The New Stone Tablets

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,(A) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,(B) which you broke.(C) 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.(D) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;(E) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”

4 So Moses chiseled(F) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.(G) 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(H) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.(I) 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate(J) and gracious God, slow to anger,(K) abounding in love(L) and faithfulness,(M) 7 maintaining love to thousands,(N) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.(O) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;(P) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”(Q)

8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor(R) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.(S) Although this is a stiff-necked(T) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,(U) and take us as your inheritance.”(V)

10 Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant(W) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders(X) never before done in any nation in all the world.(Y) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. 11 Obey what I command(Z) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.(AA) 12 Be careful not to make a treaty(AB) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare(AC) among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.[a](AD) 14 Do not worship any other god,(AE) for the Lord, whose name(AF) is Jealous, is a jealous God.(AG)

15 “Be careful not to make a treaty(AH) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute(AI) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.(AJ) 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives(AK) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,(AL) they will lead your sons to do the same.

17 “Do not make any idols.(AM)

18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(AN) For seven days eat bread made without yeast,(AO) as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,(AP) for in that month you came out of Egypt.

19 “The first offspring(AQ) of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(AR) Redeem all your firstborn sons.(AS)

“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.(AT)

21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest;(AU) even during the plowing season and harvest(AV) you must rest.

22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits(AW) of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering(AX) at the turn of the year.[b] 23 Three times(AY) a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations(AZ) before you and enlarge your territory,(BA) and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.

25 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast,(BB) and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning.(BC)

26 “Bring the best of the firstfruits(BD) of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.

“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”(BE)

27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(BF) down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant(BG) with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights(BH) without eating bread or drinking water.(BI) And he wrote on the tablets(BJ) the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.(BK)

The Radiant Face of Moses

29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai(BL) with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands,(BM) he was not aware that his face was radiant(BN) because he had spoken with the Lord. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community(BO) came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands(BP) the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.

33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil(BQ) over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant.(BR) Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.

Moses Makes New Tablets(A)

34 And the Lord said to Moses, (B)“Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and (C)I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke. 2 So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there (D)on the top of the mountain. 3 And no man shall (E)come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let neither flocks nor herds feed before that mountain.”

4 So he cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him; and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone.

5 Now the Lord descended in the (F)cloud and stood with him there, and (G)proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord (H)God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in (I)goodness and (J)truth, 7 (K)keeping mercy for thousands, (L)forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, (M)by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”

8 So Moses made haste and (N)bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. 9 Then he said, “If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, (O)let my Lord, I pray, go among us, even though we are a (P)stiff-necked[a] people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as (Q)Your inheritance.”

The Covenant Renewed(R)

10 And He said: “Behold, (S)I make a covenant. Before all your people I will (T)do [b]marvels such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord. For it is (U)an awesome thing that I will do with you. 11 (V)Observe what I command you this day. Behold, (W)I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 12 (X)Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. 13 But you shall (Y)destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and (Z)cut down their wooden images 14 (for you shall worship (AA)no other god, for the Lord, whose (AB)name is Jealous, is a (AC)jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they (AD)play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them (AE)invites you and you (AF)eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of (AG)his daughters for your sons, and his daughters (AH)play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods.

17 (AI)“You shall make no molded gods for yourselves.

18 “The Feast of (AJ)Unleavened Bread you shall keep. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, in the appointed time of the month of Abib; for in the (AK)month of Abib you came out from Egypt.

19 (AL)“All [c]that open the womb are Mine, and every male firstborn among your livestock, whether ox or sheep. 20 But (AM)the firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb. And if you will not redeem him, then you shall break his neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem.

“And none shall appear before Me (AN)empty-handed.

21 (AO)“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.

22 “And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end.

23 (AP)“Three times in the year all your men shall appear before the Lord, the Lord God of Israel. 24 For I will (AQ)cast out the nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither will any man covet your land when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.

25 “You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven, (AR)nor shall the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover be left until morning.

26 (AS)“The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write (AT)these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 (AU)So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And (AV)He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the [d]Ten Commandments.

The Shining Face of Moses

29 Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the (AW)two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that (AX)the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. 30 So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him; and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterward all the children of Israel came near, (AY)and he gave them as commandments all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put (AZ)a veil on his face. 34 But (BA)whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, he would take the veil off until he came out; and he would come out and speak to the children of Israel whatever he had been commanded. 35 And whenever the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone, then Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with Him.

34 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Labra dos tablas de piedra semejantes a las primeras que rompiste. Voy a escribir en ellas las mismas palabras que estaban escritas en las primeras. 2 Prepárate para subir mañana a la cumbre del monte Sinaí y presentarte allí ante mí. 3 Nadie debe acompañarte ni debe verse a nadie en ninguna parte del monte. Ni siquiera las ovejas y las vacas deben pastar frente al monte».

4 Moisés labró dos tablas de piedra semejantes a las primeras y muy de mañana las llevó en sus manos al monte Sinaí, como se lo había ordenado el Señor. 5 El Señor descendió en la nube y se puso junto a Moisés. Luego le dio a conocer su nombre: 6 pasando delante de él, proclamó:

—El Señor, el Señor, Dios compasivo y misericordioso, lento para la ira y grande en amor y fidelidad, 7 que mantiene su amor hasta mil generaciones después y que perdona la maldad, la rebelión y el pecado; pero no tendrá por inocente al culpable, sino que castiga la maldad de los padres en los hijos hasta la tercera y cuarta generación.

