4 Mientras yo, Nabucodonosor, vivía tranquilo en mi residencia, rodeado de prosperidad en mi palacio, 2 tuve un sueño que me preocupó; las visiones que pasaron por mi mente mientras dormía llegaron a alarmarme. 3 Di entonces la orden de que trajeran a mi presencia a todos los sabios de Babilonia, con la intención de que me proporcionaran la interpretación del sueño. 4 Así pues, se presentaron magos, adivinos, astrólogos y hechiceros, y les relaté mi sueño, pero no supieron dar con su interpretación. 5 Al final se presentó ante mí Daniel, apodado Baltasar en referencia al nombre de mi dios y partícipe del espíritu de los dioses santos. Y yo le relaté mi sueño:
6 — Baltasar, jefe de los magos, sé que posees el espíritu de los dioses santos y que no hay misterios para ti. Escucha el sueño que he tenido e interprétalo. 7 En las visiones que pasaban por mi mente mientras dormía, contemplé lo siguiente:
Había un árbol enorme
en el centro mismo de la tierra.
8 El árbol creció corpulento,
su copa llegaba al cielo,
visible desde toda la tierra.
9 Tenía un ramaje magnífico
y tal cantidad de frutos
que había comida para todos.
Las fieras del campo
venían a cobijarse a su sombra;
todas las aves del cielo
acudían a anidar en sus ramas.
Todos los seres vivientes
se nutrían de aquel árbol.
10 En las visiones que pasaban por mi mente mientras dormía, pude ver cómo un santo vigilante bajaba del cielo 11 y gritaba a pleno pulmón:
¡Talen el árbol, corten su ramaje;
arranquen sus hojas, tiren sus frutos!
Que las bestias huyan de debajo del árbol,
que los pájaros todos abandonen sus ramas.
12 Pero dejen en tierra tocón y raíces,
sujetos con cadenas de hierro y de bronce,
como una más de las matas del campo.
Que el rocío del cielo lo empape de humedad,
que comparta con las bestias la hierba del campo.
13 Que sea desposeído de entendimiento humano,
que su razón se equipare a la de un animal,
hasta que hayan pasado siete años.
14 Esta es la sentencia que dictan los Vigilantes,
esta es la decisión tomada por los Santos.
Así reconocerán todos los vivientes
que el Altísimo controla los reinos humanos:
se los da a quien le place y ensalza al más humilde.
15 Este es el sueño que tuve yo, el rey Nabucodonosor. Por tu parte, Baltasar, dime cómo se interpreta, pues ningún sabio de mi reino ha podido hacerlo. Tú serás sin duda capaz de ello, pues participas del espíritu de los dioses santos.
16 Daniel (apodado Baltasar) permaneció de momento perplejo, alarmado por sus pensamientos. El rey insistió:
— Baltasar, no te sientas alarmado por el sueño y su interpretación.
Baltasar contestó:
— Señor, ¡ojalá este sueño se refiriese a tus adversarios y tus enemigos fuesen los destinatarios de su interpretación! 17 El árbol que viste crecer corpulento, cuya copa llegaba hasta el cielo y que era visible desde toda la tierra, 18 que tenía un ramaje magnífico y tal cantidad de frutos que podía alimentar a todos, con una sombra bajo la cual iban a cobijarse los animales salvajes y unas ramas en las que anidaban las aves del cielo, ese árbol 19 eres tú, majestad. Te has hecho grande y poderoso: tu grandeza ha llegado hasta el cielo y tu poder se ha expandido por los confines de la tierra.
20 También viste, majestad, a un vigilante santo que bajaba del cielo y decía: “Talen el árbol y háganlo astillas, pero dejen en tierra el tocón y las raíces, sujetos con cadenas de hierro y de bronce, como una más de las matas del campo. Que lo empape el rocío del cielo y se alimente como las bestias del campo, hasta que pasen siete años”. 21 Pues bien, majestad, esta es su interpretación y la decisión que el Altísimo ha tomado sobre el rey, mi señor: 22 Dejarás de estar entre las personas y vivirás en compañía de las bestias del campo. Te darán hierba, igual que a los toros, quedarás empapado por el rocío del cielo. Tendrán que transcurrir siete años hasta que reconozcas que el Altísimo tiene poder sobre los reinos humanos, y los da a quien le place. 23 La orden de dejar el tocón y las raíces del árbol significa que el reino te será devuelto en cuanto reconozcas que el único que tiene poder es el Dios del cielo. 24 Así pues, majestad, acepta de buen grado mi consejo: corrige tus desvíos haciendo buenas obras y expía tus delitos practicando la misericordia con los pobres; de ese modo, se prolongará tu felicidad.
