The Song of Moses

32 (A)Give ear, O heavens, and let me speak;
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
(B)Let my teaching drop as the rain,
My speech distill as the dew,
(C)As the droplets on the fresh grass
And as the showers on the herb.
(D)For I proclaim the name of the Lord;
(E)Ascribe greatness to our God!
(F)The Rock! His work is perfect,
(G)For all His ways are [a]just;
(H)A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.
[b](I)They have acted corruptly toward Him,
They are not His children, because of their defect;
(J)But are a perverse and crooked generation.
“Do you thus (K)repay the Lord,
(L)O foolish and unwise people?
(M)Is not He your Father who has bought you?
(N)He has made you and established you.
“Remember the days of old,
Consider the years of all generations.
(O)Ask your father, and he will inform you,
Your elders, and they will tell you.
(P)When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,
When He separated the sons of [c]man,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
(Q)According to the number of the sons of Israel.
(R)For the Lord’s portion is His people;
Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.
10 (S)He found him in a desert land,
And in the howling waste of a wilderness;
He encircled him, He cared for him,
He guarded him as (T)the pupil of His eye.
11 (U)Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,
That hovers over its young,
(V)He spread His wings and caught them,
He carried them on His pinions.
12 (W)The Lord alone guided him,
(X)And there was no foreign god with him.
13 (Y)He made him ride on the high places of the earth,
And he ate the produce of the field;
(Z)And He made him suck honey from the rock,
And (AA)oil from the flinty rock,
14 Curds of cows, and milk of the flock,
With fat of lambs,
And rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats,
(AB)With the finest of the wheat—
And of the (AC)blood of grapes you drank wine.

15 (AD)But [d]Jeshurun grew fat and kicked—
You are grown fat, thick, and sleek—
(AE)Then he forsook God (AF)who made him,
And scorned (AG)the Rock of his salvation.
16 (AH)They made Him jealous with strange gods;
(AI)With abominations they provoked Him to anger.
17 (AJ)They sacrificed to demons who were not God,
(AK)To gods whom they have not known,
(AL)New gods who came lately,
Whom your fathers did not dread.
18 “You neglected (AM)the Rock who begot you,
(AN)And forgot the God who gave you birth.

19 (AO)The Lord saw this, and spurned them
(AP)Because of the provocation of His sons and daughters.
20 “Then He said, ‘I will hide My face from them,
(AQ)I will see what their end shall be;
(AR)For they are a perverse generation,
(AS)Sons in whom is no faithfulness.
21 (AT)They have made Me jealous with what is not God;
They have provoked Me to anger with their [e](AU)idols.
(AV)So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people;
I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation,
22 (AW)For a fire is kindled in My anger,
And burns to the lowest part of [f]Sheol,
(AX)And consumes the earth with its yield,
And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 (AY)I will heap misfortunes on them;
(AZ)I will use My arrows on them.
24 (BA)They will be wasted by famine, and consumed by [g]plague
(BB)And bitter destruction;
(BC)And the teeth of beasts I will send upon them,
(BD)With the venom of crawling things of the dust.
25 (BE)Outside the sword will bereave,
And inside terror—
(BF)Both young man and virgin,
The nursling with the man of gray hair.
26 ‘I would have said, “(BG)I will cut them to pieces,
(BH)I will remove the memory of them from men,”
27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy,
That their adversaries would misjudge,
That they would say, “(BI)Our hand is [h]triumphant,
And the Lord has not done all this.”’

28 (BJ)For they are a nation [i]lacking in counsel,
And there is no understanding in them.
29 (BK)Would that they were wise, that they understood this,
(BL)That they would discern their [j]future!
30 (BM)How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their (BN)Rock had sold them,
And the Lord had given them up?
31 “Indeed their rock is not like our Rock,
(BO)Even our enemies [k]themselves judge this.
32 “For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,
And from the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of (BP)poison,
Their clusters, bitter.
33 “Their wine is the venom of [l]serpents,
And the [m]deadly poison of cobras.

