First Encounter with Pharaoh

5 Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let My people go, that they may [a]hold (A)a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ”

2 And Pharaoh said, (B)“Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, (C)nor will I let Israel go.”

3 So they said, (D)“The God of the Hebrews has (E)met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest He fall upon us with (F)pestilence or with the sword.”

4 Then the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your (G)labor.” 5 And Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are (H)many now, and you make them rest from their labor!”

6 So the same day Pharaoh commanded the (I)taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying, 7 “You shall no longer give the people straw to make (J)brick as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And you shall lay on them the quota of bricks which they made before. You shall not reduce it. For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9 Let more work be laid on the men, that they may labor in it, and let them not regard false words.”

10 And the taskmasters of the people and their officers went out and spoke to the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh: ‘I will not give you straw. 11 Go, get yourselves straw where you can find it; yet none of your work will be reduced.’ ” 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. 13 And the taskmasters forced them to hurry, saying, “Fulfill your work, your daily quota, as when there was straw.” 14 Also the (K)officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were (L)beaten and were asked, “Why have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as before?”

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, “Why are you dealing thus with your servants? 16 There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, ‘Make brick!’ And indeed your servants are beaten, but the fault is in your own people.”

17 But he said, “You are idle! Idle! Therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Therefore go now and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the quota of bricks.” 19 And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble after it was said, “You shall not reduce any bricks from your daily quota.”

20 Then, as they came out from Pharaoh, they met Moses and Aaron who stood there to meet them. 21 (M)And they said to them, “Let the Lord look on you and judge, because you have made [b]us abhorrent in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

Israel’s Deliverance Assured(N)

22 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all.”

God Renews His Promise to Israel

6 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh. For (O)with a strong hand he will let them go, and with a strong hand (P)he will drive them out of his land.”

2 And God spoke to Moses and said to him: “I am [c]the Lord. 3 (Q)I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as (R)God Almighty, but by My name (S)Lord[d] I was not known to them. 4 (T)I have also [e]established My covenant with them, (U)to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their [f]pilgrimage, (V)in which they were [g]strangers. 5 And (W)I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant. 6 Therefore say to the children of Israel: (X)‘I am the Lord; (Y)I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will (Z)rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with [h]an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 I will (AA)take you as My people, and (AB)I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out (AC)from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you into the land which I (AD)swore[i] to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the Lord.’ ” 9 So Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel; (AE)but they did not heed Moses, because of (AF)anguish[j] of spirit and cruel bondage.

10 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 11 “Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the children of Israel go out of his land.”

12 And Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, “The children of Israel have not heeded me. How then shall Pharaoh heed me, for (AG)I am [k]of uncircumcised lips?”

13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, and gave them a (AH)command[l] for the children of Israel and for Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

The Family of Moses and Aaron(AI)

14 These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: (AJ)The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. These are the families of Reuben. 15 (AK)And the sons of Simeon were [m]Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. These are the families of Simeon. 16 These are the names of (AL)the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. And the years of the life of Levi were one hundred and thirty-seven. 17 (AM)The sons of Gershon were Libni and Shimi according to their families. 18 And (AN)the sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. And the years of the life of Kohath were one hundred and thirty-three. 19 (AO)The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of Levi according to their generations.

20 Now (AP)Amram took for himself (AQ)Jochebed, his father’s sister, as wife; and she bore him (AR)Aaron and Moses. And the years of the life of Amram were one hundred and thirty-seven. 21 (AS)The sons of Izhar were Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri. 22 And (AT)the sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan, and Zithri. 23 Aaron took to himself Elisheba, daughter of (AU)Amminadab, sister of Nahshon, as wife; and she bore him (AV)Nadab, Abihu, (AW)Eleazar, and Ithamar. 24 And (AX)the sons of Korah were Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph. These are the families of the Korahites. 25 Eleazar, Aaron’s son, took for himself one of the daughters of Putiel as wife; and (AY)she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites according to their families.

26 These are the same Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said, “Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their (AZ)armies.”[n] 27 These are the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, (BA)to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt. These are the same Moses and Aaron.

Aaron Is Moses’ Spokesman

28 And it came to pass, on the day the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 that the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “I am the Lord. (BB)Speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.”

30 But Moses said before the Lord, “Behold, (BC)I am [o]of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh heed me?”

Moses Before Pharaoh

7 So the Lord said to Moses: “See, I have made you (BD)as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be (BE)your prophet. 2 You (BF)shall speak all that I command you. And Aaron your brother shall tell Pharaoh to send the children of Israel out of his land. 3 And (BG)I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and (BH)multiply My (BI)signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 But (BJ)Pharaoh will not heed you, so (BK)that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring My [p]armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt (BL)by great judgments. 5 And the Egyptians (BM)shall know that I am the Lord, when I (BN)stretch out My hand on Egypt and (BO)bring out the children of Israel from among them.”

6 Then Moses and Aaron (BP)did so; just as the Lord commanded them, so they did. 7 And Moses was (BQ)eighty years old and (BR)Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Aaron’s Miraculous Rod(BS)

8 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 9 “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, (BT)‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, (BU)‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’ ” 10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just (BV)as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it (BW)became a serpent.

11 But Pharaoh also (BX)called the wise men and (BY)the [q]sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also (BZ)did in like manner with their [r]enchantments. 12 For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. 13 And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said.

