people the difference between the holy and the common(DW) and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.(DX)

24 “‘In any dispute, the priests are to serve as judges(DY) and decide it according to my ordinances. They are to keep my laws and my decrees for all my appointed festivals,(DZ) and they are to keep my Sabbaths holy.(EA)

25 “‘A priest must not defile himself by going near a dead person; however, if the dead person was his father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister, then he may defile himself.(EB) 26 After he is cleansed, he must wait seven days.(EC) 27 On the day he goes into the inner court of the sanctuary(ED) to minister in the sanctuary, he is to offer a sin offering[aj](EE) for himself, declares the Sovereign Lord.

28 “‘I am to be the only inheritance(EF) the priests have. You are to give them no possession in Israel; I will be their possession. 29 They will eat(EG) the grain offerings, the sin offerings and the guilt offerings; and everything in Israel devoted[ak] to the Lord(EH) will belong to them.(EI) 30 The best of all the firstfruits(EJ) and of all your special gifts will belong to the priests. You are to give them the first portion of your ground meal(EK) so that a blessing(EL) may rest on your household.(EM) 31 The priests must not eat anything, whether bird or animal, found dead(EN) or torn by wild animals.(EO)

Israel Fully Restored

45 “‘When you allot the land as an inheritance,(EP) you are to present to the Lord a portion of the land as a sacred district, 25,000 cubits[al] long and 20,000[am] cubits[an] wide; the entire area will be holy.(EQ) Of this, a section 500 cubits[ao] square(ER) is to be for the sanctuary, with 50 cubits[ap] around it for open land. In the sacred district, measure off a section 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[aq] wide. In it will be the sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. It will be the sacred portion of the land for the priests,(ES) who minister in the sanctuary and who draw near to minister before the Lord. It will be a place for their houses as well as a holy place for the sanctuary.(ET) An area 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide will belong to the Levites, who serve in the temple, as their possession for towns to live in.[ar](EU)

“‘You are to give the city as its property an area 5,000 cubits[as] wide and 25,000 cubits long, adjoining the sacred portion; it will belong to all Israel.(EV)

“‘The prince will have the land bordering each side of the area formed by the sacred district and the property of the city. It will extend westward from the west side and eastward from the east side, running lengthwise from the western to the eastern border parallel to one of the tribal portions.(EW) This land will be his possession in Israel. And my princes will no longer oppress my people but will allow the people of Israel to possess the land according to their tribes.(EX)

“‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have gone far enough, princes of Israel! Give up your violence and oppression(EY) and do what is just and right.(EZ) Stop dispossessing my people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 10 You are to use accurate scales,(FA) an accurate ephah[at](FB) and an accurate bath.[au] 11 The ephah(FC) and the bath are to be the same size, the bath containing a tenth of a homer and the ephah a tenth of a homer; the homer is to be the standard measure for both. 12 The shekel[av] is to consist of twenty gerahs.(FD) Twenty shekels plus twenty-five shekels plus fifteen shekels equal one mina.[aw]

13 “‘This is the special gift you are to offer: a sixth of an ephah[ax] from each homer of wheat and a sixth of an ephah[ay] from each homer of barley. 14 The prescribed portion of olive oil, measured by the bath, is a tenth of a bath[az] from each cor (which consists of ten baths or one homer, for ten baths are equivalent to a homer). 15 Also one sheep is to be taken from every flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These will be used for the grain offerings, burnt offerings(FE) and fellowship offerings to make atonement(FF) for the people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 All the people of the land will be required to give this special offering to the prince in Israel. 17 It will be the duty of the prince to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings and drink offerings at the festivals, the New Moons(FG) and the Sabbaths(FH)—at all the appointed festivals of Israel. He will provide the sin offerings,[ba] grain offerings, burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to make atonement for the Israelites.(FI)

18 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In the first month(FJ) on the first day you are to take a young bull without defect(FK) and purify the sanctuary.(FL) 19 The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the temple, on the four corners of the upper ledge(FM) of the altar(FN) and on the gateposts of the inner court. 20 You are to do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who sins unintentionally(FO) or through ignorance; so you are to make atonement for the temple.

