The King’s Dream

2 Now in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar [a](A)had dreams; and his spirit was troubled and his (B)sleep [b]left him. 2 Then the king [c]gave orders to call in the (C)soothsayer priests, the conjurers, the sorcerers, and the [d]Chaldeans, to [e]tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king. 3 The king said to them, “I [f](D)had a dream, and my spirit [g]is anxious to [h]understand the dream.”

4 Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in [i](E)Aramaic: “(F)O king, live forever! (G)Tell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.” 5 The king replied to the Chaldeans, “The command [j]from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you will be [k](H)torn limb from limb and your houses will be turned into a rubbish heap. 6 But if you declare the dream and its interpretation, you will receive from me (I)gifts and a reward and great honor; therefore declare to me the dream and its interpretation.” 7 They answered a second time and said, “Let the king (J)tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation.” 8 The king replied, “I know for certain that you are trying to buy time, because you have perceived that the command [l]from me is firm, 9 that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is only (K)one [m]decree for you. For you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt [n]words before me until the [o]situation is changed; therefore tell me the dream, so that I may (L)know that you can declare to me its interpretation.” 10 The Chaldeans answered [p]the king and said, “There is no person on earth who could declare the matter [q]to the king, because no great king or ruler has ever asked anything like this of any (M)soothsayer priest, sorcerer, or Chaldean. 11 Moreover, the thing which the king demands is difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it [r]to the king except (N)gods, whose (O)dwelling place is not with mortal flesh.”

12 Because of this, the king became (P)angry and extremely furious, and he gave orders to kill all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the [s]decree was issued that the wise men be killed; and they looked for (Q)Daniel and his friends, to [t]kill them.

14 Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to (R)Arioch, the captain of the king’s [u]bodyguard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon; 15 he said to Arioch, the king’s officer, “For what reason is the decree from the king so harsh?” Then Arioch informed Daniel of the matter. 16 So Daniel went in and requested of the king that he would give him a grace period, so that he might declare the interpretation to the king.

17 Then Daniel went to his house and informed his friends, (S)Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, about the matter, 18 so that they might (T)request compassion from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his friends would not be (U)killed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

The Secret Is Revealed to Daniel

19 Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night (V)vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; 20 Daniel said,

“May the name of God be (W)blessed forever and ever,
For (X)wisdom and power belong to Him.
21 It is He who (Y)changes the times and the periods;
He (Z)removes kings and appoints kings;
He gives (AA)wisdom to wise men,
And knowledge to [v]people of understanding.
22 It is He who (AB)reveals the profound and hidden things;
(AC)He knows what is in the darkness,
And the (AD)light dwells with Him.
23 To You, (AE)God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise,
For You have given me (AF)wisdom and power;
Even now You have made known to me what we (AG)requested of You,
For You have made known to us the king’s matter.”

24 Thereupon, Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to kill the wise men of Babylon; he went and said this to him: “(AH)Do not kill the wise men of Babylon! Take me [w]into the king’s presence, and I will declare the interpretation to the king.”

25 Then Arioch hurriedly (AI)brought Daniel [x]into the king’s presence and spoke to him as follows: “I have found a man among the [y](AJ)exiles from Judah who can make the interpretation known to the king!” 26 The king said to Daniel, whose name was (AK)Belteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?” 27 Daniel answered before the king and said, “As for the secret about which the king has inquired, neither (AL)wise men, sorcerers, soothsayer priests, nor diviners are able to declare it to the king. 28 However, there is a (AM)God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the [z](AN)latter days. This was your dream and the (AO)visions [aa]in your mind while on your bed. 29 As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts [ab]turned to what would take place [ac]in the future; and (AP)He who reveals secrets has made known to you what will take place. 30 But as for me, this secret has not been revealed to me [ad]for any (AQ)wisdom [ae]residing in me more than in any other living person, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may understand the (AR)thoughts of your [af]mind.

The King’s Dream

31 “You, O king, were watching and behold, there was a single great statue; that statue, which was large and [ag]of extraordinary radiance, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was [ah](AS)awesome. 32 The (AT)head of that statue was made of fine gold, its chest and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, and its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 You [ai]continued watching until a (AU)stone was broken off (AV)without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and (AW)crushed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed to pieces [aj]all at the same time, and they were (AX)like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that (AY)not a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great (AZ)mountain and filled the entire earth.