The First Plague: Waters Become Blood

14 So the Lord said to Moses: (CA)“Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning, when he goes out to the (CB)water, and you shall stand by the river’s bank to meet him; and (CC)the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand. 16 And you shall say to him, (CD)‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go, (CE)that they may [s]serve Me in the wilderness”; but indeed, until now you would not hear! 17 Thus says the Lord: “By this (CF)you shall know that I am the Lord. Behold, I will strike the waters which are in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and (CG)they shall be turned (CH)to blood. 18 And the fish that are in the river shall die, the river shall stink, and the Egyptians will (CI)loathe[t] to drink the water of the river.” ’ ”

19 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and (CJ)stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, that they may become blood. And there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in buckets of wood and pitchers of stone.’ ” 20 And Moses and Aaron did so, just as the Lord commanded. So he (CK)lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the (CL)waters that were in the river were turned to blood. 21 The fish that were in the river died, the river stank, and the Egyptians (CM)could not drink the water of the river. So there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

22 (CN)Then the magicians of Egypt did (CO)so with their [u]enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, (CP)as the Lord had said. 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house. Neither was his heart moved by this. 24 So all the Egyptians dug all around the river for water to drink, because they could not drink the water of the river. 25 And seven days passed after the Lord had struck the river.

The Second Plague: Frogs

8 And the Lord spoke to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Let My people go, (CQ)that they may serve Me. 2 But if you (CR)refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all your territory with (CS)frogs. 3 So the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into your house, into your (CT)bedroom, on your bed, into the houses of your servants, on your people, into your ovens, and into your kneading bowls. 4 And the frogs shall come up on you, on your people, and on all your servants.” ’ ”

5 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, (CU)‘Stretch out your hand with your rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up on the land of Egypt.’ ” 6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and (CV)the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. 7 (CW)And the magicians did so with their [v]enchantments, and brought up frogs on the land of Egypt.

8 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, (CX)“Entreat[w] the Lord that He may take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people (CY)go, that they may sacrifice to the Lord.”

9 And Moses said to Pharaoh, “Accept the honor of saying when I shall intercede for you, for your servants, and for your people, to destroy the frogs from you and your houses, that they may remain in the river only.”

10 So he said, “Tomorrow.” And he said, “Let it be according to your word, that you may know that (CZ)there is no one like the Lord our God. 11 And the frogs shall depart from you, from your houses, from your servants, and from your people. They shall remain in the river only.”

12 Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh. And Moses (DA)cried out to the Lord concerning the frogs which He had brought against Pharaoh. 13 So the Lord did according to the word of Moses. And the frogs died out of the houses, out of the courtyards, and out of the fields. 14 They gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was (DB)relief, (DC)he hardened his heart and did not heed them, as the Lord had said.

The Third Plague: Lice

16 So the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, so that it may become [x]lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’ ” 17 And they did so. For Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and struck the dust of the earth, and (DD)it became lice on man and beast. All the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

18 Now (DE)the magicians so worked with their [y]enchantments to bring forth lice, but they (DF)could not. So there were lice on man and beast. 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is (DG)the[z] finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s (DH)heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, just as the Lord had said.

The Fourth Plague: Flies

20 And the Lord said to Moses, (DI)“Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. Then say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: (DJ)“Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 21 Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. 22 And in that day (DK)I will set apart the land of (DL)Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may (DM)know that I am the Lord in the midst of the (DN)land. 23 I will [aa]make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this (DO)sign shall be.” ’ ” 24 And the Lord did so. (DP)Thick swarms of flies came into the house of Pharaoh, into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Egypt. The land was corrupted because of the swarms of flies.

25 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God in the land.”

26 And Moses said, “It is not right to do so, for we would be sacrificing (DQ)the abomination of the Egyptians to the Lord our God. If we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, then will they not [ab]stone us? 27 We will go (DR)three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God as (DS)He will command us.”

28 So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. (DT)Intercede for me.”

29 Then Moses said, “Indeed I am going out from you, and I will entreat the Lord, that the swarms of flies may depart tomorrow from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. But let Pharaoh not (DU)deal deceitfully anymore in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.”

30 So Moses went out from Pharaoh and (DV)entreated the Lord. 31 And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; He removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. Not one remained. 32 But Pharaoh (DW)hardened his heart at this time also; neither would he let the people go.

The Fifth Plague: Livestock Diseased

9 Then the Lord said to Moses, (DX)“Go in to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may (DY)serve Me. 2 For if you (DZ)refuse to let them go, and still hold them, 3 behold, the (EA)hand of the Lord will be on your cattle in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the oxen, and on the sheep—a very severe pestilence. 4 And (EB)the Lord will make a difference between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. So nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.” ’ ” 5 Then the Lord appointed a set time, saying, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this thing in the land.”

6 So the Lord did this thing on the next day, and (EC)all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the children of Israel, not one died. 7 Then Pharaoh sent, and indeed, not even one of the livestock of the Israelites was dead. But the (ED)heart of Pharaoh became hard, and he did not let the people go.

The Sixth Plague: Boils(EE)

8 So the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take for yourselves handfuls of ashes from a furnace, and let Moses scatter it toward the heavens in the sight of Pharaoh. 9 And it will become fine dust in all the land of Egypt, and it will cause (EF)boils that break out in sores on man and beast throughout all the land of Egypt.” 10 Then they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses scattered them toward heaven. And they caused (EG)boils that break out in sores on man and beast. 11 And the (EH)magicians could not stand before Moses because of the (EI)boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians. 12 But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he (EJ)did not heed them, just (EK)as the Lord had spoken to Moses.

The Seventh Plague: Hail

13 Then the Lord said to Moses, (EL)“Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may (EM)serve Me, 14 for at this time I will send all My plagues to your very heart, and on your servants and on your people, (EN)that you may know that there is none like Me in all the earth. 15 Now if I had (EO)stretched out My hand and struck you and your people with (EP)pestilence, then you would have been cut off from the earth. 16 But indeed for (EQ)this purpose I have raised you up, that I may (ER)show My power in you, and that My (ES)name may be declared in all the earth. 17 As yet you exalt yourself against My people in that you will not let them go. 18 Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause very heavy hail to rain down, such as has not been in Egypt since its founding until now. 19 Therefore send now and gather your livestock and all that you have in the field, for the hail shall come down on every man and every animal which is found in the field and is not brought home; and they shall die.” ’ ”

20 He who (ET)feared the word of the Lord among the (EU)servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his livestock flee to the houses. 21 But he who did not regard the word of the Lord left his servants and his livestock in the field.

