Exodus 19-27

At Mount Sinai

19 On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt^(A)—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai.^(B) ²After they set out from Rephidim,^(C) they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.^(D)

³Then Moses went up to God,^(E) and the Lord called^(F) to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ⁴‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt,^(G) and how I carried you on eagles’ wings^(H) and brought you to myself.^(I) ⁵Now if you obey me fully^(J) and keep my covenant,^(K) then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.^(L) Although the whole earth^(M) is mine, ⁶you^[a] will be for me a kingdom of priests^(N) and a holy nation.’^(O) These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

⁷So Moses went back and summoned the elders^(P) of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak.^(Q) ⁸The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.”^(R) So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.

⁹The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud,^(S) so that the people will hear me speaking^(T) with you and will always put their trust^(U) in you.” Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.

¹⁰And the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate^(V) them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes^(W) ¹¹and be ready by the third day,^(X) because on that day the Lord will come down^(Y) on Mount Sinai^(Z) in the sight of all the people. ¹²Put limits^(AA) for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. ¹³They are to be stoned^(AB) or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn^(AC) sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.”^(AD)

¹⁴After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.^(AE) ¹⁵Then he said to the people, “Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain^(AF) from sexual relations.”

¹⁶On the morning of the third day there was thunder^(AG) and lightning, with a thick cloud^(AH) over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast.^(AI) Everyone in the camp trembled.^(AJ) ¹⁷Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.^(AK) ¹⁸Mount Sinai was covered with smoke,^(AL) because the Lord descended on it in fire.^(AM) The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace,^(AN) and the whole mountain^[b] trembled^(AO) violently. ¹⁹As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice^(AP) of God answered^(AQ) him.^[c]

²⁰The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai^(AR) and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up ²¹and the Lord said to him, “Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see^(AS) the Lord and many of them perish.^(AT) ²²Even the priests, who approach^(AU) the Lord, must consecrate^(AV) themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.”^(AW)

²³Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up Mount Sinai,^(AX) because you yourself warned us, ‘Put limits^(AY) around the mountain and set it apart as holy.’”

²⁴The Lord replied, “Go down and bring Aaron^(AZ) up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the Lord, or he will break out against them.”^(BA)

²⁵So Moses went down to the people and told them.

The Ten Commandments^(BB)

20 And God spoke^(BC) all these words:^(BD)

²“I am the Lord your God,^(BE) who brought you out^(BF) of Egypt,^(BG) out of the land of slavery.^(BH)

³“You shall have no other gods before^[d] me.^(BI)

⁴“You shall not make for yourself an image^(BJ) in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. ⁵You shall not bow down to them or worship^(BK) them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,^(BL) punishing the children for the sin of the parents^(BM) to the third and fourth generation^(BN) of those who hate me, ⁶but showing love to a thousand^(BO) generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

⁷“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.^(BP)

⁸“Remember the Sabbath^(BQ) day by keeping it holy. ⁹Six days you shall labor and do all your work,^(BR) ¹⁰but the seventh day is a sabbath^(BS) to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. ¹¹For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,^(BT) the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested^(BU) on the seventh day.^(BV) Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

¹²“Honor your father and your mother,^(BW) so that you may live long^(BX) in the land^(BY) the Lord your God is giving you.

¹³“You shall not murder.^(BZ)

¹⁴“You shall not commit adultery.^(CA)

¹⁵“You shall not steal.^(CB)

¹⁶“You shall not give false testimony^(CC) against your neighbor.^(CD)

¹⁷“You shall not covet^(CE) your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

¹⁸When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet^(CF) and saw the mountain in smoke,^(CG) they trembled with fear.^(CH) They stayed at a distance ¹⁹and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak^(CI) to us or we will die.”^(CJ)

²⁰Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid.^(CK) God has come to test^(CL) you, so that the fear^(CM) of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”^(CN)

²¹The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness^(CO) where God was.

Idols and Altars

²²Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:^(CP) ²³Do not make any gods to be alongside me;^(CQ) do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.^(CR)

²⁴“‘Make an altar^(CS) of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings^(CT) and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name^(CU) to be honored, I will come to you and bless^(CV) you. ²⁵If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool^(CW) on it. ²⁶And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts^(CX) may be exposed.’

21 “These are the laws^(CY) you are to set before them:

Hebrew Servants^(CZ)^(DA)

²“If you buy a Hebrew servant,^(DB) he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free,^(DC) without paying anything. ³If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. ⁴If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.

⁵“But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’^(DD) ⁶then his master must take him before the judges.^[e]^(DE) He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce^(DF) his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.^(DG)

⁷“If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do. ⁸If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself,^[f] he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. ⁹If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. ¹⁰If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights.^(DH) ¹¹If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.

Personal Injuries

¹²“Anyone who strikes a person with a fatal blow is to be put to death.^(DI) ¹³However, if it is not done intentionally, but God lets it happen, they are to flee to a place^(DJ) I will designate. ¹⁴But if anyone schemes and kills someone deliberately,^(DK) that person is to be taken from my altar and put to death.^(DL)

¹⁵“Anyone who attacks^[g] their father or mother is to be put to death.

¹⁶“Anyone who kidnaps someone is to be put to death,^(DM) whether the victim has been sold^(DN) or is still in the kidnapper’s possession.

¹⁷“Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.^(DO)

¹⁸“If people quarrel and one person hits another with a stone or with their fist^[h] and the victim does not die but is confined to bed, ¹⁹the one who struck the blow will not be held liable if the other can get up and walk around outside with a staff; however, the guilty party must pay the injured person for any loss of time and see that the victim is completely healed.

²⁰“Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, ²¹but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.^(DP)

²²“If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely^[i] but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands^(DQ) and the court allows. ²³But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,^(DR) ²⁴eye for eye, tooth for tooth,^(DS) hand for hand, foot for foot, ²⁵burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

²⁶“An owner who hits a male or female slave in the eye and destroys it must let the slave go free to compensate for the eye. ²⁷And an owner who knocks out the tooth of a male or female slave must let the slave go free to compensate for the tooth.

²⁸“If a bull gores a man or woman to death, the bull is to be stoned to death,^(DT) and its meat must not be eaten. But the owner of the bull will not be held responsible. ²⁹If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has been warned but has not kept it penned up^(DU) and it kills a man or woman, the bull is to be stoned and its owner also is to be put to death. ³⁰However, if payment is demanded, the owner may redeem his life by the payment of whatever is demanded.^(DV) ³¹This law also applies if the bull gores a son or daughter. ³²If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty shekels^[j]^(DW) of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull is to be stoned to death.

³³“If anyone uncovers a pit^(DX) or digs one and fails to cover it and an ox or a donkey falls into it, ³⁴the one who opened the pit must pay the owner for the loss and take the dead animal in exchange.

³⁵“If anyone’s bull injures someone else’s bull and it dies, the two parties are to sell the live one and divide both the money and the dead animal equally. ³⁶However, if it was known that the bull had the habit of goring, yet the owner did not keep it penned up,^(DY) the owner must pay, animal for animal, and take the dead animal in exchange.

Protection of Property

22 ^[k]“Whoever steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back^(DZ) five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

²“If a thief is caught breaking in^(EA) at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed;^(EB) ³but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed.

“Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution,^(EC) but if they have nothing, they must be sold^(ED) to pay for their theft. ⁴If the stolen animal is found alive in their possession^(EE)—whether ox or donkey or sheep—they must pay back double.^(EF)

⁵“If anyone grazes their livestock in a field or vineyard and lets them stray and they graze in someone else’s field, the offender must make restitution^(EG) from the best of their own field or vineyard.

⁶“If a fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that it burns shocks^(EH) of grain or standing grain or the whole field, the one who started the fire must make restitution.^(EI)

⁷“If anyone gives a neighbor silver or goods for safekeeping^(EJ) and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house, the thief, if caught, must pay back double.^(EK) ⁸But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before the judges,^(EL) and they must^[l] determine whether the owner of the house has laid hands on the other person’s property. ⁹In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, ‘This is mine,’ both parties are to bring their cases before the judges.^[m]^(EM) The one whom the judges declare^[n] guilty must pay back double to the other.

