Даниил в ямата с лъвовете

6 ^(A)Видя се добре на Дарий да постави над царството сто и двадесет сатрапи, които да бъдат по цялото царство,

²и над тях – трима князе, един от които беше Даниил, за да дават тези сатрапи сметка на тях и така царят да не губи.

³^(B)В това време този Даниил се отличаваше от другите князе и сатрапите, защото в него имаше превъзходен дух; и царят намисли да го постави над цялото царство.

⁴^(C)Тогава князете и сатрапите се стараеха да намерят причина против Даниил относно делата на царството; но не можаха да намерят никаква причина или вина, защото той беше верен и в него не бе намерена никаква погрешка или вина.

⁵И така, тези хора казаха: Няма да намерим никаква причина против този Даниил, освен ако не открием нещо относно закона на неговия Бог.

⁶^(D)И така, тези князе и сатрапи се събраха при царя и му казаха така: Царю Дарий, да си жив довека!

⁷Всички князе на царството, наместниците и сатрапите, съветниците и управителите, като се съветваха, решиха да поискат от царя да издаде указ и да обяви строга забрана, че който, до тридесет дни, би отправил някаква молба до който и да било бог или човек освен до тебе, царю, той да бъде хвърлен в рова на лъвовете.

⁸^(E)Сега, царю, утвърди забраната и подпиши писмената ѝ форма, за да не се измени според закона на мидяните и персите, който не се изменя.

⁹Затова цар Дарий подписа писмената забрана.

¹⁰^(F)А Даниил, щом научи, че била подписана писмената забрана, влезе у дома си и като държеше прозорците на стаята си отворени към Йерусалим, падаше на колената си три пъти на ден, молещ се и благодарящ пред своя Бог, както правеше и преди това.

¹¹Тогава онези хора се събраха и откриха, че Даниил отправяше молба и се молеше пред своя Бог.

¹²^(G)Затова се приближиха и говориха пред царя за царската забрана, като казаха: Не подписа ли ти забрана, че всеки човек, който до тридесет дни би отправил молба до който и да било бог или човек освен до тебе, царю, ще бъде хвърлен в рова на лъвовете? Царят отговори: Това е вярно според закона на мидяните и персите, който не се изменя.

¹³^(H)Тогава те казаха пред царя: Онзи Даниил, който е от пленените юдеи, не зачита нито тебе, царю, нито подписаната от тебе забрана, а принася молбата си три пъти на ден.

¹⁴^(I)Тогава царят, като чу тези думи, много се наскърби и взе присърце да отърве Даниил; и се трудеше до залязването на слънцето да го избави.

¹⁵^(J)Тогава онези хора се събраха при царя и му казаха: Знай, царю, че е закон на мидяните и персите, че никаква забрана или постановление, което царят утвърди, да не се изменя.

¹⁶Тогава царят заповяда и докараха Даниил, и го хвърлиха в рова на лъвовете. А царят проговори на Даниил: Твоят Бог, на Когото ти служиш непрестанно, Той ще те отърве.

¹⁷^(K)После, като донесоха камък и го поставиха върху устието на рова, царят го запечати със своя печат и с печата на големците си, за да не се измени никакво намерение относно Даниил.

¹⁸^(L)Тогава царят отиде в палата си и пренощува гладен; нито остави да донесат пред него музикални инструменти; и сънят побегна от него.

¹⁹На сутринта царят стана много рано и побърза да отиде при рова на лъвовете.

²⁰^(M)И като се приближи до рова, извика с плачевен глас към Даниил. Царят проговори на Даниил: Данииле, служителю на живия Бог, твоят Бог, на Когото ти служиш непрестанно, можа ли да те отърве от лъвовете?

²¹^(N)Тогава Даниил отвърна на царя: Царю, да си жив довека!

²²^(O)Моят Бог прати ангела Си да запуши устата на лъвовете и те не ми навредиха, защото се оказах невинен пред Него; също и пред тебе, царю, не съм извършил никакво прегрешение.

