Deuteronomy 27

The Altar on Mount Ebal
27 Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today. 2 And on the day (A)you cross over the Jordan to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and plaster them with plaster. 3 (B)And you shall write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over to enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you, (C)a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you. 4 And when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, concerning which I command you today, (D)on Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster. 5 And there you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, an altar of stones. (E)You shall wield no iron tool on them; 6 you shall build an altar to the Lord your God of uncut[a] stones. And you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God, 7 and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and (F)shall eat there, and you (G)shall rejoice before the Lord your God. 8 And (H)you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”
Curses from Mount Ebal
9 Then Moses and the Levitical priests said to all Israel, “Keep silence and hear, O Israel: (I)this day you have become the people of the Lord your God. 10 You shall therefore obey the voice of the Lord your God, keeping his commandments and his statutes, which I command you today.”
11 That day Moses charged the people, saying, 12 “When you have crossed over the Jordan, (J)these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13 And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14 And (K)the Levites shall declare to all the men of Israel in a loud voice:
15 (L)“‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the Lord, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ (M)And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’
16 (N)“‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
17 (O)“‘Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor's landmark.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
18 (P)“‘Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
19 (Q)“‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
20 (R)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his father's wife, because he has (S)uncovered his father's nakedness.’[b] And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
21 (T)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with any kind of animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
22 (U)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
23 (V)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
24 (W)“‘Cursed be anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
25 (X)“‘Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
26 (Y)“‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

27 (B)*Mosè e gli *anziani d'*Israele diedero quest'ordine al popolo: «Osservate tutti i comandamenti che oggi vi do.
2 Quando avrete attraversato il *Giordano per entrare nel paese che il Signore, il tuo Dio, vi dà, innalzerai delle grandi pietre e le imbiancherai con la calce. 3 Poi vi scriverai sopra tutte le parole di questa legge, quando avrai attraversato il Giordano per entrare nel paese che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti dà: paese dove scorre il latte e il miele, come il Signore, il Dio dei tuoi padri, ti ha detto. 4 Quando dunque avrete attraversato il Giordano, innalzerete sul monte *Ebal queste pietre, come oggi vi comando, e le imbiancherete con la calce. 5 Là costruirai pure un altare al Signore tuo Dio: un altare di pietre, sulle quali non passerai ferro. 6 Costruirai l'altare del Signore, tuo Dio, di pietre grezze e su di esso offrirai olocausti al Signore, tuo Dio. 7 Offrirai sacrifici di riconoscenza e là mangerai e ti rallegrerai davanti al Signore tuo Dio. 8 Scriverai su quelle pietre tutte le parole di questa legge, in modo che siano molto chiare».
9 Mosè e i *sacerdoti *levitici parlarono a tutto Israele, dicendo: «Fa' silenzio e ascolta, Israele! Oggi sei diventato il popolo del Signore tuo Dio. 10 Ubbidirai quindi alla voce del Signore tuo Dio, e metterai in pratica i suoi comandamenti e le sue leggi che oggi ti do».
Benedizioni sul monte Gherizim e maledizioni sul monte Ebal
11 (C)In quello stesso giorno Mosè diede pure quest'ordine al popolo: 12 Quando avrete attraversato il Giordano, ecco quelli che staranno sul monte *Gherizim per benedire il popolo: *Simeone, *Levi, *Giuda, *Issacar, *Giuseppe e *Beniamino; 13 ed ecco quelli che staranno sul monte Ebal, per pronunziare la maledizione: *Ruben, *Gad, *Ascer, *Zabulon, *Dan e *Neftali. 14 I Leviti parleranno e diranno ad alta voce a tutti gli uomini d'Israele:
15 «Maledetto l'uomo che fa un'immagine scolpita o di metallo fuso, cosa abominevole per il Signore, opera di un artigiano, e la pone in luogo occulto!» –E tutto il popolo risponderà e dirà: «Amen».
16 «Maledetto chi disprezza suo padre o sua madre!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
17 «Maledetto chi sposta le pietre di confine del suo prossimo!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
18 «Maledetto chi fa smarrire al cieco il suo cammino!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
19 «Maledetto chi calpesta il diritto dello straniero, dell'orfano e della vedova!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
20 «Maledetto chi si corica con la moglie di suo padre, perché ha sollevato il lembo della coperta di suo padre!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
21 «Maledetto chi si accoppia con qualsiasi bestia!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
22 «Maledetto chi si corica con la propria sorella, figlia di suo padre o figlia di sua madre!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
23 «Maledetto chi si corica con sua suocera!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
24 «Maledetto chi uccide il suo prossimo di nascosto!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
25 «Maledetto chi prende un regalo per condannare a morte un innocente!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
26 «Maledetto chi non si attiene alle parole di questa legge, per metterle in pratica[a]!» –E tutto il popolo dirà: «Amen».