¹⁰“If anyone gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep or any other animal to their neighbor for safekeeping^(EN) and it dies or is injured or is taken away while no one is looking, ¹¹the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath^(EO) before the Lord that the neighbor did not lay hands on the other person’s property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required. ¹²But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, restitution^(EP) must be made to the owner. ¹³If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, the neighbor shall bring in the remains as evidence and shall not be required to pay for the torn animal.^(EQ)

¹⁴“If anyone borrows an animal from their neighbor and it is injured or dies while the owner is not present, they must make restitution.^(ER) ¹⁵But if the owner is with the animal, the borrower will not have to pay. If the animal was hired, the money paid for the hire covers the loss.^(ES)

Social Responsibility

¹⁶“If a man seduces a virgin^(ET) who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price,^(EU) and she shall be his wife. ¹⁷If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.

¹⁸“Do not allow a sorceress^(EV) to live.

¹⁹“Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal^(EW) is to be put to death.

²⁰“Whoever sacrifices to any god^(EX) other than the Lord must be destroyed.^[o]^(EY)

²¹“Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner,^(EZ) for you were foreigners^(FA) in Egypt.

²²“Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless.^(FB) ²³If you do and they cry out^(FC) to me, I will certainly hear their cry.^(FD) ²⁴My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless.^(FE)

²⁵“If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest.^(FF) ²⁶If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge,^(FG) return it by sunset, ²⁷because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in?^(FH) When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.^(FI)

²⁸“Do not blaspheme God^[p]^(FJ) or curse^(FK) the ruler of your people.^(FL)

²⁹“Do not hold back offerings^(FM) from your granaries or your vats.^[q]

“You must give me the firstborn of your sons.^(FN) ³⁰Do the same with your cattle and your sheep.^(FO) Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day.^(FP)

³¹“You are to be my holy people.^(FQ) So do not eat the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts;^(FR) throw it to the dogs.

Laws of Justice and Mercy

23 “Do not spread false reports.^(FS) Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.^(FT)

²“Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice^(FU) by siding with the crowd,^(FV) ³and do not show favoritism^(FW) to a poor person in a lawsuit.

⁴“If you come across your enemy’s^(FX) ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to return it.^(FY) ⁵If you see the donkey^(FZ) of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help them with it.

⁶“Do not deny justice^(GA) to your poor people in their lawsuits. ⁷Have nothing to do with a false charge^(GB) and do not put an innocent^(GC) or honest person to death,^(GD) for I will not acquit the guilty.^(GE)

⁸“Do not accept a bribe,^(GF) for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent.

⁹“Do not oppress a foreigner;^(GG) you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.

Sabbath Laws

¹⁰“For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, ¹¹but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused.^(GH) Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.

¹²“Six days do your work,^(GI) but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed.^(GJ)

¹³“Be careful^(GK) to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods;^(GL) do not let them be heard on your lips.^(GM)

The Three Annual Festivals

¹⁴“Three times^(GN) a year you are to celebrate a festival to me.

¹⁵“Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread;^(GO) for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,^(GP) for in that month you came out of Egypt.

“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.^(GQ)

¹⁶“Celebrate the Festival of Harvest^(GR) with the firstfruits^(GS) of the crops you sow in your field.

“Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering^(GT) at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field.^(GU)

¹⁷“Three times^(GV) a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord.

¹⁸“Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast.^(GW)

“The fat of my festival offerings must not be kept until morning.^(GX)

¹⁹“Bring the best of the firstfruits^(GY) of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.

“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.^(GZ)

God’s Angel to Prepare the Way

²⁰“See, I am sending an angel^(HA) ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.^(HB) ²¹Pay attention to him and listen^(HC) to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive^(HD) your rebellion,^(HE) since my Name^(HF) is in him. ²²If you listen carefully to what he says and do^(HG) all that I say, I will be an enemy^(HH) to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. ²³My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites,^(HI) and I will wipe them out. ²⁴Do not bow down before their gods or worship^(HJ) them or follow their practices.^(HK) You must demolish^(HL) them and break their sacred stones^(HM) to pieces. ²⁵Worship the Lord your God,^(HN) and his blessing^(HO) will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness^(HP) from among you, ²⁶and none will miscarry or be barren^(HQ) in your land. I will give you a full life span.^(HR)

²⁷“I will send my terror^(HS) ahead of you and throw into confusion^(HT) every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run.^(HU) ²⁸I will send the hornet^(HV) ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites^(HW) out of your way. ²⁹But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals^(HX) too numerous for you. ³⁰Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession^(HY) of the land.

³¹“I will establish your borders from the Red Sea^[r] to the Mediterranean Sea,^[s] and from the desert to the Euphrates River.^(HZ) I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out^(IA) before you. ³²Do not make a covenant^(IB) with them or with their gods. ³³Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare^(IC) to you.”

The Covenant Confirmed

24 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron,^(ID) Nadab and Abihu,^(IE) and seventy of the elders^(IF) of Israel. You are to worship at a distance, ²but Moses alone is to approach^(IG) the Lord; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him.”

³When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws,^(IH) they responded with one voice, “Everything the Lord has said we will do.”^(II) ⁴Moses then wrote^(IJ) down everything the Lord had said.

He got up early the next morning and built an altar^(IK) at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars^(IL) representing the twelve tribes of Israel. ⁵Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings^(IM) and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings^(IN) to the Lord. ⁶Moses^(IO) took half of the blood^(IP) and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed^(IQ) against the altar. ⁷Then he took the Book of the Covenant^(IR) and read it to the people. They responded, “We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”^(IS)

⁸Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people^(IT) and said, “This is the blood of the covenant^(IU) that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

⁹Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders^(IV) of Israel went up ¹⁰and saw^(IW) the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli,^(IX) as bright blue as the sky.^(IY) ¹¹But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw^(IZ) God, and they ate and drank.^(JA)

¹²The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone^(JB) with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”

¹³Then Moses set out with Joshua^(JC) his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain^(JD) of God. ¹⁴He said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur^(JE) are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute^(JF) can go to them.”

¹⁵When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud^(JG) covered it, ¹⁶and the glory^(JH) of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai.^(JI) For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud.^(JJ) ¹⁷To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire^(JK) on top of the mountain. ¹⁸Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty^(JL) days and forty nights.^(JM)

Offerings for the Tabernacle^(JN)

25 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts^(JO) them to give. ³These are the offerings you are to receive from them: gold, silver and bronze; ⁴blue, purple and scarlet yarn^(JP) and fine linen; goat hair; ⁵ram skins dyed red and another type of durable leather^[t];^(JQ) acacia wood;^(JR) ⁶olive oil^(JS) for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense;^(JT) ⁷and onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod^(JU) and breastpiece.^(JV)

⁸“Then have them make a sanctuary^(JW) for me, and I will dwell^(JX) among them. ⁹Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern^(JY) I will show you.

The Ark^(JZ)

¹⁰“Have them make an ark^[u]^(KA) of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high.^[v] ¹¹Overlay^(KB) it with pure gold, both inside and out, and make a gold molding around it. ¹²Cast four gold rings for it and fasten them to its four feet, with two rings^(KC) on one side and two rings on the other. ¹³Then make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold.^(KD) ¹⁴Insert the poles^(KE) into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it. ¹⁵The poles are to remain in the rings of this ark; they are not to be removed.^(KF) ¹⁶Then put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law,^(KG) which I will give you.

¹⁷“Make an atonement cover^(KH) of pure gold—two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. ¹⁸And make two cherubim^(KI) out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. ¹⁹Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; make the cherubim of one piece with the cover, at the two ends. ²⁰The cherubim^(KJ) are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing^(KK) the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover. ²¹Place the cover on top of the ark^(KL) and put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law^(KM) that I will give you. ²²There, above the cover between the two cherubim^(KN) that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet^(KO) with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites.^(KP)

The Table^(KQ)

²³“Make a table^(KR) of acacia wood—two cubits long, a cubit wide and a cubit and a half high.^[w] ²⁴Overlay it with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. ²⁵Also make around it a rim a handbreadth^[x] wide and put a gold molding on the rim. ²⁶Make four gold rings for the table and fasten them to the four corners, where the four legs are. ²⁷The rings are to be close to the rim to hold the poles used in carrying the table. ²⁸Make the poles of acacia wood, overlay them with gold^(KS) and carry the table with them. ²⁹And make its plates and dishes of pure gold, as well as its pitchers and bowls for the pouring out of offerings.^(KT) ³⁰Put the bread of the Presence^(KU) on this table to be before me at all times.

