2 I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth; [a]therefore enjoy [b]pleasure: and, behold, this also was vanity. 2 I said of laughter, It is mad; and of mirth, What doeth it? 3 I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet [c]guiding me with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven [d]all the days of their life. 4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards; 5 I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit; 6 I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the forest where trees were reared; 7 I bought men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem; 8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces; I gat me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, [e]musical instruments, and that of all sorts. 9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom [f]remained with me. 10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor; and this was my portion from all my labor. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun. 12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh [g]after the king? even that which hath been done long ago. 13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. 14 The wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all. 15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then said I in my heart, that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how doth the wise man die even as the fool! 17 So I hated life, because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind. 18 And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. 19 And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor wherein I had labored under the sun. 21 For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with [h]skilfulness; yet to a man that hath not labored therein shall he [i]leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 For what hath a man of all his labor, and of the [j]striving of his heart, wherein he laboreth under the sun? 23 For all his days are but sorrows, and his travail is grief; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity. 24 There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God. 25 For who can eat, or who can [k]have enjoyment, [l]more than I? 26 For to the man that pleaseth him God giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that pleaseth God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

The Vanity of Self-Indulgence
2 I (A)said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity.[a] 2 I (B)said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?” 3 I (C)searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my heart still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on (D)folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. 4 I made great works. I (E)built houses and planted (F)vineyards for myself. 5 I made myself (G)gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. 6 I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves, and had (H)slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of (I)herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. 8 I also gathered for myself silver and (J)gold and the treasure of (K)kings and (L)provinces. I got (M)singers, both men and women, and many (N)concubines,[b] the delight of the sons of man.
9 So I became great and (O)surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my (P)wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart (Q)found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my (R)reward for all my toil. 11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was (S)vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing (T)to be gained under the sun.
The Vanity of Living Wisely
12 (U)So I turned to consider (V)wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only (W)what has already been done. 13 Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. 14 (X)The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the (Y)same event happens to all of them. 15 Then I said in my heart, (Z)“What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise as of the fool there is (AA)no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. (AB)How the wise dies just like the fool! 17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for (AC)all is vanity and a striving after wind.
The Vanity of Toil
18 I hated (AD)all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must (AE)leave it to the man who will come after me, 19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I (AF)turned about and gave my heart up to despair (AG)over all the toil of my labors under the sun, 21 because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 What has a man from (AH)all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? 23 For (AI)all his days are full of sorrow, and his (AJ)work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.
24 (AK)There is nothing better for a person than that he should (AL)eat and drink and find enjoyment[c] in his toil. This also, I saw, is (AM)from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him[d] who can eat or who can have enjoyment? 26 For to the one who pleases him (AN)God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given (AO)the business of gathering and collecting, (AP)only to give to one who pleases God. (AQ)This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

2 También me dije a mí mismo: «Ahora voy a hacer la prueba divirtiéndome; voy a darme buena vida.» ¡Pero hasta eso resultó vana ilusión! 2 Y concluí que la risa es locura y que el placer de nada sirve.
3 Con mi mente bajo el control de la sabiduría, quise probar el estímulo del vino, y me entregué a él para saber si eso es lo que más le conviene al hombre durante sus contados días en este mundo.
4 Realicé grandes obras; me construí palacios; tuve mis propios viñedos. 5 Cultivé mis propios huertos y jardines, y en ellos planté toda clase de árboles frutales. 6 Construí represas de agua para regar los árboles plantados; 7 compré esclavos y esclavas, y aun tuve criados nacidos en mi casa; también tuve más vacas y ovejas que cualquiera otro antes de mí en Jerusalén. 8 Junté montones de oro y plata, tesoros que antes fueron de otros reyes y de otras provincias. Tuve cantores y cantoras, placeres humanos y concubina tras concubina.
9 Fui un gran personaje, y llegué a tener más que todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén. Además de eso, la sabiduría no me abandonaba. 10 Nunca me negué ningún deseo; jamás me negué ninguna diversión. Gocé de corazón con todos mis trabajos, y ese gozo fue mi recompensa.
11 Me puse luego a considerar mis propias obras y el trabajo que me había costado realizarlas, y me di cuenta de que todo era vana ilusión, un querer atrapar el viento, y de que no hay nada de provecho en este mundo.
12 Después me puse a reflexionar sobre la sabiduría, la estupidez y la necedad: ¿Qué más podrá hacer el que reine después de mí, sino lo que ya antes ha sido hecho? 13 Y encontré que es más provechosa la sabiduría que la necedad, así como es más provechosa la luz que la oscuridad.
14 El sabio usa bien los ojos, pero el necio anda a oscuras. Sin embargo, me di cuenta de que a todos les espera lo mismo, 15 y me dije: «Lo que le espera al necio también me espera a mí, así que de nada me sirve tanta sabiduría. ¡Hasta eso es vana ilusión! 16 Porque nunca nadie se acordará ni del sabio ni del necio; con el correr del tiempo todo se olvida, y sabios y necios mueren por igual.»
17 Llegué a odiar la vida, pues todo lo que se hace en este mundo resultaba en contra mía. Realmente, todo es vana ilusión, ¡es querer atrapar el viento! 18 Llegué a odiar también todo el trabajo que había realizado en este mundo, pues todo ello tendría que dejárselo a mi sucesor. 19 Y una cosa era segura: que él, ya fuera sabio o necio, se adueñaría de todo lo que con tanto trabajo y sabiduría logré alcanzar en este mundo. ¡Y esto también es vana ilusión!
20 Al ver lo que yo había hecho en este mundo, lamenté haber trabajado tanto, 21 pues hay quien pone sabiduría, conocimientos y experiencia en su trabajo, tan sólo para dejárselo todo a quien no trabajó para obtenerlo. ¡Y también esto es vana ilusión y una gran injusticia!
22 En fin, ¿qué saca el hombre de tanto trabajar y de tanto preocuparse en este mundo? 23 Toda su vida es de sufrimientos, es una carga molesta; ni siquiera de noche descansa su mente. ¡Y esto también es vana ilusión!
24 Lo mejor que puede hacer el hombre es comer y beber, y disfrutar del fruto de su trabajo, pues he encontrado que también esto viene de parte de Dios. 25 Porque, ¿quién puede comer, o gozar, si no es por él? 26 De hecho, Dios da sabiduría, conocimiento y alegría a quien él mira con buenos ojos; pero al que peca le deja la carga de prosperar y amontonar tesoros para luego dárselos a quien él mira con buenos ojos. ¡También esto es vana ilusión y querer atrapar el viento!
