Deuteronomy 10-12

The Tablets Rewritten
10 “At that time the Lord said to me, ‘(A)Cut out for yourself two tablets of stone like the former ones, and come up to Me on the mountain, and (B)make an ark of wood for yourself. 2 (C)I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered, and (D)you shall put them in the ark.’ 3 So (E)I made an ark of acacia wood and (F)cut out two tablets of stone like the former ones, and went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. 4 He wrote on the tablets, like the former writing, (G)the Ten [a]Commandments (H)which the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire (I)on the day of the assembly; and the Lord gave them to me. 5 Then I turned and (J)came down from the mountain and (K)put the tablets in the ark which I had made; (L)and there they are, as the Lord commanded me.”
6 (Now the sons of Israel set out from [b]Beeroth (M)Bene-jaakan to Moserah. (N)There Aaron died and there he was buried and Eleazar his son ministered as priest in his place. 7 (O)From there they set out to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of brooks of water. 8 (P)At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord (Q)to serve Him and to bless in His name until this day. 9 (R)Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the Lord is his inheritance, just as the Lord your God spoke to him.)
10 “(S)I, moreover, stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights like the first time, and the Lord listened to me that time also; the Lord was not willing to destroy you. 11 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Arise, proceed on your journey ahead of the people, that they may go in and possess the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.’
12 “(T)Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require from you, but to [c]fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and (U)love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with (V)all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the Lord’s commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good? 14 Behold, (W)to the Lord your God belong heaven and the [d]highest heavens, (X)the earth and all that is in it. 15 (Y)Yet on your fathers did the Lord set His affection to love them, and He chose their [e]descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as it is this day. 16 (Z)So circumcise [f]your heart, and (AA)stiffen your neck no longer. 17 (AB)For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the (AC)Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God (AD)who does not show partiality nor (AE)take a bribe. 18 He executes justice for (AF)the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. 19 (AG)So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 20 You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him and (AH)cling to Him, and (AI)you shall swear by His name. 21 He is (AJ)your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen. 22 (AK)Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, (AL)and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.
Rewards of Obedience
11 “You shall therefore (AM)love the Lord your God, and always (AN)keep His charge, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments. 2 Know this day (AO)that I am not speaking with your sons who have not known and who have not seen the [g]discipline of the Lord your God—His greatness, His mighty hand and His outstretched arm, 3 and (AP)His signs and His works which He did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land; 4 and what He did to Egypt’s army, to its horses and its chariots, (AQ)when He made the water of the [h]Red Sea to [i]engulf them while they were pursuing you, and the Lord [j]completely destroyed them; 5 and what He did to you in the wilderness until you came to this place; 6 and (AR)what He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and (AS)every living thing that [k]followed them, among all Israel— 7 but your own eyes have seen all the great work of the Lord which He did.
8 “You shall therefore keep every commandment which I am commanding you today, (AT)so that you may be strong and go in and possess the land into which you are about to cross to possess it; 9 (AU)so that you may prolong your days on the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give to them and to their [l]descendants, (AV)a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 For the land, into which you are entering to possess it, is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, where you used to sow your seed and water it with your [m]foot like a vegetable garden. 11 But (AW)the land into which you are about to cross to possess it, a land of hills and valleys, drinks water from the rain of heaven, 12 a land for which the Lord your God cares; (AX)the eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the [n]beginning even to the end of the year.
13 “It shall come about, (AY)if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today, (AZ)to love the Lord your God and to serve Him (BA)with all your heart and all your soul, 14 that [o](BB)He will give the rain for your land in its season, the [p](BC)early and [q]late rain, that you may gather in your grain and your new wine and your oil. 15 [r](BD)He will give grass in your fields for your cattle, and (BE)you will eat and be satisfied. 16 [s](BF)Beware that your hearts are not deceived, and that you do not turn away and serve other gods and worship them. 17 Or (BG)the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and He will (BH)shut up the heavens (BI)so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its fruit; and (BJ)you will perish quickly from the good land which the Lord is giving you.
18 “(BK)You shall therefore [t]impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as [u]frontals [v]on your forehead. 19 (BL)You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up. 20 (BM)You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 so that (BN)your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as [w](BO)long as the heavens remain above the earth. 22 For if you are (BP)careful to keep all this commandment which I am commanding you to do, (BQ)to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and (BR)hold fast to Him, 23 then the Lord will (BS)drive out all these nations from before you, and you will (BT)dispossess nations greater and mightier than you. 24 (BU)Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours; (BV)your border will be from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the river, the river Euphrates, as far as [x]the western sea. 25 (BW)No man will be able to stand before you; the Lord your God will lay the dread of you and the fear of you on all the land on which you set foot, as He has spoken to you.
26 “(BX)See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the (BY)blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; 28 and the (BZ)curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, [y]by following other gods which you have not known.
29 “It shall come about, when the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, (CA)that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. 30 Are they not across the Jordan, west of the way toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite (CB)Gilgal, beside (CC)the [z]oaks of Moreh? 31 For you are about to cross the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and (CD)you shall possess it and live in it, 32 and you shall be careful to do all the statutes and the judgments which I am setting before you today.
Laws of the Sanctuary
12 “These are the statutes and the judgments which you shall carefully observe in the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess [aa](CE)as long as you live on the [ab]earth. 2 You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess serve their gods, on the (CF)high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. 3 (CG)You shall tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and burn their [ac]Asherim with fire, and you shall cut down the engraved images of their gods and (CH)obliterate their name from that place. 4 You shall not act like this toward the Lord your God. 5 (CI)But you shall seek the Lord at the place which the Lord your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and there you shall come. 6 There you shall bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, (CJ)your tithes, the [ad]contribution of your hand, your votive offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. 7 There also you and your households shall eat before the Lord your God, and (CK)rejoice in all [ae]your undertakings in which the Lord your God has blessed you.
