Laws Concerning Divorce

24 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and (A)he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, and if she goes and becomes another man's wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, then (B)her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

Miscellaneous Laws

(C)“When a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any other public duty. He shall be free at home one year (D)to be happy with his wife[a] whom he has taken.

“No one shall take a mill or an upper millstone in pledge, for that would be taking a life in pledge.

(E)“If a man is found stealing one of his brothers of the people of Israel, and if he (F)treats him as a slave or sells him, then that thief shall die. (G)So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

“Take care, in (H)a case of leprous[b] disease, to be very careful to do according to all that the Levitical priests shall direct you. As I commanded them, so you shall be careful to do. Remember what the Lord your God did to (I)Miriam (J)on the way as you came out of Egypt.

10 “When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not go into his house to collect his pledge. 11 You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you. 12 And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep in his pledge. 13 (K)You shall restore to him the pledge as the sun sets, that he may sleep in his cloak and (L)bless you. And (M)it shall be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.

14 “You shall not (N)oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns. 15 (O)You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets (for he is poor and counts on it), (P)lest he cry against you to the Lord, and you be guilty of sin.

16 (Q)“Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin.

17 (R)“You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, (S)or take a widow's garment in pledge, 18 but (T)you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this.

19 (U)“When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, (V)that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over them again. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not strip it afterward. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. 22 (W)You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this.

25 “If there is a (X)dispute between men and they come into court and the judges decide between them, (Y)acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty, then if the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall cause him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with a number of stripes in proportion to his offense. (Z)Forty stripes may be given him, but not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight.

(AA)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.

Laws Concerning Levirate Marriage

(AB)“If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her (AC)husband's brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that (AD)his name may not be blotted out of Israel. And if the man does not wish to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall (AE)go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband's brother refuses to perpetuate his brother's name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.’ Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, (AF)‘I do not wish to take her,’ then his brother's wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and (AG)pull his sandal off his foot and (AH)spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not (AI)build up his brother's house.’ 10 And the name of his house[c] shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal pulled off.’

Miscellaneous Laws

11 “When men fight with one another and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, 12 then you shall cut off her hand. (AJ)Your eye shall have no pity.

13 “You (AK)shall not have in your bag two kinds of weights, a large and a small. 14 You shall not have in your house two kinds of measures, a large and a small. 15 A full and fair[d] weight you shall have, a full and fair measure you shall have, (AL)that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For (AM)all who do such things, all who act dishonestly, (AN)are an abomination to the Lord your God.

17 (AO)“Remember what Amalek did to you (AP)on the way as you came out of Egypt, 18 how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and (AQ)cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God. 19 Therefore (AR)when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall (AS)blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.

Offerings of Firstfruits and Tithes

26 “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, (AT)you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall (AU)go to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land (AV)that the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’ Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God.

“And you shall make response before the Lord your God, ‘A (AW)wandering Aramean was my father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, (AX)few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. And (AY)the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. Then (AZ)we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. And (BA)the Lord brought us out of Egypt (BB)with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror,[e] with signs and wonders. And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, (BC)a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me.’ And you shall set it down before the Lord your God and worship before the Lord your God. 11 And (BD)you shall rejoice in all the good that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you.

12 “When you have finished paying all (BE)the tithe of your produce in the third year, which is (BF)the year of tithing, giving it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your towns and be filled, 13 then you shall say before the Lord your God, ‘I have removed the sacred portion out of my house, and moreover, I have given it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all your commandment that you have commanded me. I have not transgressed any of your commandments, (BG)nor have I forgotten them. 14 (BH)I have not eaten of the tithe while I was mourning, or removed any of it while I was unclean, or offered any of it (BI)to the dead. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord my God. I have done according to all that you have commanded me. 15 (BJ)Look down from your holy habitation, from heaven, and bless your people Israel and the ground that you have given us, as you swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.’

16 “This day the Lord your God commands you to do these statutes and rules. You shall therefore be careful to do them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 (BK)You have declared today that the Lord is your God, and that you will walk in his ways, and keep his statutes and his commandments and his rules, and will obey his voice. 18 And the Lord has declared today that you are (BL)a people for his treasured possession, as he has promised you, and that you are to keep all his commandments, 19 and that he will set you in praise and in fame and in honor (BM)high above all nations (BN)that he has made, and that you shall be (BO)a people holy to the Lord your God, as he promised.”