Cumplimiento del sueño
25 Esto fue lo que le sucedió al rey Nabucodonosor. 26 Transcurridos doce meses, mientras paseaba por la terraza del palacio real de Babilonia, 27 el rey iba pensando: “Esta es la gran Babilonia, construida por mí como residencia real, obra de mi poder y manifestación de mi magnificencia”.
28 Todavía andaba el rey con estos pensamientos, cuando una voz bajó del cielo:
— Contigo hablo, rey Nabucodonosor: has sido desposeído de tu reino. 29 Serás retirado de en medio de las personas y vivirás con las bestias del campo; comerás hierba como los toros, y tendrán que transcurrir siete años hasta que reconozcas que el Altísimo tiene poder sobre los reinos humanos y que los da a quien le place.
30 En aquel mismo momento se cumplieron en Nabucodonosor las palabras pronunciadas: dejó de vivir entre personas y empezó a comer hierba como los toros, su cuerpo quedó empapado por el rocío del cielo, los cabellos le crecieron como plumas de águila y le salieron uñas como las de las aves.
31 Pasado el tiempo fijado, yo, Nabucodonosor, alcé los ojos al cielo y recobré la razón. Bendije entonces al Altísimo, alabé y glorifiqué al que vive eternamente, cuyo poder es eterno y cuyo reino no tiene fin. 32 Ante él nada son los habitantes de la tierra, y hace lo que quiere con el ejército del cielo y con los habitantes de la tierra. Nadie puede detenerle la mano ni pedirle cuentas de lo que hace.
33 En aquel momento recobré la razón. También recuperé el honor y la majestad, para gloria de mi reino. Mis consejeros y ministros me reclamaron, se me devolvió el reino y se acrecentó mi poder. 34 Por eso yo, Nabucodonosor, alabo, ensalzo y reconozco la gloria del Rey del cielo: todas sus obras son verdaderas; todas sus formas de actuar, justas. Él tiene poder para humillar a las personas arrogantes.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream About a Tree
4 King Nebuchadnezzar sent this letter to the many nations and language groups living around the world.
Greetings:
2 I am very happy to tell you about the miracles and wonderful things that the Most High God did for me.
3 God has done amazing miracles!
He has done powerful miracles!
His kingdom continues forever;
his rule will continue for all generations.
4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at my palace. I was happy and successful. 5 I had a dream that made me afraid. I was lying on my bed, and I saw pictures and visions in my mind. These things made me very afraid. 6 So I gave an order that all the wise men of Babylon be brought to me to tell me what my dream meant. 7 When the men of magic and the Chaldeans came, I told them about the dream, but they could not tell me what it meant. 8 Finally, Daniel came to me. (I gave Daniel the name Belteshazzar to honor my god. The spirit of the holy gods is in him.) I told him about my dream. 9 I said, “Belteshazzar, you are the most important of all the men of magic. I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you. I know there is no secret that is too hard for you to understand. This was what I dreamed. Tell me what it means. 10 These are the visions I saw while I was lying in my bed: I looked, and there in front of me was a tree standing in the middle of the earth. The tree was very tall. 11 The tree grew large and strong. The top of the tree touched the sky.[a] It could be seen from anywhere on earth. 12 The leaves of the tree were beautiful. It had much good fruit on it. And on the tree was plenty of food for everyone. The wild animals found shelter under the tree, and the birds lived in its branches. Every animal ate from the tree.
13 “I was looking at those things in the vision while lying on my bed. And then I saw a holy angel coming down from heaven. 14 He spoke very loud and said, ‘Cut down the tree, and cut off its branches. Strip off its leaves. Scatter its fruit around. The animals that are under the tree will run away. The birds that are in its branches will fly away. 15 But let the stump and roots stay in the ground. Put a band of iron and bronze around it. The stump and roots will stay in the field with the grass all around it. It will live among the wild animals and plants in the fields. It will become wet with dew. 16 He will not think like a man any longer. He will have the mind of an animal. Seven seasons will pass while he is like this.’
