12 Acuérdate de tu Creador ahora que eres joven. No esperes a que vengan los días malos, y a que lleguen los años en que digas: «Vivir tanto no es motivo de regocijo.»
2 Hazlo antes de que el sol se oscurezca, y la luna y las estrellas dejen de brillar, y las nubes se disipen después de la lluvia.
3 Hazlo antes de que tiemblen los guardianes de la casa, y se encorven los guerreros, y disminuya el número de las molineras, y queden a oscuras los que miran por las ventanas.
4 Hazlo antes de que se cierren las puertas que dan a la calle, y el ruido del molino deje de oírse.
Hazlo antes de que las aves eleven sus trinos y ninguno de sus cantos pueda escucharse.
5 Luego vendrá el temor por las alturas y se experimentará terror en el camino; entonces el blanco almendro florecerá, la langosta resultará una carga, y hasta el apetito se perderá, porque el hombre va camino a su última morada, y por la calle andarán los que llorarán su muerte.
6 Hazlo antes de que se reviente la cadena de plata y se rompa la vasija de oro, y el cántaro se quiebre junto a la fuente, y junto al pozo se venza la polea. 7 Entonces el polvo volverá a la tierra, de donde fue tomado, y el espíritu volverá a Dios, que lo dio.
8 ¡Vanidad de vanidades! ¡Todo es vanidad!

Deberes del hombre
9 Mientras más sabio llegó a ser el Predicador, más conocimientos impartió a la gente. Ponderó, escudriñó y compuso muchos proverbios. 10 Además, el Predicador se esforzó por hallar palabras agradables y por escribir con precisión palabras verdaderas.
11 Las palabras de los sabios son como aguijones, y el conjunto de las palabras de los maestros, impartidas por un solo guía, son como clavos bien hincados.
12 Hijo mío, además de lo antes dicho, toma en cuenta que nunca se acaba de escribir muchos libros, y que el cuerpo se cansa de tanto estudiar. 13 Todo este discurso termina en lo siguiente: Teme a Dios, y cumple sus mandamientos. Eso es el todo del hombre. 14 Por lo demás, Dios habrá de juzgar toda obra, buena o mala, junto con toda acción encubierta.

12 Remember(A) your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(B) come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
2 before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
3 when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
4 when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;(C)
5 when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(D)
and mourners(E) go about the streets.
6 Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
7 and the dust returns(F) to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God(G) who gave it.(H)
The Conclusion of the Matter
9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.(K) 10 The Teacher(L) searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.(M)
11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails(N)—given by one shepherd.[b] 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.
Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.(O)

12 Dar adu-ţi(A) aminte de Făcătorul tău în zilele tinereţii tale, până nu vin zilele cele rele şi până nu se apropie anii când vei zice: „Nu găsesc nicio plăcere în ei”; 2 până nu se întunecă soarele şi lumina, luna şi stelele şi până nu se întorc norii îndată după ploaie; 3 până nu încep să tremure paznicii casei (mâinile) şi să se încovoaie cele tari (picioarele); până nu se opresc cei ce macină (dinţii), căci s-au împuţinat; până nu se întunecă cei ce se uită pe ferestre (ochii); 4 până nu se închid cele două uşi dinspre uliţă (buzele); când uruitul morii slăbeşte, te scoli la ciripitul unei păsări, glasul tuturor cântăreţelor(B) se aude înăbuşit, 5 te temi de orice înălţime şi te sperii pe drum; până nu înfloreşte migdalul cu peri albi şi de abia se târăşte lăcusta; până nu-ţi trec poftele, căci omul merge spre casa(C) lui cea veşnică, şi bocitorii(D) cutreieră uliţele; 6 până nu se rupe funia de argint, până nu se sfărâmă vasul de aur, până nu se sparge găleata la izvor şi până nu se strică roata de la fântână; 7 până nu se(E) întoarce ţărâna în pământ, cum a fost, şi(F) până nu se întoarce duhul la Dumnezeu, care(G) l-a dat. 8 O, deşertăciune a deşertăciunilor, zice Eclesiastul; totul este deşertăciune! 9 Pe lângă faptul că Eclesiastul a fost înţelept, el a mai învăţat şi ştiinţa pe popor, a cercetat, a adâncit şi a întocmit(H) un mare număr de zicători. 10 Eclesiastul a căutat să afle cuvinte plăcute şi să scrie întocmai cuvintele adevărului. 11 Cuvintele înţelepţilor sunt ca nişte bolduri şi, strânse la un loc, sunt ca nişte cuie bătute, date de un singur stăpân. 12 Încolo, fiule, ia învăţătură din aceste lucruri; dacă ai voi să faci o mulţime de cărţi, să ştii că n-ai mai isprăvi, şi multă(I) învăţătură oboseşte trupul. 13 Să ascultăm dar încheierea tuturor învăţăturilor: Teme-te(J) de Dumnezeu şi păzeşte poruncile Lui. Aceasta este datoria oricărui om. 14 Căci Dumnezeu va aduce orice(K) faptă la judecată, şi judecata aceasta se va face cu privire la tot ce este ascuns, fie bine, fie rău.
