32 Când poporul a văzut că Moise întârzie să coboare de pe munte, s-a strâns în jurul lui Aaron şi i-a zis:
– Vino şi fă-ne nişte zei[a] care să meargă înaintea noastră, căci nu ştim ce s-a întâmplat cu acest Moise, care ne-a scos din ţara Egiptului!
2 Aaron le-a răspuns:
– Scoateţi cerceii de aur din urechile soţiilor voastre, ale fiilor voştri şi ale fiicelor voastre şi aduceţi-i la mine!
3 Şi toţi şi-au scos cerceii de aur din urechi şi i-au adus la Aaron. 4 El a luat aurul de la ei, l-a bătut cu o unealtă şi a făcut din el un viţel turnat[b]. Ei au zis: „Israele, aceştia sunt zeii tăi care teau scos din ţara Egiptului!“ 5 Când a văzut Aaron lucrul acesta, a zidit un altar înaintea lui şi a zis: „Mâine va fi o sărbătoare în cinstea Domnului!“ 6 A doua zi s-au sculat dis-de-dimineaţă şi au adus arderi de tot şi jertfe de pace[c]. Poporul s-a aşezat să mănânce şi să bea, după care s-a sculat să se distreze.
7 Domnul i-a zis lui Moise:
– Coboară de pe munte, căci poporul tău, pe care l-ai scos din ţara Egiptului, s-a stricat. 8 S-au abătut repede de la calea pe care le-am poruncit-o; şiau turnat un viţel, i s-au închinat, i-au adus jertfe şi au zis: „Israele, iată zeii tăi care te-au scos din ţara Egiptului!“ 9 Am văzut cât de încăpăţânat este acest popor, a continuat Domnul să-i spună lui Moise. 10 Acum, lasă-Mă! Mânia Mea are să se aprindă împotriva lor şi-i voi mistui, iar din tine voi face un neam mare.
11 Dar Moise a căutat faţa Domnului, Dumnezeul său, zicând:
– Doamne, de ce să se aprindă mânia Ta împotriva poporului Tău, pe care l-ai scos din ţara Egiptului cu mare putere şi cu mână puternică? 12 De ce să zică egiptenii: „Spre nenorocirea lor i-a scos, ca să-i omoare prin munţi şi să-i şteargă de pe faţa pământului!“ Întoarce-Te din mânia Ta cea aprigă şi lasă-Te de răul pe care vrei să-l faci poporului Tău. 13 Adu-Ţi aminte de robii Tăi: Avraam, Isaac şi Israel, cărora le-ai jurat pe Tine Însuţi, zicându-le: „Vă voi înmulţi urmaşii[d] ca stelele cerului şi toată această ţară, pe care v-am promis-o, o voi da urmaşilor voştri şi ei o vor moşteni pentru totdeauna.“
14 Atunci Domnul a renunţat la răul pe care avea de gând să-l facă poporului Său.
15 Apoi Moise s-a întors şi s-a coborât de pe munte cu cele două table ale Mărturiei în mâini, table care erau scrise pe ambele părţi, scrise pe faţă şi pe spate. 16 Tablele erau lucrarea lui Dumnezeu şi scrisul era scrisul lui Dumnezeu săpat pe table. 17 Când Iosua a auzit zgomotul făcut de poporul care striga, i-a zis lui Moise:
– Este zgomot de război în tabără.
18 Moise a răspuns:
– Nu este nici strigăt de biruinţă,
nu este nici vaiet de înfrângere,
ci zgomot de petrecere
este ceea ce eu aud.
19 În timp ce se apropia de tabără, Moise a văzut viţelul şi dansul. Atunci s-a aprins de mânie, a aruncat tablele din mâini şi le-a sfărâmat de poalele muntelui. 20 A luat viţelul pe care l-au făcut şi l-a ars în foc. L-a măcinat până s-a făcut cenuşă, după care a împrăştiat cenuşa pe apă şi a dat-o israeliţilor s-o bea.
21 – Ce ţi-a făcut acest popor de ai adus asupra lui un păcat atât de mare? i-a zis Moise lui Aaron.