22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be (EV)hail in all the land of Egypt—on man, on beast, and on every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.” 23 And Moses stretched out his rod toward heaven; and (EW)the Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire darted to the ground. And the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And the (EX)hail struck throughout the whole land of Egypt, all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail struck every herb of the field and broke every tree of the field. 26 (EY)Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.

27 And Pharaoh sent and (EZ)called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, (FA)“I have sinned this time. (FB)The Lord is righteous, and my people and I are wicked. 28 (FC)Entreat[ac] the Lord, that there may be no more [ad]mighty thundering and hail, for it is enough. I will let you (FD)go, and you shall stay no longer.”

29 So Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will (FE)spread out my hands to the Lord; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, that you may know that the (FF)earth is the Lord’s. 30 But as for you and your servants, (FG)I know that you will not yet fear the Lord God.”

31 Now the flax and the barley were struck, (FH)for the barley was in the head and the flax was in bud. 32 But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they are [ae]late crops.

33 So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and (FI)spread out his hands to the Lord; then the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain was not poured on the earth. 34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet more; and he hardened his heart, he and his servants. 35 So (FJ)the heart of Pharaoh was hard; neither would he let the children of Israel go, as the Lord had spoken by Moses.

The Eighth Plague: Locusts(FK)

10 Now the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh; (FL)for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his servants, (FM)that I may show these signs of Mine before him, 2 and that (FN)you may tell in the hearing of your son and your son’s son the mighty things I have done in Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them, that you may (FO)know that I am the Lord.”

3 So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to (FP)humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may (FQ)serve Me. 4 Or else, if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring (FR)locusts into your territory. 5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no one will be able to see the earth; and (FS)they shall eat the residue of what is left, which remains to you from the hail, and they shall eat every tree which grows up for you out of the field. 6 They shall (FT)fill your houses, the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians—which neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were on the earth to this day.’ ” And he turned and went out from Pharaoh.

7 Then Pharaoh’s (FU)servants said to him, “How long shall this man be (FV)a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?”

8 So Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Go, serve the Lord your God. Who are the ones that are going?”

9 And Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old; with our sons and our daughters, with our flocks and our herds we will go, for (FW)we must hold a feast to the Lord.”

10 Then he said to them, “The Lord had better be with you when I let you and your little ones go! Beware, for evil is ahead of you. 11 Not so! Go now, you who are men, and serve the Lord, for that is what you desired.” And they were driven (FX)out from Pharaoh’s presence.

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, (FY)“Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come upon the land of Egypt, and (FZ)eat every herb of the land—all that the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind on the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And (GA)the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested on all the territory of Egypt. They were very severe; (GB)previously there had been no such locusts as they, nor shall there be such after them. 15 For they (GC)covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they (GD)ate every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. So there remained nothing green on the trees or on the plants of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.

16 Then Pharaoh called (GE)for Moses and Aaron in haste, and said, (GF)“I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and (GG)entreat[af] the Lord your God, that He may take away from me this death only.” 18 So he (GH)went out from Pharaoh and entreated the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned a very strong west wind, which took the locusts away and blew them (GI)into the Red Sea. There remained not one locust in all the territory of Egypt. 20 But the Lord (GJ)hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.

The Ninth Plague: Darkness

21 Then the Lord said to Moses, (GK)“Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, [ag]darkness which may even be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was (GL)thick darkness in all the land of Egypt (GM)three days. 23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. (GN)But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

24 Then Pharaoh called to Moses and (GO)said, “Go, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be kept back. Let your (GP)little ones also go with you.”

25 But Moses said, “You must also give [ah]us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God. 26 Our (GQ)livestock also shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind. For we must take some of them to serve the Lord our God, and even we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.”

27 But the Lord (GR)hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, (GS)“Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”

29 So Moses said, “You have spoken well. (GT)I will never see your face again.”

Death of the Firstborn Announced(GU)

11 And the Lord said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. (GV)Afterward he will let you go from here. (GW)When he lets you go, he will surely drive you out of here altogether. 2 Speak now in the hearing of the people, and let every man ask from his neighbor and every woman from her neighbor, (GX)articles of silver and articles of gold.” 3 (GY)And the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man (GZ)Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.

4 Then Moses said, “Thus says the Lord: (HA)‘About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt; 5 and (HB)all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the female servant who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the animals. 6 (HC)Then there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, (HD)such as was not like it before, nor shall be like it again. 7 (HE)But against none of the children of Israel (HF)shall a dog [ai]move its tongue, against man or beast, that you may know that the Lord does make a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.’ 8 And (HG)all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me, saying, ‘Get out, and all the people who follow you!’ After that I will go out.” (HH)Then he went out from Pharaoh in great anger.