34 (BQ)Is it not laid up in store with Me,
Sealed up in My treasuries?
35 (BR)Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,
(BS)In due time their foot will slip;
(BT)For the day of their calamity is near,
And the impending things are hastening upon them.’
36 (BU)For the Lord will vindicate His people,
(BV)And will have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their [n]strength is gone,
And there is none remaining, bond or free.
37 “And He will say, ‘(BW)Where are their gods,
The rock in which they sought refuge?
38 (BX)Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
(BY)Let them rise up and help you,
Let them be your hiding place!
39 (BZ)See now that I, I am He,
(CA)And there is no god besides Me;
(CB)It is I who put to death and give life.
(CC)I have wounded and it is I who heal,
(CD)And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
40 ‘Indeed, (CE)I lift up My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,
41 (CF)If I sharpen My [o]flashing sword,
And My hand takes hold on justice,
(CG)I will render vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.
42 (CH)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
(CI)And My sword will devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the long-haired [p]leaders of the enemy.’
43 (CJ)Rejoice, O nations, with His people;
(CK)For He will avenge the blood of His servants,
(CL)And will render vengeance on His adversaries,
(CM)And will atone for His land and His people.”

44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with [q](CN)Joshua the son of Nun. 45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “(CO)Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command (CP)your sons to observe [r]carefully, even all the words of this law. 47 For it is not an idle word for you; indeed (CQ)it is your life. And (CR)by this word you will prolong your days in the land, [s]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [t]possess.”

48 (CS)The Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying, 49 (CT)Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab [u]opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession. 50 Then die on the mountain where you ascend, and be (CU)gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 (CV)because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the (CW)wilderness of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52 (CX)For you shall see the land at a distance, but (CY)you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel.”

The Blessing of Moses

33 Now this is the blessing with which Moses (CZ)the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death. He said,

(DA)The Lord came from Sinai,
(DB)And [v]dawned on them from Seir;
(DC)He shone forth from Mount Paran,
And He came from (DD)the [w]midst of ten thousand holy ones;
(DE)At His right hand there was [x]flashing lightning for them.
(DF)Indeed, He loves [y]the people;
(DG)All [z]Your holy ones are in Your hand,
(DH)And they [aa]followed in Your steps;
Everyone receives of Your words.
(DI)Moses charged us with a law,
(DJ)A possession for the assembly of Jacob.
(DK)And He was king in Jeshurun,
When the heads of the people were gathered,
The tribes of Israel together.

(DL)May Reuben live and not die,
Nor his men be few.”

(DM)And this regarding Judah; so he said,

“Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah,
And bring him to his people.
With his hands he contended for [ab]them,
And may You be a help against his adversaries.”

Of Levi he said,

Let Your (DN)Thummim and Your Urim belong to [ac]Your (DO)godly man,
(DP)Whom You proved at Massah,
With whom You contended at the waters of Meribah;
(DQ)Who said of his father and his mother,
‘I did not consider them’;
And he did not acknowledge his brothers,
Nor did he regard his own sons,
For (DR)they observed Your word,
And kept Your covenant.
10 (DS)They shall teach Your ordinances to Jacob,
And Your law to Israel.
(DT)They shall put incense [ad]before You,
And (DU)whole burnt offerings on Your altar.
11 “O Lord, bless his substance,
And accept the work of his hands;
Shatter the loins of those who rise up against him,
And those who hate him, so that they will not rise again.”

12 Of Benjamin he said,

(DV)May the beloved of the Lord dwell in security by Him,
(DW)Who shields him all the day,
(DX)And he dwells between His shoulders.”

13 Of Joseph he said,

(DY)Blessed of the Lord be his land,
With the choice things of heaven, with the dew,
And from the deep lying beneath,
14 And with the choice yield of the sun,
And with the choice produce of the months.
15 “And with the [ae]best things of (DZ)the ancient mountains,
And with the choice things of the everlasting hills,
16 And with the choice things of the earth and its fullness,
And the favor (EA)of Him who dwelt in the bush.
Let it come to the head of Joseph,
And to the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
17 “As the firstborn of his ox, majesty is his,
And his horns are the horns of (EB)the wild ox;
With them he will (EC)push the peoples,
All [af]at once, to the ends of the earth.
And those are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
And those are the thousands of Manasseh.”

18 (ED)Of Zebulun he said,

“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going forth,
And, Issachar, in your tents.
19 (EE)They will call peoples to the mountain;
There they will offer (EF)righteous sacrifices;
For they will [ag]draw out (EG)the abundance of the seas,
And the hidden treasures of the sand.”

20 (EH)Of Gad he said,

“Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad;
He lies down (EI)as a [ah]lion,
And tears the arm, also the crown of the head.
21 (EJ)Then he [ai]provided the first part for himself,
(EK)For there the ruler’s portion was [aj]reserved;
(EL)And he came with the leaders of the people;
(EM)He executed the justice of the Lord,
And His ordinances with Israel.”

