しいたげと労苦と冷酷さ
4 次に私は、世界中で行われているしいたげと悲しみを見ました。しいたげられている人が涙を流しても、だれも手を貸そうとしません。一方で、しいたげる者たちはしっかりと手を組んでいます。 2 私は、死んだ人のほうが生きている人よりましだと思いました。 3 一番幸福なのは、生まれて来なかった人で、地上の悪を見たことのない人です。
4 次に私は、物事を成功させる原動力がねたみであることを知りました。これもまたむなしいことで、風を追いかけるようなものです。
5-6 愚か者は、いっこうに働こうとせず、
餓死寸前のところをさまよう。
しかし結局は、
むなしいの一語に尽きるような労働を続けるより、
のんびりその日暮らしをするほうがましだ。
7 愚かしく思えることが、もう一つあります。 8 息子も兄弟もいない一人暮らしの人が、さらに金持ちになろうと目の色を変えている場合です。この人は、だれに全財産を残そうというのでしょう。全く割の合わない、憂うつな話です。
9 二人が手を組めば、一人の人の倍以上のことができます。結果から見れば、二人のほうがずっといいのです。 10 二人なら片方が倒れても、もう一方が起こせます。ところが、一人のときに倒れてしまうと、だれにも起こしてもらえず、何とも惨めです。
11 また、寒い夜、二人が一枚の毛布でもかぶって寝れば、お互いの体温で暖かくなります。しかし一人では、どうにも暖まることができません。 12 一人では、攻撃を受けると負けてしまいます。しかし二人なら、背中合わせになって戦うことができ、相手に勝つことができます。三人なら、なおいいのです。三つ撚りの糸は、めったなことでは切れないからです。
地位を得ることはむなしい
13 貧しくても賢い若者は、どんな忠告も受けつけない、年取った愚かな王よりましです。 14 そのような若者は、牢獄から出て立身出世することでしょう。それどころか、生まれが卑しくても、王にさえなれるかもしれません。 15 こんな若者なら、たとい王位を奪うことになっても、人々は喜んで協力するに違いありません。 16 こうして彼は、幾百万もの人の指導者となり、非常に有名になるかもしれません。ところが次の世代の人は、彼を追放してしまいます。これもまたむなしいことで、風を追いかけるようなものです。
神への誓いを果たしなさい
5 1-3 神殿に入るときは、耳をすまして、口は堅くつぐみなさい。神に軽はずみな約束をするのは罪です。それがわからないほど愚かになってはいけません。神は天におられ、私たちは地にいるのですから、ことば数はできるだけ少なくすべきです。
仕事が多いと悪夢にうなされ、
口数が多いと愚かになる。
4 神に、何かをすると誓いを立てたときは、すぐに実行しなさい。神は、愚かな人間を喜ぶことがないからです。神との約束は、どんなことがあっても果たしなさい。 5 何かをすると言いながらしないより、初めから口にしないほうがずっと良いのです。 6-7 約束を果たさないなら、口で罪を犯すことになります。神の使者に、「誓いを立てたのは間違いでした」などと弁解してはいけません。それを聞いて神は腹を立て、あなたの繁栄を奪い去るかもしれないからです。
夢ばかり見ていて実行しないのは愚かで、
むなしいことばが多いと、
滅びを招きます。
そんなことをしないで、神を恐れなさい。
富はむなしい
8 貧しい人が金持ちにいじめられ、国中で正義が踏みにじられているのを見ても、別に驚くにあたりません。どの役人にも上役がいて、その上にさらに高官がいるからです。それが国の政治の仕組みなのです。 9 その全体の上に王が立てられています。その王が国のために献身する王なら、どんなにすばらしいことでしょう。そうした人物だけが国を混乱から救えるのです。
10 金銭を愛する者は、決してこれで満足だということがありません。金さえあれば幸せだという考えは、なんと愚かなことでしょう。 11 収入が多くなれば、それに応じて支出も多くなります。金銭にどんな利益があるというのでしょう。彼らは金銭が指の間からこぼれ落ちていくのを眺めていることしかできないのです。 12 汗水流して働く人は、満腹していようが腹をすかしていようが、ぐっすり眠ることができます。しかし、金満家は不安につきまとわれ、不眠に悩まされます。 13-14 私はまた、ここかしこに深刻な問題があるのに気づきました。せっかくの貯金が危険な投資に使われ、子どもに残す財産もなくなってしまうという現実です。 15 投機に手を出す者は、すぐさま無一文の振り出しに戻ります。 16 これは言ったように、とても深刻な問題です。どんなに働いても、ざるで水をくむようなものであり、風を追うようなものです。せっかく手に入れたものが、全部なくなってしまうのです。 17 残る生涯を暗い気持ちで、失意と挫折感、怒りを持ちながら生きることになります。
18 でも、良いことが少なくとも一つあります。生きている限りは、おいしい物を食べ、上等のワインを飲み、置かれた立場を受け入れ、与えられた仕事がどのようなものであれ、それを楽しむことです。 19-20 主のおかげで財産家になり、健康にも恵まれているとしたら、それこそ申し分のないことです。仕事を楽しみ、与えられた人生に満足することこそ、神からの贈り物です。こういう人は、神から喜びを与えられているのですから、悲しい思いで過去を振り返る必要などありません。
6 1-2 至るところに、悲しい不幸が見られます。ある人は神から巨万の富と名誉を与えられ、欲しいものは何でも手に入る身分でありながら、人生を楽しむだけの健康に恵まれていません。そのため早死にして、全財産を他人の手に渡すことになってしまいます。これは実に悲しむべきことで、やりきれない思いがします。
3 一方でもし、百人の息子と娘に恵まれ、長寿を得ながら、わずかばかりの遺産もなく、満足な葬式さえ出せなかったとしたら、この人は生まれて来なかったほうがよかったかもしれません。 4 たとえその誕生が喜ばれず、闇から闇に葬られ、名前さえつけてもらえず、 5 その存在さえ知られないとしても、死産の子のほうがみじめな老人になるよりずっとましです。 6 何千年生きたとしても、満足することがなければ、生きていることに何の価値があるのでしょう。