The Interpretation—Babylon the First Kingdom

36 “This was the dream; and now we will tell (BA)its interpretation before the king. 37 You, O king, are the (BB)king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the [ak]kingdom, the (BC)power, the strength, and the honor; 38 and wherever the sons of mankind live, or the (BD)animals of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has handed them over to you and has made you ruler over them all. You are the head of gold.

Medo-Persia and Greece

39 And after you another kingdom will arise inferior to you, then another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.

Rome

40 Then there will be a (BE)fourth kingdom as strong as iron; just as iron smashes and crushes everything, so, like iron that crushes, it will smash and crush all these things. 41 And in that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have within it some of the toughness of iron, since you saw the iron mixed with [al]common clay. 42 And just as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong, and part of it will be fragile. 43 In that you saw the iron mixed with [am]common clay, they will combine with one another [an]in [ao]their descendants; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not combine with pottery.

The Divine Kingdom

44 And in the days of those kings the (BF)God of heaven will (BG)set up a (BH)kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be [ap]left for another people; it will (BI)crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever. 45 Just as you saw that a (BJ)stone was broken off from the mountain without hands, and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the (BK)great God has made known to the king what (BL)will take place [aq]in the future; so the dream is certain and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

Daniel Promoted

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and paid (BM)humble respect to Daniel, and gave orders to present to him an offering and (BN)incense. 47 The king responded to Daniel and said, “(BO)Your God truly is a (BP)God of gods and a Lord of kings and a (BQ)revealer of secrets, since you have been able to reveal this secret.” 48 Then the king [ar](BR)promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts, and he made him ruler over the entire (BS)province of Babylon, and chief [as]prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 And Daniel made a request of the king, and he (BT)appointed (BU)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the king’s [at](BV)court.

2 En el segundo año del reinado de Nabucodonosor, este tuvo sueños[a], y se turbó su espíritu(A) y no podía dormir[b](B). 2 Entonces el rey mandó llamar a los magos[c], encantadores, hechiceros y caldeos[d], para que le explicaran al rey sus sueños(C). Vinieron, pues, y se presentaron ante el rey. 3 Y el rey les dijo: «He tenido un sueño[e](D), y mi espíritu se ha turbado por el deseo de entender[f] el sueño».

4 Entonces los caldeos hablaron al rey en arameo[g](E): «¡Oh rey, viva para siempre(F)! Cuente el sueño a sus siervos, y nosotros le declararemos la interpretación(G)». 5 El rey respondió a los caldeos: «Mis órdenes son firmes[h]: si no me dan a conocer el sueño y su interpretación, serán descuartizados y sus casas serán reducidas a escombros[i](H). 6 Pero si me declaran el sueño y su interpretación, recibirán de mí regalos, recompensas y grandes honores. Por tanto, declárenme el sueño y su interpretación(I)».

7 Respondieron ellos por segunda vez: «Refiera el rey su sueño a sus siervos, y declararemos la interpretación(J)». 8 Respondió el rey: «Ciertamente sé que quieren ganar[j] tiempo, porque ven que mis órdenes son firmes. 9 Si no me declaran el sueño, hay una sola sentencia[k](K) para ustedes. Porque se han concertado para hablar delante de mí palabras falsas y perversas[l](L) hasta que cambie la situación[m]. Por tanto, díganme el sueño para que yo sepa que me pueden dar su interpretación».

10 Los caldeos respondieron al[n] rey: «No hay hombre sobre la tierra que pueda declarar el asunto al[o] rey, puesto que ningún gran rey o gobernante jamás ha pedido cosa semejante a ningún mago[p], encantador o caldeo(M). 11 Lo que el rey demanda es difícil y no hay nadie que lo pueda declarar(N) al rey sino los dioses cuya morada no está entre los hombres[q](O)».

12 A causa de esto el rey se indignó y se enfureció(P) en gran manera y dio la orden de que mataran a todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 Y se publicó el decreto[r] de que mataran a todos los sabios. Buscaron también a Daniel y a sus amigos(Q) para matarlos.

14 Entonces Daniel habló con discreción y sensatez a Arioc, capitán de la guardia[s] del rey, que había salido para matar a los sabios de Babilonia(R). 15 Y preguntó a Arioc, capitán del rey: «¿Por qué es tan riguroso[t] el decreto[u] del rey?». Y Arioc informó a Daniel sobre el asunto. 16 Así que Daniel fue a pedirle al rey que le diera tiempo[v] para declarar la interpretación al rey.

17 Entonces Daniel fue a su casa e informó el asunto a sus amigos Ananías, Misael y Azarías(S), 18 para que pidieran misericordia del Dios del cielo acerca de este misterio(T), a fin de que no perecieran Daniel y sus amigos con el resto(U) de los sabios de Babilonia.

