12 Acuérdate, pues, de tu Creador(A) en los días de tu juventud,
Antes que vengan los días malos(B),
Y se acerquen los años en que digas:
«No tengo en ellos placer».
2 Antes que se oscurezcan el sol y la luz,
La luna y las estrellas(C),
Y las nubes vuelvan tras la lluvia;
3 El día cuando tiemblen los guardas de la casa
Y los fuertes se encorven(D),
Las que muelen estén ociosas porque son pocas,
Y se nublen(E) los que miran por las ventanas[a].
4 Cuando además se cierren las puertas de la calle
Por ser bajo el sonido del molino(F),
Y se levante uno al canto del ave,
Y todas las hijas del canto sean abatidas(G);
5 Se temerá a la altura y a los terrores en el camino.
Cuando florezca el almendro, se arrastre la langosta y la alcaparra pierda su efecto[b];
Porque el hombre va a su morada eterna(H)
Mientras los del duelo(I) andan por la calle.
6 Acuérdate de Él antes que se rompa[c] el hilo de plata,
Se quiebre el cuenco de oro(J),
Se rompa el cántaro junto a la fuente,
Y se haga pedazos la rueda junto al pozo;
7 Entonces el polvo volverá a la tierra como lo que era(K),
Y el espíritu volverá a Dios(L) que lo dio(M).
8 «Vanidad de vanidades», dice el Predicador, «todo es vanidad(N)».
Conclusión
9 El Predicador, además de ser sabio, enseñó también sabiduría al pueblo; y reflexionó, investigó y compuso muchos proverbios(O). 10 El Predicador trató de encontrar palabras agradables(P), y de escribir correctamente palabras de verdad(Q).
11 Las palabras de los sabios(R) son como aguijones(S), y como clavos(T) bien clavados las de los maestros de estas colecciones, dadas por un Pastor. 12 Pero además de esto, hijo mío, estate prevenido: el hacer muchos libros no tiene fin(U), y demasiada dedicación a ellos es fatiga del cuerpo[d](V).
13 La conclusión, cuando todo se ha oído, es esta:

antes que dejen de brillar
el sol, la luna y las estrellas.
Acuérdate de tu creador
ahora que después de la lluvia
las nubes siguen cargadas.
3 Llegará el día en que tiemblen
los guardianes del palacio;
llegará el día en que se doblen
los héroes de mil batallas.
Cuando llegue ese día,
habrá tan pocas molineras
que dejarán de moler;
las que espían por las ventanas
dejarán de asomarse a la calle;
4 las puertas de la casa
se cerrarán por completo;
el ruido del molino
parecerá perder fuerza,
y el canto de los pájaros
dejará de escucharse.
5 Cuando llegue ese día,
te darán miedo las alturas
y los peligros del camino.
Tu almendro echará flores blancas,
el saltamontes y la alcaparra
te resultarán una carga,
y no te servirán de nada.
Cuando llegue ese día,
irás camino al lugar
de donde ya no volverás,
y en la calle te rodearán
los que lamenten tu muerte.
6 Acuérdate de tu creador
antes que se hagan pedazos
el cordón de plata
y la vasija de oro;
antes que el cántaro
se estrelle contra la fuente
y la polea del pozo
se parta en mil pedazos.
7 Cuando llegue ese día,
volverás a ser polvo,
porque polvo fuiste,
y el espíritu volverá a Dios,
pues él fue quien lo dio.
8 Yo, el Predicador, declaro:
¡En esta vida nada tiene sentido!
¡Todo es una ilusión!
Palabras finales
9 Entre otras cosas, el Predicador se dedicó a enseñar a otros todo lo que sabía. Todo lo estudiaba con cuidado y lo investigaba a fondo. Además, hizo una gran colección de proverbios. 10 Siempre procuró expresar sus ideas de la mejor manera posible, y escribirlas con palabras claras y verdaderas.
11 Cuando los sabios hablan, sus palabras son como la vara que guía al buey. Sus colecciones de proverbios vienen de Dios, y son como las estacas que sostienen la tienda de campaña. 12 Pero yo les recomiendo a los jóvenes tener presente esto: ponerse a escribir muchos libros es cuento de nunca acabar, y ponerse a leerlos es un trabajo muy agotador.
13 Puedo terminar este libro diciendo que ya todo está dicho. Todo lo que debemos hacer es alabar a Dios y obedecerlo. 14 Un día Dios nos llamará a cuentas por todo lo que hayamos hecho, tanto lo bueno como lo malo, aunque creamos que nadie nos vio hacerlo.

12 Remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years draw near when you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”; 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return with[a] the rain; 3 in the day when the guards of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the women who grind cease working because they are few, and those who look through the windows see dimly; 4 when the doors on the street are shut, and the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the sound of a bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low;(A) 5 when one is afraid of heights, and terrors are in the road; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along,[b] and the caper bud falls; because all must go to their eternal home, and the mourners will go about the streets;(B) 6 before the silver cord is snapped,[c] and the golden bowl is broken, and the pitcher is broken at the fountain, and the wheel broken at the cistern, 7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the breath[d] returns to God who gave it.(C) 8 Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher; all is vanity.
Epilogue
9 Besides being wise, the Teacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs.(D) 10 The Teacher sought to find pleasing words, and he wrote words of truth plainly.(E)
11 The sayings of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings that are given by one shepherd.[e](F) 12 Of anything beyond these, my child, beware. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments, for that is the whole duty of everyone.(G) 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including[f] every secret thing, whether good or evil.(H)

12 Remember(A) your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble(B) come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
2 before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;
3 when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;
4 when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;(C)
5 when people are afraid of heights
and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
and the grasshopper drags itself along
and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home(D)
and mourners(E) go about the streets.
6 Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,
7 and the dust returns(F) to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God(G) who gave it.(H)
The Conclusion of the Matter
9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.(K) 10 The Teacher(L) searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.(M)
11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails(N)—given by one shepherd.[b] 12 Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.
Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.(O)

2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:
6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