The Lampstand^(KV)

³¹“Make a lampstand^(KW) of pure gold. Hammer out its base and shaft, and make its flowerlike cups, buds and blossoms of one piece with them. ³²Six branches are to extend from the sides of the lampstand—three on one side and three on the other. ³³Three cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms are to be on one branch, three on the next branch, and the same for all six branches extending from the lampstand. ³⁴And on the lampstand there are to be four cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms. ³⁵One bud shall be under the first pair of branches extending from the lampstand, a second bud under the second pair, and a third bud under the third pair—six branches in all. ³⁶The buds and branches shall all be of one piece with the lampstand, hammered out of pure gold.^(KX)

³⁷“Then make its seven lamps^(KY) and set them up on it so that they light the space in front of it. ³⁸Its wick trimmers and trays^(KZ) are to be of pure gold. ³⁹A talent^[y] of pure gold is to be used for the lampstand and all these accessories. ⁴⁰See that you make them according to the pattern^(LA) shown you on the mountain.

The Tabernacle^(LB)

26 “Make the tabernacle^(LC) with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim^(LD) woven into them by a skilled worker. ²All the curtains are to be the same size^(LE)—twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide.^[z] ³Join five of the curtains together, and do the same with the other five. ⁴Make loops of blue material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and do the same with the end curtain in the other set. ⁵Make fifty loops on one curtain and fifty loops on the end curtain of the other set, with the loops opposite each other. ⁶Then make fifty gold clasps and use them to fasten the curtains together so that the tabernacle is a unit.^(LF)

⁷“Make curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle—eleven altogether. ⁸All eleven curtains are to be the same size^(LG)—thirty cubits long and four cubits wide.^[aa] ⁹Join five of the curtains together into one set and the other six into another set. ¹⁵“Make upright frames of acacia wood for the tabernacle. ¹⁶Each frame is to be ten cubits long and a cubit and a half wide,^[ad] ¹⁷with two projections set parallel to each other. Make all the frames of the tabernacle in this way. ¹⁸Make twenty frames for the south side of the tabernacle ¹⁹and make forty silver bases^(LK) to go under them—two bases for each frame, one under each projection. ²⁰For the other side, the north side of the tabernacle, make twenty frames ²¹and forty silver bases^(LL)—two under each frame. ²²Make six frames for the far end, that is, the west end of the tabernacle, ²³and make two frames for the corners at the far end. ²⁴At these two corners they must be double from the bottom all the way to the top and fitted into a single ring; both shall be like that. ²⁵So there will be eight frames and sixteen silver bases—two under each frame.

²⁶“Also make crossbars of acacia wood: five for the frames on one side of the tabernacle, ²⁷five for those on the other side, and five for the frames on the west, at the far end of the tabernacle. ²⁸The center crossbar is to extend from end to end at the middle of the frames. ²⁹Overlay the frames with gold and make gold rings to hold the crossbars. ³If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

⁴If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

⁵If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.

⁶If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

⁷If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double.

⁸If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods.

⁹For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.

¹⁰If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it:

¹¹Then shall an oath of the Lord be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.

¹²And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof.

¹³If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.

¹⁴And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good.

⁴If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.

⁵If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.

³³They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.

24 And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the Lord, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship ye afar off.

²And Moses alone shall come near the Lord: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

³And Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the Lord hath said will we do.

⁴And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

⁵And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the Lord.

⁶And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

⁷And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient.

⁸And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.

⁹Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:

¹⁰And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.

¹¹And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.

¹²And the Lord said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

¹³And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God.

¹⁴And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them.

¹⁵And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount.

¹⁶And the glory of the Lord abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

¹⁷And the sight of the glory of the Lord was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.

¹⁸And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

25 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering.

³And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver, and brass,

⁴And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair,

⁵And rams' skins dyed red, and badgers' skins, and shittim wood,

⁶Oil for the light, spices for anointing oil, and for sweet incense,

⁷Onyx stones, and stones to be set in the ephod, and in the breastplate.

⁸And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.

⁹According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.

¹⁰And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.

¹¹And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.

¹²And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it.

¹³And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.

¹⁴And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them.

¹⁵The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it.

¹⁶And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee.

¹⁷And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof.

¹⁸And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.

¹⁹And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof.

²⁰And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.

²¹And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee.

²²And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel.

²³Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.

²⁴And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, and make thereto a crown of gold round about.

²⁵And thou shalt make unto it a border of an hand breadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden crown to the border thereof round about.

²⁶And thou shalt make for it four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that are on the four feet thereof.

²⁷Over against the border shall the rings be for places of the staves to bear the table.

²⁸And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them.

²⁹And thou shalt make the dishes thereof, and spoons thereof, and covers thereof, and bowls thereof, to cover withal: of pure gold shalt thou make them.

³⁰And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway.

³¹And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same.

³²And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side:

³³Three bowls made like unto almonds, with a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, with a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick.

³⁴And in the candlesticks shall be four bowls made like unto almonds, with their knops and their flowers.

³⁵And there shall be a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, and a knop under two branches of the same, according to the six branches that proceed out of the candlestick.

³⁶Their knops and their branches shall be of the same: all it shall be one beaten work of pure gold.

³⁷And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.

³⁸And the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, shall be of pure gold.

³⁹Of a talent of pure gold shall he make it, with all these vessels.

⁴⁰And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.

26 Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work shalt thou make them.

²The length of one curtain shall be eight and twenty cubits, and the breadth of one curtain four cubits: and every one of the curtains shall have one measure.

³The five curtains shall be coupled together one to another; and other five curtains shall be coupled one to another.

⁴And thou shalt make loops of blue upon the edge of the one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling; and likewise shalt thou make in the uttermost edge of another curtain, in the coupling of the second.

⁵Fifty loops shalt thou make in the one curtain, and fifty loops shalt thou make in the edge of the curtain that is in the coupling of the second; that the loops may take hold one of another.

⁶And thou shalt make fifty taches of gold, and couple the curtains together with the taches: and it shall be one tabernacle.

⁷And thou shalt make curtains of goats' hair to be a covering upon the tabernacle: eleven curtains shalt thou make.

⁸The length of one curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the breadth of one curtain four cubits: and the eleven curtains shall be all of one measure.

⁹And thou shalt couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shalt double the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tabernacle.

¹⁰And thou shalt make fifty loops on the edge of the one curtain that is outmost in the coupling, and fifty loops in the edge of the curtain which coupleth the second.

¹¹And thou shalt make fifty taches of brass, and put the taches into the loops, and couple the tent together, that it may be one.

¹²And the remnant that remaineth of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remaineth, shall hang over the backside of the tabernacle.

¹³And a cubit on the one side, and a cubit on the other side of that which remaineth in the length of the curtains of the tent, it shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it.

¹⁴And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering above of badgers' skins.

¹⁵And thou shalt make boards for the tabernacle of shittim wood standing up.

¹⁶Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and a half shall be the breadth of one board.

¹⁷Two tenons shall there be in one board, set in order one against another: thus shalt thou make for all the boards of the tabernacle.

¹⁸And thou shalt make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards on the south side southward.

¹⁹And thou shalt make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for his two tenons, and two sockets under another board for his two tenons.

²⁰And for the second side of the tabernacle on the north side there shall be twenty boards:

²¹And their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.

²²And for the sides of the tabernacle westward thou shalt make six boards.

²³And two boards shalt thou make for the corners of the tabernacle in the two sides.

²⁴And they shall be coupled together beneath, and they shall be coupled together above the head of it unto one ring: thus shall it be for them both; they shall be for the two corners.

²⁵And they shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.

²⁶And thou shalt make bars of shittim wood; five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,

²⁷And five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the two sides westward.