19 Entonces el misterio fue revelado a Daniel en una visión de noche(V). Daniel entonces bendijo al Dios del cielo, 20 y dijo:

«Sea el nombre de Dios bendito por los siglos de los siglos(W),
Porque la sabiduría y el poder son de Él(X).
21 -»Él es quien cambia los tiempos y las edades(Y);
Quita reyes y pone reyes(Z).
Da sabiduría a los sabios,
Y conocimiento a los entendidos[w](AA).
22 -»Él es quien revela lo profundo y lo escondido(AB).
Conoce lo que está en tinieblas(AC),
Y la luz mora con Él(AD).
23 -»A ti, Dios de mis padres(AE), yo doy gracias y alabo,
Porque me has dado sabiduría y poder(AF),
Y ahora me has revelado lo que te habíamos pedido,
Pues nos has dado a conocer el asunto del rey(AG)».

24 Después fue Daniel adonde estaba Arioc, a quien el rey había designado para dar muerte a los sabios de Babilonia(AH). Fue y le habló así: «No des muerte a los sabios de Babilonia. Llévame ante el rey, y declararé al rey la interpretación».

25 Entonces Arioc se apresuró a llevar a Daniel ante el rey(AI), y le dijo así: «He hallado a un hombre entre los deportados[x] de Judá(AJ) que dará a conocer al rey la interpretación». 26 El rey le preguntó a Daniel, a quien llamaban Beltsasar: «¿Eres tú capaz de darme a conocer el sueño que he visto y su interpretación(AK)?».

27 Daniel respondió ante el rey, y dijo: «En cuanto al misterio que el rey quiere saber, no hay sabios, encantadores, magos[y] ni adivinos que puedan declararlo al rey(AL). 28 Pero hay un Dios en el cielo que revela los misterios(AM), y Él ha dado a conocer al rey Nabucodonosor lo que sucederá al fin de los días(AN). Su sueño y las visiones que usted ha tenido[z] en su cama(AO) eran estos: 29 A usted, oh rey, en su cama le surgieron pensamientos sobre lo que habrá de suceder en el futuro[aa], y el que revela los misterios le ha dado a conocer lo que sucederá(AP). 30 En cuanto a mí, me ha sido revelado este misterio, no porque yo tenga[ab] más sabiduría que cualquier otro viviente, sino con el fin de dar a conocer al rey la interpretación(AQ), y para que usted entienda los pensamientos(AR) de su corazón.

31 »Usted, oh rey, tuvo una visión en la que había una gran estatua. Esa estatua era enorme y su brillo extraordinario; estaba en pie delante de usted y su aspecto era terrible(AS). 32 La cabeza de esta estatua era de oro(AT) puro, su pecho y sus brazos de plata, y su vientre y sus muslos de bronce, 33 sus piernas de hierro, sus pies en parte de hierro y en parte de barro. 34 La estuvo mirando hasta que una piedra fue cortada sin ayuda de manos(AU), y golpeó la estatua en sus pies de hierro y de barro, y los desmenuzó(AV). 35 Entonces fueron desmenuzados, todos a la vez[ac], el hierro, el barro, el bronce, la plata y el oro. Quedaron como el tamo(AW) de las eras en verano, y el viento se los llevó sin que quedara rastro alguno de ellos(AX). Y la piedra que había golpeado la estatua se convirtió en un gran monte(AY) que llenó toda la tierra.

36 »Este es el sueño. Ahora diremos ante el rey su interpretación(AZ). 37 Usted, oh rey, es rey de reyes, a quien el Dios del cielo ha dado el reino[ad](BA), el poder(BB), la fuerza y la gloria. 38 Y dondequiera que habiten los hijos de los hombres, las bestias del campo o las aves del cielo(BC), Él los ha entregado en su mano y lo ha hecho soberano de todos ellos; usted es la cabeza de oro.

39 »Después de usted se levantará otro reino, inferior a usted, y luego un tercer reino, de bronce, que gobernará sobre toda la tierra. 40 Y habrá un cuarto reino, tan fuerte como el hierro. Y así como el hierro desmenuza y destroza todas las cosas, como el hierro que tritura, así él desmenuzará y triturará a todos estos(BD).

