The Essence of the Law

12 “So now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? Only to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,(A) 13 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and his decrees that I am commanding you today, for your own well-being. 14 Although heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth with all that is in it,(B) 15 yet the Lord set his heart in love on your ancestors alone and chose you, their descendants after them, out of all the peoples, as it is today.(C)

Fear the Lord

12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you(A) but to fear(B) the Lord your God, to walk(C) in obedience to him, to love him,(D) to serve the Lord(E) your God with all your heart(F) and with all your soul,(G) 13 and to observe the Lord’s commands(H) and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?(I)

14 To the Lord your God belong the heavens,(J) even the highest heavens,(K) the earth and everything in it.(L) 15 Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved(M) them, and he chose you,(N) their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today.(O)

17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe,(A) 18 who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves the strangers, providing them food and clothing.(B) 19 You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.(C) 20 You shall fear the Lord your God; him you shall serve; to him you shall hold fast; and by his name you shall swear.(D) 21 He is your praise; he is your God who has done for you these great and awesome things that your own eyes have seen.(E) 22 Your ancestors went down to Egypt seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in heaven.(F)

Rewards for Obedience

11 “You shall love the Lord your God, therefore, and keep his charge, his decrees, his ordinances, and his commandments always.(G)

17 For the Lord your God is God of gods(A) and Lord of lords,(B) the great God, mighty and awesome,(C) who shows no partiality(D) and accepts no bribes.(E) 18 He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow,(F) and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.(G) 19 And you are to love(H) those who are foreigners,(I) for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.(J) 20 Fear the Lord your God and serve him.(K) Hold fast(L) to him and take your oaths in his name.(M) 21 He is the one you praise;(N) he is your God, who performed for you those great(O) and awesome wonders(P) you saw with your own eyes. 22 Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all,(Q) and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.(R)

Love and Obey the Lord

11 Love(S) the Lord your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always.(T)
