El carnero y el macho cabrío

8 El año tercero del reinado de Baltasar, yo, Daniel, tuve una visión, aparte de la que había tenido anteriormente. 2 Me vi a mí mismo en Susa, plaza fuerte de la provincia de Elam, a orillas del río Ulay. 3 Cuando alcé la vista pude ver un carnero junto al río. Tenía dos cuernos enormes, uno más alto que otro; pero el más alto había sido el último en salir. 4 Pude ver también cómo el carnero embestía en tres direcciones: oeste, norte y sur. Ninguna bestia era capaz de aguantar su embestida; nadie podía sustraerse a su poder. Hacía lo que quería y su dominio crecía por momentos.

5 Estaba yo tratando de comprender lo que veía, cuando apareció por el occidente un macho cabrío, que iba recorriendo el mundo sin tocar el suelo. Tenía entre los ojos un cuerno enorme. 6 Cuando llegó cerca del carnero de dos cuernos que yo había visto junto al río, se abalanzó contra él con todas sus fuerzas. 7 Vi cómo se acercaba al carnero corriendo y cómo lo embestía enfurecido: el carnero, con los dos cuernos rotos, fue incapaz ya de hacerle frente. El macho cabrío lo abatió por tierra y lo pisoteó, sin que nadie pudiera ayudar al carnero.

8 El macho cabrío creció y creció, y cuando más fuerte era, se le rompió el cuerno grande: en su lugar aparecieron otros cuatro cuernos, orientados hacia los cuatro puntos cardinales. 9 De uno de ellos salió otro cuerno pequeño, que creció y creció hacia el sur, hacia el este y hacia la Tierra del Esplendor. 10 Creció tanto que llegó hasta donde estaba el ejército del cielo, derribó parte de él por tierra y pisoteó las estrellas. 11 Llegó incluso a desafiar al jefe mismo del ejército del cielo; suprimió el sacrificio permanente y socavó los cimientos de su santuario. 12 En pleno apogeo de la rebeldía, le fueron entregados el ejército y el sacrificio permanente; acabó con la lealtad y tuvo éxito en todo cuanto emprendió. 13 Oí entonces hablar a uno de los santos, mientras otro le preguntaba:

— ¿Cuánto durará todavía esta visión del sacrificio permanente [suprimido], la profanación devastadora, el santuario entregado y el ejército [del cielo] pisoteado?

14 El otro respondió:

— Durará dos mil trescientas tardes y mañanas. Después será purificado el santuario.

Interpretación de la visión

15 Mientras yo, Daniel, contemplaba la visión y hacía lo posible por entenderla, se presentó ante mí alguien con aspecto humano. 16 Oí también una voz humana proveniente del río Ulay, que gritaba:

— Gabriel, interpreta la visión a este tal Daniel.

17 Se acercó entonces [Gabriel] adonde yo estaba. Cuando llegó, me eché por tierra asustado. Él me dijo:

— Has de saber, hijo de hombre, que la visión se refiere al tiempo final.

18 Mientras me hablaba, permanecí con el rostro en tierra, como aletargado. Pero él me tocó e hizo que me incorporase. 19 Después continuó:

— Te voy a dar a conocer lo que sucederá cuando pase el tiempo de la cólera, porque ya está fijado el fin. 20 El carnero que has visto con dos cuernos representa a los reyes de Media y de Persia. 21 El macho cabrío peludo representa al imperio de Grecia, y el enorme cuerno que tiene entre los ojos no es otro que el primer rey. 22 Los cuatro cuernos que ocuparon el lugar del cuerno que se rompió representan a los cuatro reinos salidos de esa nación, aunque no serán tan poderosos como el primero.

23 Cuando sus reinados lleguen al final
y su perversión alcance su límite,
vendrá un rey insolente e intrigante.
24 Crecerá fuerte y poderoso,
será un terrible destructor,
triunfará en todas sus empresas;
destruirá a la gente poderosa,
también al pueblo de los santos.
25 Con su astucia hará que triunfe
la traición en todos sus propósitos;
pensará que es el más grande.
Destruirá a muchos confiados,
se alzará contra el príncipe de príncipes,
pero al fin será destrozado,
sin intervención de poderes humanos.

26 La visión de las tardes y las mañanas, tal como ha sido revelada, es digna de crédito, pero mantenla en secreto, pues se cumplirá pasado mucho tiempo.

27 Yo, Daniel, quedé debilitado y estuve enfermo durante unos días. Pasada ya mi postración, fui a ocuparme de los asuntos del rey. Sin embargo, la visión me tenía desconcertado, pues no acababa de entenderla.

