24 If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him^(A) because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce,^(B) gives it to her and sends her from his house,

⁷ “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”^(A)

⁸ Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. ⁹ I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”^(B)

⁴ They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”^(A)

⁵ “It was because your hearts were hard^(B) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. ⁶ “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’^{[a](C) 7} ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,^{[b] 8} and the two will become one flesh.’^[c](D) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹ Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

¹⁰ When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. ¹¹ He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.^{(E) 12} And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”^(F)

⁸ I gave faithless Israel^(A) her certificate of divorce^(B) and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear;^(C) she also went out and committed adultery.

Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience

50 This is what the Lord says:

²⁹ he shall pay her father fifty shekels^[a] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

¹⁹ They shall fine him a hundred shekels^[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.

Marriage Violations

¹³ If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her^(A), dislikes her

¹¹ But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband.^(A) And a husband must not divorce his wife.

¹² To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord):^(B) If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.
