Preparing to Return

21 I proclaimed a fast(A) by the Ahava River,[a] so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask Him for a safe journey for us, our children, and all our possessions. 22 I did this because I was ashamed to ask the king for infantry and cavalry to protect us from enemies during the journey, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is against all who abandon Him.”(B) 23 So we fasted and pleaded with our God about this, and He granted our request.

24 I selected 12 of the leading priests, along with Sherebiah,(C) Hashabiah, and 10 of their brothers. 25 I weighed out to them the silver, the gold, and the articles—the contribution for the house of our God that the king, his counselors, his leaders, and all the Israelites who were present had offered. 26 I weighed out to them 24 tons[b] of silver, silver articles weighing 7,500 pounds,[c] 7,500 pounds[d] of gold, 27 20 gold bowls worth 1,000 gold coins,[e] and two articles of fine gleaming bronze, as valuable as gold.(D) 28 Then I said to them, “You are holy to the Lord, and the articles are holy. The silver and gold are a freewill offering(E) to the Lord God of your fathers. 29 Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the Lord’s house before the leading priests, Levites, and heads of the Israelite families in Jerusalem.” 30 So the priests and Levites took charge of the silver, the gold, and the articles that had been weighed out, to bring them to the house of our God in Jerusalem.(F)

Arrival in Jerusalem

31 We set out from the Ahava River[f] on the twelfth day of the first month to go to Jerusalem. We were strengthened by our God,[g](G) and He protected us from the power of the enemy and from ambush along the way.(H) 32 So we arrived at Jerusalem and rested there for three days.(I) 33 On the fourth day the silver, the gold, and the articles were weighed out in the house of our God into the care of Meremoth the priest, son of Uriah. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him. The Levites Jozabad(J) son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui were also with them. 34 Everything was verified by number and weight, and the total weight was recorded at that time.

35 The exiles who had returned from the captivity(K) offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, and 77 lambs, along with 12 male goats as a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering for the Lord.(L) 36 They also delivered the king’s edicts to the royal satraps and governors of the region west of the Euphrates,(M) so that they would support the people and the house of God.(N)

Israel’s Intermarriage with Pagans

After these things had been done, the leaders approached me and said: “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves(O) from the surrounding peoples whose detestable practices(P) are like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.(Q) Indeed, the Israelite men[h] have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed(R) has become mixed with the surrounding peoples.(S) The leaders[i] and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”(T) When I heard this report, I tore my tunic and robe, pulled out some of the hair from my head and beard, and sat down devastated.(U)

Ezra’s Confession

Everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel(V) gathered around me, because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles,(W) while I sat devastated until the evening offering.(X) At the evening offering, I got up from my humiliation, with my tunic and robe torn. Then I fell on my knees and spread out my hands to Yahweh my God.(Y) And I said:(Z)

My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face toward You, my God, because our iniquities are higher than our heads and our guilt is as high as the heavens.(AA) Our guilt has been terrible from the days of our fathers until the present. Because of our iniquities we have been handed over, along with our kings and priests, to the surrounding kings, and to the sword, captivity, plundering, and open shame,(AB) as it is today. But now, for a brief moment, grace has come from Yahweh our God to preserve a remnant(AC) for us and give us a stake(AD) in His holy place. Even in our slavery, God has given us new life and light to our eyes.(AE) Though we are slaves,(AF) our God has not abandoned us in our slavery. He has extended grace to us in the presence of the Persian kings,(AG) giving us new life, so that we can rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(AH) to give us a wall in Judah and Jerusalem.

10 Now, our God, what can we say in light of[j] this? For we have abandoned the commands 11 You gave through Your servants the prophets, saying: “The land you are entering to possess is an impure land. The surrounding peoples have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness by their impurity and detestable practices.(AI) 12 So do not give your daughters to their sons in marriage or take their daughters for your sons.(AJ) Never seek their peace or prosperity,(AK) so that you will be strong, eat the good things of the land, and leave it as an inheritance to your sons forever.” 13 After all that has happened to us because of our evil deeds and terrible guilt—though You, our God, have punished us less than our sins deserve and have allowed us to survive[k](AL) 14 should we break Your commands again and intermarry with the peoples who commit these detestable practices?(AM) Wouldn’t You become so angry with us that You would destroy us, leaving no survivors?(AN) 15 Lord God of Israel, You are righteous, for we survive as a remnant(AO) today. Here we are before You with our guilt, though no one can stand in Your presence because of this.(AP)

21 There, by the Ahava Canal,(A) I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey(B) for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers(C) and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone(D) who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.(E) 23 So we fasted(F) and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

24 Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah,(G) Hashabiah and ten of their brothers, 25 and I weighed out(H) to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his advisers, his officials and all Israel present there had donated for the house of our God. 26 I weighed out to them 650 talents[a] of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents,[b] 100 talents[c] of gold, 27 20 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics,[d] and two fine articles of polished bronze, as precious as gold.

