Gräshoppor täcker landet
10 Då sa Herren till Mose: ”Gå tillbaka till farao! Jag har gjort både honom och hans hovmän hårda, för att jag ska kunna göra dessa tecken mitt ibland dem 2 och för att du ska kunna berätta för dina barn och barnbarn om de stora gärningar jag gjorde bland egypterna och vilka tecken jag gjorde bland dem. Så ska ni inse att jag är Herren.”
3 Mose och Aron gick än en gång till farao och talade med honom: ”Så säger Herren, hebréernas Gud: ’Hur länge tänker du vägra att böja dig för mig? Släpp mitt folk så att de kan tillbe inför mig. 4 Om du fortfarande vägrar att släppa iväg dem, ska jag imorgon bitti sända gräshoppor över ditt land. 5 De ska täcka marken så att man inte kan se den och de ska äta upp allt som blev kvar efter haglet. De ska gnaga av alla träd som växer på era marker. 6 De kommer att fylla alla hus, dina och dina hovmäns hus, ja, alla egypters hus. Något sådant har varken dina fäder eller förfäder sett sedan de bosatte sig i landet.’ ”
Sedan gick Mose därifrån.
7 Faraos hovmän frågade honom: ”Hur länge ska den där mannen få vara en snara för oss? Låt folket gå och tillbe Herren, sin Gud! Märker du inte att hela Egypten håller på att gå under?”
8 Då lät farao hämta tillbaka Mose och Aron. ”Ni får väl gå och tillbe Herren, er Gud, då!” sa han. ”Men vilka är det som ska gå?”
9 ”Vi vill gå allesammans, både unga och gamla”, svarade Mose. ”Vi vill ta med våra söner och döttrar och all vår boskap och våra hjordar, eftersom vi ska fira en högtid till Herrens ära.”
10 ”Ja, nog behöver ni att Herren är med er om ni ska få mig att låta er gå och ta med barnen!” sa farao. ”Det syns att ni har onda tankar! 11 Aldrig i livet! Nej, ni män kan gå och tillbe Herren, för det var ju det ni ville.” Och så körde man ut dem därifrån.
12 Då sa Herren till Mose: ”Räck ut din hand över Egyptens land, så ska gräshoppor komma över hela landet och äta upp allt som haglet lämnade kvar.”
13 Och Mose räckte ut sin stav, och Herren lät en östlig vind blåsa över landet hela dagen och hela natten, och när det blev morgon hade vinden fört med sig gräshopporna. 14 De täckte hela landet och slog ner överallt i Egypten. Det var den värsta gräshoppsinvasionen någonsin och man kommer aldrig att få se något liknande igen. 15 Gräshopporna täckte hela landet, marken var alldeles svart, och de åt upp all växtlighet och all frukt på träden som fanns kvar efter haglet. De lämnade inget grönt kvar, varken på träden eller på marken någonstans i hela Egypten.
16 Då skickade farao ilbud efter Mose och Aron och sa till dem: ”Jag har syndat mot Herren, er Gud, och mot er. 17 Förlåt min synd bara den här gången och be Herren, er Gud, att han tar bort denna dödsplåga från mig.”
18 Mose gick från farao och bad till Herren, 19 och Herren sände en kraftig västanvind som blåste ut alla gräshopporna i Sävhavet[a]. Sedan fanns det inte en enda gräshoppa kvar i hela Egypten. 20 Men Herren gjorde än en gång farao lika orubblig, och han vägrade låta folket gå.
Mörker över landet i tre dagar
21 Då sa Herren till Mose: ”Lyft upp din hand mot himlen, så ska jag sända ett väldigt mörker, som man riktigt kan ta på[b].” 22 Mose lyfte sin hand mot himlen, och det kom ett tjockt mörker över hela Egypten i tre dagar. 23 Folk kunde inte se varandra eller röra sig på tre dagar, men där israeliterna bodde var det ljust.
24 Farao skickade då efter Mose och sa: ”Gå och fira gudstjänst åt Herren, men låt era får och er boskap stanna här. Barnen får ni ta med er.”
25 ”Nej”, sa Mose. ”Du måste låta oss ta med slaktoffer och brännoffer som vi kan offra åt Herren, vår Gud. 26 Vi måste få med oss vår boskap. Inte en klöv ska lämnas kvar. Vi måste offra av vår boskap åt Herren, vår Gud, och vi vet inte vad för slags offer vi ska offra, förrän vi är där.”
27 Men Herren gjorde farao lika hård som förut. Inte heller den här gången lät han dem gå.
28 ”Försvinn härifrån, och låt mig aldrig se dig igen”, sa farao åt Mose. ”Kommer du hit en gång till ska du dö.”
29 ”Du har helt rätt”, sa Mose. ”Du kommer aldrig att se mig igen.”

The Eighth Plague: Locusts(A)
10 Now the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh; (B)for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his servants, (C)that I may show these signs of Mine before him, 2 and that (D)you may tell in the hearing of your son and your son’s son the mighty things I have done in Egypt, and My signs which I have done among them, that you may (E)know that I am the Lord.”
3 So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to (F)humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may (G)serve Me. 4 Or else, if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring (H)locusts into your territory. 5 And they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no one will be able to see the earth; and (I)they shall eat the residue of what is left, which remains to you from the hail, and they shall eat every tree which grows up for you out of the field. 6 They shall (J)fill your houses, the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians—which neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen, since the day that they were on the earth to this day.’ ” And he turned and went out from Pharaoh.
7 Then Pharaoh’s (K)servants said to him, “How long shall this man be (L)a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?”
