Il pruno ardente; la chiamata di Mosè
3 (A)Mosè pascolava il gregge di Ietro suo suocero, sacerdote di Madian, e, guidando il gregge oltre il deserto, giunse alla montagna di Dio, a Oreb. 2 L’angelo del Signore gli apparve in una fiamma di fuoco, in mezzo a un pruno. Mosè guardò, ed ecco il pruno era tutto in fiamme, ma non si consumava.
3 Mosè disse: «Ora voglio andare da quella parte a vedere questa grande visione e come mai il pruno non si consuma!» 4 Il Signore vide che egli si era mosso per andare a vedere. Allora Dio lo chiamò di mezzo al pruno e disse: «Mosè! Mosè!» Ed egli rispose: «Eccomi». 5 Dio disse: «Non ti avvicinare qua; togliti i calzari dai piedi, perché il luogo sul quale stai è suolo sacro». 6 Poi aggiunse: «Io sono il Dio di tuo padre, il Dio di Abraamo, il Dio d’Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe[a]». Mosè allora si nascose la faccia, perché aveva paura di guardare Dio.
7 Il Signore disse: «Ho visto, ho visto l’afflizione del mio popolo che è in Egitto e ho udito il grido che gli strappano i suoi oppressori; infatti conosco i suoi affanni. 8 Sono sceso per liberarlo dalla mano degli Egiziani e per farlo salire da quel paese in un paese buono e spazioso, in un paese nel quale scorre il latte e il miele, nel luogo dove sono i Cananei, gli Ittiti, gli Amorei, i Ferezei, gli Ivvei e i Gebusei. 9 E ora, ecco, le grida dei figli d’Israele sono giunte a me; e ho anche visto l’oppressione con cui gli Egiziani li fanno soffrire. 10 Or dunque va’; io ti mando dal faraone perché tu faccia uscire dall’Egitto il mio popolo, i figli d’Israele».
11 Mosè disse a Dio: «Chi sono io per andare dal faraone e far uscire dall’Egitto i figli d’Israele?» 12 E Dio disse: «Va’, perché io sarò con te. Questo sarà il segno che sono io che ti ho mandato: quando avrai fatto uscire il popolo dall’Egitto, voi servirete Dio su questo monte».
La missione di Mosè
13 (B)Mosè disse a Dio: «Ecco, quando sarò andato dai figli d’Israele e avrò detto loro: “Il Dio dei vostri padri mi ha mandato da voi”, se essi dicono: “Qual è il suo nome?” che cosa risponderò loro?» 14 Dio disse a Mosè: «Io sono colui che sono». Poi disse: «Dirai così ai figli d’Israele: “L’io sono mi ha mandato da voi”». 15 Dio disse ancora a Mosè: «Dirai così ai figli d’Israele: “Il Signore[b], il Dio dei vostri padri, il Dio di Abraamo, il Dio d’Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe mi ha mandato da voi”. Tale è il mio nome in eterno; così sarò invocato di generazione in generazione. 16 Va’, raduna gli anziani d’Israele e di’ loro: “Il Signore, il Dio dei vostri padri, il Dio di Abraamo, d’Isacco e di Giacobbe mi è apparso, dicendo: ‘Certo, io vi ho visitati, ho visto quello che vi fanno in Egitto 17 e ho detto: Io vi farò uscire dall’Egitto, dove siete maltrattati, verso il paese dei Cananei, degli Ittiti, degli Amorei, dei Ferezei, degli Ivvei e dei Gebusei, in un paese nel quale scorre il latte e il miele’”. 18 Essi ubbidiranno alla tua voce e tu, con gli anziani d’Israele, andrai dal re d’Egitto e gli direte: “Il Signore, il Dio degli Ebrei, ci è venuto incontro; perciò lasciaci andare per tre giornate di cammino nel deserto, per offrire sacrifici al Signore, nostro Dio”. 19 Io so che il re d’Egitto non vi concederà di andare, se non forzato da una mano potente. 20 Io stenderò la mia mano e colpirò l’Egitto con tutti i miracoli che io farò in mezzo a esso; dopo questo, vi lascerà andare. 21 Farò sì che questo popolo trovi favore presso gli Egiziani e, quando ve ne andrete, non ve ne andrete a mani vuote; 22 ma ogni donna domanderà alla sua vicina e alla sua coinquilina degli oggetti d’argento, degli oggetti d’oro e dei vestiti. Voi li metterete addosso ai vostri figli e alle vostre figlie, e così spoglierete gli Egiziani».

The Burning Bush
3 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the (A)mountain of God. 2 (B)And (C)the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, (D)God called to him (E)out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; (F)take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, (G)“I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for (H)he was afraid to look at God.
7 Then the Lord said, (I)“I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their (J)taskmasters. I know their sufferings, 8 and (K)I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and (L)to bring them up out of that land to a (M)good and broad land, a land (N)flowing with milk and honey, to the place of (O)the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 And now, behold, (P)the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the (Q)oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 (R)Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, (S)“Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 He said, (T)“But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, (U)you shall serve God on this mountain.”
13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”[a] And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: (V)‘I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord,[b] the (W)God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is (X)my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. 16 Go and (Y)gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, (Z)“I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt, 17 and I promise that (AA)I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land (AB)flowing with milk and honey.”’ 18 And (AC)they will listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel (AD)shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has (AE)met with us; and now, please let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt (AF)will not let you go unless compelled (AG)by a mighty hand.[c] 20 So (AH)I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with (AI)all the wonders that I will do in it; (AJ)after that he will let you go. 21 And (AK)I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and when you go, you shall not go empty, 22 but each woman shall ask of her neighbor, and any woman who lives in her house, for (AL)silver and gold jewelry, and for clothing. You shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So (AM)you shall plunder the Egyptians.”

Moses and the Burning Bush
3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,(C) the mountain(D) of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord(E) appeared to him in flames of fire(F) from within a bush.(G) Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”
4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called(H) to him from within the bush,(I) “Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.”(J)
5 “Do not come any closer,”(K) God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”(L) 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father,[a] the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”(M) At this, Moses hid(N) his face, because he was afraid to look at God.(O)
7 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen(P) the misery(Q) of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned(R) about their suffering.(S) 8 So I have come down(T) to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land,(U) a land flowing with milk and honey(V)—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites(W) and Jebusites.(X) 9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing(Y) them. 10 So now, go. I am sending(Z) you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”(AA)
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I(AB) that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 And God said, “I will be with you.(AC) And this will be the sign(AD) to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you[b] will worship God on this mountain.(AE)”
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’(AF) Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.[c] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am(AG) has sent me to you.’”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord,[d] the God of your fathers(AH)—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob(AI)—has sent me to you.’
16 “Go, assemble the elders(AL) of Israel and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(AM)—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen(AN) what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt(AO) into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’(AP)
18 “The elders of Israel will listen(AQ) to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews,(AR) has met(AS) with us. Let us take a three-day journey(AT) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices(AU) to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand(AV) compels him. 20 So I will stretch out my hand(AW) and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders(AX) that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.(AY)
21 “And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed(AZ) toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed.(BA) 22 Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver(BB) and gold(BC) and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder(BD) the Egyptians.”(BE)
