The Family of Seir(A)

38 (B)The sons of Seir were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. 39 And the sons of Lotan were Hori and [a]Homam; Lotan’s sister was Timna. 40 The sons of Shobal were [b]Alian, Manahath, Ebal, [c]Shephi, and Onam. The sons of Zibeon were Ajah and Anah. 41 The son of Anah was (C)Dishon. The sons of Dishon were [d]Hamran, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. 42 The sons of Ezer were Bilhan, Zaavan, and [e]Jaakan. The sons of Dishan were Uz and Aran.

The Kings of Edom(D)

43 Now these were the (E)kings who reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned over the children of Israel: Bela the son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. 44 And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. 45 When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 46 And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who [f]attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place. The name of his city was Avith. 47 When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. 48 (F)And when Samlah died, Saul of Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. 49 When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. 50 And when Baal-Hanan died, [g]Hadad reigned in his place; and the name of his city was [h]Pai. His wife’s name was Mehetabel the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab. 51 Hadad died also. And the chiefs of Edom were Chief Timnah, Chief [i]Aliah, Chief Jetheth, 52 Chief Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, 53 Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, 54 Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom.

32 (A)Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz. 33 And (B)the Lord our God delivered him [a]over to us; so (C)we defeated him, his sons, and all his people. 34 We took all his cities at that time, and we (D)utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining. 35 We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we took. 36 (E)From Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and from (F)the city that is in the ravine, as far as Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us; (G)the Lord our God delivered all to us. 37 Only you did not go near the land of the people of Ammon—anywhere along the River (H)Jabbok, or to the cities of the mountains, or (I)wherever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

King Og Defeated(J)

“Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan; and (K)Og king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle (L)at Edrei. And the Lord said to me, ‘Do not fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand; you shall do to him as you did to (M)Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.’

“So the Lord our God also delivered into our hands Og king of Bashan, with all his people, and we [b]attacked him until he had no survivors remaining. And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we did not take from them: sixty cities, (N)all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns. And we utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king (O)of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city. But all the livestock and the spoil of the cities we took as booty for ourselves.

“And at that time we took the (P)land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were on this side of the Jordan, from the River Arnon to Mount (Q)Hermon (the Sidonians call (R)Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), 10 (S)all the cities of the plain, all Gilead, and (T)all Bashan, as far as Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

11 (U)“For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of (V)the [c]giants. Indeed his bedstead was an iron bedstead. (Is it not in (W)Rabbah of the people of Ammon?) Nine cubits is its length and four cubits its width, according to the standard cubit.

King Sihon Defeated(A)

21 Then (B)Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 22 (C)“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into fields or vineyards; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.” 23 (D)But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and [a]went out against Israel in the wilderness, (E)and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 Then (F)Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified. 25 So Israel took all these cities, and Israel (G)dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all its villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore those who speak in [b]proverbs say:

“Come to Heshbon, let it be built;
Let the city of Sihon be repaired.

28 “For (H)fire went out from Heshbon,
A flame from the city of Sihon;
It consumed (I)Ar of Moab,
The lords of the (J)heights of the Arnon.
29 Woe to you, (K)Moab!
You have perished, O people of (L)Chemosh!
He has given his (M)sons as fugitives,
And his (N)daughters into captivity,
To Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 “But we have shot at them;
Heshbon has perished (O)as far as Dibon.
Then we laid waste as far as Nophah,
Which reaches to (P)Medeba.”

31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 32 Then Moses sent to [c]spy out (Q)Jazer; and they took its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.

King Og Defeated(R)

33 (S)And they turned and went up by the way to (T)Bashan. So Og king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle (U)at Edrei. 34 Then the Lord said to Moses, (V)“Do not fear him, for I have [d]delivered him into your hand, with all his people and his land; and (W)you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.” 35 (X)So they defeated him, his sons, and all his people, until there was no survivor left him; and they took possession of his land.