8 «En el tercer año del reinado de Belsasar yo, Daniel, tuve una visión, después de la que ya había tenido. 2 En ella me veía en la ciudad de Susa, en la provincia de Elam, junto al río Ulay. 3 Me fijé y vi ante mí un carnero con sus dos cuernos. Estaba junto al río y tenía cuernos largos. Uno de ellos era más largo y le había salido después. 4 Me quedé observando cómo el carnero atacaba hacia el oeste, hacia el norte y hacia el sur. Ningún animal podía hacerle frente ni había tampoco quien pudiera librarse de su poder. El carnero hacía lo que quería y cada vez cobraba más fuerza.

5 »Mientras reflexionaba yo al respecto, de pronto, surgió del oeste un macho cabrío, que tenía un cuerno enorme entre los ojos. Cruzó toda la tierra sin tocar siquiera el suelo. 6 Luego se lanzó contra el carnero de los dos cuernos que yo había visto de pie junto al río y lo atacó furiosamente. 7 Yo vi cómo se acercó enfurecido, lo golpeó y le rompió los dos cuernos. El carnero no pudo hacerle frente, pues el macho cabrío lo derribó y lo pisoteó. Nadie pudo librar al carnero del poder del macho cabrío. 8 El macho cabrío cobró gran fuerza, pero en el momento de su mayor grandeza se le rompió el gran cuerno. En su lugar brotaron cuatro grandes cuernos que se alzaron contra los cuatro vientos del cielo.

9 »De uno de ellos salió otro cuerno, pequeño al principio, que extendió su poder hacia el sur, hacia el este y hacia la Tierra Hermosa. 10 Creció hasta alcanzar al ejército de los cielos e hizo caer a tierra algunos del ejército de las estrellas y los pisoteó. 11 Y creció hasta pretender ser tan grande como el comandante del ejército del Señor. Por su causa, se eliminó el sacrificio diario y se derribó el santuario. 12 Por la rebelión, le fueron entregados el ejército y el sacrificio diario; derribó la verdad, hizo cuanto quiso y en todo tuvo éxito.

13 »Escuché entonces que uno de los santos hablaba y que otro le preguntaba: “¿Cuánto tiempo va a tardar lo anunciado en esta visión: el sacrificio diario, la rebeldía desoladora, la entrega del santuario y la humillación del ejército?”.

14 »Y aquel santo me dijo: “Va a tardar dos mil trescientas tardes y mañanas. Después de eso, se purificará el santuario”.

Significado de la visión

15 »Mientras yo, Daniel, contemplaba la visión y trataba de entenderla, de repente apareció ante mí alguien de apariencia humana. 16 Escuché entonces una voz que desde el río Ulay gritaba: “¡Gabriel, dile a este hombre lo que significa la visión!”.

17 »Cuando él se acercó al lugar donde estaba, me aterroricé y caí rostro en tierra. Me dijo: “Hijo de hombre entiende que la visión se refiere al tiempo del fin”.

18 »Mientras me hablaba, yo estaba aturdido, con el rostro en tierra. Entonces me tocó y me puso de pie. 19 Y me dijo: “Voy a darte a conocer lo que sucederá después cuando llegue a su fin el tiempo de la ira de Dios, porque el fin llegará en el momento señalado. 20 El carnero de dos cuernos que has visto simboliza a los reyes de Media y de Persia. 21 El macho cabrío es el rey de Grecia y el cuerno grande que tiene entre los ojos es el primer rey. 22 Los cuatro cuernos que salieron en lugar del que fue hecho pedazos simbolizan a los cuatro reinos que surgirán de esa nación, pero que no tendrán el mismo poder.

23 »”Hacia el final de esos reinos, cuando la rebelión de los impíos llegue al colmo, surgirá un rey de aspecto feroz, maestro de la intriga, 24 que llegará a tener mucho poder, pero no por sí mismo. Ese rey causará impresionantes destrozos y saldrá airoso en todo lo que emprenda. Destruirá a los poderosos y al pueblo santo. 25 Con su astucia propagará el engaño, creyéndose un ser superior. Destruirá a mucha gente que creía estar segura, y se enfrentará al Príncipe de los príncipes, pero será destruido sin intervención humana.

26 »”La visión de las tardes y mañanas que se te ha dado a conocer es verdadera. Pero mantenla en secreto, pues para eso falta mucho tiempo”.

