The Penalty for Israel’s Rebellion^(A)

³⁴ “And the Lord heard the sound of your words, and was angry, ^(B)and took an oath, saying,

¹⁵ So ^(A)I also raised My hand in an oath to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, ^(B)‘flowing with milk and honey,’ ^(C)the glory of all lands,

¹⁴ And the time we took to come ^(A)from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered was thirty-eight years, ^(B)until all the generation of the men of war ^[a]was consumed from the midst of the camp, ^(C)just as the Lord had sworn to them. ¹⁵ For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they ^[b]were consumed.

⁸ Thus your fathers did ^(A)when I sent them away from Kadesh Barnea ^(B)to see the land. ⁹ For ^(C)when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, so that they did not go into the land which the Lord had given them. ^10 (D)So the Lord’s anger was aroused on that day, and He swore an oath, saying, ¹¹ ‘Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, ^(E)from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because ^(F)they have not wholly followed Me, ¹² except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, ^(G)for they have wholly followed the Lord.’ ¹³ So the Lord’s anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them ^(H)wander in the wilderness forty years, until ^(I)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone.

^22 (A)because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now ^(B)these ten times, and have not heeded My voice, ²³ they certainly shall not ^(C)see the land of which I ^[a]swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it. ²⁴ But My servant ^(D)Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and ^(E)has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it. ²⁵ Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley; tomorrow turn and ^(F)move out into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.”

Death Sentence on the Rebels

²⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, ^27 (G)“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? ^(H)I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me. ²⁸ Say to them, ^(I)‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: ²⁹ The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, ^(J)all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above. ^30 (K)Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I ^[b]swore I would make you dwell in.