²³^(P)Тогава царят се зарадва много и заповяда да извадят Даниил от рова. И когато Даниил беше изваден от рова, никаква повреда не бе открита у него, защото беше уповал на своя Бог.

²⁴^(Q)Тогава по заповед на царя докараха онези хора, които бяха наклеветили Даниил, и хвърлиха тях, децата и жените им в рова на лъвовете; и преди да стигнат до дъното на рова, лъвовете ги нападнаха и счупиха всичките им кости.

²⁵^(R)Тогава цар Дарий писа до всички племена, народи и езици, които живеят по целия свят: Мир да се умножи на вас!

²⁶^(S)Издавам указ – в цялата държава, над която царувам, да треперят хората и да се боят пред Данииловия Бог; защото Той е живият Бог, Който е утвърден довека, и Неговото царство е царство, което няма да се наруши, и властта Му ще трае до край.

The Plot against Daniel

6 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom; ²and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss. ³Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other presidents and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. ⁴Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom; but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him. ⁵Then these men said, “We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.”

⁶Then these presidents and satraps came by agreement^[a] to the king and said to him, “O King Darius, live for ever! ⁷All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the counselors and the governors are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an interdict, that whoever makes petition to any god or man for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions. ⁸Now, O king, establish the interdict and sign the document, so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.” ⁹Therefore King Darius signed the document and interdict.

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

¹⁰When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem; and he got down upon his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. ¹¹Then these men came by agreement^[b] and found Daniel making petition and supplication before his God. ¹²Then they came near and said before the king, concerning the interdict, “O king! Did you not sign an interdict, that any man who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered, “The thing stands fast, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.” ¹³Then they answered before the king, “That Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no heed to you, O king, or the interdict you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.”

¹⁴Then the king, when he heard these words, was much distressed, and set his mind to deliver Daniel; and he labored till the sun went down to rescue him. ¹⁵Then these men came by agreement^[c] to the king, and said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no interdict or ordinance which the king establishes can be changed.”

¹⁶Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!” ¹⁷And a stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel. ¹⁸Then the king went to his palace, and spent the night fasting; no diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him.

Daniel Saved from the Lions

¹⁹Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions. ²⁰When he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish and said to Daniel, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?” ²¹Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live for ever! ²²My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no wrong.” ²³Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of hurt was found upon him, beause he had trusted in his God. ²⁴And the king commanded, and those men who had accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions—they, their children, and their wives; and before they reached the bottom of the den the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces.

²⁵Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: “Peace be multiplied to you. ²⁶I make a decree, that in all my royal dominion men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel,

for he is the living God,
    enduring for ever;
his kingdom shall never be destroyed,
    and his dominion shall be to the end.
²⁷He delivers and rescues,
    he works signs and wonders
    in heaven and on earth,
he who has saved Daniel
    from the power of the lions.”

²⁸So this Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

6 ^(5:31)The kingdom passed to Daryavesh the Mede when he was about sixty-two years old. ²⁽¹⁾Daryavesh decided to set over the kingdom 120 viceroys to rule throughout the entire kingdom, ³⁽²⁾with three chiefs over them, of whom Dani’el was one, so that these viceroys could be responsible to them and so that the king’s interests would be safeguarded. ⁴⁽³⁾But because an extraordinary spirit was in this Dani’el, he so distinguished himself above the other chiefs and the viceroys that the king considered putting him in charge of the whole kingdom. ⁵⁽⁴⁾The other chiefs and the viceroys tried to find a cause for complaint against Dani’el in regard to how he performed his governing duties, but they could find nothing to complain about, no fault; on the contrary, because he was so faithful, not a single instance of negligence or faulty administration could be found.