²⁸And the middle bar in the midst of the boards shall reach from end to end.

²⁹And thou shalt overlay the boards with gold, and make their rings of gold for places for the bars: and thou shalt overlay the bars with gold.

³⁰And thou shalt rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which was shewed thee in the mount.

³¹And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:

³²And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of shittim wood overlaid with gold: their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver.

³³And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy.

³⁴And thou shalt put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place.

³⁵And thou shalt set the table without the vail, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side.

³⁶And thou shalt make an hanging for the door of the tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework.

³⁷And thou shalt make for the hanging five pillars of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold, and their hooks shall be of gold: and thou shalt cast five sockets of brass for them.

27 And thou shalt make an altar of shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof shall be three cubits.

²And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass.

³And thou shalt make his pans to receive his ashes, and his shovels, and his basons, and his fleshhooks, and his firepans: all the vessels thereof thou shalt make of brass.

⁴And thou shalt make for it a grate of network of brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brasen rings in the four corners thereof.

⁵And thou shalt put it under the compass of the altar beneath, that the net may be even to the midst of the altar.

⁶And thou shalt make staves for the altar, staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with brass.

⁷And the staves shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the altar, to bear it.

⁸Hollow with boards shalt thou make it: as it was shewed thee in the mount, so shall they make it.

⁹And thou shalt make the court of the tabernacle: for the south side southward there shall be hangings for the court of fine twined linen of an hundred cubits long for one side:

¹⁰And the twenty pillars thereof and their twenty sockets shall be of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets shall be of silver.

¹¹And likewise for the north side in length there shall be hangings of an hundred cubits long, and his twenty pillars and their twenty sockets of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets of silver.

¹²And for the breadth of the court on the west side shall be hangings of fifty cubits: their pillars ten, and their sockets ten.

¹³And the breadth of the court on the east side eastward shall be fifty cubits.

¹⁴The hangings of one side of the gate shall be fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their sockets three.

¹⁵And on the other side shall be hangings fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their sockets three.

¹⁶And for the gate of the court shall be an hanging of twenty cubits, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, wrought with needlework: and their pillars shall be four, and their sockets four.

¹⁷All the pillars round about the court shall be filleted with silver; their hooks shall be of silver, and their sockets of brass.

¹⁸The length of the court shall be an hundred cubits, and the breadth fifty every where, and the height five cubits of fine twined linen, and their sockets of brass.

¹⁹All the vessels of the tabernacle in all the service thereof, and all the pins thereof, and all the pins of the court, shall be of brass.

²⁰And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always.

²¹In the tabernacle of the congregation without the vail, which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning before the Lord: it shall be a statute for ever unto their generations on the behalf of the children of Israel.

28 And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons.

²And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.

³And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.

⁴And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.

⁵And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.

⁶And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work.

⁷It shall have the two shoulderpieces thereof joined at the two edges thereof; and so it shall be joined together.

⁸And the curious girdle of the ephod, which is upon it, shall be of the same, according to the work thereof; even of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.

⁹And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and grave on them the names of the children of Israel:

¹⁰Six of their names on one stone, and the other six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth.

¹¹With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, shalt thou engrave the two stones with the names of the children of Israel: thou shalt make them to be set in ouches of gold.

¹²And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the Lord upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

¹³And thou shalt make ouches of gold;

¹⁴And two chains of pure gold at the ends; of wreathen work shalt thou make them, and fasten the wreathen chains to the ouches.

¹⁵And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work; after the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine twined linen, shalt thou make it.

¹⁶Foursquare it shall be being doubled; a span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof.

¹⁷And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row.

¹⁸And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond.

¹⁹And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.

²⁰And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings.

²¹And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.

²²And thou shalt make upon the breastplate chains at the ends of wreathen work of pure gold.

²³And thou shalt make upon the breastplate two rings of gold, and shalt put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate.

²⁴And thou shalt put the two wreathen chains of gold in the two rings which are on the ends of the breastplate.

²⁵And the other two ends of the two wreathen chains thou shalt fasten in the two ouches, and put them on the shoulderpieces of the ephod before it.

²⁶And thou shalt make two rings of gold, and thou shalt put them upon the two ends of the breastplate in the border thereof, which is in the side of the ephod inward.

²⁷And two other rings of gold thou shalt make, and shalt put them on the two sides of the ephod underneath, toward the forepart thereof, over against the other coupling thereof, above the curious girdle of the ephod.

²⁸And they shall bind the breastplate by the rings thereof unto the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it may be above the curious girdle of the ephod, and that the breastplate be not loosed from the ephod.

²⁹And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually.

³⁰And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.

³¹And thou shalt make the robe of the ephod all of blue.

³²And there shall be an hole in the top of it, in the midst thereof: it shall have a binding of woven work round about the hole of it, as it were the hole of an habergeon, that it be not rent.

³³And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:

³⁴A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe round about.

³⁵And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the Lord, and when he cometh out, that he die not.

³⁶And thou shalt make a plate of pure gold, and grave upon it, like the engravings of a signet, Holiness To The Lord.

³⁷And thou shalt put it on a blue lace, that it may be upon the mitre; upon the forefront of the mitre it shall be.

³⁸And it shall be upon Aaron's forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the Lord.

³⁹And thou shalt embroider the coat of fine linen, and thou shalt make the mitre of fine linen, and thou shalt make the girdle of needlework.

⁴⁰And for Aaron's sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty.

⁴¹And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.

⁴²And thou shalt make them linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach:

⁴³And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him.

29 And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest's office: Take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish,

²And unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened tempered with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour shalt thou make them.

³And thou shalt put them into one basket, and bring them in the basket, with the bullock and the two rams.

⁴And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt wash them with water.

⁵And thou shalt take the garments, and put upon Aaron the coat, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the curious girdle of the ephod:

⁶And thou shalt put the mitre upon his head, and put the holy crown upon the mitre.

⁷Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.

⁸And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them.

⁹And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aaron and his sons, and put the bonnets on them: and the priest's office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aaron and his sons.

¹⁰And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock.

¹¹And thou shalt kill the bullock before the Lord, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

¹²And thou shalt take of the blood of the bullock, and put it upon the horns of the altar with thy finger, and pour all the blood beside the bottom of the altar.

¹³And thou shalt take all the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul that is above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and burn them upon the altar.

¹⁴But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering.

¹⁵Thou shalt also take one ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram.

¹⁶And thou shalt slay the ram, and thou shalt take his blood, and sprinkle it round about upon the altar.

¹⁷And thou shalt cut the ram in pieces, and wash the inwards of him, and his legs, and put them unto his pieces, and unto his head.

¹⁸And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering unto the Lord: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

¹⁹And thou shalt take the other ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram.

²⁰Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.

²¹And thou shalt take of the blood that is upon the altar, and of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon the garments of his sons with him: and he shall be hallowed, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

²²Also thou shalt take of the ram the fat and the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and the right shoulder; for it is a ram of consecration:

²³And one loaf of bread, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the Lord:

²⁴And thou shalt put all in the hands of Aaron, and in the hands of his sons; and shalt wave them for a wave offering before the Lord.

²⁵And thou shalt receive them of their hands, and burn them upon the altar for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour before the Lord: it is an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

²⁶And thou shalt take the breast of the ram of Aaron's consecration, and wave it for a wave offering before the Lord: and it shall be thy part.

²⁷And thou shalt sanctify the breast of the wave offering, and the shoulder of the heave offering, which is waved, and which is heaved up, of the ram of the consecration, even of that which is for Aaron, and of that which is for his sons:

²⁸And it shall be Aaron's and his sons' by a statute for ever from the children of Israel: for it is an heave offering: and it shall be an heave offering from the children of Israel of the sacrifice of their peace offerings, even their heave offering unto the Lord.

²⁹And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons' after him, to be anointed therein, and to be consecrated in them.

³⁰And that son that is priest in his stead shall put them on seven days, when he cometh into the tabernacle of the congregation to minister in the holy place.

³¹And thou shalt take the ram of the consecration, and seethe his flesh in the holy place.

³²And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

³³And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them: but a stranger shall not eat thereof, because they are holy.