7-8 知恵ある者も愚か者も、
食べ物を得るために人生を費やすが、
もうこれで十分だということはない。
そういう意味では、どちらも同じです。しかし、貧しくても知恵ある人は、ずっと良い生活をしています。 9 手の中の一羽の鳥は、やぶの中の二羽より価値があります。あこがれているものを夢見ているだけであればむなしいことで、風を追いかけるようなものです。
10 あらゆるものには定めがあります。それぞれの将来は、ずっと以前からわかっているのです。だから、自分の運命について神と議論しても無駄です。
11 しゃべればしゃべるだけ、口にすることばの意味が薄れてきます。だから、全然しゃべらないほうがましなのです。
12 短くむなしい人生を、どのように過ごすのが最善なのかはだれにもわかりません。死んだ先のことまで考えると、何が最善かを知ることはできません。将来のことがわかる人は一人もいないのです。

Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness
4 Again I looked and saw all the oppression(A) that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed—
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
and they have no comforter.(B)
2 And I declared that the dead,(C)
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.(D)
3 But better than both
is the one who has never been born,(E)
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.(F)
4 And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(G)
5 Fools fold their hands(H)
and ruin themselves.
6 Better one handful with tranquillity
than two handfuls with toil(I)
and chasing after the wind.
7 Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:
8 There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content(J) with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!
9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Advancement Is Meaningless
13 Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. 14 The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. 15 I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16 There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Fulfill Your Vow to God
5 [a]Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.
2 Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.(K)
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.(L)
3 A dream(M) comes when there are many cares,
and many words mark the speech of a fool.(N)
4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it.(O) He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.(P) 5 It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it.(Q) 6 Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? 7 Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore fear God.(R)
Riches Are Meaningless
8 If you see the poor oppressed(S) in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things; for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. 9 The increase from the land is taken by all; the king himself profits from the fields.