17 “Holy angels announced this punishment so that all the people on earth may know that God Most High rules over human kingdoms. God gives those kingdoms to whoever he wants, and he chooses humble people to rule them.
18 “That is what I, King Nebuchadnezzar, dreamed. Now, Belteshazzar,[b] tell me what it means. None of the wise men in my kingdom can tell me what that dream means. But Belteshazzar, you can interpret the dream because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
19 Then Daniel (also called Belteshazzar) became very quiet for a while. What he was thinking bothered him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream or its meaning make you afraid.”
Then Belteshazzar answered the king, “My lord, I wish the dream were about your enemies, and I wish the meaning of the dream were about those against you. 20-21 You saw a tree in your dream. The tree grew large and strong. Its top touched the sky, and it could be seen from all over the earth. Its leaves were beautiful, and it had plenty of fruit. The fruit gave plenty of food for everyone. It was a home for the wild animals, and its branches were nesting places for the birds. You saw that tree. 22 King, you are that tree! You have become great and powerful. You are like the tall tree that touched the sky—your power reaches to the far parts of the earth.
23 “King, you saw a holy angel coming down from heaven. He said, ‘Cut the tree down and destroy it. Put a band of iron and bronze around the stump and leave the stump and its roots in the ground. Leave it in the grass in the field. It will become wet with dew. He will live like a wild animal. Seven seasons will pass while he is like this.’
24 “King, this is the meaning of the dream. God Most High has commanded these things to happen to my lord the king: 25 King Nebuchadnezzar, you will be forced to go away from people. You will live among the wild animals. You will eat grass like cattle, and you will become wet with dew. Seven seasons will pass, and then you will learn this lesson. You will learn God Most High rules over human kingdoms and gives them to whoever he wants.
26 “The command to leave the stump of the tree and its roots in the ground means this: Your kingdom will be given back to you. This will happen when you learn that Most High God rules your kingdom. 27 So, King, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Stop doing bad things and be kind to poor people. Then you might continue to be successful.”
28 All these things happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29-30 Twelve months after the dream, King Nebuchadnezzar was walking on the roof[c] of his palace in Babylon. While on the roof, the king said, “Look at Babylon! I built this great city. It is my palace. I built this great place by my power. I built this place to show how great I am.”
31 The words were still in his mouth when a voice came from heaven. The voice said, “King Nebuchadnezzar, these things will happen to you: Your power as king has been taken away from you. 32 You will be forced to go away from people. You will live with the wild animals and eat grass like an ox. Seven seasons will pass before you learn your lesson. Then you will learn that God Most High rules over human kingdoms and gives them to whoever he wants.”
33 These things happened immediately. Nebuchadnezzar was forced to go away from people. He began eating grass like an ox. He became wet from dew. His hair grew long like the feathers of an eagle, and his nails grew long like the claws of a bird.
34 Then at the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up toward heaven, and I was in my right mind again. Then I gave praise to God Most High. I gave honor and glory to him who lives forever.
God rules forever!
His kingdom continues for all generations.
35 People on earth
are not really important.
God does what he wants
with the powers of heaven
and the people on earth.
No one can stop his powerful hand
or question what he does.
36 At that time God gave me my right mind again, and he gave back my great honor and power as king. My advisors and the royal people began to ask my advice again. I became the king again—even greater and more powerful than before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, give praise, honor, and glory to the King of Heaven. Everything he does is right. He is always fair, and he is able to make proud people humble!

Выслушай мой сон; истолкуй его мне. 7 Вот, что мне приснилось, когда я лежал в своей постели: я посмотрел и увидел дерево огромной высоты, стоявшее посреди земли. 8 Дерево выросло большим и сильным, вершиной оно касалось небес; его было видно до самых краёв земли. 9 Листья его были прекрасны, плоды – изобильны, и на нём была пища для всех. Под ним находили пристанище полевые звери, а небесные птицы жили на его ветвях; от него кормилось всякое живое существо.
10 В моём сне, когда я лежал в постели, я видел, как ангел, святой страж, сошёл с небес. 11 Он громко воскликнул: «Срубите дерево и отсеките его ветви; оборвите его листья и разбросайте плоды. Пусть звери удалятся из-под него, и птицы улетят с его ветвей. 12 Но пень с корнями, скованный железом и бронзой, пусть останется в земле среди полевой травы. Пусть орошает его небесная роса, пусть он живёт со зверями, среди земных растений. 13 Пусть отойдёт от него человеческий разум, и дастся ему разум звериный, пока не пройдёт семь лет[b]. 14 Решение возвещено по приговору стражей, постановление дано по воле ангелов, чтобы познали живущие, что Высочайший властвует над царствами смертных, отдаёт их тому, кому пожелает, и ставит над ними даже последних между людьми».