8 So Moses and Aaron were brought again to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Go, serve the Lord your God. Who are the ones that are going?”
9 And Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old; with our sons and our daughters, with our flocks and our herds we will go, for (M)we must hold a feast to the Lord.”
10 Then he said to them, “The Lord had better be with you when I let you and your little ones go! Beware, for evil is ahead of you. 11 Not so! Go now, you who are men, and serve the Lord, for that is what you desired.” And they were driven (N)out from Pharaoh’s presence.
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, (O)“Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come upon the land of Egypt, and (P)eat every herb of the land—all that the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind on the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And (Q)the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested on all the territory of Egypt. They were very severe; (R)previously there had been no such locusts as they, nor shall there be such after them. 15 For they (S)covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they (T)ate every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. So there remained nothing green on the trees or on the plants of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.
16 Then Pharaoh called (U)for Moses and Aaron in haste, and said, (V)“I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and (W)entreat[a] the Lord your God, that He may take away from me this death only.” 18 So he (X)went out from Pharaoh and entreated the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned a very strong west wind, which took the locusts away and blew them (Y)into the Red Sea. There remained not one locust in all the territory of Egypt. 20 But the Lord (Z)hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.
The Ninth Plague: Darkness
21 Then the Lord said to Moses, (AA)“Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, [b]darkness which may even be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was (AB)thick darkness in all the land of Egypt (AC)three days. 23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. (AD)But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
24 Then Pharaoh called to Moses and (AE)said, “Go, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be kept back. Let your (AF)little ones also go with you.”
25 But Moses said, “You must also give [c]us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God. 26 Our (AG)livestock also shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind. For we must take some of them to serve the Lord our God, and even we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.”
27 But the Lord (AH)hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, (AI)“Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”
29 So Moses said, “You have spoken well. (AJ)I will never see your face again.”

The Locusts
10 The Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. I have made him and his officials stubborn. I did this so that I could show them my powerful miracles. 2 I also did this so that you could tell your children and your grandchildren about the miracles and other wonderful things that I have done in Egypt. Then all of you will know that I am the Lord.”
3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. They told him, “The Lord, the God of the Hebrews,[a] says, ‘How long will you refuse to obey me? Let my people go to worship me! 4 If you refuse to let my people go, then tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country. 5 The locusts will cover the land. There will be so many locusts that you will not be able to see the ground. Anything that was left from the hailstorm will be eaten by the locusts. The locusts will eat all the leaves from every tree in the field. 6 They will fill all your houses, and all your officials’ houses, and all the houses in Egypt. There will be more locusts than your fathers or your grandfathers have ever seen. There will be more locusts than there have ever been since people began living in Egypt.’” Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
7 Then the officials asked Pharaoh, “How long will we be trapped by these people? Let the men go to worship the Lord their God. If you don’t let them go, before you know it, Egypt will be destroyed!”
8 So Pharaoh told his officials to bring Moses and Aaron back to him. Pharaoh said to them, “Go and worship the Lord your God. But tell me, just who is going?”
9 Moses answered, “All of our people, young and old, will go. And we will take our sons and daughters, and our sheep and cattle with us. We will all go because the Lord’s festival is for all of us.”
10 Pharaoh said to them, “The Lord really will have to be with you before I let you and all of your children leave Egypt. Look, you are planning something evil. 11 The men can go worship the Lord. That is what you asked for in the beginning. But all of your people cannot go.” Then Pharaoh sent Moses and Aaron away.
12 The Lord told Moses, “Raise your hand over the land of Egypt and the locusts will come! They will spread all over the land of Egypt and will eat all the plants that the hail did not destroy.”
13 So Moses raised his walking stick over the land of Egypt, and the Lord caused a strong wind to blow from the east. The wind blew all that day and night. When morning came, the wind had brought the locusts to the land of Egypt. 14 The locusts flew into the country of Egypt and landed on the ground. There were more locusts than there had ever been in Egypt. And there will never again be that many locusts there. 15 They covered the ground, and the whole country became dark. The locusts ate every plant on the ground and all the fruit in the trees that the hail had not destroyed. There were no leaves left on any of the trees or plants anywhere in Egypt.
16 Pharaoh quickly called for Moses and Aaron. Pharaoh said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now, forgive me for my sins this time. Ask the Lord to remove this ‘death’ from me.”
18 Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19 So the Lord changed the wind. He made a very strong wind blow from the west, and it blew the locusts out of Egypt and into the Red Sea.[b] Not one locust was left in Egypt! 20 But the Lord caused Pharaoh to be stubborn again, and Pharaoh did not let the Israelites go.
The Darkness
21 Then the Lord told Moses, “Raise your hand into the air and darkness will cover Egypt. It will be so dark you can feel it!”
22 So Moses raised his hand into the air and a cloud of darkness covered Egypt. The darkness stayed in Egypt for three days. 23 None of the people could see each other, and no one got up to go any place for three days. But there was light in all the places where the Israelites lived.
24 Again Pharaoh called for Moses. He said, “Go and worship the Lord! You can take your children with you. But you must leave your sheep and cattle here.”
25 Moses said, “No, we will take them all. In fact, you will give us offerings and sacrifices for us to use in worshiping the Lord our God. 26 Yes, we will take our animals with us to worship the Lord our God. Not one hoof will be left behind. We don’t know yet exactly what we will need to worship the Lord. We will learn that only when we get there.”
27 The Lord made Pharaoh stubborn again, so he refused to let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh told Moses, “Get out of here. I don’t want you to come here again. The next time you come to see me, you will die!”
29 Then Moses told Pharaoh, “You are right about one thing. I will not come to see you again.”