10 Whoever loves money never has enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
This too is meaningless.
11 As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
except to feast their eyes on them?
12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet,
whether they eat little or much,
but as for the rich, their abundance
permits them no sleep.(T)
13 I have seen a grievous evil under the sun:(U)
wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,
14 or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when they have children
there is nothing left for them to inherit.
15 Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb,
and as everyone comes, so they depart.(V)
They take nothing from their toil(W)
that they can carry in their hands.(X)
16 This too is a grievous evil:
As everyone comes, so they depart,
and what do they gain,
since they toil for the wind?(Y)
17 All their days they eat in darkness,
with great frustration, affliction and anger.
18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink(Z) and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor(AA) under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions,(AB) and the ability to enjoy them,(AC) to accept their lot(AD) and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.(AE) 20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.(AF)
6 I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind: 2 God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them,(AG) and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.(AH)
3 A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn(AI) child is better off than he.(AJ) 4 It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. 5 Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man— 6 even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?(AK)
7 Everyone’s toil is for their mouth,
yet their appetite is never satisfied.(AL)
8 What advantage have the wise over fools?(AM)
What do the poor gain
by knowing how to conduct themselves before others?
9 Better what the eye sees
than the roving of the appetite.
This too is meaningless,
a chasing after the wind.(AN)
10 Whatever exists has already been named,(AO)
and what humanity is has been known;
no one can contend
with someone who is stronger.
11 The more the words,
the less the meaning,
and how does that profit anyone?
12 For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days(AP) they pass through like a shadow?(AQ) Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?

ダビデは、主がサウルをはじめ多くの敵から彼を救い出した時、この歌を歌いました。
18 主よ。私はどれほど主をお慕いしていることでしょう。
こんなにもすばらしいことをしてくださった主を。
2 主は、安心して身を寄せることのできるとりでです。
誰ひとり、このとりでに入って来て、
私を殺すことはできません。
主は、身を隠すことができる険しい山であり、
