The Ninth Plague: Darkness

²¹ Then the Lord said to Moses, ^(A)“Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be ^(B)darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness to be felt.”

¹⁰ The fifth angel poured out his bowl on ^(A)the throne of the beast, and ^(B)its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish ¹¹ and cursed ^(C)the God of heaven for their pain and ^(D)sores. ^(E)They did not repent of their deeds.

⁶ And ^(A)the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—

^17 (A)These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. ^(B)For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.

⁴ For if God did not spare ^(A)angels when they sinned, but ^(B)cast them into hell^[a] and committed them to chains^[b] of gloomy darkness ^(C)to be kept until the judgment;

²¹ They will pass through the land,^[a] greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against^[b] their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. ^22 (A)And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into ^(B)thick darkness.
