7 L’empereur et Haman arrivèrent donc pour festoyer avec l’impératrice Esther. 2 Ce deuxième jour, pendant que l’on buvait le vin, l’empereur demanda de nouveau à Esther : Dis-moi quelle est ta requête, impératrice Esther ? Elle te sera accordée. Quelle est ta demande ? Même si c’est la moitié de mon empire, tu l’obtiendras.
3 L’impératrice Esther répondit : Si l’empereur veut m’accorder une faveur, si l’empereur le veut bien, que la vie sauve me soit accordée, c’est là ma requête. Que la vie sauve soit aussi accordée à mon peuple, telle est ma demande. 4 En effet, moi et mon peuple, nous avons été livrés pour être massacrés, tués et exterminés. Si nous avions seulement été vendus[a] comme esclaves et servantes, j’aurais gardé le silence ; car, dans ce cas, notre infortune ne vaudrait pas la peine que l’on importune l’empereur[b].
5 Alors l’empereur Xerxès demanda à l’impératrice Esther : Qui est-il, celui qui a eu l’audace de concevoir un tel dessein ? Où est-il ?
6 Esther répondit : Le persécuteur, l’ennemi, c’est Haman, ce misérable !
Alors Haman fut épouvanté, devant l’empereur et l’impératrice. 7 Furieux, l’empereur laissa son vin, se leva et sortit dans le jardin du palais. Haman, voyant bien que, dans l’esprit de l’empereur, son malheur était décidé, resta là pour implorer l’impératrice Esther pour sa vie. 8 L’empereur revint du jardin à la salle du festin au moment où Haman se laissait tomber sur le divan où Esther était allongée. Du coup, l’empereur s’écria : Veut-il en plus faire violence à l’impératrice en ma présence dans mon palais ?
A peine l’empereur eut-il prononcé ces mots que l’on recouvrit la tête[c] de Haman. 9 Harbona, l’un des eunuques, dit alors devant l’empereur : Il y a justement cette potence que Haman a fait faire pour Mardochée, qui a parlé pour le bien de l’empereur. Elle se trouve dans la cour de Haman et elle a vingt-cinq mètres de haut.
L’empereur ordonna : Qu’on l’y pende !
10 On pendit donc Haman à la potence qu’il avait préparée pour Mardochée. Alors la colère de l’empereur s’apaisa.

2 And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.
3 Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:
4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.
5 Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?
6 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.
7 And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.
8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
9 And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.
10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

1 So the king and Haman went to dine with Queen Esther. 2 And once again, on the second day as they were having wine, the king asked, “Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given you. What is your request? Even if it is for half my kingdom, it will be granted you.”
3 Queen Esther replied, “If I have found favor with you, O king, and if it pleases your majesty, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. 4 For I and my people have been handed over to destruction, slaughter, and extinction. If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have not said anything, because such distress would not be reason enough to disturb the king.”[a]
5 Then King Ahasuerus asked Queen Esther, “Who is it and where is the one who has done such a thing?”
6 Esther replied, “Our enemy is this wicked man Haman.”
In terror, Haman faced the king and queen. 7 The king got up in a rage, left his wine, and went out into the palace garden. But Haman stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life, since he feared that the king had already decided his fate.
8 So Haman threw himself upon the couch on which Esther was reclining. At that very moment the king was just returning from the palace garden to the banquet hall. The king exclaimed: “Will he also violate the queen while she is with me in my own house?”
The words were scarcely out of the king’s mouth when Haman’s face was covered. 9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs who attended the king, said, “There is a gibbet fifty cubits high at Haman’s house. Haman prepared it for Mordecai, who warned your majesty about the plot.”
The king said, “Hang him on it.” 10 So they hanged Haman on the gibbet he had prepared for Mordecai, and the king’s anger cooled down.

7 De koning en Haman kwamen naar Esters feestmaaltijd. 2 Toen ze na het eten wijn zaten te drinken, zei de koning ook deze tweede dag tegen Ester: "Wat wil je me vragen, koningin Ester? Vraag wat je wil, en ik zal het je geven. Al is het de helft van mijn koninkrijk." 3 Toen antwoordde koningin Ester: "Ik smeek u, mijn heer de koning, om mij en mijn volk van de dood te redden. 4 Want we zijn verkocht en we zullen worden vermoord. Mijn volk zal totaal vernietigd worden. Als we als slaven verkocht zouden worden, zou ik niets hebben gezegd. Maar ook dát zou een enorme schade voor de koning zijn geweest, een schade die met geen geldbedrag te vergoeden is." 5 Toen zei koning Ahasveros: "Wie heeft zoiets durven bedenken? En waar is hij?" 6 Ester antwoordde: "Die onderdrukker, die vijand, is Haman, die schurk daar." Haman schrok hevig. 7 De koning liep woedend weg, de tuin van het paleis in. Maar Haman bleef bij de koningin staan om haar te smeken zijn leven te redden. Want hij begreep wel dat de koning vastbesloten was hem hiervoor te laten doden.
8 De koning kwam weer uit de paleistuin. Hij liep de zaal in waar ze wijn hadden zitten drinken. Daar zag hij dat Haman zich had laten neervallen op de bank waarop Ester zat. Toen riep de koning: "Durf je ook nog de koningin in mijn eigen paleis te bedreigen?" En op zijn bevel werd Haman door een paar dienaren geblinddoekt. 9 Harbona, één van de dienaren, zei tegen de koning: "Haman heeft bij zijn huis een galg van 50 el (25 meter) hoog laten neerzetten voor Mordechai. En dat terwijl Mordechai het leven van de koning heeft gered!" Toen zei de koning: "Hang hem daar zelf aan op!" 10 En ze hingen Haman op aan de galg die hij voor Mordechai had bedoeld. Toen zakte de woede van de koning.

7 So the king and Haman went to Queen Esther’s banquet,(A) 2 and as they were drinking wine(B) on the second day, the king again asked, “Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom,(C) it will be granted.(D)”
3 Then Queen Esther answered, “If I have found favor(E) with you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request. 4 For I and my people have been sold to be destroyed, killed and annihilated.(F) If we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing the king.[a]”
5 King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, “Who is he? Where is he—the man who has dared to do such a thing?”
6 Esther said, “An adversary and enemy! This vile Haman!”
Then Haman was terrified before the king and queen. 7 The king got up in a rage,(G) left his wine and went out into the palace garden.(H) But Haman, realizing that the king had already decided his fate,(I) stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his life.
8 Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet hall, Haman was falling on the couch(J) where Esther was reclining.(K)
The king exclaimed, “Will he even molest the queen while she is with me in the house?”(L)
As soon as the word left the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face.(M) 9 Then Harbona,(N) one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, “A pole reaching to a height of fifty cubits[b](O) stands by Haman’s house. He had it set up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king.”
The king said, “Impale him on it!”(P) 10 So they impaled(Q) Haman(R) on the pole(S) he had set up for Mordecai.(T) Then the king’s fury subsided.(U)