私の救い主です。
だれも近づくことのできない岩、安全を守る塔、
また私の盾です。
3 私はただ、主に叫び求めさえすればよいのです。
そうすれば主は、あらゆる敵から助けてくださいます。
ああ、主をほめたたえます。
4 死の鎖が私に巻きつき、
洪水のように滅びが押し寄せてきました。
5 私は罠に落ち、助けてくれる人もなく、
死へと引きずり込む綱の力に抵抗してもがきました。
6 苦しみの中で、私は主の助けを叫び求めました。
その声を、主は天から聞いてくださいました。
叫びは届いたのです。
7 その時、大地は揺れ動き、
山々は震えわななきました。
主の御怒りのためです。
8 主の御口からすさまじい炎が吹き出して
地を焼き尽くし、鼻からは煙が立ち上りました。
9 主は天を切り裂いて降りて来て、
私を救ってくださいました。
御足の下には暗闇がありました。
10 主は力ある天使にまたがり、風を翼とし、
矢のように速く、助けに来てくださいました。
11 暗闇を身にまとい、
一寸先もわからない濃い黒雲に覆われて、
近づいてくださいました。
12 突然、いなずまと雹の嵐を伴った御姿が、
雲間から輝きました。
13 雷のような声が天空にとどろき、
神々の上に君臨する神がお語りになったのです。
なんという雹、なんという火でしょう。
14 主はいなずまを恐怖の矢として放ち、
私の敵をかき乱しました。
あの逃げ惑うさまを見てください。
15 主よ、ご命令のままに海の水は引き、
あなたのすさまじい鼻息で、
海の底はむき出しになりました。
16 主は天から下って来て、
大きな試練から私を助け出してくださいました。
深い海の底から引き上げてくださったのです。
17 敵の手にかかって、手も足も出なかった私。
その私を頑強な敵、私を憎む者から
救い出してくださいました。
18 彼らは、弱りきっている私に襲いかかりました。
しかし、主は私をしっかりと支え、
19 安全な場所へと連れ出してくださいました。
私を喜びとされたからです。
20 正しいことを行い、潔白であったことに
報いてくださったのです。
21 私はご命令に従い、主に背を向けて
罪を犯すようなことはしませんでした。
22 いつも主のおきてを目の前に掲げ、
一つたりとも捨てたりしなかったのです。
23 おきてを守ることに全力を尽くし、
悪行への誘惑を振り払い続けました。
24 それに答えて、主は祝福を下さったのです。
私が正しいことを行い、
純粋な思いを抱いていたことをご存じなのです。
主は私のすべての歩みに
目を留めておられるのですから。
25 主よ。あなたは、恵み深い者に対しては、
なんと恵み深くあられることでしょう。
また、悪の道から引き返す者には、
罰をお加えになりません。
26 心のきよい者には祝福を、
主の道からそれる者には苦痛をお与えになります。
27 謙遜な者をお救いになりますが、
高慢で横柄な者は有罪に定められます。
28 主は、私に明かりをともしてくださいました。
私の神、主は、私を包む闇を
光に変えてくださいました。
29 今や私には、どんなに高い城壁でもよじ登り、
どんなに強力な軍隊に対しても
攻撃する力が与えられています。
30 なんとすばらしい神でしょう。
神はあらゆる点で全く完全です。
そのお約束がすべて真実であることは明らかです。
その背後に隠れる者には盾となってくださいます。
31 私たちの主のほかに、だれが神でありえましょう。
だれが不動の岩でありえましょう。
32 神は私に力をみなぎらせ、
行く先々でお守りくださいます。
33 私の足を、岩山ででもしっかり立つ
野やぎのようにし、
絶壁の上をも安全に導いてくださいます。
34 戦いに備えて私を鍛え、
鉄の弓さえ引く力を与えてくださいます。
35 主の救いは私の盾です。
ああ主よ。右の御手が私を支えています。
主のご温情のおかげで、
私は名の知れた者となりました。
36 主は、私を大またで歩かせ、
しかも足がすべらないようにしてくださいました。
37 私は敵を追撃し、
一人残らず倒すまでは引き返しませんでした。
38 そして、彼らを地面に突き刺しました。
敵は力を失い、私はその首を踏みつけたのです。
39 戦いに臨んで、
頑丈なよろいを着せていただいたおかげです。
敵は私を見ておじけづき、足もとに倒れ伏します。
40 彼らが背を向けて逃げるように仕向けたので、
私は私を憎む者を滅ぼすことができました。
41 大声で助けを求めても、
誰ひとり彼らを助ける者はいませんでした。
そこで、彼らは主に向かって叫びましたが、
返事がありません。
42 私は、ここぞとばかり彼らをちりのように粉々に砕き、
空中高くまき散らしました。
彼らを、床を掃くように掃き捨てました。
43-45 神は、次々と
戦いに勝利をもたらしてくださいました。
諸国の民は私のもとに来て、仕えるようになりました。
私がそれまで知らなかった国民までが、
やって来てひれ伏すのです。
私に会ったこともない外国人が、
いとも簡単に服従します。
彼らは震えながら、とりでから出て来るのです。
46 主は生きておられます。
大いなる救いの岩である神をほめたたえよ。
47 神は私に害を加える者に報復し、
目の前の国々を制圧してくださいます。
48 敵に囲まれた私を助け出して、
手の届かない安全な場所に移し、
猛威をふるう相手から救ってくださいます。
49 ですから、私は主を国々の間でほめたたえます。
50 主から王に定められた私は、
幾度となく、奇跡的に救い出されました。
いつも愛と恵みを注いでいただきました。
主は、私の子孫をも同様に、
お恵みくださることでしょう。

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:
1 I love you, Lord, my strength.(B)
2 The Lord is my rock,(C) my fortress(D) and my deliverer;(E)
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,(F)
my shield[b](G) and the horn[c] of my salvation,(H) my stronghold.