8 “You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes; 9 for you have not as yet come to (CL)the resting place and the (CM)inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you. 10 When you cross the Jordan and live in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, and (CN)He gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security, 11 (CO)then it shall come about that the place in which the Lord your God will choose for His name to dwell, there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the [af]contribution of your hand, and all your choice votive offerings which you will vow to the Lord. 12 And you shall (CP)rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the (CQ)Levite who is within your gates, since (CR)he has no portion or inheritance with you.
13 “(CS)Be careful that you do not offer your burnt offerings in every cultic place you see, 14 but in the place which the Lord chooses in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I command you.
15 “(CT)However, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your gates, [ag]whatever you desire, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you; the unclean and the clean may eat of it, as of (CU)the gazelle and the deer. 16 (CV)Only you shall not eat the blood; (CW)you are to pour it out on the ground like water. 17 (CX)You are not allowed to eat within your gates the tithe of your grain or new wine or oil, or the firstborn of your herd or flock, or any of your votive offerings which you vow, or your freewill offerings, or the [ah]contribution of your hand. 18 But (CY)you shall eat them before the Lord your God in (CZ)the place which the Lord your God will choose, you and your son and daughter, and your male and female servants, and the (DA)Levite who is within your gates; and you shall (DB)rejoice before the Lord your God in all [ai]your undertakings. 19 (DC)Be careful that you do not forsake the Levite [aj]as long as you live in your land.
20 “When the Lord your God extends your border (DD)as He has promised you, and you say, ‘I will eat meat,’ because [ak]you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat, [al]whatever you desire. 21 If the place which the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, then you may slaughter of your herd and flock which the Lord has given you, as I have commanded you; and you may eat within your gates [am]whatever you desire. 22 Just as a gazelle or a deer is eaten, so you will eat it; the unclean and the clean alike may eat of it. 23 Only be sure (DE)not to eat the blood, for the blood is the [an]life, and you shall not eat the [ao]life with the flesh. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 25 You shall not eat it, so that (DF)it may be well with you and your sons after you, for (DG)you will be doing what is right in the sight of the Lord. 26 (DH)Only your holy things which you may have and your votive offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the Lord chooses. 27 And (DI)you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, and (DJ)you shall eat the flesh.
28 “Be careful to listen to all these words which I command you, so that (DK)it may be well with you and your sons after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.
29 “When (DL)the Lord your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, 30 beware that you are not ensnared [ap]to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’ 31 (DM)You shall not behave thus toward the Lord your God, for every abominable act which the Lord hates they have done for their gods; for (DN)they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.
32 “[aq](DO)Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; (DP)you shall not add to nor take away from it.

Instruction about Prayer
11 It happened that while [a]Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” 2 And He said to them, “(A)When you pray, say:
‘[b]Father, hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
3 ‘Give us (B)each day our [c]daily bread.
4 ‘And forgive us our sins,
For we ourselves also forgive everyone who (C)is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.’”
5 Then He said to them, “[d]Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children [e]and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet (D)because of his [f]persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
9 “So I say to you, [g](E)ask, and it will be given to you; [h]seek, and you will find; [i]knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11 Now [j]suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a [k]fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12 Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 13 (F)If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your [l]heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
Pharisees’ Blasphemy
14 (G)And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons (H)by (I)Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” 16 Others, [m]to test Him, (J)were demanding of Him a [n]sign from heaven. 17 (K)But He knew their thoughts and said to them, “[o]Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against [p]itself falls. 18 If (L)Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by (M)Beelzebul. 19 And if I by (N)Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? So they will be your judges. 20 But if I cast out demons by the (O)finger of God, then (P)the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When [q]a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are [r]undisturbed. 22 But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. 23 (Q)He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters.
24 “(R)When the unclean spirit goes out of [s]a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
27 While [t]Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “(S)Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.” 28 But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are (T)those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
The Sign of Jonah
29 As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “(U)This generation is a wicked generation; it (V)seeks for a [u]sign, and yet no [v]sign will be given to it but the [w]sign of Jonah. 30 For just as (W)Jonah became a [x]sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The (X)Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because (Y)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
33 “(Z)No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 (AA)The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is [y]clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is [z]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness. 36 If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays.”
Woes upon the Pharisees
37 Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first [aa](AB)ceremonially washed before the [ab]meal. 39 But (AC)the Lord said to him, “Now (AD)you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but [ac]inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. 40 (AE)You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (AF)give that which is within as charity, and [ad]then all things are (AG)clean for you.
42 “(AH)But woe to you Pharisees! For you (AI)pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you (AJ)love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places. 44 (AK)Woe to you! For you are like [ae]concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.”
45 One of the [af](AL)lawyers *said to Him in reply, “Teacher, when You say this, You insult us too.” 46 But He said, “Woe to you (AM)lawyers as well! For (AN)you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, [ag]while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (AO)Woe to you! For you build the [ah]tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. 48 So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 For this reason also (AP)the wisdom of God said, ‘(AQ)I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will [ai]persecute, 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed (AR)since the foundation of the world, may be [aj]charged against this generation, 51 from (AS)the blood of Abel to (AT)the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be [ak]charged against this generation.’ 52 Woe to you [al](AU)lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; (AV)you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”
53 When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, 54 (AW)plotting against Him (AX)to catch [am]Him in something He might say.
