⁴⁶ on this side of the Jordan, ^(A)in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel ^(B)defeated^[a] after they came out of Egypt.

²⁹ “So we stayed in ^(A)the valley opposite Beth Peor.

⁴⁷ And they took possession of his land and the land ^(A)of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, who were on this side of the Jordan, toward the ^[a]rising of the sun,

⁸ “And at that time we took the ^(A)land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were on this side of the Jordan, from the River Arnon to Mount ^(B)Hermon

^30 (A)“But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for ^(B)the Lord your God ^(C)hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as it is this day.

³¹ “And the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to ^(D)give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to possess it, that you may inherit his land.’ ^32 (E)Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz. ³³ And ^(F)the Lord our God delivered him ^[a]over to us; so ^(G)we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. ³⁴ We took all his cities at that time, and we ^(H)utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining. ³⁵ We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we took. ^36 (I)From Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and from ^(J)the city that is in the ravine, as far as Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us; ^(K)the Lord our God delivered all to us.

^4 (A)after he had killed Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt at Ashtaroth ^(B)in^[a] Edrei.

⁵ On this side of the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying,

¹⁹ For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, ^(A)because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Jordan.”

King Sihon Defeated^(A)

²¹ Then ^(B)Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, ^22 (C)“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into fields or vineyards; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.” ^23 (D)But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and ^[a]went out against Israel in the wilderness, ^(E)and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. ²⁴ Then ^(F)Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified. ²⁵ So Israel took all these cities, and Israel ^(G)dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all its villages. ²⁶ For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon. ²⁷ Therefore those who speak in ^[b]proverbs say:

³¹ Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. ³² Then Moses sent to ^[c]spy out ^(Q)Jazer; and they took its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.