³⁴And if ought of the flesh of the consecrations, or of the bread, remain unto the morning, then thou shalt burn the remainder with fire: it shall not be eaten, because it is holy.

³⁵And thus shalt thou do unto Aaron, and to his sons, according to all things which I have commanded thee: seven days shalt thou consecrate them.

³⁶And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin offering for atonement: and thou shalt cleanse the altar, when thou hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify it.

³⁷Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy.

³⁸Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually.

³⁹The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even:

⁴⁰And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering.

⁴¹And the other lamb thou shalt offer at even, and shalt do thereto according to the meat offering of the morning, and according to the drink offering thereof, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

⁴²This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee.

⁴³And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory.

⁴⁴And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar: I will sanctify also both Aaron and his sons, to minister to me in the priest's office.

²A cubit shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare shall it be: and two cubits shall be the height thereof: the horns thereof shall be of the same.

³And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof; and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about.

⁴And two golden rings shalt thou make to it under the crown of it, by the two corners thereof, upon the two sides of it shalt thou make it; and they shall be for places for the staves to bear it withal.

⁵And thou shalt make the staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.

⁶And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee.

⁷And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.

⁸And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations.

⁹Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon.

¹⁰And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto the Lord.

¹¹And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

¹²When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the Lord, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.

¹³This they shall give, every one that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary: (a shekel is twenty gerahs:) an half shekel shall be the offering of the Lord.

¹⁴Every one that passeth among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto the Lord.

¹⁵The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the Lord, to make an atonement for your souls.

¹⁶And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the Lord, to make an atonement for your souls.

¹⁸Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein.

So Israel camped there before ^(C)the mountain.

Animal Control Laws

²⁸“If an ox gores a man or a woman to death, then ^(CV)the ox shall surely be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be ^[m]acquitted. ²⁹But if the ox ^[n]tended to thrust with its horn in times past, and it has been made known to his owner, and he has not kept it confined, so that it has killed a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned and its owner also shall be put to death. ³⁰If there is imposed on him a sum of money, then he shall pay ^(CW)to redeem his life, whatever is imposed on him. ³¹Whether it has gored a son or gored a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him. ³²If the ox gores a male or female servant, he shall give to their master ^(CX)thirty shekels of silver, and the ^(CY)ox shall be stoned.

³³“And if a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls in it, ³⁴the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to their owner, but the dead animal shall be his.

³⁵“If one man’s ox hurts another’s, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live ox and divide the money from it; and the dead ox they shall also divide. ³⁶Or if it was known that the ox tended to thrust in time past, and its owner has not kept it confined, he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead animal shall be his own.

Responsibility for Property

22 “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and slaughters it or sells it, he shall ^(CZ)restore five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep. ²If the thief is found ^(DA)breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be ^(DB)no guilt for his bloodshed. ³If the sun has risen on him, there shall be guilt for his bloodshed. He should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be ^(DC)sold^[o] for his theft. ⁴If the theft is certainly ^(DD)found alive in his hand, whether it is an ox or donkey or sheep, he shall ^(DE)restore double.

⁵“If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed, and lets loose his animal, and it feeds in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.

⁶“If fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacked grain, standing grain, or the field is consumed, he who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

⁷“If a man ^(DF)delivers to his neighbor money or articles to keep, and it is stolen out of the man’s house, ^(DG)if the thief is found, he shall pay double. ⁸If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the ^(DH)judges to see whether he has put his hand into his neighbor’s goods.

¹⁴^(FB)“Three times you shall keep a feast to Me in the year: ¹⁵^(FC)You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread (you shall eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of Abib, for in it you came out of Egypt; ^(FD)none shall appear before Me empty); ¹⁶^(FE)and the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors which you have sown in the field; and ^(FF)the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field.

¹⁷^(FG)“Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord ^[s]God.

¹⁸^(FH)“You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened ^(FI)bread; nor shall the fat of My ^[t]sacrifice remain until morning. ¹⁹^(FJ)The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God. ^(FK)You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

The Angel and the Promises

²⁰^(FL)“Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. ²¹Beware of Him and obey His voice; ^(FM)do not provoke Him, for He will ^(FN)not pardon your transgressions; for ^(FO)My name is in Him. ²²But if you indeed obey His voice and do all that I speak, then ^(FP)I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. ²³^(FQ)For My Angel will go before you and ^(FR)bring you in to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites and the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will ^[u]cut them off. ²⁴You shall not ^(FS)bow down to their gods, nor serve them, ^(FT)nor do according to their works; ^(FU)but you shall utterly overthrow them and completely break down their sacred pillars.

²⁵“So you shall ^(FV)serve the Lord your God, and ^(FW)He will bless your bread and your water. And ^(FX)I will take sickness away from the midst of you. ²⁶^(FY)No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will ^(FZ)fulfill the number of your days.

²⁷“I will send ^(GA)My fear before you, I will ^(GB)cause confusion among all the people to whom you come, and will make all your enemies turn their backs to you. ²⁸And ^(GC)I will send hornets before you, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite from before you. ²⁹^(GD)I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beasts of the field become too numerous for you. ³⁰Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the land. ³¹And ^(GE)I will set your ^[v]bounds from the Red Sea to the sea, Philistia, and from the desert to the ^[w]River. For I will ^(GF)deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you. ³²^(GG)You shall make no ^[x]covenant with them, nor with their gods. ³³They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against Me. For if you serve their gods, ^(GH)it will surely be a snare to you.”

Israel Affirms the Covenant

24 Now He said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, ^(GI)Nadab and Abihu, ^(GJ)and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar. ²And Moses alone shall come near the Lord, but they shall not come near; nor shall the people go up with him.”

³So Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the ^[y]judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, ^(GK)“All the words which the Lord has said we will do.” ⁴And Moses ^(GL)wrote all the words of the Lord. And he rose early in the morning, and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve ^(GM)pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel. ⁵Then he sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered ^(GN)burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord. ⁶And Moses ^(GO)took half the blood and put it in basins, and half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. ⁷Then he ^(GP)took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.” ⁸And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is ^(GQ)the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words.”

On the Mountain with God

⁹Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, ¹⁰and they ^(GR)saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of ^(GS)sapphire stone, and it was like the ^(GT)very^[z] heavens in its clarity. ¹¹But on the nobles of the children of Israel He ^(GU)did not ^[aa]lay His hand. So ^(GV)they saw God, and they ^(GW)ate and drank.

¹²Then the Lord said to Moses, ^(GX)“Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you ^(GY)tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.”

¹³So Moses arose with ^(GZ)his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up to the mountain of God. ¹⁴And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Indeed, Aaron and ^(HA)Hur are with you. If any man has a difficulty, let him go to them.” ¹⁵Then Moses went up into the mountain, and ^(HB)a cloud covered the mountain.

¹⁶Now ^(HC)the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. ¹⁷The sight of the glory of the Lord was like ^(HD)a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. ¹⁸So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And ^(HE)Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Offerings for the Sanctuary^(HF)

25 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ²“Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me an ^[ab]offering. ^(HG)From everyone who gives it willingly with his heart you shall take My offering. ³And this is the offering which you shall take from them: gold, silver, and bronze; ⁴blue, purple, and scarlet thread, fine linen, and goats’ hair; ⁵ram skins dyed red, ^[ac]badger skins, and acacia wood; ⁶^(HH)oil for the light, and ^(HI)spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense; ⁷onyx stones, and stones to be set in the ^(HJ)ephod and in the breastplate. ⁸And let them make Me a ^(HK)sanctuary,^[ad] that ^(HL)I may dwell among them. ⁹According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it.

The Ark of the Testimony^(HM)

¹⁰^(HN)“And they shall make an ark of acacia wood; two and a half cubits shall be its length, a cubit and a half its width, and a cubit and a half its height. ¹¹And you shall overlay it with pure gold, inside and out you shall overlay it, and shall make on it a molding of ^(HO)gold all around. ¹²You shall cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in its four corners; two rings shall be on one side, and two rings on the other side. ¹³And you shall make poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. ¹⁴You shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, that the ark may be carried by them. ¹⁵^(HP)The poles shall be in the rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it. ¹⁶And you shall put into the ark ^(HQ)the Testimony which I will give you.