21 “‘In the first month on the fourteenth day you are to observe the Passover,(FP) a festival lasting seven days, during which you shall eat bread made without yeast. 22 On that day the prince is to provide a bull as a sin offering for himself and for all the people of the land.(FQ) 23 Every day during the seven days of the festival he is to provide seven bulls and seven rams(FR) without defect as a burnt offering to the Lord, and a male goat for a sin offering.(FS) 24 He is to provide as a grain offering(FT) an ephah for each bull and an ephah for each ram, along with a hin[bb] of olive oil for each ephah.(FU)

25 “‘During the seven days of the festival,(FV) which begins in the seventh month on the fifteenth day, he is to make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings and oil.(FW)

46 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The gate of the inner court(FX) facing east(FY) is to be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day and on the day of the New Moon(FZ) it is to be opened. The prince is to enter from the outside through the portico(GA) of the gateway and stand by the gatepost. The priests are to sacrifice his burnt offering(GB) and his fellowship offerings. He is to bow down in worship at the threshold of the gateway and then go out, but the gate will not be shut until evening.(GC) On the Sabbaths(GD) and New Moons the people of the land are to worship in the presence of the Lord at the entrance of that gateway.(GE) The burnt offering the prince brings to the Lord on the Sabbath day is to be six male lambs and a ram, all without defect. The grain offering given with the ram is to be an ephah,[bc] and the grain offering with the lambs is to be as much as he pleases, along with a hin[bd] of olive oil for each ephah.(GF) On the day of the New Moon(GG) he is to offer a young bull, six lambs and a ram, all without defect.(GH) He is to provide as a grain offering one ephah with the bull, one ephah with the ram, and with the lambs as much as he wants to give, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(GI) When the prince enters, he is to go in through the portico(GJ) of the gateway, and he is to come out the same way.(GK)

“‘When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed festivals,(GL) whoever enters by the north gate to worship is to go out the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate is to go out the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which they entered, but each is to go out the opposite gate. 10 The prince is to be among them, going in when they go in and going out when they go out.(GM) 11 At the feasts and the appointed festivals, the grain offering is to be an ephah with a bull, an ephah with a ram, and with the lambs as much as he pleases, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(GN)

12 “‘When the prince provides(GO) a freewill offering(GP) to the Lord—whether a burnt offering or fellowship offerings—the gate facing east is to be opened for him. He shall offer his burnt offering or his fellowship offerings as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out, the gate will be shut.(GQ)

13 “‘Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning(GR) you shall provide it.(GS) 14 You are also to provide with it morning by morning a grain offering, consisting of a sixth of an ephah[be] with a third of a hin[bf] of oil(GT) to moisten the flour. The presenting of this grain offering to the Lord is a lasting ordinance.(GU) 15 So the lamb and the grain offering and the oil shall be provided morning by morning for a regular(GV) burnt offering.(GW)

16 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: If the prince makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his sons, it will also belong to his descendants; it is to be their property by inheritance.(GX) 17 If, however, he makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, the servant may keep it until the year of freedom;(GY) then it will revert to the prince. His inheritance belongs to his sons only; it is theirs. 18 The prince must not take(GZ) any of the inheritance(HA) of the people, driving them off their property. He is to give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that not one of my people will be separated from their property.’”

19 Then the man brought me through the entrance(HB) at the side of the gate to the sacred rooms facing north,(HC) which belonged to the priests, and showed me a place at the western end. 20 He said to me, “This is the place where the priests are to cook the guilt offering and the sin offering[bg] and bake the grain offering, to avoid bringing them into the outer court and consecrating(HD) the people.”(HE)

21 He then brought me to the outer court and led me around to its four corners, and I saw in each corner another court. 22 In the four corners of the outer court were enclosed[bh] courts, forty cubits long and thirty cubits wide;[bi] each of the courts in the four corners was the same size. 23 Around the inside of each of the four courts was a ledge of stone, with places for fire built all around under the ledge. 24 He said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who minister at the temple are to cook the sacrifices of the people.”

