Ecclesiastes 6:11
New International Version
11 The more the words,
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?
Ecclesiastes 4:16
New International Version
16 There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Ecclesiastes 5:7
New International Version
7 Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.(A)
Hosea 12:1
New International Version
Ecclesiastes 4:8
New International Version
8 There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content(A) with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!
Ecclesiastes 4:1-4
New International Version
Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness
4 Again I looked and saw all the oppression(A) that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed—
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
and they have no comforter.(B)
2 And I declared that the dead,(C)
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.(D)
3 But better than both
is the one who has never been born,(E)
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.(F)
4 And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(G)
Ecclesiastes 3:19
New International Version
19 Surely the fate of human beings(A) is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath[a]; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless.

Ecclesiastes 2:3-11
New International Version
3 I tried cheering myself with wine,(A) and embracing folly(B)—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.
4 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself(C) and planted vineyards.(D) 5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves(E) who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8 I amassed silver and gold(F) for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces.(G) I acquired male and female singers,(H) and a harem[a] as well—the delights of a man’s heart. 9 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem(I) before me.(J) In all this my wisdom stayed with me.
10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;(K)
nothing was gained under the sun.(L)

Ecclesiastes 1:17-18
New International Version
17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom,(A) and also of madness and folly,(B) but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.
Ecclesiastes 1:6-9
New International Version
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
7 All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.(A)
8 All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,(B)
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;(C)
there is nothing new under the sun.