¹⁷^(HR)“You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold; two and a half cubits shall be its length and a cubit and a half its width. ¹⁸And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work you shall make them at the two ends of the mercy seat. ¹⁹Make one cherub at one end, and the other cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim at the two ends of it of one piece with the mercy seat. ²⁰And ^(HS)the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat. ²¹^(HT)You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and ^(HU)in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you. ²²And ^(HV)there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from ^(HW)between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel.

The Table for the Showbread^(HX)

²³^(HY)“You shall also make a table of acacia wood; two cubits shall be its length, a cubit its width, and a cubit and a half its height. ²⁴And you shall overlay it with pure gold, and make a molding of gold all around. ²⁵You shall make for it a frame of a handbreadth all around, and you shall make a gold molding for the frame all around. ²⁶And you shall make for it four rings of gold, and put the rings on the four corners that are at its four legs. ²⁷The rings shall be close to the frame, as holders for the poles to bear the table. ²⁸And you shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold, that the table may be carried with them. ²⁹You shall make ^(HZ)its dishes, its pans, its pitchers, and its bowls for pouring. You shall make them of pure gold. ³⁰And you shall set the ^(IA)showbread on the table before Me always.

The Gold Lampstand^(IB)

³¹^(IC)“You shall also make a lampstand of pure gold; the lampstand shall be of hammered work. Its shaft, its branches, its bowls, its ornamental knobs, and flowers shall be of one piece. ³²And six branches shall come out of its sides: three branches of the lampstand out of one side, and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side. ³³^(ID)Three bowls shall be made like almond blossoms on one branch, with an ornamental knob and a flower, and three bowls made like almond blossoms on the other branch, with an ornamental knob and a flower—and so for the six branches that come out of the lampstand. ³⁴^(IE)On the lampstand itself four bowls shall be made like almond blossoms, each with its ornamental knob and flower. ³⁵And there shall be a knob under the first two branches of the same, a knob under the second two branches of the same, and a knob under the third two branches of the same, according to the six branches that extend from the lampstand. ³⁶Their knobs and their branches shall be of one piece; all of it shall be one hammered piece of pure gold. ³⁷You shall make seven lamps for it, and ^(IF)they shall arrange its lamps so that they ^(IG)give light in front of it. ³⁸And its wick-trimmers and their trays shall be of pure gold. ³⁹It shall be made of a talent of pure gold, with all these utensils. ⁴⁰And ^(IH)see to it that you make them according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.

The Tabernacle^(II)

26 “Moreover ^(IJ)you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine woven linen and blue, purple, and scarlet thread; with artistic designs of cherubim you shall weave them. ²The length of each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits. And every one of the curtains shall have ^[ae]the same measurements. ³Five curtains shall be coupled to one another, and the other five curtains shall be coupled to one another. ⁴And you shall make loops of blue yarn on the edge of the curtain on the selvedge of one set, and likewise you shall do on the outer edge of the other curtain of the second set. ⁵Fifty loops you shall make in the one curtain, and fifty loops you shall make on the edge of the curtain that is on the end of the second set, that the loops may be clasped to one another. ⁶And you shall make fifty clasps of gold, and couple the curtains together with the clasps, so that it may be one tabernacle.

⁷^(IK)“You shall also make curtains of goats’ hair, to be a tent over the tabernacle. You shall make eleven curtains. ⁸The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; and the eleven curtains shall all have the same measurements. ⁹And you shall couple five curtains by themselves and six curtains by themselves, and you shall double over the sixth curtain at the forefront of the tent. ¹⁰You shall make fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that is outermost in one set, and fifty loops on the edge of the curtain of the second set. ¹¹And you shall make fifty bronze clasps, put the clasps into the loops, and couple the tent together, that it may be one. ¹²The remnant that remains of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remains, shall hang over the back of the tabernacle. ¹³And a cubit on one side and a cubit on the other side, of what remains of the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle, on this side and on that side, to cover it.

¹⁴^(IL)“You shall also make a covering of ram skins dyed red for the tent, and a covering of badger skins above that.

¹⁵“And for the tabernacle you shall ^(IM)make the boards of acacia wood, standing upright. ¹⁶Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and a half shall be the width of each board. ¹⁷Two ^[af]tenons shall be in each board for binding one to another. Thus you shall make for all the boards of the tabernacle. ¹⁸And you shall make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards for the south side. ¹⁹You shall make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards: two sockets under each of the boards for its two tenons. ²⁰And for the second side of the tabernacle, the north side, there shall be twenty boards ²¹and their forty sockets of silver: two sockets under each of the boards. ²²For the far side of the tabernacle, westward, you shall make six boards. ²³And you shall also make two boards for the two back corners of the tabernacle. ²⁴They shall be ^[ag]coupled together at the bottom and they shall be coupled together at the top by one ring. Thus it shall be for both of them. They shall be for the two corners. ²⁵So there shall be eight boards with their sockets of silver—sixteen sockets—two sockets under each of the boards.

²⁶“And you shall make bars of acacia wood: five for the boards on one side of the tabernacle, ²⁷five bars for the boards on the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the far side westward. ²⁸The ^(IN)middle bar shall pass through the midst of the boards from end to end. ²⁹You shall overlay the boards with gold, make their rings of gold as holders for the bars, and overlay the bars with gold. ³⁰And you shall raise up the tabernacle ^(IO)according to its pattern which you were shown on the mountain.

³¹^(IP)“You shall make a veil woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen. It shall be woven with an artistic design of cherubim. ³²You shall hang it upon the four pillars of acacia wood overlaid with gold. Their hooks shall be gold, upon four sockets of silver. ³³And you shall hang the veil from the clasps. Then you shall bring ^(IQ)the ark of the Testimony in there, behind the veil. The veil shall be a divider for you between ^(IR)the holy place and the Most Holy. ³⁴^(IS)You shall put the mercy seat upon the ark of the Testimony in the Most Holy. ³⁵^(IT)You shall set the table outside the veil, and ^(IU)the lampstand across from the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south; and you shall put the table on the north side.

³⁶^(IV)“You shall make a screen for the door of the tabernacle, woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, made by a weaver. ³⁷And you shall make for the screen ^(IW)five pillars of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold; their hooks shall be gold, and you shall cast five sockets of bronze for them.

The Altar of Burnt Offering^(IX)

27 “You shall make ^(IY)an altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits wide—the altar shall be square—and its height shall be three cubits. ²You shall make its horns on its four corners; its horns shall be of one piece with it. And you shall overlay it with bronze. ³Also you shall make its pans to receive its ashes, and its shovels and its basins and its forks and its firepans; you shall make all its utensils of bronze. ⁴You shall make a grate for it, a network of bronze; and on the network you shall make four bronze rings at its four corners. ⁵You shall put it under the rim of the altar beneath, that the network may be midway up the altar. ⁶And you shall make poles for the altar, poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with bronze. ⁷The poles shall be put in the rings, and the poles shall be on the two sides of the altar to bear it. ⁸You shall make it hollow with boards; ^(IZ)as it was shown you on the mountain, so shall they make it.

The Court of the Tabernacle^(JA)

⁹^(JB)“You shall also make the court of the tabernacle. For the south side there shall be hangings for the court made of fine woven linen, one hundred cubits long for one side. ¹⁰And its twenty pillars and their twenty sockets shall be bronze. The hooks of the pillars and their bands shall be silver. ¹¹Likewise along the length of the north side there shall be hangings one hundred cubits long, with its twenty pillars and their twenty sockets of bronze, and the hooks of the pillars and their bands of silver.

¹²“And along the width of the court on the west side shall be hangings of fifty cubits, with their ten pillars and their ten sockets. ¹³The width of the court on the east side shall be fifty cubits. ¹⁴The hangings on one side of the gate shall be fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three sockets. ¹⁵And on the other side shall be hangings of fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three sockets.