41 »Lo que usted vio, los pies y los dedos, parte de barro de alfarero y parte de hierro, será un reino dividido. Pero tendrá la solidez del hierro, ya que vio el hierro mezclado con barro corriente[ae]. 42 Y así como los dedos de los pies eran parte de hierro y parte de barro cocido, también parte del reino será fuerte y parte será frágil. 43 En cuanto al hierro mezclado con barro corriente[af] que ha visto, se mezclarán mediante[ag] simiente humana. Pero no se unirán el uno con el otro, como no se mezcla el hierro con el barro.

44 »En los días de estos reyes, el Dios del cielo levantará un reino(BE) que jamás será destruido, y este reino no será entregado[ah](BF) a otro pueblo(BG). Desmenuzará(BH) y pondrá fin a todos aquellos reinos, y él permanecerá para siempre, 45 tal como usted vio que una piedra fue cortada del monte sin ayuda de manos y que desmenuzó el hierro, el bronce, el barro(BI), la plata y el oro. El gran Dios ha hecho saber al rey lo que sucederá en el futuro[ai](BJ). Así, pues, el sueño es verdadero y la interpretación fiel(BK)».

46 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor cayó sobre su rostro, se postró(BL) ante Daniel, y ordenó que le ofrecieran presentes[aj] e incienso[ak](BM). 47 El rey habló a Daniel, y le dijo: «En verdad que su Dios es Dios(BN) de dioses, Señor de reyes(BO) y revelador de misterios, ya que tú has podido revelar este misterio(BP)».

48 Entonces el rey engrandeció a Daniel y le dio muchos regalos espléndidos, y le hizo gobernador sobre toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe supremo[al](BQ) sobre todos los sabios de Babilonia(BR). 49 Por solicitud de Daniel, el rey puso sobre la administración de la provincia de Babilonia(BS) a Sadrac, Mesac y a Abed Nego, mientras que Daniel quedó en la corte[am] del rey(BT).

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream

2 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams;(A) his mind was troubled(B) and he could not sleep.(C) 2 So the king summoned the magicians,(D) enchanters, sorcerers(E) and astrologers[a](F) to tell him what he had dreamed.(G) When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles(H) me and I want to know what it means.[b]”

4 Then the astrologers answered the king,[c](I) “May the king live forever!(J) Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

5 The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided:(K) If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces(L) and your houses turned into piles of rubble.(M) 6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor.(N) So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”

7 Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”

8 Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: 9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty(O) for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”(P)

10 The astrologers(Q) answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.(R) 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods,(S) and they do not live among humans.”

12 This made the king so angry and furious(T) that he ordered the execution(U) of all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.(V)

14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.

17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(W) 18 He urged them to plead for mercy(X) from the God of heaven(Y) concerning this mystery,(Z) so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery(AA) was revealed to Daniel in a vision.(AB) Then Daniel praised the God of heaven(AC) 20 and said:

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;(AD)
    wisdom and power(AE) are his.
21 He changes times and seasons;(AF)
    he deposes(AG) kings and raises up others.(AH)
He gives wisdom(AI) to the wise
    and knowledge to the discerning.(AJ)
22 He reveals deep and hidden things;(AK)
    he knows what lies in darkness,(AL)
    and light(AM) dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:(AN)
    You have given me wisdom(AO) and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
    you have made known to us the dream of the king.(AP)”

Daniel Interprets the Dream

24 Then Daniel went to Arioch,(AQ) whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.”

25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles(AR) from Judah(AS) who can tell the king what his dream means.”

26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar),(AT) “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”

27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about,(AU) 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.(AV) He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.(AW) Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind(AX) as you were lying in bed(AY) are these:(AZ)

29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.(BA) 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed(BB) to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.

31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue,(BC) awesome(BD) in appearance. 32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands.(BE) It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed(BF) them.(BG) 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away(BH) without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain(BI) and filled the whole earth.(BJ)

36 “This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king.(BK) 37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings.(BL) The God of heaven has given you dominion(BM) and power and might and glory; 38 in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all.(BN) You are that head of gold.

39 “After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.(BO) 40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.(BP) 41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.

44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush(BQ) all those kingdoms(BR) and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.(BS) 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock(BT) cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands(BU)—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.

“The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future.(BV) The dream is true(BW) and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate(BX) before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering(BY) and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods(BZ) and the Lord of kings(CA) and a revealer of mysteries,(CB) for you were able to reveal this mystery.(CC)”

48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high(CD) position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.(CE) 49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon,(CF) while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.(CG)

2  És Nabukodonozor uralkodásának második esztendejében álmokat láta Nabukodonozor, és nyugtalan lõn az õ lelke, és álma félbeszakadt.

