¹⁵ you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely,^[a](A) both its people and its livestock.^(B)

² and when the Lord your God has delivered^(A) them over to you and you have defeated them, then you must destroy^(B) them totally.^[a](C) Make no treaty^(D) with them, and show them no mercy.^(E)

²⁸ “‘But nothing that a person owns and devotes^[a](A) to the Lord—whether a human being or an animal or family land—may be sold or redeemed; everything so devoted is most holy^(B) to the Lord.

²⁰ “Whoever sacrifices to any god^(A) other than the Lord must be destroyed.^[a](B)

³ And again they shouted:

¹⁸ When they see the smoke of her burning,^(A) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city^(B)?’^{(C) 19} They will throw dust on their heads,^(D) and with weeping and mourning^(E) cry out:

²¹ Then a mighty angel^(J) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,^(K) and said:

¹⁶ The beast and the ten horns^(A) you saw will hate the prostitute.^(B) They will bring her to ruin^(C) and leave her naked;^(D) they will eat her flesh^(E) and burn her with fire.^(F)

⁴⁸ The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.^(A)

²⁴ Then they burned the whole city^(A) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron^(B) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.^(C)