22 (EN)Of Dan he said,

“Dan is (EO)a lion’s whelp,
That leaps forth from Bashan.”

23 Of Naphtali he said,

(EP)O Naphtali, satisfied with favor,
And full of the blessing of the Lord,
Take possession of the sea and the south.”

24 (EQ)Of Asher he said,

“More blessed than sons is Asher;
May he be favored by his brothers,
(ER)And may he dip his foot in oil.
25 (ES)Your locks will be iron and bronze,
(ET)And according to your days, so will your leisurely walk be.

26 (EU)There is none like the God of [ak]Jeshurun,
(EV)Who rides the heavens [al]to your help,
And through the skies in His majesty.
27 (EW)The eternal God is a [am]dwelling place,
(EX)And underneath are the everlasting arms;
(EY)And He drove out the enemy from before you,
(EZ)And said, ‘Destroy!’
28 (FA)So Israel dwells in security,
(FB)The fountain of Jacob secluded,
(FC)In a land of grain and new wine;
(FD)His heavens also drop down dew.
29 (FE)Blessed are you, O Israel;
(FF)Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord,
(FG)Who is the shield of your help
(FH)And the sword of your majesty!
(FI)So your enemies will cringe before you,
(FJ)And you will tread upon their high places.”

The Death of Moses

34 (FK)Now Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord (FL)showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the [an](FM)western sea, and the [ao]Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho, (FN)the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land which (FO)I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your [ap]descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” So Moses (FP)the servant of the Lord (FQ)died there in the land of Moab, according to the [aq]word of the Lord. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, (FR)opposite Beth-peor; but (FS)no man knows his burial place to this day. Although Moses was (FT)one hundred and twenty years old when he died, (FU)his eye was not dim, nor his vigor abated. So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.

Now Joshua the son of Nun was (FV)filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 Since that time (FW)no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom (FX)the Lord knew face to face, 11 for all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, 12 and for all the mighty [ar]power and for all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

Prayer for Help in Trouble.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

13 How long, O Lord? Will You (A)forget me forever?
How long (B)will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I (C)take counsel in my soul,
Having (D)sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

(E)Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
(F)Enlighten my eyes, or I will (G)sleep the sleep of death,
And my enemy will (H)say, “I have overcome him,”
And (I)my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken.

But I have (J)trusted in Your lovingkindness;
My heart shall (K)rejoice in Your salvation.
I will (L)sing to the Lord,
Because He has (M)dealt bountifully with me.

Call to Repent

13 Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood (A)Pilate had [a]mixed with their sacrifices. And Jesus said to them, (B)Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? I tell you, no, but unless you [b]repent, you will all likewise perish. Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in (C)Siloam fell and killed them were worse [c](D)culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

And He began telling this parable: “A man had (E)a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree [d]without finding any. (F)Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ And he answered and said to him, ‘Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’”

Healing on the Sabbath

10 And He was (G)teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had (H)a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” 13 And He (I)laid His hands on her; and immediately she was made erect again and began (J)glorifying God. 14 But (K)the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus (L)had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “(M)There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But (N)the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, (O)does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him? 16 And this woman, (P)a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom (Q)Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17 As He said this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and (R)the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.

Parables of Mustard Seed and Leaven

18 So (S)He was saying, (T)What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and (U)the birds of the [e]air nested in its branches.”

20 And again He said, (V)To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 (W)It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in (X)three [f]pecks of flour until it was all leavened.”

Teaching in the Villages

22 And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and (Y)proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, 24 (Z)Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and (AA)shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘(AB)Lord, open up to us!’ then He will answer and say to you, ‘(AC)I do not know where you are from.’ 26 Then you will (AD)begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’; 27 and He will say, ‘I tell you, (AE)I do not know where you are from; (AF)depart from Me, all you evildoers.’ 28 (AG)In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out. 29 And they (AH)will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, (AI)some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.”

31 Just at that time some Pharisees approached, saying to Him, “Go away, leave here, for (AJ)Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I [g](AK)reach My goal.’ 33 Nevertheless (AL)I must journey on today and tomorrow and the next day; for it cannot be that a (AM)prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem. 34 (AN)O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (AO)just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! 35 Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘(AP)Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
