The Greatness of Mordecai

10 King Ahasuerus imposed tax on the land and on (A)the coastlands of the sea. And all the acts of his power and might, and the full account of the high honor of Mordecai, (B)to which the king advanced him, are they not written in (C)the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia? For Mordecai the Jew was (D)second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was great among the Jews and popular with the multitude of his brothers, for he (E)sought the welfare of his people and spoke peace to all his people.

Job's Character and Wealth

There was a man in the land of (F)Uz whose name was (G)Job, and that man was (H)blameless and upright, one who (I)feared God and (J)turned away from evil. There were born to him (K)seven sons and three daughters. He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all (L)the people of the east. His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and (M)consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and (N)offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and (O)cursed[a] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.

Satan Allowed to Test Job

Now there was a day when (P)the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and (Q)Satan[b] also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From (R)going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you (S)considered my (T)servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, (U)a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put (V)a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have (W)blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But (X)stretch out your hand and (Y)touch all that he has, and he will (Z)curse you (AA)to your face.” 12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Satan Takes Job's Property and Children

13 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 14 and there came a messenger to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and (AB)the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants[c] with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, (AC)“The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, (AD)“The Chaldeans formed (AE)three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, (AF)“Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19 and behold, a great wind came across (AG)the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

20 Then Job arose and (AH)tore his (AI)robe and (AJ)shaved his head (AK)and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, (AL)“Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I (AM)return. The Lord (AN)gave, and the Lord has taken away; (AO)blessed be the name of the Lord.”

22 (AP)In all this Job did not sin or charge God with (AQ)wrong.

Satan Attacks Job's Health

Again (AR)there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still (AS)holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him (AT)without reason.” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. But (AU)stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will (AV)curse you to your face.” And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.”

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome (AW)sores from (AX)the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took (AY)a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in (AZ)the ashes.

Then his wife said to him, “Do you still (BA)hold fast your integrity? (BB)Curse God and die.” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the (BC)foolish women would speak. (BD)Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”[d] (BE)In all this Job did not (BF)sin with his lips.

Job's Three Friends

11 Now when Job's three (BG)friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz (BH)the Temanite, Bildad (BI)the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to (BJ)show him sympathy and comfort him. 12 And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they (BK)tore their robes and sprinkled (BL)dust on their heads toward heaven. 13 And they sat with him on the ground (BM)seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.

Job Laments His Birth

After this Job (BN)opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. And Job said:

(BO)“Let the day perish on which I was born,
    and the night that said,
    ‘A man is conceived.’
Let that day be darkness!
    May God above not seek it,
    nor light shine upon it.
Let gloom and (BP)deep darkness claim it.
    Let clouds dwell upon it;
    let the blackness of the day terrify it.
That night—let thick darkness seize it!
    Let it not rejoice among the days of the year;
    let it not come into the number of the months.
Behold, let that night be barren;
    let no joyful cry enter it.
Let those curse it who curse the day,
    who are ready to rouse up (BQ)Leviathan.
Let the stars of its dawn be dark;
    let it hope for light, but have none,
    nor see (BR)the eyelids of the morning,
10 because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb,
    nor hide trouble from my eyes.

11 “Why (BS)did I not die at birth,
    come out from the womb and expire?
12 Why did (BT)the knees receive me?
    Or why the breasts, that I should nurse?
13 For then I would have lain down and been quiet;
    I would have slept; then I would have been at rest,
14 with kings and counselors of the earth
    who (BU)rebuilt ruins for themselves,
15 or with princes who had gold,
    who filled their houses with silver.
16 Or why was I not as a hidden (BV)stillborn child,
    as infants who never see the light?
17 There the wicked cease from troubling,
    and there the weary are at (BW)rest.
18 There the prisoners are at ease together;
    they hear not the voice of (BX)the taskmaster.
19 The small and the great are there,
    and the slave is free from his master.

20 “Why is light given to him who is in misery,
    and life to (BY)the bitter in soul,
21 who (BZ)long for death, but it comes not,
    and dig for it more than for (CA)hidden treasures,
22 who rejoice exceedingly
    and are glad when they find the grave?
23 Why is light given to a man whose (CB)way is hidden,
    whom God has (CC)hedged in?
24 For my sighing comes (CD)instead of[e] my bread,
    and my (CE)groanings are poured out like water.
25 (CF)For the thing that I fear comes upon me,
    and what I dread befalls me.
26 I am not at ease, nor am I quiet;
    I have no rest, but trouble comes.”

Eliphaz Speaks: The Innocent Prosper

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

“If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
    Yet who can keep from speaking?
Behold, you have instructed many,
    and you have (CG)strengthened the weak hands.
Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,
    and you have (CH)made firm the feeble knees.
But now it has come to you, and you are impatient;
    it touches you, and you are dismayed.
(CI)Is not your fear of God[f] your (CJ)confidence,
    and the integrity of your ways your hope?