9 But the Lord said to Moses, (HI)“Pharaoh will not heed you, so that (HJ)My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” 10 So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; (HK)and the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

Moisés y Aarón ante Faraón

5 Después Moisés y Aarón entraron a la presencia de Faraón y le dijeron: Jehová el Dios de Israel dice así: Deja ir a mi pueblo a celebrarme fiesta en el desierto. 2 Y Faraón respondió: ¿Quién es Jehová, para que yo oiga su voz y deje ir a Israel? Yo no conozco a Jehová, ni tampoco dejaré ir a Israel. 3 Y ellos dijeron: El Dios de los hebreos nos ha encontrado; iremos, pues, ahora, camino de tres días por el desierto, y ofreceremos sacrificios a Jehová nuestro Dios, para que no venga sobre nosotros con peste o con espada. 4 Entonces el rey de Egipto les dijo: Moisés y Aarón, ¿por qué hacéis cesar al pueblo de su trabajo? Volved a vuestras tareas. 5 Dijo también Faraón: He aquí el pueblo de la tierra es ahora mucho, y vosotros les hacéis cesar de sus tareas. 6 Y mandó Faraón aquel mismo día a los cuadrilleros del pueblo que lo tenían a su cargo, y a sus capataces, diciendo: 7 De aquí en adelante no daréis paja al pueblo para hacer ladrillo, como hasta ahora; vayan ellos y recojan por sí mismos la paja. 8 Y les impondréis la misma tarea de ladrillo que hacían antes, y no les disminuiréis nada; porque están ociosos, por eso levantan la voz diciendo: Vamos y ofrezcamos sacrificios a nuestro Dios. 9 Agrávese la servidumbre sobre ellos, para que se ocupen en ella, y no atiendan a palabras mentirosas.

10 Y saliendo los cuadrilleros del pueblo y sus capataces, hablaron al pueblo, diciendo: Así ha dicho Faraón: Yo no os doy paja. 11 Id vosotros y recoged la paja donde la halléis; pero nada se disminuirá de vuestra tarea. 12 Entonces el pueblo se esparció por toda la tierra de Egipto para recoger rastrojo en lugar de paja. 13 Y los cuadrilleros los apremiaban, diciendo: Acabad vuestra obra, la tarea de cada día en su día, como cuando se os daba paja. 14 Y azotaban a los capataces de los hijos de Israel que los cuadrilleros de Faraón habían puesto sobre ellos, diciendo: ¿Por qué no habéis cumplido vuestra tarea de ladrillo ni ayer ni hoy, como antes?

15 Y los capataces de los hijos de Israel vinieron a Faraón y se quejaron a él, diciendo: ¿Por qué lo haces así con tus siervos? 16 No se da paja a tus siervos, y con todo nos dicen: Haced el ladrillo. Y he aquí tus siervos son azotados, y el pueblo tuyo es el culpable. 17 Y él respondió: Estáis ociosos, sí, ociosos, y por eso decís: Vamos y ofrezcamos sacrificios a Jehová. 18 Id pues, ahora, y trabajad. No se os dará paja, y habéis de entregar la misma tarea de ladrillo. 19 Entonces los capataces de los hijos de Israel se vieron en aflicción, al decírseles: No se disminuirá nada de vuestro ladrillo, de la tarea de cada día. 20 Y encontrando a Moisés y a Aarón, que estaban a la vista de ellos cuando salían de la presencia de Faraón, 21 les dijeron: Mire Jehová sobre vosotros, y juzgue; pues nos habéis hecho abominables delante de Faraón y de sus siervos, poniéndoles la espada en la mano para que nos maten.

Jehová comisiona a Moisés y a Aarón

22 Entonces Moisés se volvió a Jehová, y dijo: Señor, ¿por qué afliges a este pueblo? ¿Para qué me enviaste? 23 Porque desde que yo vine a Faraón para hablarle en tu nombre, ha afligido a este pueblo; y tú no has librado a tu pueblo.

6 Jehová respondió a Moisés: Ahora verás lo que yo haré a Faraón; porque con mano fuerte los dejará ir, y con mano fuerte los echará de su tierra. 2 Habló todavía Dios a Moisés, y le dijo: Yo soy JEHOVÁ. 3 Y aparecí a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob como Dios Omnipotente,(A) mas en mi nombre JEHOVÁ no me di a conocer a ellos. 4 También establecí mi pacto con ellos, de darles la tierra de Canaán, la tierra en que fueron forasteros, y en la cual habitaron. 5 Asimismo yo he oído el gemido de los hijos de Israel, a quienes hacen servir los egipcios, y me he acordado de mi pacto. 6 Por tanto, dirás a los hijos de Israel: Yo soy JEHOVÁ; y yo os sacaré de debajo de las tareas pesadas de Egipto, y os libraré de su servidumbre, y os redimiré con brazo extendido, y con juicios grandes; 7 y os tomaré por mi pueblo y seré vuestro Dios; y vosotros sabréis que yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios, que os sacó de debajo de las tareas pesadas de Egipto. 8 Y os meteré en la tierra por la cual alcé mi mano jurando que la daría a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob; y yo os la daré por heredad. Yo JEHOVÁ.

9 De esta manera habló Moisés a los hijos de Israel; pero ellos no escuchaban a Moisés a causa de la congoja de espíritu, y de la dura servidumbre. 10 Y habló Jehová a Moisés, diciendo: 11 Entra y habla a Faraón rey de Egipto, que deje ir de su tierra a los hijos de Israel. 12 Y respondió Moisés delante de Jehová: He aquí, los hijos de Israel no me escuchan; ¿cómo, pues, me escuchará Faraón, siendo yo torpe de labios? 13 Entonces Jehová habló a Moisés y a Aarón y les dio mandamiento para los hijos de Israel, y para Faraón rey de Egipto, para que sacasen a los hijos de Israel de la tierra de Egipto.