22 – Să nu se aprindă de mânie domnul meu, i-a răspuns Aaron; tu cunoşti poporul acesta şi ştii că este pornit la rău. 23 Ei mi-au zis: „Vino şi fă-ne nişte zei care să meargă înaintea noastră, căci nu ştim ce s-a întâmplat cu acest Moise, care ne-a scos din ţara Egiptului.“ 24 Atunci eu le-am răspuns: „Oricine are aur să-l scoată!“ Ei mi l-au dat, iar eu l-am aruncat în foc şi din el a ieşit viţelul acesta.
25 Când a văzut Moise că poporul era fără frâu – căci Aaron îl făcuse să fie fără frâu şi de batjocură înaintea duşmanilor lui – 26 a stat la intrarea în tabără şi a zis: „Cine este de partea Domnului, să vină la mine!“ Toţi leviţii s-au adunat în jurul lui.
27 El le-a zis: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Fiecare dintre voi să se încingă cu sabia! Întoarceţi-vă şi mergeţi din poartă în poartă, prin toată tabăra şi fiecare să omoare pe fratele, pe prietenul şi pe vecinul său.»“ 28 Leviţii au făcut aşa cum le-a poruncit Moise şi aproape trei mii de oameni au căzut în ziua aceea. 29 Apoi Moise le-a zis: „Astăzi v-aţi predat[e] Domnului, fiecare cu preţul fiului şi al fratelui său, aducând binecuvântare peste voi.“
Mijlocirea lui Moise
30 În ziua următoare Moise a zis poporului: „Aţi făcut un mare păcat. Acum mă voi sui la Domnul; poate voi putea face ispăşire pentru păcatul vostru.“ 31 Moise s-a întors la Domnul şi I-a zis:
– Oamenii aceştia au săvârşit un mare păcat, făurindu-şi zei din aur. 32 Dar acum, Te rog, iartă-le păcatul! Dacă nu, şterge-mă din cartea pe care ai scris-o.
33 – Pe acela care a păcătuit împotriva Mea îl voi şterge din cartea Mea, i-a răspuns Domnul lui Moise. 34 Acum du-te şi condu poporul spre locul despre care ţi-am spus. Iată că Îngerul Meu va merge înaintea ta. Totuşi, atunci când va veni ziua pedepsei, îi voi pedepsi pentru păcatul lor.
35 Domnul a lovit poporul, pentru ceea ce făcuseră cu viţelul făurit de Aaron.

The Golden Calf
32 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain,(A) they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before(B) us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”(C)
2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings(D) that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol(E) cast in the shape of a calf,(F) fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b](G) Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”(H)
5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival(I) to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings.(J) Afterward they sat down to eat and drink(K) and got up to indulge in revelry.(L)
7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt,(M) have become corrupt.(N) 8 They have been quick to turn away(O) from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol(P) cast in the shape of a calf.(Q) They have bowed down to it and sacrificed(R) to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’(S)
9 “I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked(T) people. 10 Now leave me alone(U) so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy(V) them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”(W)
11 But Moses sought the favor(X) of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?(Y) 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’?(Z) Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster(AA) on your people. 13 Remember(AB) your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self:(AC) ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars(AD) in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land(AE) I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.’” 14 Then the Lord relented(AF) and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.
15 Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law(AG) in his hands.(AH) They were inscribed(AI) on both sides, front and back. 16 The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.(AJ)
17 When Joshua(AK) heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, “There is the sound of war in the camp.”
18 Moses replied:
“It is not the sound of victory,
it is not the sound of defeat;
it is the sound of singing that I hear.”
19 When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf(AL) and the dancing,(AM) his anger burned(AN) and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces(AO) at the foot of the mountain. 20 And he took the calf the people had made and burned(AP) it in the fire; then he ground it to powder,(AQ) scattered it on the water(AR) and made the Israelites drink it.
21 He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?”
22 “Do not be angry,(AS) my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil.(AT) 23 They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’(AU) 24 So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”(AV)
25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock(AW) to their enemies. 26 So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him.
27 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’”(AX) 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29 Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.”
30 The next day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin.(AY) But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement(AZ) for your sin.”
31 So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed!(BA) They have made themselves gods of gold.(BB) 32 But now, please forgive their sin(BC)—but if not, then blot me(BD) out of the book(BE) you have written.”
33 The Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out(BF) of my book. 34 Now go, lead(BG) the people to the place(BH) I spoke of, and my angel(BI) will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish,(BJ) I will punish them for their sin.”
35 And the Lord struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf(BK) Aaron had made.