3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,(I)
and I have been saved from my enemies.(J)
4 The cords of death(K) entangled me;
the torrents(L) of destruction overwhelmed me.
5 The cords of the grave coiled around me;
the snares of death(M) confronted me.
6 In my distress(N) I called to the Lord;(O)
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;(P)
my cry came(Q) before him, into his ears.
7 The earth trembled(R) and quaked,(S)
and the foundations of the mountains shook;(T)
they trembled because he was angry.(U)
8 Smoke rose from his nostrils;(V)
consuming fire(W) came from his mouth,
burning coals(X) blazed out of it.
9 He parted the heavens and came down;(Y)
dark clouds(Z) were under his feet.
10 He mounted the cherubim(AA) and flew;

11 He made darkness his covering,(AD) his canopy(AE) around him—
the dark rain clouds of the sky.
12 Out of the brightness of his presence(AF) clouds advanced,
with hailstones(AG) and bolts of lightning.(AH)
13 The Lord thundered(AI) from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded.[d]
14 He shot his arrows(AJ) and scattered the enemy,
with great bolts of lightning(AK) he routed them.(AL)
15 The valleys of the sea were exposed
and the foundations(AM) of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke,(AN) Lord,
at the blast of breath from your nostrils.(AO)
16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.(AP)
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,(AQ)
from my foes, who were too strong for me.(AR)
18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,(AS)
but the Lord was my support.(AT)
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;(AU)
he rescued me because he delighted in me.(AV)
20 The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;(AW)
according to the cleanness of my hands(AX) he has rewarded me.(AY)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;(AZ)
I am not guilty of turning(BA) from my God.
22 All his laws are before me;(BB)
I have not turned away from his decrees.
23 I have been blameless(BC) before him
and have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,(BD)
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25 To the faithful(BE) you show yourself faithful,(BF)
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26 to the pure(BG) you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.(BH)
27 You save the humble(BI)
but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.(BJ)
28 You, Lord, keep my lamp(BK) burning;
my God turns my darkness into light.(BL)
29 With your help(BM) I can advance against a troop[e];
with my God I can scale a wall.
30 As for God, his way is perfect:(BN)
The Lord’s word is flawless;(BO)
he shields(BP) all who take refuge(BQ) in him.
31 For who is God besides the Lord?(BR)
And who is the Rock(BS) except our God?
32 It is God who arms me with strength(BT)
and keeps my way secure.(BU)
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;(BV)
he causes me to stand on the heights.(BW)
34 He trains my hands for battle;(BX)
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You make your saving help my shield,
and your right hand sustains(BY) me;
your help has made me great.
36 You provide a broad path(BZ) for my feet,
so that my ankles do not give way.(CA)
37 I pursued my enemies(CB) and overtook them;
I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
38 I crushed them(CC) so that they could not rise;(CD)
they fell beneath my feet.(CE)
39 You armed me with strength(CF) for battle;
you humbled my adversaries(CG) before me.
40 You made my enemies turn their backs(CH) in flight,
and I destroyed(CI) my foes.
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them(CJ)—
to the Lord, but he did not answer.(CK)
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;(CL)
I trampled them[f] like mud in the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
you have made me the head of nations.(CM)
People I did not know(CN) now serve me,
44 foreigners(CO) cower before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45 They all lose heart;(CP)
they come trembling(CQ) from their strongholds.(CR)
46 The Lord lives!(CS) Praise be to my Rock!(CT)
Exalted be God(CU) my Savior!(CV)
47 He is the God who avenges(CW) me,
who subdues nations(CX) under me,
48 who saves(CY) me from my enemies.(CZ)
You exalted me above my foes;
from a violent man(DA) you rescued me.