14 Estos son los jefes de las familias de sus padres: Los hijos de Rubén, el primogénito de Israel: Hanoc, Falú, Hezrón y Carmi; estas son las familias de Rubén. 15 Los hijos de Simeón: Jemuel, Jamín, Ohad, Jaquín, Zohar, y Saúl hijo de una cananea. Estas son las familias de Simeón. 16 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Leví por sus linajes: Gersón, Coat y Merari. Y los años de la vida de Leví fueron ciento treinta y siete años. 17 Los hijos de Gersón: Libni y Simei, por sus familias. 18 Y los hijos de Coat: Amram, Izhar, Hebrón y Uziel. Y los años de la vida de Coat fueron ciento treinta y tres años. 19 Y los hijos de Merari: Mahli y Musi. Estas son las familias de Leví por sus linajes.(B) 20 Y Amram tomó por mujer a Jocabed su tía, la cual dio a luz a Aarón y a Moisés. Y los años de la vida de Amram fueron ciento treinta y siete años. 21 Los hijos de Izhar: Coré, Nefeg y Zicri. 22 Y los hijos de Uziel: Misael, Elzafán y Sitri. 23 Y tomó Aarón por mujer a Elisabet hija de Aminadab, hermana de Naasón; la cual dio a luz a Nadab, Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar. 24 Los hijos de Coré: Asir, Elcana y Abiasaf. Estas son las familias de los coreítas. 25 Y Eleazar hijo de Aarón tomó para sí mujer de las hijas de Futiel, la cual dio a luz a Finees. Y estos son los jefes de los padres de los levitas por sus familias.

26 Este es aquel Aarón y aquel Moisés, a los cuales Jehová dijo: Sacad a los hijos de Israel de la tierra de Egipto por sus ejércitos. 27 Estos son los que hablaron a Faraón rey de Egipto, para sacar de Egipto a los hijos de Israel. Moisés y Aarón fueron estos.

28 Cuando Jehová habló a Moisés en la tierra de Egipto, 29 entonces Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo: Yo soy JEHOVÁ; di a Faraón rey de Egipto todas las cosas que yo te digo a ti. 30 Y Moisés respondió delante de Jehová: He aquí, yo soy torpe de labios; ¿cómo, pues, me ha de oír Faraón?

7 Jehová dijo a Moisés: Mira, yo te he constituido dios para Faraón, y tu hermano Aarón será tu profeta. 2 Tú dirás todas las cosas que yo te mande, y Aarón tu hermano hablará a Faraón, para que deje ir de su tierra a los hijos de Israel. 3 Y yo endureceré el corazón de Faraón, y multiplicaré en la tierra de Egipto mis señales y mis maravillas.(C) 4 Y Faraón no os oirá; mas yo pondré mi mano sobre Egipto, y sacaré a mis ejércitos, mi pueblo, los hijos de Israel, de la tierra de Egipto, con grandes juicios. 5 Y sabrán los egipcios que yo soy Jehová, cuando extienda mi mano sobre Egipto, y saque a los hijos de Israel de en medio de ellos. 6 E hizo Moisés y Aarón como Jehová les mandó; así lo hicieron. 7 Era Moisés de edad de ochenta años, y Aarón de edad de ochenta y tres, cuando hablaron a Faraón.

La vara de Aarón

8 Habló Jehová a Moisés y a Aarón, diciendo: 9 Si Faraón os respondiere diciendo: Mostrad milagro; dirás a Aarón: Toma tu vara, y échala delante de Faraón, para que se haga culebra. 10 Vinieron, pues, Moisés y Aarón a Faraón, e hicieron como Jehová lo había mandado. Y echó Aarón su vara delante de Faraón y de sus siervos, y se hizo culebra. 11 Entonces llamó también Faraón sabios y hechiceros, e hicieron también lo mismo los hechiceros de Egipto con sus encantamientos; 12 pues echó cada uno su vara, las cuales se volvieron culebras; mas la vara de Aarón devoró las varas de ellos. 13 Y el corazón de Faraón se endureció, y no los escuchó, como Jehová lo había dicho.

La plaga de sangre

14 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: El corazón de Faraón está endurecido, y no quiere dejar ir al pueblo. 15 Ve por la mañana a Faraón, he aquí que él sale al río; y tú ponte a la ribera delante de él, y toma en tu mano la vara que se volvió culebra, 16 y dile: Jehová el Dios de los hebreos me ha enviado a ti, diciendo: Deja ir a mi pueblo, para que me sirva en el desierto; y he aquí que hasta ahora no has querido oír. 17 Así ha dicho Jehová: En esto conocerás que yo soy Jehová: he aquí, yo golpearé con la vara que tengo en mi mano el agua que está en el río, y se convertirá en sangre.(D) 18 Y los peces que hay en el río morirán, y hederá el río, y los egipcios tendrán asco de beber el agua del río. 19 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: Di a Aarón: Toma tu vara, y extiende tu mano sobre las aguas de Egipto, sobre sus ríos, sobre sus arroyos y sobre sus estanques, y sobre todos sus depósitos de aguas, para que se conviertan en sangre, y haya sangre por toda la región de Egipto, así en los vasos de madera como en los de piedra.

20 Y Moisés y Aarón hicieron como Jehová lo mandó; y alzando la vara golpeó las aguas que había en el río, en presencia de Faraón y de sus siervos; y todas las aguas que había en el río se convirtieron en sangre. 21 Asimismo los peces que había en el río murieron; y el río se corrompió, tanto que los egipcios no podían beber de él. Y hubo sangre por toda la tierra de Egipto. 22 Y los hechiceros de Egipto hicieron lo mismo con sus encantamientos; y el corazón de Faraón se endureció, y no los escuchó; como Jehová lo había dicho. 23 Y Faraón se volvió y fue a su casa, y no dio atención tampoco a esto. 24 Y en todo Egipto hicieron pozos alrededor del río para beber, porque no podían beber de las aguas del río. 25 Y se cumplieron siete días después que Jehová hirió el río.