2 És mondá a király, hogy hívjanak írástudókat, varázslókat, bûbájosokat és Káldeusokat, hogy fejtsék meg a királynak az õ álmait; és bemenének azok, és állának a király elé.

3 És monda nékik a király: Álmot láttam, és nyugtalan a lelkem megtudni az álmot.

4 És mondák a Káldeusok a királynak sziriai nyelven: Király, örökké élj! mondd meg az álmot a te szolgáidnak, és megjelentjük az értelmét.

5 Felele a király, és monda a Káldeusoknak: Az én szavam áll! Ha tehát meg nem mondjátok nékem az álmot és annak értelmét, darabokra tépettek, és a ti házaitok szemétdombokká tétetnek.

6 Ha pedig az álmot és annak értelmét megjelentitek: ajándékokat, jutalmat és nagy tisztességet vesztek tõlem; ezért az álmot és annak értelmét jelentsétek meg nékem.

7 Felelének másodszor, és mondának: A király mondja meg az álmot az õ szolgáinak: és az értelmét megjelentjük.

8 Felele a király, és monda: Bizonnyal tudom én, hogy csak idõt akartok ti nyerni, mert látjátok, hogy áll az én szavam.

9 Hogy ha az álmot meg nem mondjátok nékem, [csak] egy ítélet lehet felõletek: hogy hamis és tétovázó beszédet koholtok, hogy azzal tartsatok engem, míg az idõ múlik. Mondjátok meg azért nékem az álmot, akkor tudom, hogy az értelmét is megjelenthetitek nékem.

10 Felelének a Káldeusok a királynak, és mondák: Nincs ember a földön, a ki a király dolgát megjelenthesse: mivelhogy bármilyen nagy és hatalmas király sem kívánt még egyetlen írástudótól, varázslótól és Káldeustól sem ilyen dolgot.

11 Mert a dolog, a mit a király kíván, igen nehéz, és nincs más, a ki azt megjelenthesse a király elõtt, hanemha az istenek, a kik nem lakoznak együtt az emberekkel.

12 E miatt a király megharaguvék és igen felgerjede, és meghagyá, hogy a babiloni bölcsek mind veszíttessenek el.

13 És a parancsolat kiméne, hogy öljék meg a bölcseket; és keresik vala Dánielt és az õ társait, hogy megölettessenek.

14 Ekkor Dániel bölcsen és értelmesen felele Arióknak, a királyi testõrség fejének, a ki kiment vala, hogy megölesse a babiloni bölcseket.

15 Szóla és monda Arióknak, a király fõemberének: Miért e kegyetlen parancsolat a királytól? Akkor Ariók elmondá a dolgot Dánielnek.

16 És beméne Dániel, és kéré a királyt, hogy adjon néki idõt, hogy megjelenthesse az értelmet a királynak.

17 Ekkor Dániel haza méne, és elmondá e dolgot Ananiásnak, Misáelnek és Azariásnak, az õ társainak:

18 Hogy kérjenek az egek Istenétõl irgalmasságot e titok végett, hogy el ne veszszenek Dániel és az õ társai a többi babiloni bölcsekkel együtt.

19 Akkor Dánielnek megjelenteték az a titok éjjeli látásban. Áldá akkor Dániel az egek Istenét.

20 Szóla Dániel, és monda: Áldott legyen az Istennek neve örökkön örökké: mert övé a bölcseség és az erõ.

21 És õ változtatja meg az idõket és az idõknek részeit; dönt királyokat és tesz királyokat; ád bölcseséget a bölcseknek és tudományt az értelmeseknek.

22 Õ jelenti meg a mély és elrejtett dolgokat, tudja mi van a setétségben; és világosság lakozik vele!

23 Néked adok hálát, atyáimnak Istene, és dicsérlek én téged, hogy bölcseséget és erõt adtál nékem, és mostan megjelentetted nékem, a mit kértünk tõled; mert a király dolgát megjelentetted nékünk!

24 Beméne azért Dániel Ariókhoz, a kit rendelt vala a király, hogy elveszítse a babiloni bölcseket; elméne azért, és mondá néki: A babiloni bölcseket ne veszíttesd el; vígy engem a király elé és a megfejtést tudtára adom a királynak.

25 Akkor Ariók sietve bevivé Dánielt a király elébe, és mondá: Találtam férfiút Júdának fogoly fiai között, a ki a megfejtést megjelenti a királynak.

26 Szóla a király, és monda Dánielnek, a kit Baltazárnak nevezének: Csakugyan képes vagy megjelenteni nékem az álmot, a melyet láttam, és annak értelmét?

