The Firstborn Consecrated
13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 (A)“Consecrate[a] to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.”
The Feast of Unleavened Bread(B)
3 And Moses said to the people: (C)“Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of [b]bondage; for (D)by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. (E)No leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 (F)On this day you are going out, in the month Abib. 5 And it shall be, when the Lord (G)brings you into the (H)land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, which He (I)swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, (J)that you shall keep this service in this month. 6 (K)Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And (L)no leavened bread shall be seen among you, nor shall leaven be seen among you in all your quarters. 8 And you shall (M)tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.’ 9 It shall be as (N)a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. 10 (O)You shall therefore keep this [c]ordinance in its season from year to year.
The Law of the Firstborn
11 “And it shall be, when the Lord (P)brings you into the land of the (Q)Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 (R)that you shall [d]set apart to the Lord all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the Lord’s. 13 But (S)every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And all the firstborn of man among your sons (T)you shall redeem. 14 (U)So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ that you shall say to him, (V)‘By strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that (W)the Lord killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 It shall be as (X)a sign on your hand and as frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt.”
The Wilderness Way(Y)
17 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people (Z)change their minds when they see war, and (AA)return to Egypt.” 18 So God (AB)led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.
19 And Moses took the (AC)bones of (AD)Joseph with him, for he had placed the children of Israel under solemn oath, saying, (AE)“God will surely [e]visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”
20 So (AF)they took their journey from (AG)Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness. 21 And (AH)the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.

The Law of the Firstborn
13 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Give every firstborn male to me. Every firstborn male among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”
3 Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, the day you left Egypt. You were slaves in that land, but the Lord with his great power brought you out of it. You must not eat bread made with yeast. 4 Today, in the month of Abib, you are leaving Egypt. 5 The Lord will lead you to the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites. This is the land he promised your ancestors he would give you, a fertile land. There you must celebrate this feast during the first month of every year. 6 For seven days you must eat bread made without yeast, and on the seventh day there will be a feast to honor the Lord. 7 So for seven days you must not eat any bread made with yeast. There must be no bread made with yeast anywhere in your land. 8 On that day you should tell your son: ‘We are having this feast because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 This feast will help you remember, like a mark on your hand or a reminder on your forehead. This feast will remind you to speak the Lord’s teachings, because the Lord used his great power to bring you out of Egypt. 10 So celebrate this feast every year at the right time.
11 “And when the Lord takes you into the land of the Canaanites, the land he promised to give you and your ancestors, 12 you must give him every firstborn male. Also every firstborn male animal must be given to the Lord. 13 Buy back every firstborn donkey by offering a lamb. But if you don’t want to buy the donkey back, then break its neck. You must buy back from the Lord every firstborn of your sons.
14 “From now on when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ you will answer, ‘With his great power, the Lord brought us out from Egypt, the land where we were slaves. 15 The king of Egypt was stubborn and refused to let us leave. But the Lord killed every firstborn male in Egypt, both human and animal. That is why I sacrifice every firstborn male animal to the Lord, and that is why I buy back each of my firstborn sons from the Lord.’ 16 This feast is like a mark on your hand and a reminder on your forehead to help you remember that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his great power.”
The Way Out of Egypt
17 When the king sent the people out of Egypt, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was the shortest way. God said, “If they have to fight, they might change their minds and go back to Egypt.” 18 So God led them through the desert toward the Red Sea. The Israelites were dressed for fighting when they left the land of Egypt.
19 Moses carried the bones of Joseph with him, because before Joseph died, he had made the Israelites promise to do this. He had said, “When God saves you, remember to carry my bones with you out of Egypt.”
20 The Israelites left Succoth and camped at Etham, on the edge of the desert. 21 The Lord showed them the way; during the day he went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud, and during the night he was in a pillar of fire to give them light. In this way they could travel during the day or night. 22 The pillar of cloud was always with them during the day, and the pillar of fire was always with them at night.