27 »Yo, Daniel, quedé exhausto y estuve enfermo durante varios días. Luego me levanté para seguir atendiendo los asuntos del reino. Pero la visión me dejó pasmado, pues no lograba comprenderla».

The Vision of the Ram and Goat

8 In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar the king, a vision appeared to me, [a]Daniel, after the one which appeared to me [b]previously. 2 And I (A)looked in the vision. And it happened that while I was looking, I was in the citadel of (B)Susa, which is in the province of (C)Elam; and I looked in the vision, and I myself was beside the Ulai [c]Canal. 3 Then I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, a (D)ram which had two horns was standing in front of the [d]canal. Now the two horns were [e]long, but one was [f]longer than the other, with the [g]longer one coming up last. 4 I saw the ram (E)butting westward, northward, and southward, and no other beasts could stand before it, nor was there anyone to deliver from its [h]power, but (F)it did as it pleased and magnified itself.

5 And while I was considering, behold, a male goat was coming from the west over the surface of the whole earth without touching the ground; and the [i]goat had a (G)conspicuous horn between its eyes. 6 Then it came up to the ram that had the two horns, which I had seen standing in front of the [j]canal, and ran at it in his strong wrath. 7 And I saw it reach the side of the ram, and it was enraged at it; and it struck the ram and broke its two horns in pieces, and the ram had no strength to stand in [k]opposition to it. So it threw it down to the ground and trampled on it, and there was none to deliver the ram from its [l]power. 8 Then the male goat magnified itself exceedingly. But as soon as (H)it was mighty, the (I)large horn was broken; and in its place there came up four conspicuous horns toward the (J)four winds of [m]heaven.

The Small Horn

9 And out of one of them came forth a rather (K)small horn. And it grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the [n](L)Beautiful Land. 10 Then it grew up to the host of heaven and caused some of the host and some of the (M)stars to fall to the earth, and it (N)trampled them down. 11 And it even (O)magnified itself [o]to be equal with the [p]Commander of the host; and it removed the (P)regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down. 12 And on account of transgression the host will be given over to the horn along with the regular sacrifice; and it will (Q)throw truth down to the ground and do its will and succeed. 13 Then I heard a (R)holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that particular one who was speaking, “(S)How long will the vision about the regular sacrifice apply, [q]while the transgression causes desolation, so as to allow both the holy place and the host [r]to be (T)trampled?” 14 He said to me, “For (U)2,300 evenings and mornings; then the holy place will be [s]made righteous.”

Daniel Seeks to Understand the Vision

15 Now it happened when (V)I, Daniel, had seen the vision, that I sought [t]to understand it; and behold, standing before me was one [u]who had the appearance of a (W)man. 16 And I heard the voice of a man between the banks of Ulai, and he called out and said, “(X)Gabriel, give this man an understanding of what has appeared.” 17 So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was terrified and (Y)fell on my face; but he said to me, “Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the (Z)time of the end.”

18 Now while he was talking with me, I (AA)sank into a deep sleep with my face to the ground; but he (AB)touched me and made me stand [v]upright. 19 Then he said, “Behold, I am going to (AC)let you know what will happen at the final period of the indignation, for it pertains to the appointed time of the end. 20 The (AD)ram which you saw with the two horns is the kings of Media and Persia. 21 Now the shaggy [w]goat is the [x]king of Greece, and the large horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 And the (AE)broken horn and the four horns that stood in its place are four kingdoms which will take their stand from his nation, although not with his power.

23 In the latter period of their [y]reign,
When the transgressors have [z]run their course,
A king will stand,
[aa]Insolent and skilled in [ab]intrigue.
24 His power will be mighty, but not by his own power,
And he will [ac](AF)destroy to an [ad]astonishing degree
And succeed and do his will;
He will [ae]destroy mighty men and [af]the holy people.
25 And through his insight
He will cause deceit to succeed by his hand;
And he will magnify himself in his heart,
And he will [ag]destroy many while they are [ah]at ease.
He will even (AG)stand against the Prince of princes,
But he will be broken (AH)without hands.
26 And what had appeared about the evenings and mornings
Which has been told is (AI)true;
But as for you, (AJ)conceal the vision,
For it pertains to many (AK)days in the future.”

27 Then I, Daniel, was [ai](AL)exhausted and sick for days. Then I rose up again and (AM)did the king’s work; but I was appalled at what had appeared, and there was none to make me understand it.

8 In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first.

2 And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.

3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.

5 And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.

6 And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.

7 And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.

8 Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.

10 And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.

11 Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down.

12 And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.

19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.

20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.

21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