“Remember: (CK)who that was innocent ever perished?
    Or where were the upright cut off?
As I have seen, those who (CL)plow iniquity
    and sow trouble reap the same.
By (CM)the breath of God they perish,
    and by (CN)the blast of his anger they are consumed.
10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion,
    (CO)the teeth of the young lions are broken.
11 The strong lion perishes for lack of prey,
    and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.

12 “Now a word was brought to me stealthily;
    my ear received (CP)the whisper of it.
13 Amid (CQ)thoughts from (CR)visions of the night,
    when (CS)deep sleep falls on men,
14 dread came upon me, and trembling,
    which made all my bones shake.
15 A spirit glided past my face;
    the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 It stood still,
    but I could not discern its appearance.
(CT)A form was before my eyes;
    there was silence, then I heard (CU)a voice:
17 (CV)‘Can mortal man be in the right before[g] God?
    Can a man be pure before his Maker?
18 Even in his servants (CW)he puts no trust,
    and his angels he charges with error;
19 how much more those who dwell in houses of (CX)clay,
    whose foundation is in (CY)the dust,
    who are crushed like[h] (CZ)the moth.
20 Between (DA)morning and evening they are beaten to pieces;
    they perish forever (DB)without anyone regarding it.
21 Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them,
    (DC)do they not die, and that without wisdom?’

The Greatness of Mordecai

10 King Xerxes imposed tribute throughout the empire, to its distant shores.(A) And all his acts of power and might, together with a full account of the greatness of Mordecai,(B) whom the king had promoted,(C) are they not written in the book of the annals(D) of the kings of Media and Persia? Mordecai the Jew was second(E) in rank(F) to King Xerxes,(G) preeminent among the Jews, and held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews.(H)

Prologue

In the land of Uz(I) there lived a man whose name was Job.(J) This man was blameless(K) and upright;(L) he feared God(M) and shunned evil.(N) He had seven sons(O) and three daughters,(P) and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,(Q) and had a large number of servants.(R) He was the greatest man(S) among all the people of the East.(T)

His sons used to hold feasts(U) in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified.(V) Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering(W) for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned(X) and cursed God(Y) in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

One day the angels[a](Z) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b](AA) also came with them.(AB) The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(AC)

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(AD) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(AE) and shuns evil.”(AF)

“Does Job fear God for nothing?”(AG) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(AH) around him and his household and everything he has?(AI) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(AJ) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(AK) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(AL)

12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(AM) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(AN)

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(AO) were feasting(AP) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(AQ) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(AR) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(AS) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(AT) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(AU) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(AV) were feasting(AW) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(AX) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(AY) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(AZ)

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(BA) and shaved his head.(BB) Then he fell to the ground in worship(BC) 21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
    and naked I will depart.[c](BD)
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;(BE)
    may the name of the Lord be praised.”(BF)

22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.(BG)

On another day the angels[d](BH) came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them(BI) to present himself before him. And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(BJ)

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.(BK) And he still maintains his integrity,(BL) though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”(BM)

“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has(BN) for his own life. But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,(BO) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(BP)

The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands;(BQ) but you must spare his life.”(BR)

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.(BS) Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.(BT)

His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity?(BU) Curse God and die!”(BV)

10 He replied, “You are talking like a foolish[e] woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”(BW)

In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.(BX)

11 When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite,(BY) Bildad the Shuhite(BZ) and Zophar the Naamathite,(CA) heard about all the troubles that had come upon him, they set out from their homes and met together by agreement to go and sympathize with him and comfort him.(CB) 12 When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him;(CC) they began to weep aloud,(CD) and they tore their robes(CE) and sprinkled dust on their heads.(CF) 13 Then they sat on the ground(CG) with him for seven days and seven nights.(CH) No one said a word to him,(CI) because they saw how great his suffering was.

Job Speaks

After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.(CJ) He said:

“May the day of my birth perish,
    and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’(CK)
That day—may it turn to darkness;
    may God above not care about it;
    may no light shine on it.
May gloom and utter darkness(CL) claim it once more;
    may a cloud settle over it;
    may blackness overwhelm it.
That night—may thick darkness(CM) seize it;
    may it not be included among the days of the year
    nor be entered in any of the months.
May that night be barren;
    may no shout of joy(CN) be heard in it.
May those who curse days[f] curse that day,(CO)
    those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.(CP)
May its morning stars become dark;
    may it wait for daylight in vain
    and not see the first rays of dawn,(CQ)
10 for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me
    to hide trouble from my eyes.

11 “Why did I not perish at birth,
    and die as I came from the womb?(CR)
12 Why were there knees to receive me(CS)
    and breasts that I might be nursed?
13 For now I would be lying down(CT) in peace;
    I would be asleep and at rest(CU)
14 with kings and rulers of the earth,(CV)
    who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,(CW)
15 with princes(CX) who had gold,
    who filled their houses with silver.(CY)
16 Or why was I not hidden away in the ground like a stillborn child,(CZ)
    like an infant who never saw the light of day?(DA)
17 There the wicked cease from turmoil,(DB)
    and there the weary are at rest.(DC)
18 Captives(DD) also enjoy their ease;
    they no longer hear the slave driver’s(DE) shout.(DF)
19 The small and the great are there,(DG)
    and the slaves are freed from their owners.