La plaga de ranas

8 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: Entra a la presencia de Faraón y dile: Jehová ha dicho así: Deja ir a mi pueblo, para que me sirva. 2 Y si no lo quisieres dejar ir, he aquí yo castigaré con ranas todos tus territorios. 3 Y el río criará ranas, las cuales subirán y entrarán en tu casa, en la cámara donde duermes, y sobre tu cama, y en las casas de tus siervos, en tu pueblo, en tus hornos y en tus artesas. 4 Y las ranas subirán sobre ti, sobre tu pueblo, y sobre todos tus siervos. 5 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: Di a Aarón: Extiende tu mano con tu vara sobre los ríos, arroyos y estanques, para que haga subir ranas sobre la tierra de Egipto. 6 Entonces Aarón extendió su mano sobre las aguas de Egipto, y subieron ranas que cubrieron la tierra de Egipto. 7 Y los hechiceros hicieron lo mismo con sus encantamientos, e hicieron venir ranas sobre la tierra de Egipto.

8 Entonces Faraón llamó a Moisés y a Aarón, y les dijo: Orad a Jehová para que quite las ranas de mí y de mi pueblo, y dejaré ir a tu pueblo para que ofrezca sacrificios a Jehová. 9 Y dijo Moisés a Faraón: Dígnate indicarme cuándo debo orar por ti, por tus siervos y por tu pueblo, para que las ranas sean quitadas de ti y de tus casas, y que solamente queden en el río. 10 Y él dijo: Mañana. Y Moisés respondió: Se hará conforme a tu palabra, para que conozcas que no hay como Jehová nuestro Dios. 11 Y las ranas se irán de ti, y de tus casas, de tus siervos y de tu pueblo, y solamente quedarán en el río. 12 Entonces salieron Moisés y Aarón de la presencia de Faraón. Y clamó Moisés a Jehová tocante a las ranas que había mandado a Faraón. 13 E hizo Jehová conforme a la palabra de Moisés, y murieron las ranas de las casas, de los cortijos y de los campos. 14 Y las juntaron en montones, y apestaba la tierra. 15 Pero viendo Faraón que le habían dado reposo, endureció su corazón y no los escuchó, como Jehová lo había dicho.

La plaga de piojos

16 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: Di a Aarón: Extiende tu vara y golpea el polvo de la tierra, para que se vuelva piojos por todo el país de Egipto. 17 Y ellos lo hicieron así; y Aarón extendió su mano con su vara, y golpeó el polvo de la tierra, el cual se volvió piojos, así en los hombres como en las bestias; todo el polvo de la tierra se volvió piojos en todo el país de Egipto. 18 Y los hechiceros hicieron así también, para sacar piojos con sus encantamientos; pero no pudieron. Y hubo piojos tanto en los hombres como en las bestias. 19 Entonces los hechiceros dijeron a Faraón: Dedo de Dios es este. Mas el corazón de Faraón se endureció, y no los escuchó, como Jehová lo había dicho.

La plaga de moscas

20 Jehová dijo a Moisés: Levántate de mañana y ponte delante de Faraón, he aquí él sale al río; y dile: Jehová ha dicho así: Deja ir a mi pueblo, para que me sirva. 21 Porque si no dejas ir a mi pueblo, he aquí yo enviaré sobre ti, sobre tus siervos, sobre tu pueblo y sobre tus casas toda clase de moscas; y las casas de los egipcios se llenarán de toda clase de moscas, y asimismo la tierra donde ellos estén. 22 Y aquel día yo apartaré la tierra de Gosén, en la cual habita mi pueblo, para que ninguna clase de moscas haya en ella, a fin de que sepas que yo soy Jehová en medio de la tierra. 23 Y yo pondré redención entre mi pueblo y el tuyo. Mañana será esta señal. 24 Y Jehová lo hizo así, y vino toda clase de moscas molestísimas sobre la casa de Faraón, sobre las casas de sus siervos, y sobre todo el país de Egipto; y la tierra fue corrompida a causa de ellas.

25 Entonces Faraón llamó a Moisés y a Aarón, y les dijo: Andad, ofreced sacrificio a vuestro Dios en la tierra. 26 Y Moisés respondió: No conviene que hagamos así, porque ofreceríamos a Jehová nuestro Dios la abominación de los egipcios. He aquí, si sacrificáramos la abominación de los egipcios delante de ellos, ¿no nos apedrearían? 27 Camino de tres días iremos por el desierto, y ofreceremos sacrificios a Jehová nuestro Dios, como él nos dirá. 28 Dijo Faraón: Yo os dejaré ir para que ofrezcáis sacrificios a Jehová vuestro Dios en el desierto, con tal que no vayáis más lejos; orad por mí. 29 Y respondió Moisés: He aquí, al salir yo de tu presencia, rogaré a Jehová que las diversas clases de moscas se vayan de Faraón, y de sus siervos, y de su pueblo mañana; con tal que Faraón no falte más, no dejando ir al pueblo a dar sacrificio a Jehová. 30 Entonces Moisés salió de la presencia de Faraón, y oró a Jehová. 31 Y Jehová hizo conforme a la palabra de Moisés, y quitó todas aquellas moscas de Faraón, de sus siervos y de su pueblo, sin que quedara una. 32 Mas Faraón endureció aun esta vez su corazón, y no dejó ir al pueblo.

La plaga en el ganado

9 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: Entra a la presencia de Faraón, y dile: Jehová, el Dios de los hebreos, dice así: Deja ir a mi pueblo, para que me sirva. 2 Porque si no lo quieres dejar ir, y lo detienes aún, 3 he aquí la mano de Jehová estará sobre tus ganados que están en el campo, caballos, asnos, camellos, vacas y ovejas, con plaga gravísima. 4 Y Jehová hará separación entre los ganados de Israel y los de Egipto, de modo que nada muera de todo lo de los hijos de Israel. 5 Y Jehová fijó plazo, diciendo: Mañana hará Jehová esta cosa en la tierra. 6 Al día siguiente Jehová hizo aquello, y murió todo el ganado de Egipto; mas del ganado de los hijos de Israel no murió uno. 7 Entonces Faraón envió, y he aquí que del ganado de los hijos de Israel no había muerto uno. Mas el corazón de Faraón se endureció, y no dejó ir al pueblo.

