God Promises Action

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for [a](A)under compulsion he will let them go, and [b]under compulsion he will drive them out of his land.”

God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am (B)the Lord; and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as [c](C)God Almighty, but by (D)My name, [d]Lord, I did not make Myself known to them. I also established (E)My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the [e]land in which they sojourned. Furthermore I have (F)heard the groaning of the sons of Israel, because the Egyptians are holding them in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant. Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘(G)I am the Lord, and (H)I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also (I)redeem you with (J)an outstretched arm and with great judgments. Then I will take you [f](K)for My people, and (L)I will be [g]your God; and (M)you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you to the land which (N)I [h]swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and (O)I will give it to you for a possession; (P)I am the Lord.’” So Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses on (Q)account of their [i]despondency and cruel bondage.

10 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 11 (R)Go, [j]tell Pharaoh king of Egypt [k]to let the sons of Israel go out of his land.” 12 But Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, “Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; (S)how then will Pharaoh listen to me, for I am [l](T)unskilled in speech?” 13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them a charge to the sons of Israel and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

28 Now it came about on the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 that the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “(AM)I am the Lord; (AN)speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I speak to you.” 30 But Moses said before the Lord, “Behold, I am [w](AO)unskilled in speech; how then will Pharaoh listen to me?”

The Lord Tells Moses to Speak to Pharaoh Again

God spoke to Moses, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I didn’t make myself known to them by my name, the Lord. I even made a promise [a] to give them Canaan, the land where they lived as foreigners. Now I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians hold in slavery, and I have remembered my promise.

“Tell the Israelites, ‘I am the Lord. I will bring you out from under the oppression of the Egyptians, and I will free you from slavery. I will rescue you with my powerful arm and with mighty acts of judgment. Then I will make you my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the forced labor of the Egyptians. I will bring you to the land I solemnly swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your own possession. I am the Lord.’ ”

Moses reported this to the Israelites. But they would not listen to him because they were so discouraged by their back-breaking work.

10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, 11 “Go tell Pharaoh (the king of Egypt) to let the Israelites leave his country.”

12 But Moses protested to the Lord, “The Israelites wouldn’t listen to me. Why would Pharaoh listen to me? I’m such a poor speaker.”

13 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron about the Israelites and Pharaoh (the king of Egypt). He commanded them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.

Aaron’s Staff Becomes a Snake

28 At that time the Lord spoke to Moses in Egypt. 29 He said to Moses, “I am the Lord. Tell Pharaoh (the king of Egypt) everything I tell you.”

30 But Moses said to the Lord, “Why would Pharaoh listen to me?”

Footnotes

  1. 6:4 Or “covenant.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to the king of Egypt. I will use my great power against him, and he will let my people go. Because of my power, he will force them out of his country.”

Then God said to Moses, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by the name God Almighty, but they did not know me by my name, the Lord. I also made my agreement with them to give them the land of Canaan. They lived in that land, but it was not their own. Now I have heard the cries of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are treating as slaves, and I remember my agreement. So tell the people of Israel that I say to them, ‘I am the Lord. I will save you from the hard work the Egyptians force you to do. I will make you free, so you will not be slaves to the Egyptians. I will free you by my great power, and I will punish the Egyptians terribly. I will make you my own people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God, the One who saves you from the hard work the Egyptians force you to do. I will lead you to the land that I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give you that land to own. I am the Lord.’”

So Moses told this to the Israelites, but they would not listen to him. They were discouraged, and their slavery was hard.

10 Then the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Go tell the king of Egypt that he must let the Israelites leave his land.”

12 But Moses answered, “The Israelites will not listen to me, so surely the king will not listen to me either. I am not a good speaker.”

13 But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them orders about the Israelites and the king of Egypt. He commanded them to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