49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;(DB)
I will sing(DC) the praises of your name.(DD)

3 私パウロは、今、キリスト・イエスの囚人となって投獄されています。それは、あなたがた外国人も、ユダヤ人と同じように神の家族の一員だと語ったからです。 2-3 私は、外国人に神の恵みを示すという任務を神から受けています。このことについては、前の手紙でも簡単にふれましたから、もうすでにご存じと思います。外国人もまた神の恵みの対象とされているという、この特別の計画を、神が私に明かしてくださったのです。 4 このように申し上げるのは、これらについて私がどう理解しているかをわかっていただくためです。 5 以前、神はこの計画をご自分の民に隠しておられました。しかし今は、聖霊を通して、使徒や預言者たちにはっきりと示しておられます。 6 その特別の計画とは、神の子どもとされた者たちが、外国人もユダヤ人と共に、すべての救いの恩恵を受け継ぐということです。ユダヤ人も外国人も、共に神の教会の一員として招かれています。そして、キリストについての福音と、この方がなされたこととを受け入れる時、キリストによって大いに祝福するという神の約束に、両者ともあずかるのです。
7 神は、そのことをすべての人に伝える光栄ある特権を私に与えてくださいました。また、その務めを果たすに十分な、神の力と賜物をも与えてくださったのです。 8 私はそのような資格の全くない者で、クリスチャンの中で最も役立たずの人間です。それにもかかわらず、キリストのうちにある無限の富が外国人にも与えられるという計画を伝える者として、こんな私が選ばれたのです。 9 それは、万物を造られた神が、世の初めからの計画どおりに、ご自分が外国人の救い主でもあることを、すべての人に説き明かすためでした。
10 またそれは、天のもろもろの支配者たちに対して、神の全家族――ユダヤ人も外国人も――が教会の中で一つとなっている姿を見せ、神の完全な知恵を示すためです。 11 これこそ、神が主キリスト・イエスを通して、かねてから計画しておられたことなのです。 12 私たちはこのキリストと共にあり、キリストを信じる信仰によって、確信をもって大胆に神の前に出ることができます。 13 ですから、どうか、私がいま体験している苦しみを知って落胆しないでください。この苦しみはあなたがたのためであり、それは、あなたがたにとって名誉となり、励ましとなるはずです。
14-15 神のご計画の深さと広さを思う時、私はひざをかがめて、天上と地上の家族の父である方に祈ります。 16 どうか、父なる神が、その栄光に満ちた無限の富の中から、御霊を通して人を内面から強くする力を、あなたがたに与えてくださいますように。 17 こうしてキリストが、信じるあなたがたの心に住んでくださいますように。 18-19 そして、神の愛がどれほど広く、どれほど高く、どれほど深いかを理解することができますように。さらに、あなたがたがキリストの無限の愛を知って、キリストの愛といのちに満たされますように。

God’s Marvelous Plan for the Gentiles
3 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner(A) of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—
2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me(B) for you, 3 that is, the mystery(C) made known to me by revelation,(D) as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight(E) into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.(F) 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs(G) together with Israel, members together of one body,(H) and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.(I)
7 I became a servant of this gospel(J) by the gift of God’s grace given me(K) through the working of his power.(L) 8 Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people,(M) this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles(N) the boundless riches of Christ,(O) 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery,(P) which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God(Q) should be made known(R) to the rulers and authorities(S) in the heavenly realms,(T) 11 according to his eternal purpose(U) that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God(V) with freedom and confidence.(W) 13 I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.
A Prayer for the Ephesians
14 For this reason I kneel(X) before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches(Y) he may strengthen you with power(Z) through his Spirit in your inner being,(AA) 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts(AB) through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted(AC) and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people,(AD) to grasp how wide and long and high and deep(AE) is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge(AF)—that you may be filled(AG) to the measure of all the fullness of God.(AH)
20 Now to him who is able(AI) to do immeasurably more than all we ask(AJ) or imagine, according to his power(AK) that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.(AL)