27 Felele Dániel a király elõtt, és mondá: A titkot, a melyrõl a király tudakozódék, a bölcsek, varázslók, írástudók, jövendõmondók meg nem jelenthetik a királynak;

28 De van Isten az égben, a ki a titkokat megjelenti; és õ tudtára adta Nabukodonozor királynak: mi lészen az utolsó napokban. A te álmod és a te fejed látása a te ágyadban ez volt:

29 Néked, oh király! gondolataid támadtak a te ágyadban a felõl, hogy mik lesznek ez után, és a ki megjelenti a titkokat, megjelentette néked azt, a mi lesz.

30 Nékem pedig ez a titok nem bölcseségbõl, a mely bennem minden élõ felett volna, jelentetett meg, hanem azért, hogy a megfejtés tudtára adassék a királynak és te megértsed a te szívednek gondolatait.

31 Te látád, oh király, és ímé egy nagy kép; ez a kép, mely hatalmas vala és kiváló az õ fényessége, elõtted áll vala, és az ábrázata rettenetes volt.

32 Annak az [álló]képnek feje tiszta aranyból, melle és karjai ezüstbõl, hasa és oldalai rézbõl,

33 Lábszárai vasból, lábai pedig részint vasból, részint cserépbõl valának.

34 Nézed vala, a míg egy kõ leszakada kéz [érintése] nélkül, és letöré azt az [álló]képet vas- és cseréplábairól, és darabokra zúzá azokat.

35 Akkor egygyé zúzódék a vas, cserép, réz, ezüst és arany, és lõnek mint a nyári szérûn a polyva, és felkapá azokat a szél, és helyöket sem találák azoknak. Az a kõ pedig, a mely leüté az [álló]képet nagy hegygyé lõn, és betölté az egész földet.

36 Ez az álom, és értelmét is megmondjuk a királynak.

37 Te, oh király! királyok királya, kinek az egek Istene birodalmat, hatalmat, erõt és dicsõséget adott;

38 És valahol emberek fiai, mezei állatok és égi madarak lakoznak, a te kezedbe adta azokat, és úrrá tett téged mindezeken: Te vagy az arany-fej.

39 És utánad más birodalom támad, alábbvaló mint te; és egy másik, egy harmadik birodalom, rézbõl való, a mely az egész földön uralkodik.

40 A negyedik birodalom pedig erõs lesz, mint a vas; mert [miként] a vas széttör és összezúz mindent; bizony mint a vas pusztít, mind amazokat szétzúzza és elpusztítja.

41 Hogy pedig lábakat és ujjakat részint cserépbõl, részint vasból valónak láttál: a birodalom kétfelé oszol, de lesz benne a vasnak erejébõl, a mint láttad, hogy a vas elegy volt az agyagcseréppel.

42 És hogy a lába ujjai részint vas, részint cserép: az a birodalom részint erõs, részint pedig törékeny lesz.

43 Hogy pedig vasat elegyülve láttál agyagcseréppel: azok emberi mag által vegyülnek össze, de egymással nem egyesülnek, minthogy a vas nem egyesül a cseréppel.

44 És azoknak a királyoknak idejében támaszt az egek Istene birodalmat, mely soha örökké meg nem romol, és ez a birodalom más népre nem száll át [hanem] szétzúzza és elrontja mindazokat a birodalmakat, maga pedig megáll örökké.

45 Minthogy láttad, hogy a hegyrõl kõ szakad vala le kéz [érintése] nélkül, és szétzúzá a vasat, rezet, cserepet, ezüstöt és aranyat: a nagy Isten azt jelentette meg a királynak, a mi majd ezután lészen; és igaz az álom, és bizonyos annak értelme.

46 Akkor Nabukodonozor király arczra borula és imádá Dánielt, és meghagyá, hogy ételáldozattal és jó illattal áldozzanak néki.

47 Szóla a király Dánielnek, és monda: Bizonynyal a ti Istenetek, õ az isteneknek Istene, és a királyoknak ura és a titkok megjelentõje, hogy te is megjelenthetted ezt a titkot!

48 Akkor a király fölmagasztalá Dánielt, és sok nagy ajándékot ada néki, és hatalmat adott néki Babilonnak egész tartománya felett, és a babiloni összes bölcseknek elõljárójává tevé õt.

49 És Dániel kéré a királyt, hogy Sidrákot, Misákot és Abednégót rendelje a babiloni tartomány gondviselésére; Dániel pedig a király udvarában vala.
