God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord.(A) I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty,[a](B) but by my name(C) the Lord[b](D) I did not make myself fully known to them.

11 Lord, who is like you among the gods?
Who is like you, glorious in holiness,(A)
revered with praises, performing wonders?(B)
12 You stretched out your right hand,
and the earth swallowed them.
13 With your faithful love,
you will lead the people
you have redeemed;
you will guide them to your holy dwelling
with your strength.(C)

14 When the peoples hear, they will shudder;
anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified;(D)
trembling will seize the leaders of Moab;
all the inhabitants of Canaan will panic;
16 terror(E) and dread will fall on them.
They will be as still[a] as a stone
because of your powerful arm
until your people pass by, Lord,
until the people whom you purchased[b] pass by.(F)

17 You will bring them in and plant them
on the mountain of your possession;(G)
Lord, you have prepared the place
for your dwelling;
Lord,[c] your hands have established the sanctuary.
18 The Lord will reign(H) forever and ever!

19 When Pharaoh’s horses with his chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the water of the sea back over them. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then the prophetess Miriam,(I) Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women came out following her with tambourines and dancing.(J) 21 Miriam sang to them:

Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted;
he has thrown the horse
and its rider into the sea.

Water Provided

22 Then Moses led Israel on from the Red Sea, and they went out to the Wilderness of Shur. They journeyed for three days in the wilderness without finding water. 23 They came to Marah, but they could not drink the water at Marah because it was bitter—that is why it was named Marah.[d] 24 The people grumbled to Moses, “What are we going to drink?” (K) 25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he threw it into the water, the water became drinkable.

The Lord made a statute and ordinance for them at Marah, and he tested them there.(L) 26 He said, “If you will carefully obey the Lord your God, do what is right in his sight, pay attention to his commands, and keep all his statutes, I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”(M)

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy date palms, and they camped there by the water.

The Waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert(AJ) of Shur.(AK) For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.(AL) 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. 25 Then Moses cried out(AP) to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw(AQ) it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

The Ten Commandments

20 Then God spoke all these words:

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.(A)

Do not have other gods besides me.(B)

Do not make an idol(C) for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,(D) bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations(E) of those who hate me, but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands.(F)

Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.(G)

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy:(H) You are to labor six days and do all your work,(I) 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates.(J) 11 For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.

12 Honor your father and your mother(K) so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

13 Do not murder.(L)

14 Do not commit adultery.(M)

15 Do not steal.(N)

16 Do not give false testimony against your neighbor.(O)

17 Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.(P)

The People’s Reaction

18 All the people witnessed[a] the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram’s horn, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it[b] they trembled and stood at a distance.(Q) 19 “You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.”(R)

20 Moses responded to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear him and will not[c] sin.”(S) 21 And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the total darkness where God was.(T)

Moses Receives Additional Laws

22 Then the Lord told Moses, “This is what you are to say to the Israelites: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.(U) 23 Do not make gods of silver to rival me; do not make gods of gold for yourselves.(V)

24 “Make an earthen altar for me, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your flocks and herds. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I cause my name to be remembered.(W) 25 If you make a stone altar for me, do not build it out of cut stones. If you use your chisel on it, you will defile it.(X) 26 Do not go up to my altar on steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed on it.