The Altar on Mount Ebal

27 Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today. And on the day (BP)you cross over the Jordan to the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and plaster them with plaster. (BQ)And you shall write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over to enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you, (BR)a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you. And when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, concerning which I command you today, (BS)on Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster. And there you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, an altar of stones. (BT)You shall wield no iron tool on them; you shall build an altar to the Lord your God of uncut[f] stones. And you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God, and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and (BU)shall eat there, and you (BV)shall rejoice before the Lord your God. And (BW)you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”

Curses from Mount Ebal

Then Moses and the Levitical priests said to all Israel, “Keep silence and hear, O Israel: (BX)this day you have become the people of the Lord your God. 10 You shall therefore obey the voice of the Lord your God, keeping his commandments and his statutes, which I command you today.”

11 That day Moses charged the people, saying, 12 “When you have crossed over the Jordan, (BY)these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13 And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14 And (BZ)the Levites shall declare to all the men of Israel in a loud voice:

15 (CA)“‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the Lord, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ (CB)And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.’

16 (CC)“‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

17 (CD)“‘Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor's landmark.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

18 (CE)“‘Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

19 (CF)“‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

20 (CG)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his father's wife, because he has (CH)uncovered his father's nakedness.’[g] And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

21 (CI)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with any kind of animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

22 (CJ)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

23 (CK)“‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

24 (CL)“‘Cursed be anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

25 (CM)“‘Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

26 (CN)“‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

Who Is like the Lord Our God?

113 (A)Praise the Lord!
(B)Praise, O (C)servants of the Lord,
    praise the name of the Lord!

(D)Blessed be the name of the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore!
(E)From the rising of the sun to its setting,
    (F)the name of the Lord is (G)to be praised!

The Lord is (H)high above all nations,
    and his (I)glory above the heavens!
(J)Who is like the Lord our God,
    who is seated on high,
who (K)looks far down
    on the heavens and the earth?
He (L)raises the poor from the dust
    and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them (M)sit with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
He (N)gives the barren woman a home,
    making her the joyous mother of children.
(O)Praise the Lord!

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

114 When (P)Israel went out from Egypt,
    the house of Jacob from (Q)a people of strange language,
Judah became his (R)sanctuary,
    Israel his dominion.

(S)The sea looked and fled;
    (T)Jordan turned back.
(U)The mountains skipped like rams,
    the hills like lambs.

What (V)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
    O Jordan, that you turn back?
O mountains, that you skip like rams?
    O hills, like lambs?

(W)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
    at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turns (X)the rock into (Y)a pool of water,
    (Z)the flint into a spring of water.

To Your Name Give Glory

115 (AA)Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
    (AB)for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Why should the nations say,
    (AC)“Where is their God?”
(AD)Our God is in the heavens;
    (AE)he does all that he pleases.

(AF)Their idols are silver and gold,
    (AG)the work of human hands.
They have mouths, (AH)but do not speak;
    eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
    noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
    feet, but do not walk;
    and they do not make a sound in their throat.
(AI)Those who make them become like them;
    so do all who trust in them.

O (AJ)Israel,[a] (AK)trust in the Lord!
    He is their (AL)help and their shield.
10 O (AM)house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and (AN)their shield.
11 You (AO)who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and their shield.

12 The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
    he will bless (AP)the house of Israel;
    he will bless (AQ)the house of Aaron;
13 he will (AR)bless those who fear the Lord,
    (AS)both the small and the great.

14 May the Lord (AT)give you increase,
    you and your children!
15 May (AU)you be blessed by the Lord,
    (AV)who made heaven and earth!

16 The heavens are the Lord's heavens,
    but the earth he has given to the children of man.
17 (AW)The dead do not praise the Lord,
    nor do any who go down into (AX)silence.
18 But (AY)we will bless the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore.
(AZ)Praise the Lord!

I Love the Lord

116 I (BA)love the Lord, because he has (BB)heard
    my voice and my pleas for mercy.
Because he (BC)inclined his ear to me,
    therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
(BD)The snares of death encompassed me;
    the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
    I suffered distress and anguish.
Then (BE)I called on the name of the Lord:
    “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”

(BF)Gracious is the Lord, and (BG)righteous;
    our God is (BH)merciful.
The Lord preserves (BI)the simple;
    when (BJ)I was brought low, he saved me.
Return, O my soul, to your (BK)rest;
    for the Lord has (BL)dealt bountifully with you.

For (BM)you have delivered my soul from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling;
I will walk before the Lord
    (BN)in the land of the living.

10 (BO)I believed, (BP)even when[b] I spoke:
    “I am greatly afflicted”;
11 (BQ)I said in my alarm,
    (BR)“All mankind are liars.”

12 What shall I (BS)render to the Lord
    for all his benefits to me?
13 I will lift up (BT)the cup of salvation
    and (BU)call on the name of the Lord,
14 I will (BV)pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people.