La plaga de úlceras

8 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: Tomad puñados de ceniza de un horno, y la esparcirá Moisés hacia el cielo delante de Faraón; 9 y vendrá a ser polvo sobre toda la tierra de Egipto, y producirá sarpullido con úlceras en los hombres y en las bestias, por todo el país de Egipto. 10 Y tomaron ceniza del horno, y se pusieron delante de Faraón, y la esparció Moisés hacia el cielo; y hubo sarpullido que produjo úlceras(E) tanto en los hombres como en las bestias. 11 Y los hechiceros no podían estar delante de Moisés a causa del sarpullido, porque hubo sarpullido en los hechiceros y en todos los egipcios. 12 Pero Jehová endureció el corazón de Faraón, y no los oyó, como Jehová lo había dicho a Moisés.

La plaga de granizo

13 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: Levántate de mañana, y ponte delante de Faraón, y dile: Jehová, el Dios de los hebreos, dice así: Deja ir a mi pueblo, para que me sirva. 14 Porque yo enviaré esta vez todas mis plagas a tu corazón, sobre tus siervos y sobre tu pueblo, para que entiendas que no hay otro como yo en toda la tierra. 15 Porque ahora yo extenderé mi mano para herirte a ti y a tu pueblo de plaga, y serás quitado de la tierra. 16 Y a la verdad yo te he puesto para mostrar en ti mi poder, y para que mi nombre sea anunciado en toda la tierra.(F) 17 ¿Todavía te ensoberbeces contra mi pueblo, para no dejarlos ir? 18 He aquí que mañana a estas horas yo haré llover granizo muy pesado, cual nunca hubo en Egipto, desde el día que se fundó hasta ahora. 19 Envía, pues, a recoger tu ganado, y todo lo que tienes en el campo; porque todo hombre o animal que se halle en el campo, y no sea recogido a casa, el granizo caerá sobre él, y morirá. 20 De los siervos de Faraón, el que tuvo temor de la palabra de Jehová hizo huir sus criados y su ganado a casa; 21 mas el que no puso en su corazón la palabra de Jehová, dejó sus criados y sus ganados en el campo.

22 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: Extiende tu mano hacia el cielo, para que venga granizo en toda la tierra de Egipto sobre los hombres, y sobre las bestias, y sobre toda la hierba del campo en el país de Egipto. 23 Y Moisés extendió su vara hacia el cielo, y Jehová hizo tronar y granizar, y el fuego se descargó sobre la tierra; y Jehová hizo llover granizo sobre la tierra de Egipto. 24 Hubo, pues, granizo, y fuego(G) mezclado con el granizo, tan grande, cual nunca hubo en toda la tierra de Egipto desde que fue habitada. 25 Y aquel granizo hirió en toda la tierra de Egipto todo lo que estaba en el campo, así hombres como bestias; asimismo destrozó el granizo toda la hierba del campo, y desgajó todos los árboles del país. 26 Solamente en la tierra de Gosén, donde estaban los hijos de Israel, no hubo granizo.

27 Entonces Faraón envió a llamar a Moisés y a Aarón, y les dijo: He pecado esta vez; Jehová es justo, y yo y mi pueblo impíos. 28 Orad a Jehová para que cesen los truenos de Dios y el granizo, y yo os dejaré ir, y no os detendréis más. 29 Y le respondió Moisés: Tan pronto salga yo de la ciudad, extenderé mis manos a Jehová, y los truenos cesarán, y no habrá más granizo; para que sepas que de Jehová es la tierra. 30 Pero yo sé que ni tú ni tus siervos temeréis todavía la presencia de Jehová Dios. 31 El lino, pues, y la cebada fueron destrozados, porque la cebada estaba ya espigada, y el lino en caña. 32 Mas el trigo y el centeno no fueron destrozados, porque eran tardíos. 33 Y salido Moisés de la presencia de Faraón, fuera de la ciudad, extendió sus manos a Jehová, y cesaron los truenos y el granizo, y la lluvia no cayó más sobre la tierra. 34 Y viendo Faraón que la lluvia había cesado, y el granizo y los truenos, se obstinó en pecar, y endurecieron su corazón él y sus siervos. 35 Y el corazón de Faraón se endureció, y no dejó ir a los hijos de Israel, como Jehová lo había dicho por medio de Moisés.