28 I said to them, “You as well as these articles are consecrated to the Lord.(I) The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your ancestors. 29 Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel.” 30 Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.

31 On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal(J) to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us,(K) and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way. 32 So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.(L)

33 On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out(M) the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth(N) son of Uriah, the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad(O) son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.(P) 34 Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time.

35 Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls(Q) for all Israel,(R) ninety-six rams, seventy-seven male lambs and, as a sin offering,[e] twelve male goats.(S) All this was a burnt offering to the Lord. 36 They also delivered the king’s orders(T) to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates,(U) who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God.(V)

Ezra’s Prayer About Intermarriage

After these things had been done, the leaders came to me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate(W) from the neighboring peoples with their detestable practices, like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites,(X) Ammonites,(Y) Moabites,(Z) Egyptians and Amorites.(AA) They have taken some of their daughters(AB) as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled(AC) the holy race(AD) with the peoples around them. And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness.”(AE)

When I heard this, I tore(AF) my tunic and cloak, pulled hair from my head and beard and sat down appalled.(AG) Then everyone who trembled(AH) at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of this unfaithfulness of the exiles. And I sat there appalled(AI) until the evening sacrifice.

Then, at the evening sacrifice,(AJ) I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands(AK) spread out to the Lord my God and prayed:

“I am too ashamed(AL) and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.(AM) From the days of our ancestors(AN) until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword(AO) and captivity,(AP) to pillage and humiliation(AQ) at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today.

“But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious(AR) in leaving us a remnant(AS) and giving us a firm place[f](AT) in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes(AU) and a little relief in our bondage. Though we are slaves,(AV) our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness(AW) in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(AX) and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.

10 “But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commands(AY) 11 you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: ‘The land you are entering(AZ) to possess is a land polluted(BA) by the corruption of its peoples. By their detestable practices(BB) they have filled it with their impurity from one end to the other. 12 Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them(BC) at any time, that you may be strong(BD) and eat the good things(BE) of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’(BF)

13 “What has happened to us is a result of our evil(BG) deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins deserved(BH) and have given us a remnant like this. 14 Shall we then break your commands again and intermarry(BI) with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us,(BJ) leaving us no remnant(BK) or survivor? 15 Lord, the God of Israel, you are righteous!(BL) We are left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it not one of us can stand(BM) in your presence.(BN)

Immoral Church Members

It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality(A) among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated[a] among the Gentiles(B)—a man is living with his father’s wife.(C) And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief(D) so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation. For though I am absent in body but present in spirit,(E) I have already decided about the one who has done this thing as though I were present. When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus, turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,(F) so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord.(G)

Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast(H) permeates the whole batch of dough?(I) Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch. You are indeed unleavened, for Christ our Passover(J) has been sacrificed.[b] Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old yeast or with the yeast of malice and evil(K) but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Church Discipline

I wrote to you in a letter not to associate(L) with sexually immoral people.(M) 10 I did not mean the immoral people of this world or the greedy(N) and swindlers(O) or idolaters; otherwise you would have to leave the world.(P) 11 But now I am writing[c] you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer[d](Q) who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard(R) or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12 For what business is it of mine to judge(S) outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside? 13 But God judges outsiders. Put away the evil person from among yourselves.(T)[e]

Dealing With a Case of Incest

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.(A) And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning(B) and have put out of your fellowship(C) the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit.(D) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus(E) on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over(F) to Satan(G) for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.(H)

Your boasting is not good.(I) Don’t you know that a little yeast(J) leavens the whole batch of dough?(K) Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.(L) Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread(M) of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate(N) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world(O) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[c](P) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater(Q) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.(R)

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside(S) the church? Are you not to judge those inside?(T) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[d](U)
