²⁶ But because of you the Lord was angry^(A) with me and would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the Lord said. “Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.

³⁷ Because of you the Lord became angry^(A) with me also and said, “You shall not enter^(B) it, either.

² “I am now a hundred and twenty years old^(A) and I am no longer able to lead you.^(B) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’^(C)

⁸ Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.^(A)

³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(A) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(B)

² King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my fellow Israelites, my people. I had it in my heart^(A) to build a house as a place of rest^(B) for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool^(C) of our God, and I made plans to build it.^{(D) 3} But God said to me,^(E) ‘You are not to build a house for my Name,^(F) because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’^(G)

⁴ “Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me^(H) from my whole family^(I) to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah^(J) as leader, and from the tribe of Judah he chose my family, and from my father’s sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel.^(K)

⁷ David said to Solomon: “My son, I had it in my heart^(A) to build^(B) a house for the Name^(C) of the Lord my God. ⁸ But this word of the Lord came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and have fought many wars.^(D) You are not to build a house for my Name,^(E) because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. ⁹ But you will have a son who will be a man of peace^(F) and rest,^(G) and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon,^[a](H) and I will grant Israel peace and quiet^(I) during his reign.