La plaga de langostas

10 Jehová dijo a Moisés: Entra a la presencia de Faraón; porque yo he endurecido su corazón, y el corazón de sus siervos, para mostrar entre ellos estas mis señales, 2 y para que cuentes a tus hijos y a tus nietos las cosas que yo hice en Egipto, y mis señales que hice entre ellos; para que sepáis que yo soy Jehová. 3 Entonces vinieron Moisés y Aarón a Faraón, y le dijeron: Jehová el Dios de los hebreos ha dicho así: ¿Hasta cuándo no querrás humillarte delante de mí? Deja ir a mi pueblo, para que me sirva. 4 Y si aún rehúsas dejarlo ir, he aquí que mañana yo traeré sobre tu territorio la langosta, 5 la cual cubrirá la faz de la tierra, de modo que no pueda verse la tierra; y ella comerá lo que escapó, lo que os quedó del granizo; comerá asimismo todo árbol que os fructifica en el campo. 6 Y llenará tus casas, y las casas de todos tus siervos, y las casas de todos los egipcios, cual nunca vieron tus padres ni tus abuelos, desde que ellos fueron sobre la tierra hasta hoy. Y se volvió y salió de delante de Faraón. 7 Entonces los siervos de Faraón le dijeron: ¿Hasta cuándo será este hombre un lazo para nosotros? Deja ir a estos hombres, para que sirvan a Jehová su Dios. ¿Acaso no sabes todavía que Egipto está ya destruido? 8 Y Moisés y Aarón volvieron a ser llamados ante Faraón, el cual les dijo: Andad, servid a Jehová vuestro Dios. ¿Quiénes son los que han de ir? 9 Moisés respondió: Hemos de ir con nuestros niños y con nuestros viejos, con nuestros hijos y con nuestras hijas; con nuestras ovejas y con nuestras vacas hemos de ir; porque es nuestra fiesta solemne para Jehová. 10 Y él les dijo: ¡Así sea Jehová con vosotros! ¿Cómo os voy a dejar ir a vosotros y a vuestros niños? ¡Mirad cómo el mal está delante de vuestro rostro! 11 No será así; id ahora vosotros los varones, y servid a Jehová, pues esto es lo que vosotros pedisteis. Y los echaron de la presencia de Faraón.

12 Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: Extiende tu mano sobre la tierra de Egipto para traer la langosta, a fin de que suba sobre el país de Egipto, y consuma todo lo que el granizo dejó. 13 Y extendió Moisés su vara sobre la tierra de Egipto, y Jehová trajo un viento oriental sobre el país todo aquel día y toda aquella noche; y al venir la mañana el viento oriental trajo la langosta. 14 Y subió la langosta sobre toda la tierra de Egipto, y se asentó en todo el país de Egipto en tan gran cantidad como no la hubo antes ni la habrá después; 15 y cubrió la faz de todo el país, y oscureció la tierra;(H) y consumió toda la hierba de la tierra, y todo el fruto de los árboles que había dejado el granizo; no quedó cosa verde en árboles ni en hierba del campo, en toda la tierra de Egipto.

16 Entonces Faraón se apresuró a llamar a Moisés y a Aarón, y dijo: He pecado contra Jehová vuestro Dios, y contra vosotros. 17 Mas os ruego ahora que perdonéis mi pecado solamente esta vez, y que oréis a Jehová vuestro Dios que quite de mí al menos esta plaga mortal. 18 Y salió Moisés de delante de Faraón, y oró a Jehová. 19 Entonces Jehová trajo un fortísimo viento occidental, y quitó la langosta y la arrojó en el Mar Rojo; ni una langosta quedó en todo el país de Egipto. 20 Pero Jehová endureció el corazón de Faraón, y este no dejó ir a los hijos de Israel.

La plaga de tinieblas

21 Jehová dijo a Moisés: Extiende tu mano hacia el cielo, para que haya tinieblas(I) sobre la tierra de Egipto, tanto que cualquiera las palpe. 22 Y extendió Moisés su mano hacia el cielo, y hubo densas tinieblas sobre toda la tierra de Egipto, por tres días. 23 Ninguno vio a su prójimo, ni nadie se levantó de su lugar en tres días; mas todos los hijos de Israel tenían luz en sus habitaciones. 24 Entonces Faraón hizo llamar a Moisés, y dijo: Id, servid a Jehová; solamente queden vuestras ovejas y vuestras vacas; vayan también vuestros niños con vosotros. 25 Y Moisés respondió: Tú también nos darás sacrificios y holocaustos que sacrifiquemos para Jehová nuestro Dios. 26 Nuestros ganados irán también con nosotros; no quedará ni una pezuña; porque de ellos hemos de tomar para servir a Jehová nuestro Dios, y no sabemos con qué hemos de servir a Jehová hasta que lleguemos allá. 27 Pero Jehová endureció el corazón de Faraón, y no quiso dejarlos ir. 28 Y le dijo Faraón: Retírate de mí; guárdate que no veas más mi rostro, porque en cualquier día que vieres mi rostro, morirás. 29 Y Moisés respondió: Bien has dicho; no veré más tu rostro.

Anunciada la muerte de los primogénitos

11 Jehová dijo a Moisés: Una plaga traeré aún sobre Faraón y sobre Egipto, después de la cual él os dejará ir de aquí; y seguramente os echará de aquí del todo. 2 Habla ahora al pueblo, y que cada uno pida a su vecino, y cada una a su vecina, alhajas de plata y de oro. 3 Y Jehová dio gracia al pueblo en los ojos de los egipcios. También Moisés era tenido por gran varón en la tierra de Egipto, a los ojos de los siervos de Faraón, y a los ojos del pueblo. 4 Dijo, pues, Moisés: Jehová ha dicho así: A la medianoche yo saldré por en medio de Egipto, 5 y morirá todo primogénito en tierra de Egipto, desde el primogénito de Faraón que se sienta en su trono, hasta el primogénito de la sierva que está tras el molino, y todo primogénito de las bestias. 6 Y habrá gran clamor por toda la tierra de Egipto, cual nunca hubo, ni jamás habrá. 7 Pero contra todos los hijos de Israel, desde el hombre hasta la bestia, ni un perro moverá su lengua, para que sepáis que Jehová hace diferencia entre los egipcios y los israelitas. 8 Y descenderán a mí todos estos tus siervos, e inclinados delante de mí dirán: Vete, tú y todo el pueblo que está debajo de ti; y después de esto yo saldré. Y salió muy enojado de la presencia de Faraón. 9 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: Faraón no os oirá, para que mis maravillas se multipliquen en la tierra de Egipto.

10 Y Moisés y Aarón hicieron todos estos prodigios delante de Faraón; pues Jehová había endurecido el corazón de Faraón, y no envió a los hijos de Israel fuera de su país.