The River From the Temple

47 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple, and I saw water(HF) coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.(HG) He then brought me out through the north gate(HH) and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side.

As the man went eastward with a measuring line(HI) in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits[bj] and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river(HJ) that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.(HK) He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.(HL) He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,[bk](HM) where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.(HN) Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.(HO) 10 Fishermen(HP) will stand along the shore; from En Gedi(HQ) to En Eglaim there will be places for spreading nets.(HR) The fish will be of many kinds(HS)—like the fish of the Mediterranean Sea.(HT) 11 But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.(HU) 12 Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.(HV) Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit(HW) fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary(HX) flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.(HY)

The Boundaries of the Land

13 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “These are the boundaries(HZ) of the land that you will divide among the twelve tribes of Israel as their inheritance, with two portions for Joseph.(IA) 14 You are to divide it equally among them. Because I swore with uplifted hand to give it to your ancestors, this land will become your inheritance.(IB)

15 “This is to be the boundary of the land:(IC)

“On the north side it will run from the Mediterranean Sea(ID) by the Hethlon road(IE) past Lebo Hamath to Zedad, 16 Berothah[bl](IF) and Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath),(IG) as far as Hazer Hattikon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 The boundary will extend from the sea to Hazar Enan,[bm] along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary.(IH)

18 “On the east side the boundary will run between Hauran and Damascus, along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, to the Dead Sea and as far as Tamar.[bn] This will be the eastern boundary.(II)

19 “On the south side it will run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah Kadesh,(IJ) then along the Wadi of Egypt(IK) to the Mediterranean Sea.(IL) This will be the southern boundary.

20 “On the west side, the Mediterranean Sea will be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo Hamath.(IM) This will be the western boundary.(IN)

21 “You are to distribute this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You are to allot it as an inheritance(IO) for yourselves and for the foreigners(IP) residing among you and who have children. You are to consider them as native-born Israelites; along with you they are to be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.(IQ) 23 In whatever tribe a foreigner resides, there you are to give them their inheritance,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(IR)

The Division of the Land

48 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan(IS) will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road(IT) to Lebo Hamath;(IU) Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.

“Asher(IV) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.

“Naphtali(IW) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.

“Manasseh(IX) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.

“Ephraim(IY) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh(IZ) from east to west.(JA)

“Reuben(JB) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.

“Judah(JC) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.

“Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits[bo] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it.(JD)

“The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[bp] wide.(JE) 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord.(JF) 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites,(JG) who were faithful in serving me(JH) and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray.(JI) 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.

13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits.(JJ) 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord.(JK)

15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits[bq] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits,[br] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits.(JL) 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits[bs] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.(JM) 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.

21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them.(JN) 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.

23 “As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin(JO) will have one portion; it will extend from the east side to the west side.

24 “Simeon(JP) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Benjamin from east to west.

25 “Issachar(JQ) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Simeon from east to west.

26 “Zebulun(JR) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Issachar from east to west.

27 “Gad(JS) will have one portion; it will border the territory of Zebulun from east to west.

28 “The southern boundary of Gad will run south from Tamar(JT) to the waters of Meribah Kadesh, then along the Wadi of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.(JU)

29 “This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these will be their portions,” declares the Sovereign Lord.(JV)

The Gates of the New City

30 “These will be the exits of the city: Beginning on the north side, which is 4,500 cubits long, 31 the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. The three gates on the north side will be the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah and the gate of Levi.

32 “On the east side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin and the gate of Dan.

33 “On the south side, which measures 4,500 cubits, will be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar and the gate of Zebulun.

34 “On the west side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher and the gate of Naphtali.(JW)

35 “The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits.[bt]

“And the name of the city from that time on will be:

the Lord is there.(JX)
