Exodus 21:2

²“When you buy a Hebrew slave, he will serve you for six years and in the seventh year he will go free, without paying anything.^[a]

Exodus 21:2 God did not forbid slavery, but he clearly wanted to set limits on it. Perpetual slavery would not be tolerated.

²“If you buy a Hebrew servant,^(C) he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free,^(D) without paying anything.

²If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