⁶⁽⁵⁾Then these men said, “We’re not going to find any cause for complaint against this Dani’el unless we can find something against him in regard to the law of his god.” ⁷⁽⁶⁾So these chiefs and viceroys descended on the king and said to him, “King Daryavesh, live forever! ⁸⁽⁷⁾All the chiefs of the kingdom, along with the prefects, viceroys, advisers and governors, have met and agreed that the king should issue a decree putting in force the following law: ‘Whoever makes a request of any god or man during the next thirty days, except of you, your majesty, is to be thrown into the lion pit.’ ⁹⁽⁸⁾Now, your majesty, issue this decree over your signature, so that it cannot be revoked, as required by the law of the Medes and Persians, which is itself irrevocable.” ¹⁰⁽⁹⁾So King Daryavesh signed the document, and the decree became law.

¹¹⁽¹⁰⁾On learning that the document had been signed, Dani’el went home. The windows of his upstairs room were open in the direction of Yerushalayim; and there he kneeled down three times a day and prayed, giving thanks before his God, just as he had been doing before. ¹²⁽¹¹⁾Then these men descended on Dani’el and found him making requests and pleading before his God. ¹³⁽¹²⁾So they went to remind the king of his royal decree: “Didn’t you sign a law prohibiting anyone from making requests of any god or man within thirty days, except yourself, your majesty, on pain of being thrown into the lion pit?” The king answered, “Yes, that is true, as required by the law of the Medes and Persians, which is itself irrevocable.” ¹⁴⁽¹³⁾They replied to the king, “That Dani’el, one of the exiles from Y’hudah, respects neither you, your majesty, nor the decree you signed; instead, he continues praying three times a day.” ¹⁵⁽¹⁴⁾When the king heard this report, he was very upset. He determined to save Dani’el and worked until sunset to find a way to rescue him. ¹⁶⁽¹⁵⁾But these men descended on the king and said to him, “Remember, your majesty, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no decree or edict, once issued by the king, can be revoked.”

¹⁷⁽¹⁶⁾So the king gave the order, and they brought Dani’el and threw him into the lion pit. The king said to Dani’el, “Your God, whom you are always serving, will save you.” ¹⁸⁽¹⁷⁾A stone was brought to block the opening of the pit, and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords, so that nothing concerning Dani’el could be changed.

¹⁹⁽¹⁸⁾Then the king returned to his palace. He spent the night fasting and refusing to be entertained, as sleep eluded him. ²⁰⁽¹⁹⁾Early in the morning, the king got up and hurried to the lion pit. ²¹⁽²⁰⁾On approaching the pit where Dani’el was, the king cried in a pained voice to Dani’el, “Dani’el, servant of the living God! Has your God, whom you are always serving, been able to save you from the lions?” ²²⁽²¹⁾Then Dani’el answered the king, “May the king live forever! ²³⁽²²⁾My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths, so they haven’t hurt me. This is because before him I was found innocent; and also I have done no harm to you, your majesty.” ²⁴⁽²³⁾The king was overjoyed and ordered Dani’el taken up from the pit. So Dani’el was taken up from the pit, and he was found to be completely unharmed, because he had trusted in his God.

²⁵⁽²⁴⁾Then the king gave an order, and they brought those men who had accused Dani’el, and they threw them into the lion pit — them, their children and their wives — and before they even reached the bottom of the pit, the lions had them in their control and broke all their bones to pieces.

²⁶⁽²⁵⁾King Daryavesh wrote all the peoples, nations and languages living anywhere on earth:

“Shalom rav! [Abundant peace!]

²⁷⁽²⁶⁾“I herewith issue a decree that everywhere in my kingdom, people are to tremble and be in awe of the God of Dani’el.

    “For he is the living God;
    he endures forever.
    His kingdom will never be destroyed;
    his rulership will last till the end.
²⁸⁽²⁷⁾He saves, rescues, does signs and wonders
    both in heaven and on earth.
    He delivered Dani’el
    from the power of the lions.”

²⁹⁽²⁸⁾So this Dani’el prospered during the reign of Daryavesh, and also during the reign of Koresh the Persian.