¹⁶“For the gate of the court there shall be a screen twenty cubits long, woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, made by a weaver. It shall have four pillars and four sockets. ¹⁷All the pillars around the court shall have bands of silver; their ^(JC)hooks shall be of silver and their sockets of bronze. ¹⁸The length of the court shall be one hundred cubits, the width fifty throughout, and the height five cubits, made of fine woven linen, and its sockets of bronze. ¹⁹All the utensils of the tabernacle for all its service, all its pegs, and all the pegs of the court, shall be of bronze.

The Care of the Lampstand^(JD)

²⁰“And ^(JE)you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to ^[ah]burn continually. ²¹In the tabernacle of meeting, ^(JF)outside the veil which is before the Testimony, ^(JG)Aaron and his sons shall tend it from evening until morning before the Lord. ^(JH)It shall be a statute forever to their generations on behalf of the children of Israel.

Garments for the Priesthood^(JI)

28 “Now take ^(JJ)Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to Me as ^(JK)priest, Aaron and Aaron’s sons: ^(JL)Nadab, Abihu, ^(JM)Eleazar, and Ithamar. ²And ^(JN)you shall make ^[ai]holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. ³So ^(JO)you shall speak to all who are gifted artisans, ^(JP)whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments, to consecrate him, that he may minister to Me as priest. ⁴And these are the garments which they shall make: ^(JQ)a breastplate, ^(JR)an ^[aj]ephod, ^(JS)a robe, ^(JT)a skillfully woven tunic, a turban, and ^(JU)a sash. So they shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons, that he may minister to Me as priest.

The Ephod

⁵“They shall take the gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and the fine linen, ⁶^(JV)and they shall make the ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, artistically worked. ⁷It shall have two shoulder straps joined at its two edges, and so it shall be joined together. ⁸And the ^[ak]intricately woven band of the ephod, which is on it, shall be of the same workmanship, made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen.

⁹“Then you shall take two onyx ^(JW)stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel: ¹⁰six of their names on one stone and six names on the other stone, in order of their ^(JX)birth. ¹¹With the work of an ^(JY)engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, you shall engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel. You shall set them in settings of gold. ¹²And you shall put the two stones on the shoulders of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. So ^(JZ)Aaron shall bear their names before the Lord on his two shoulders ^(KA)as a memorial. ¹³You shall also make settings of gold, ¹⁴and you shall make two chains of pure gold like braided cords, and fasten the braided chains to the settings.

The Breastplate^(KB)

¹⁵^(KC)“You shall make the breastplate of judgment. Artistically woven according to the workmanship of the ephod you shall make it: of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, you shall make it. ¹⁶It shall be doubled into a square: a span shall be its length, and a span shall be its width. ¹⁷^(KD)And you shall put settings of stones in it, four rows of stones: The first row shall be a ^[al]sardius, a topaz, and an emerald; this shall be the first row; ¹⁸the second row shall be a turquoise, a sapphire, and a diamond; ¹⁹the third row, a ^[am]jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; ²⁰and the fourth row, a ^[an]beryl, an ^[ao]onyx, and a jasper. They shall be set in gold settings. ²¹And the stones shall have the names of the sons of Israel, twelve according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, each one with its own name; they shall be according to the twelve tribes.

²²“You shall make chains for the breastplate at the end, like braided cords of pure gold. ²³And you shall make two rings of gold for the breastplate, and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate. ²⁴Then you shall put the two braided chains of gold in the two rings which are on the ends of the breastplate; ²⁵and the other two ends of the two braided chains you shall fasten to the two settings, and put them on the shoulder straps of the ephod in the front.

²⁶“You shall make two rings of gold, and put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on the edge of it, which is on the inner side of the ephod. ²⁷And two other rings of gold you shall make, and put them on the two shoulder straps, underneath the ephod toward its front, right at the seam above the ^[ap]intricately woven band of the ephod. ²⁸They shall bind the breastplate by means of its rings to the rings of the ephod, using a blue cord, so that it is above the intricately woven band of the ephod, and so that the breastplate does not come loose from the ephod.

²⁹“So Aaron shall ^(KE)bear the names of the sons of Israel on the breastplate of judgment over his heart, when he goes into the holy place, as a memorial before the Lord continually. ³⁰And ^(KF)you shall put in the breastplate of judgment the ^[aq]Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he goes in before the Lord. So Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel over his heart before the Lord continually.

Other Priestly Garments^(KG)

³¹^(KH)“You shall make the robe of the ephod all of blue. ³²There shall be an opening for his head in the middle of it; it shall have a woven binding all around its opening, like the opening in a coat of mail, so that it does not tear. ³³And upon its hem you shall make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, all around its hem, and bells of gold between them all around: ³⁴a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe all around. ³⁵And it shall be upon Aaron when he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he goes into the holy place before the Lord and when he comes out, that he may not die.

³⁶^(KI)“You shall also make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet:

HOLINESS TO THE LORD.

³⁷And you shall put it on a blue cord, that it may be on the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban. ³⁸So it shall be on Aaron’s forehead, that Aaron may ^(KJ)bear the iniquity of the holy things which the children of Israel hallow in all their ^[ar]holy gifts; and it shall always be on his forehead, that they may be ^(KK)accepted before the Lord.

³⁹“You shall ^(KL)skillfully weave the tunic of fine linen thread, you shall make the turban of fine linen, and you shall make the sash of woven work.

⁴⁰^(KM)“For Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics, and you shall make sashes for them. And you shall make ^[as]hats for them, for glory and ^(KN)beauty. ⁴¹So you shall put them on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him. You shall ^(KO)anoint them, ^(KP)consecrate them, and ^[at]sanctify them, that they may minister to Me as priests. ⁴²And you shall make ^(KQ)for them linen trousers to cover their ^[au]nakedness; they shall ^[av]reach from the waist to the thighs. ⁴³They shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they come into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near ^(KR)the altar to minister in the holy place, that they ^(KS)do not incur ^[aw]iniquity and die. ^(KT)It shall be a statute forever to him and his descendants after him.

Aaron and His Sons Consecrated^(KU)

29 “And this is what you shall do to them to hallow them for ministering to Me as priests: ^(KV)Take one young bull and two rams without blemish, ²and ^(KW)unleavened bread, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil (you shall make them of wheat flour). ³You shall put them in one basket and bring them in the basket, with the bull and the two rams.

⁴“And Aaron and his sons you shall bring to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, ^(KX)and you shall wash them with water. ⁵^(KY)Then you shall take the garments, put the tunic on Aaron, and the robe of the ephod, the ephod, and the breastplate, and gird him with ^(KZ)the intricately woven band of the ephod. ⁶^(LA)You shall put the turban on his head, and put the holy crown on the turban. ⁷And you shall take the anointing ^(LB)oil, pour it on his head, and anoint him. ⁸Then ^(LC)you shall bring his sons and put tunics on them. ⁹And you shall gird them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and put the hats on them. ^(LD)The priesthood shall be theirs for a perpetual statute. So you shall ^(LE)consecrate Aaron and his sons.

¹⁰“You shall also have the bull brought before the tabernacle of meeting, and ^(LF)Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the bull. ¹¹Then you shall kill the bull before the Lord, by the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ¹²You shall take some of the blood of the bull and put it on ^(LG)the horns of the altar with your finger, and ^(LH)pour all the blood beside the base of the altar. ¹³And ^(LI)you shall take all the fat that covers the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. ¹⁴But ^(LJ)the flesh of the bull, with its skin and its offal, you shall burn with fire outside the camp. It is a sin offering.

¹⁵^(LK)“You shall also take one ram, and Aaron and his sons shall ^(LL)put their hands on the head of the ram; ¹⁶and you shall kill the ram, and you shall take its blood and ^(LM)sprinkle it all around on the altar. ¹⁷Then you shall cut the ram in pieces, wash its entrails and its legs, and put them with its pieces and with its head. ¹⁸And you shall burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a ^(LN)burnt offering to the Lord; it is a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord.

¹⁹^(LO)“You shall also take the other ram, and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the ram. ²⁰Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. ²¹And you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar, and some of ^(LP)the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments, on his sons and on the garments of his sons with him; and ^(LQ)he and his garments shall be hallowed, and his sons and his sons’ garments with him.