13 El Señor habló con Moisés, y le dijo:
2 «Conságrame todo primogénito. Todo el que abra matriz entre los hijos de Israel, lo mismo de los hombres como de los animales, me pertenece.»(A)
3 Moisés le dijo al pueblo:
«Tengan presente este día, en que han sido liberados de la esclavitud de Egipto. El Señor los ha sacado de aquí con mano fuerte, Por lo tanto, no deben comer pan leudado. 4 Ustedes salen hoy en el mes de Aviv. 5 Y en este mismo mes harán esta celebración, cuando ya el Señor los haya introducido en la tierra que destila leche y miel, es decir, en la tierra de los cananeos, hititas, amorreos, jivitas y jebuseos, la cual prometió a los padres de ustedes que les daría. 6 Durante siete días comerán pan sin levadura, y el séptimo día será de fiesta en honor del Señor. 7 Durante esos siete días se comerán panes sin levadura, y en ninguna parte de su territorio debe verse nada leudado, ni levadura. 8 Cuando llegue ese día, les contarán esto a sus hijos. Les dirán: “Esto se hace por lo que el Señor hizo con nosotros cuando nos sacó de Egipto.” 9 Y será para ustedes como una señal en su mano, y como un recordatorio delante de sus ojos, de que ustedes deben tener en los labios la ley del Señor, pues el Señor los sacó de Egipto con mano fuerte. 10 Por lo tanto, ustedes deben celebrar esta ceremonia cada año, en su momento debido.
11 »Cuando el Señor te haya introducido en la tierra de los cananeos, y ya te la haya entregado, conforme al juramento que a ti y a tus padres les hizo, 12 dedicarás al Señor todo aquel que abra matriz,(B) lo mismo que toda primera cría de tus animales. Todos los machos serán del Señor. 13 A las primeras crías de los asnos las redimirás con un cordero; pero si no los redimes deberás romperles el cuello. También deberás redimir a los primogénito de tus hijos. 14 Y el día de mañana, cuando tus hijos te pregunten: “¿Y esto qué significa?”, les dirás: “Con mano fuerte, el Señor nos sacó de Egipto, donde éramos esclavos. 15 Como el faraón se empecinó en no dejarnos ir, el Señor hirió de muerte a todos los primogénitos que había en Egipto, es decir, tanto a los primogénitos humanos como a las primeras crías de los animales. Por eso yo ofrezco en sacrificio al Señor todo primogénito macho, y redimo al primogénito de mis hijos.” 16 Así que esto te servirá de señal en la mano, y como recordatorio delante de tus ojos, pues el Señor nos sacó de Egipto con mano fuerte.»
La columna de nube y de fuego
17 Cuando el faraón dejó ir a los israelitas, Dios no los llevó por el camino de la tierra de los filisteos, que estaba cerca; porque pensó: «No vaya a ser que haya guerra, y el pueblo se arrepienta de haber salido y se regrese a Egipto.» 18 Más bien, Dios los hizo dar un rodeo por el camino del desierto del Mar Rojo.
De Egipto, los hijos de Israel salieron armados. 19 Moisés, por su parte, se llevó los huesos de José, pues él había hecho que los hijos de Israel se comprometieran con él cuando les dijo: «Ciertamente Dios vendrá a visitarlos. Cuando eso sea, ustedes se llevarán de aquí mis huesos.»(C)
20 Los israelitas partieron de Sucot y acamparon en Etam, que es donde comienza el desierto. 21 Durante el día, el Señor iba delante de ellos y los guiaba mediante una columna de nube; durante la noche, los alumbraba con una columna de fuego. Así podían avanzar de día y de noche, 22 y en ningún momento del día se apartó de ellos la columna de nube, ni tampoco de noche se apartó la columna de fuego.

Consecration of the Firstborn
13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Consecrate to me every firstborn male.(A) The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”
3 Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt,(B) out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand.(C) Eat nothing containing yeast.(D) 4 Today, in the month of Aviv,(E) you are leaving. 5 When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,(F) Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites(G)—the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey(H)—you are to observe this ceremony(I) in this month: 6 For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival(J) to the Lord. 7 Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. 8 On that day tell your son,(K) ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand(L) and a reminder on your forehead(M) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.(N) 10 You must keep this ordinance(O) at the appointed time(P) year after year.
11 “After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites(Q) and gives it to you, as he promised on oath(R) to you and your ancestors,(S) 12 you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord.(T) 13 Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey,(U) but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(V) Redeem(W) every firstborn among your sons.(X)
14 “In days to come, when your son(Y) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.(Z) 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’(AA) 16 And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead(AB) that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”
Crossing the Sea
17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”(AC) 18 So God led(AD) the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea.[a] The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.(AE)
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(AF) with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”[b](AG)
20 After leaving Sukkoth(AH) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(AI) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(AJ) of them in a pillar of cloud(AK) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left(AL) its place in front of the people.