20 “Why is light given to those in misery,
    and life to the bitter of soul,(DH)
21 to those who long for death that does not come,(DI)
    who search for it more than for hidden treasure,(DJ)
22 who are filled with gladness
    and rejoice when they reach the grave?(DK)
23 Why is life given to a man
    whose way is hidden,(DL)
    whom God has hedged in?(DM)
24 For sighing(DN) has become my daily food;(DO)
    my groans(DP) pour out like water.(DQ)
25 What I feared has come upon me;
    what I dreaded(DR) has happened to me.(DS)
26 I have no peace,(DT) no quietness;
    I have no rest,(DU) but only turmoil.”(DV)

Eliphaz

Then Eliphaz the Temanite(DW) replied:

“If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
    But who can keep from speaking?(DX)
Think how you have instructed many,(DY)
    how you have strengthened feeble hands.(DZ)
Your words have supported those who stumbled;(EA)
    you have strengthened faltering knees.(EB)
But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged;(EC)
    it strikes(ED) you, and you are dismayed.(EE)
Should not your piety be your confidence(EF)
    and your blameless(EG) ways your hope?

“Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished?(EH)
    Where were the upright ever destroyed?(EI)
As I have observed,(EJ) those who plow evil(EK)
    and those who sow trouble reap it.(EL)
At the breath of God(EM) they perish;
    at the blast of his anger they are no more.(EN)
10 The lions may roar(EO) and growl,
    yet the teeth of the great lions(EP) are broken.(EQ)
11 The lion perishes for lack of prey,(ER)

12 “A word(ET) was secretly brought to me,
    my ears caught a whisper(EU) of it.(EV)
13 Amid disquieting dreams in the night,

14 fear and trembling(EX) seized me

15 A spirit glided past my face,

16 It stopped,

A form stood before my eyes,

17 ‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God?(FB)

19 how much more those who live in houses of clay,(FF)
    whose foundations(FG) are in the dust,(FH)
    who are crushed(FI) more readily than a moth!(FJ)
20 Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces;
    unnoticed, they perish forever.(FK)
21 Are not the cords of their tent pulled up,(FL)

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought (A)always to pray and not (B)lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who (C)neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, (D)‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And (E)will not God give justice to (F)his elect, (G)who cry to him day and night? (H)(I)Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them (J)speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, (K)will he find faith on earth?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

He also told this parable to some (L)who trusted (M)in themselves that they were righteous, (N)and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men (O)went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, (P)standing by himself, prayed[a] (Q)thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 (R)I fast twice a week; (S)I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (T)standing far off, (U)would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but (V)beat his breast, saying, ‘God, (W)be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For (X)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Let the Children Come to Me

15 (Y)Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they (Z)rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, (AA)“Let the children come to me, and (AB)do not hinder them, (AC)for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 (AD)Truly, I say to you, whoever does not (AE)receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

The Rich Ruler

18 (AF)And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to (AG)inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: (AH)‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, (AI)“All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. (AJ)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have (AK)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 (AL)But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, (AM)“How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter (AN)the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter (AO)the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But he said, (AP)“What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28 And Peter said, “See, (AQ)we have left our homes and followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, (AR)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers[b] or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive (AS)many times more (AT)in this time, and in (AU)the age to come eternal life.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

31 (AV)And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, (AW)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (AX)everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be (AY)delivered over to the Gentiles and will be (AZ)mocked and shamefully treated and (BA)spit upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on (BB)the third day he will rise.” 34 (BC)But they understood none of these things. (BD)This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar

35 (BE)As he drew near to Jericho, (BF)a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. 37 They told him, (BG)“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, (BH)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who were in front (BI)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41 (BJ)“What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; (BK)your faith has (BL)made you well.” 43 And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, (BM)glorifying God. And (BN)all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.(A) He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice(B) against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(C)

And the Lord(D) said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out(E) to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man(F) comes,(G) will he find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

To some who were confident of their own righteousness(H) and looked down on everyone else,(I) Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray,(J) one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself(K) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast(L) twice a week and give a tenth(M) of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast(N) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’(O)

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(P)

The Little Children and Jesus(Q)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(R) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(S)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(T)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a](U)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor,(V) and you will have treasure in heaven.(W) Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!(X) 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”(Y)

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”(Z)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come(AA) eternal life.”(AB)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(AC)

31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem,(AD) and everything that is written by the prophets(AE) about the Son of Man(AF) will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles.(AG) They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him(AH) and kill him.(AI) On the third day(AJ) he will rise again.”(AK)

34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.(AL)

A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight(AM)

35 As Jesus approached Jericho,(AN) a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”(AO)

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David,(AP) have mercy(AQ) on me!”

39 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”(AR)

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”(AS) 43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.(AT)