²²“Also you shall take the fat of the ram, the fat tail, the fat that covers the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, the two kidneys and the fat on them, the right thigh (for it is a ram of consecration), ²³^(LR)one loaf of bread, one cake made with oil, and one wafer from the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the Lord; ²⁴and you shall put all these in the hands of Aaron and in the hands of his sons, and you shall ^(LS)wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. ²⁵^(LT)You shall receive them back from their hands and burn them on the altar as a burnt offering, as a sweet aroma before the Lord. It is an offering made by fire to the Lord.

²⁶“Then you shall take ^(LU)the breast of the ram of Aaron’s consecration and wave it as a wave offering before the Lord; and it shall be your portion. ²⁷And from the ram of the consecration you shall consecrate ^(LV)the breast of the wave offering which is waved, and the thigh of the heave offering which is raised, of that which is for Aaron and of that which is for his sons. ²⁸It shall be from the children of Israel for Aaron and his sons ^(LW)by a statute forever. For it is a heave offering; ^(LX)it shall be a heave offering from the children of Israel from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, that is, their heave offering to the Lord.

²⁹“And the ^(LY)holy garments of Aaron ^(LZ)shall be his sons’ after him, ^(MA)to be anointed in them and to be consecrated in them. ³⁰^(MB)That son who becomes priest in his place shall put them on for ^(MC)seven days, when he enters the tabernacle of meeting to minister in the ^[ax]holy place.

³¹“And you shall take the ram of the consecration and ^(MD)boil its flesh in the holy place. ³²Then Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the ^(ME)bread that is in the basket, by the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ³³^(MF)They shall eat those things with which the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them; ^(MG)but an outsider shall not eat them, because they are holy. ³⁴And if any of the flesh of the consecration offerings, or of the bread, remains until the morning, then ^(MH)you shall burn the remainder with fire. It shall not be eaten, because it is holy.

³⁵“Thus you shall do to Aaron and his sons, according to all that I have commanded you. ^(MI)Seven days you shall consecrate them. ³⁶And you ^(MJ)shall offer a bull every day as a sin offering for atonement. ^(MK)You shall cleanse the altar when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to sanctify it. ³⁷Seven days you shall make atonement for the altar and sanctify it. And the altar shall be most holy. ^(ML)Whatever touches the altar must be holy.

The Daily Offerings^(MM)

³⁸“Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: ^(MN)two lambs of the first year, ^(MO)day by day continually. ³⁹One lamb you shall offer ^(MP)in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer ^[ay]at twilight. ⁴⁰With the one lamb shall be one-tenth of an ephah of flour mixed with one-fourth of a hin of pressed oil, and one-fourth of a hin of wine as a drink offering. ⁴¹And the other lamb you shall ^(MQ)offer ^[az]at twilight; and you shall offer with it the grain offering and the drink offering, as in the morning, for a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord. ⁴²This shall be ^(MR)a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord, ^(MS)where I will meet you to speak with you. ⁴³And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle ^(MT)shall be sanctified by My glory. ⁴⁴So I will consecrate the tabernacle of meeting and the altar. I will also ^(MU)consecrate both Aaron and his sons to minister to Me as priests. ⁴⁵^(MV)I will dwell among the children of Israel and will ^(MW)be their God. ⁴⁶And they shall know that ^(MX)I am the Lord their God, who ^(MY)brought them up out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them. I am the Lord their God.

The Altar of Incense^(MZ)

30 “You shall make ^(NA)an altar to burn incense on; you shall make it of acacia wood. ²A cubit shall be its length and a cubit its width—it shall be square—and two cubits shall be its height. Its horns shall be of one piece with it. ³And you shall overlay its top, its sides all around, and its horns with pure gold; and you shall make for it a ^[ba]molding of gold all around. ⁴Two gold rings you shall make for it, under the molding on both its sides. You shall place them on its two sides, and they will be holders for the poles with which to bear it. ⁵You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. ⁶And you shall put it before the ^(NB)veil that is before the ark of the Testimony, before the ^(NC)mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you.

⁷“Aaron shall burn on it ^(ND)sweet incense every morning; when ^(NE)he tends the lamps, he shall burn incense on it. ⁸And when Aaron lights the lamps ^[bb]at twilight, he shall burn incense on it, a perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations. ⁹You shall not offer ^(NF)strange incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering; nor shall you pour a drink offering on it. ¹⁰And ^(NG)Aaron shall make atonement upon its horns once a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonement; once a year he shall make atonement upon it throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”

The Ransom Money

¹¹Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ¹²^(NH)“When you take the census of the children of Israel for their number, then every man shall give ^(NI)a^[bc] ransom for himself to the Lord, when you number them, that there may be no ^(NJ)plague among them when you number them. ¹³^(NK)This is what everyone among those who are numbered shall give: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary ^(NL)(a shekel is twenty gerahs). ^(NM)The half-shekel shall be an offering to the Lord. ¹⁴Everyone included among those who are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an ^[bd]offering to the Lord. ¹⁵The ^(NN)rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when you give an offering to the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves. ¹⁶And you shall take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and ^(NO)shall ^[be]appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of meeting, that it may be ^(NP)a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves.”

The Bronze Laver

¹⁷Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ¹⁸^(NQ)“You shall also make a ^[bf]laver of bronze, with its base also of bronze, for washing. You shall ^(NR)put it between the tabernacle of meeting and the altar. And you shall put water in it, ¹⁹for Aaron and his sons ^(NS)shall wash their hands and their feet in water from it. ²⁰When they go into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to the Lord, they shall wash with water, lest they die. ²¹So they shall wash their hands and their feet, lest they die. And ^(NT)it shall be a ^[bg]statute forever to them—to him and his descendants throughout their generations.”

The Holy Anointing Oil^(NU)

²²Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ²³“Also take for yourself ^(NV)quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid ^(NW)myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling ^(NX)cane, ²⁴five hundred shekels of ^(NY)cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a ^(NZ)hin of olive oil. ²⁵And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be ^(OA)a holy anointing oil. ²⁶^(OB)With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; ²⁷the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; ²⁸the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. ²⁹You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; ^(OC)whatever touches them must be holy. ³⁰^(OD)And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.

³¹“And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. ³²It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. ^(OE)It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. ³³^(OF)Whoever ^[bh]compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, ^(OG)shall be ^[bi]cut off from his people.’ ”

The Incense^(OH)

³⁴And the Lord said to Moses: ^(OI)“Take sweet spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, and pure frankincense with these sweet spices; there shall be equal amounts of each. ³⁵You shall make of these an incense, a compound ^(OJ)according to the art of the perfumer, salted, pure, and holy. ³⁶And you shall beat some of it very fine, and put some of it before the Testimony in the tabernacle of meeting ^(OK)where I will meet with you. ^(OL)It shall be most holy to you. ³⁷But as for the incense which you shall make, ^(OM)you shall not make any for yourselves, according to its ^[bj]composition. It shall be to you holy for the Lord. ³⁸^(ON)Whoever makes any like it, to smell it, he shall be cut off from his people.”

Artisans for Building the Tabernacle^(OO)

31 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ²^(OP)“See, I have called by name Bezalel the ^(OQ)son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. ³And I have ^(OR)filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, ⁴to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, ⁵in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship.

⁶“And I, indeed I, have appointed with him ^(OS)Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the ^(OT)gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you: ⁷^(OU)the tabernacle of meeting, ^(OV)the ark of the Testimony and ^(OW)the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furniture of the tabernacle— ⁸^(OX)the table and its utensils, ^(OY)the pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, the altar of incense, ⁹^(OZ)the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and ^(PA)the laver and its base— ¹⁰^(PB)the ^[bk]garments of ministry, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, to minister as priests, ¹¹^(PC)and the anointing oil and ^(PD)sweet incense for the holy place. According to all that I have commanded you they shall do.”

The Sabbath Law

¹²And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹³“Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ^(PE)‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who ^(PF)sanctifies^[bl] you. ¹⁴^(PG)You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who ^[bm]profanes it shall surely be put to death; for ^(PH)whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. ¹⁵Work shall be done for ^(PI)six days, but the ^(PJ)seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. ¹⁶Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. ¹⁷It is ^(PK)a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for ^(PL)in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.’ ”

¹⁸And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses ^(PM)two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