8 Enseguida Moisés se postró en tierra y adoró al Señor. 9 Y dijo:

—Señor, si realmente cuento con tu favor, ven y quédate entre nosotros. Reconozco que este es un pueblo terco, pero perdona nuestra iniquidad y nuestro pecado, y adóptanos como tu herencia.

El nuevo pacto

10 —Mira el pacto que hago ahora —respondió el Señor—. A la vista de todo tu pueblo haré maravillas que ante ninguna nación del mundo han sido realizadas. El pueblo en medio del cual vives verá las imponentes obras que yo, el Señor, haré por ti. 11 Por lo que a ti toca, cumple con lo que hoy te mando. Echaré de tu presencia a los amorreos, cananeos, hititas, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos. 12 Ten mucho cuidado de no hacer ningún pacto con los habitantes de la tierra que vas a ocupar, pues de lo contrario serán para ti una trampa. 13 Derriba sus altares, haz pedazos sus piedras sagradas y sus imágenes de la diosa Aserá. 14 No adores a otros dioses, porque el Señor es muy celoso. Su nombre es Dios celoso.

15 »No hagas ningún pacto con los habitantes de esta tierra, porque se prostituyen por ir tras sus dioses y, cuando ofrezcan sacrificios a esos dioses, te invitarán a participar de ellos. 16 Y si casas a tu hijo con una de sus mujeres, cuando ella se prostituya por ir tras sus dioses, inducirá a tu hijo a hacer lo mismo.

17 »No te hagas ídolos de metal fundido.

18 »Celebra la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura y come de ese pan durante siete días, como te lo he ordenado. Celebra esa fiesta en el mes de aviv, que es la fecha señalada, pues en ese mes saliste de Egipto.

19 »Todo hijo primogénito me pertenece, incluyendo las primeras crías de tus vacas y de tus ovejas. 20 Deberás rescatar a todos tus primogénitos. Al asno primogénito podrás rescatarlo a cambio de un cordero; pero si no lo rescatas, tendrás que romperle el cuello.

»Nadie se presentará ante mí con las manos vacías.

21 »Trabaja durante seis días, pero descansa el séptimo. Ese día deberás descansar, incluso en el tiempo de arar y cosechar.

22 »Celebra con las primicias de la cosecha de trigo la fiesta de las Semanas y también la fiesta de la cosecha de fin de año.[a] 23 Todos tus varones deberán presentarse ante mí, su Señor y Dios, el Dios de Israel, tres veces al año. 24 Yo echaré de tu presencia a las naciones y ensancharé tu territorio. Cuando vengan tres veces al año ante mí, su Señor y Dios, nadie codiciará tu tierra.

25 »Cuando me ofrezcas un animal, no mezcles con levadura su sangre. Del animal que se ofrece en la fiesta de la Pascua no debe quedar nada para la mañana siguiente.

26 »Llevarás a la casa del Señor tu Dios lo mejor de tus primicias.

»No cocerás ningún cabrito en la leche de su madre».

27 El Señor dijo a Moisés:

—Pon estas palabras por escrito, pues en ellas se basa el pacto que ahora hago contigo y con Israel.

28 Y Moisés se quedó en el monte con el Señor cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, sin comer ni beber nada. Allí, en las tablas, escribió los términos del pacto, es decir, los diez mandamientos.

El rostro resplandeciente de Moisés

29 Cuando Moisés descendió del monte Sinaí, traía en sus manos las dos tablas del pacto. Pero no sabía que, por haberle hablado el Señor, de su rostro salía un haz de luz. 30 Al ver Aarón y todos los israelitas el rostro resplandeciente de Moisés, tuvieron miedo de acercársele; 31 pero Moisés llamó a Aarón y a todos los jefes y ellos regresaron para hablar con él. 32 Luego se acercaron todos los israelitas y Moisés ordenó acatar todo lo que el Señor le había dicho en el monte Sinaí.

33 En cuanto Moisés terminó de hablar con ellos, se cubrió el rostro con un velo. 34 Siempre que entraba a la presencia del Señor para hablar con él, se quitaba el velo hasta que salía. Al salir, comunicaba a los israelitas lo que el Señor le había ordenado decir. 35 Y como los israelitas veían que su rostro resplandecía, Moisés se cubría de nuevo el rostro, hasta que entraba a hablar otra vez con el Señor.

Yahweh Cuts a Covenant with Israel

10 Then [g]God said, “Behold, (P)I am going to cut a covenant. Before all your people (Q)I will do wondrous deeds which have not been created in all the earth nor among any of the nations; and all the people [h]among whom you live will see the working of Yahweh, for it is a fearful thing that I am going to do with you.

11 “[i]Be sure to keep what I am commanding you this day: behold, (R)I am going to drive out the Amorite before you, and the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 (S)Beware lest you cut a covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, lest it become a snare in your midst. 13 (T)But rather, you are to tear down their altars and shatter their sacred pillars and cut down their [j](U)Asherim 14 —for (V)you shall not worship any other god, for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God— 15 lest you cut a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and (W)sacrifice to their gods, and one of them (X)invite you [k]to eat of his sacrifice, 16 and (Y)you take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and cause your sons also to play the harlot with their gods. 17 (Z)You shall make for yourself no molten gods.

25 “(AL)You shall not [o]offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread, (AM)and the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover shall not [p]be left over until morning.

26 “You shall bring (AN)the very first of the first fruits of your ground into the house of Yahweh your God.

“You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

27 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “(AO)Write [q]down these words, for in accordance with these words I have cut (AP)a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with Yahweh (AQ)forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. So Moses would return the veil over his face until he went in to speak with Him.