15 Таков сон, который приснился мне, царю Навуходоносору. Итак, Валтасисар, скажи мне его толкование, потому что никто из мудрецов моего царства не может мне его истолковать. Но ты можешь, потому что в тебе пребывает дух святых богов.
Даниял толкует сон
16 Тогда Даниял (называемый также Валтасисаром) пришёл на время в крайнее замешательство и устрашился собственных мыслей.
И царь сказал:
– Валтасисар, пусть ни сон, ни его значение не пугают тебя.
Валтасисар ответил:
– Мой господин, твоим бы врагам этот сон, и твоим бы неприятелям его значение! 17 Дерево, которое в твоём видении выросло большим и сильным, касалось вершиной небес и было видно всей земле, 18 с прекрасными листьями и изобильными плодами, всех кормящее, дающее пристанище полевым зверям и гнездовья в своих ветвях небесным птицам – 19 это ты, о царь! Ты стал великим и сильным; твоё величие возросло и достигло небес, а владычество твоё простирается до краёв земли.
20 Ты, царь, видел святого стража, спускающегося с небес и говорящего: «Срубите дерево и погубите его, но оставьте пень, сковав его железом и бронзой, среди полевой травы, и корни его пусть останутся в земле. Пусть его орошает небесная роса; пусть он живёт как дикие звери, пока не пройдёт семь лет».
21 Вот толкование, о царь, и вот решение Высочайшего против господина моего царя: 22 тебя прогонят от людей, и ты будешь жить с дикими зверями. Ты будешь есть траву, подобно волу, и тебя будет омывать небесная роса. Семь лет пройдёт, прежде чем ты признаешь, что Высочайший властвует над царствами смертных и отдаёт их, кому пожелает.
23 Повеление оставить пень с корнями означает, что твоё царство будет возвращено тебе, когда ты признаешь, что Небеса правят всем. 24 Поэтому пусть будет тебе угодно, о царь, принять мой совет: загладь свои грехи, творя правду, и свои беззакония – милосердием к притеснённым. Может быть, тогда твоё благоденствие и продолжится.
Исполнение сна
25 Всё это и произошло с царём Навуходоносором. 26 Двенадцать месяцев спустя, когда царь гулял по крыше[c] царского дворца в Вавилоне, 27 он сказал:
– Разве не я воздвиг этот великий Вавилон, царскую столицу, своей могучей силой и во славу своего величия?
28 Эти слова ещё были у него на устах, когда с небес раздался голос:
– Вот что определяется о тебе, царь Навуходоносор: твоя царская власть отнята у тебя. 29 Тебя прогонят от людей, и ты будешь жить с дикими зверями и есть траву, подобно волу. Семь лет пройдёт, прежде чем ты признаешь, что Высочайший властвует над царствами людскими и отдаёт их, кому пожелает.
30 И тотчас же сказанное о Навуходоносоре исполнилось. Его прогнали от людей, и он ел траву, подобно волу.[d] Его тело омывалось небесной росой до тех пор, пока его волосы не выросли длинными, как перья орла, а ногти не стали точно птичьи когти.
31 В конце этого времени я, Навуходоносор, поднял взор к небу, и мой разум вернулся ко мне. Тогда я благословил Высочайшего; я восхвалил и восславил Его, живущего вечно.
Владычество Его – вечное;
царство Его – из поколения в поколение.
32 Все обитатели земли
бессильны пред Ним.
Он поступает как хочет
с небесными силами
и обитателями земли.
Никто не властен удержать Его руку
или сказать Ему: «Что Ты сделал?»
33 В то же время, когда вернулся ко мне мой разум, ко мне вернулись и царская слава, и честь, и величие. Мои советники и мои приближённые возвратились ко мне, вновь сделали меня царём, и я стал ещё более велик, чем прежде. 34 Теперь я, Навуходоносор, хвалю, превозношу и славлю Царя небес, потому что всё, что Он делает, есть истина, и все Его пути праведны. А тех, кто ходит в гордыне, Он властен смирить.