15 (BW)Precious in the sight of the Lord
    is the death of his (BX)saints.
16 O Lord, I am your (BY)servant;
    I am your servant, (BZ)the son of your maidservant.
    You have (CA)loosed my bonds.
17 I will (CB)offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
    and (CC)call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will (CD)pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people,
19 in (CE)the courts of the house of the Lord,
    in your midst, O Jerusalem.
(CF)Praise the Lord!

The Lord's Faithfulness Endures Forever

117 (CG)Praise the Lord, all nations!
    Extol him, all peoples!
For (CH)great is his steadfast love toward us,
    and (CI)the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
(CJ)Praise the Lord!

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever

118 (CK)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

(CL)Let Israel say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
(CM)Let the house of Aaron say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
(CN)Let those who fear the Lord say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”

(CO)Out of my distress I (CP)called on the Lord;
    the Lord answered me and set me (CQ)free.
(CR)The Lord is on my side; (CS)I will not fear.
    What can man do to me?
(CT)The Lord is on my side as my helper;
    I shall (CU)look in triumph on those who hate me.

(CV)It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    (CW)than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    (CX)than to trust in princes.

10 (CY)All nations surrounded me;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
12 (CZ)They surrounded me like bees;
    they went out like (DA)a fire among thorns;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
13 I was (DB)pushed hard,[c] so that I was falling,
    but the Lord helped me.

14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
    (DC)he has become my salvation.
15 Glad songs of salvation
    are in the tents of the righteous:
(DD)“The right hand of the Lord (DE)does valiantly,
16     the right hand of the Lord exalts,
    the right hand of the Lord (DF)does valiantly!”

17 (DG)I shall not die, but I shall live,
    and (DH)recount the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord has (DI)disciplined me severely,
    but he has not given me over to death.

19 (DJ)Open to me the gates of righteousness,
    that I may enter through them
    and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
    (DK)the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that (DL)you have answered me
    (DM)and have become my salvation.
22 (DN)The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.[d]
23 This is the Lord's doing;
    it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!
    O Lord, we pray, give us success!

26 (DO)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
    We (DP)bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God,
    and he has made (DQ)his light to shine upon us.
Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
    up to (DR)the horns of the altar!

28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
    you are my God; I will (DS)extol you.
29 (DT)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

The Passover with the Disciples

17 (A)Now on (B)the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, (C)‘The Teacher says, (D)My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 (E)When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[a] 21 And as they were eating, (F)he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, (G)“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes (H)as it is written of him, but (I)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (J)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, (K)Rabbi?” He said to him, (L)“You have said so.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

26 (M)Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and (N)after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; (O)this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he (P)had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for (Q)this is my (R)blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for (S)many (T)for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you (U)in my Father's kingdom.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 (V)And when they had sung a hymn, (W)they went out to (X)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will (Y)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, (Z)I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 (AA)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 (AB)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, (AC)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 (AD)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

The Passover with the Disciples

12 (A)And on (B)the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they (C)sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent (D)two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, (E)‘The Teacher says, Where is (F)my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you (G)a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 (H)And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, (I)Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, (J)one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is (K)one of the twelve, (L)one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes (M)as it is written of him, but (N)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (O)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Institution of the Lord's Supper

22 (P)And as they were eating, he took bread, and after (Q)blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; (R)this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had (S)given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, (T)“This is my (U)blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for (V)many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

26 (W)And when they had sung a hymn, (X)they went out to (Y)the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will (Z)strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, (AA)I will go before you to Galilee.” 29 (AB)Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” 30 And (AC)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before (AD)the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But (AE)he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.

The Plot to Kill Jesus

22 (A)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called (B)the Passover. And the chief priests and the scribes (C)were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

(D)Then (E)Satan entered into (F)Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and (G)officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to (H)betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

The Passover with the Disciples

(I)Then came (J)the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus[a] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, (K)‘The Teacher says to you, Where is (L)the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 And he will show you (M)a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” 13 And they went and found it (N)just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

14 (O)And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it[b] (P)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and (Q)when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 (R)For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine (S)until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 (T)And he took bread, and (U)when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, (V)“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, (W)“This cup that is poured out for you is (X)the new (Y)covenant in my blood.[c] 21 (Z)But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is (AA)with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes (AB)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

24 (AC)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 (AD)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles (AE)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 (AF)But not so with you. Rather, let (AG)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, (AH)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But (AI)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me (AJ)in my trials, 29 and (AK)I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 (AL)that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and (AM)sit on thrones judging (AN)the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (AO)Satan demanded to have you,[d] (AP)that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but (AQ)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, (AR)strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter[e] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both (AS)to prison and (AT)to death.” 34 (AU)Jesus[f] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, (AV)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that (AW)this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: (AX)‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For (AY)what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two (AZ)swords.” And he said to them, (BA)“It is enough.”
