El sueño del rey
2 En el año segundo del reinado de Nabucodonosor, este tuvo sueños[a], y se turbó su espíritu(A) y no podía dormir[b](B). 2 Mandó llamar el rey[c] a los magos[d], los encantadores, los hechiceros y a los caldeos[e], para que le explicaran al rey sus sueños(C). Vinieron, pues, y se presentaron ante el rey. 3 Y el rey les dijo: He tenido un sueño[f](D), y mi espíritu se ha turbado por el deseo de entender[g] el sueño.
4 Y hablaron los caldeos al rey en arameo[h](E): ¡Oh rey, vive para siempre(F)! Cuenta el sueño a tus siervos, y nosotros te declararemos la interpretación(G). 5 El rey respondió y dijo a los caldeos: Mis órdenes son firmes[i]: si no me dais a conocer el sueño y su interpretación, seréis descuartizados y vuestras casas serán reducidas a escombros[j](H). 6 Pero si me declaráis el sueño y su interpretación, recibiréis de mí regalos, recompensas y grandes honores; por tanto, declaradme el sueño y su interpretación(I). 7 Respondieron ellos por segunda vez, y dijeron: Refiera el rey su sueño a sus siervos, y declararemos la interpretación(J). 8 Respondió el rey, y dijo: Ciertamente sé que queréis ganar[k] tiempo, porque veis que mis órdenes son firmes, 9 que si no me declaráis el sueño, hay una sola sentencia[l](K) para vosotros. Porque os habéis concertado para hablar delante de mí palabras falsas y perversas[m](L) hasta que cambie la situación[n]. Por tanto, decidme el sueño para que yo sepa que me podéis dar su interpretación. 10 Los caldeos respondieron al[o] rey, y dijeron: No hay hombre sobre la tierra que pueda declarar el asunto al[p] rey, puesto que ningún gran rey o gobernante jamás ha pedido cosa semejante a ningún mago[q], encantador o caldeo(M). 11 Lo que el rey demanda es difícil y no hay nadie que lo pueda declarar(N) al[r] rey sino los dioses cuya morada no está entre los hombres[s](O). 12 A causa de esto el rey se indignó y se enfureció(P) en gran manera y mandó matar a todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 Y se publicó el decreto[t] de que mataran a todos los sabios; buscaron también a Daniel y a sus amigos(Q) para matarlos.
14 Entonces Daniel habló con discreción y sensatez a Arioc, capitán de la guardia[u] del rey, que había salido para matar a los sabios de Babilonia(R); 15 habló y dijo a Arioc, capitán del rey: ¿Por qué es tan riguroso[v] el decreto[w] del rey? Entonces Arioc informó a Daniel sobre el asunto. 16 Y Daniel fue a pedirle al rey que le diera tiempo[x] para declarar la interpretación al rey.
17 Entonces Daniel fue a su casa e informó el asunto a sus amigos Ananías, Misael y Azarías(S), 18 para que pidieran misericordia del Dios del cielo acerca de este misterio(T), a fin de que no perecieran Daniel y sus amigos con el resto(U) de los sabios de Babilonia. 19 Entonces el misterio fue revelado a Daniel en una visión de noche(V). Daniel entonces bendijo al Dios del cielo. 20 Daniel habló, y dijo:
Sea el nombre de Dios bendito por los siglos de los siglos(W),
porque la sabiduría y el poder son de Él(X).
21 Él es quien cambia los tiempos y las edades(Y);
quita reyes y pone reyes(Z);
da sabiduría a los sabios,
y conocimiento a los entendidos[y](AA).
22 Él es quien revela lo profundo y lo escondido(AB);
conoce lo que está en tinieblas(AC),
y la luz mora con Él(AD).
23 A ti, Dios de mis padres(AE), doy yo gracias y alabo,
porque me has dado sabiduría y poder(AF),
y ahora me has revelado lo que te habíamos pedido,
pues el asunto del rey nos has dado a conocer(AG).
24 Después fue Daniel adonde estaba Arioc, a quien el rey había designado para dar muerte a los sabios de Babilonia(AH). Fue y le habló así: No des muerte a los sabios de Babilonia; llévame ante el rey, y declararé al rey la interpretación.
25 Entonces Arioc se apresuró a llevar a Daniel ante el rey(AI), y le dijo así: He hallado a un hombre entre los deportados[z] de Judá(AJ) que dará a conocer al rey la interpretación. 26 El rey respondió, y dijo a Daniel, a quien llamaban Beltsasar: ¿Eres tú capaz de darme a conocer el sueño que he visto y su interpretación(AK)? 27 Respondió Daniel ante el rey, y dijo: En cuanto al misterio que el rey quiere saber, no hay sabios, encantadores, magos[aa] ni adivinos que puedan declararlo al rey(AL). 28 Pero hay un Dios en el cielo que revela los misterios(AM), y Él ha dado a conocer al rey Nabucodonosor lo que sucederá al fin de los días(AN). Tu sueño y las visiones que has tenido[ab] en tu cama(AO) eran estos: 29 A ti, oh rey, en tu cama te surgieron pensamientos sobre lo que habrá de suceder en el futuro[ac], y el que revela los misterios te ha dado a conocer lo que sucederá(AP). 30 En cuanto a mí, me ha sido revelado este misterio, no porque yo tenga[ad] más sabiduría que cualquier otro viviente, sino con el fin de dar a conocer al rey la interpretación(AQ), y para que tú entiendas los pensamientos(AR) de tu corazón.
31 Tú, oh rey, tuviste una visión, y he aquí, había una gran estatua; esa estatua era enorme y su brillo extraordinario; estaba en pie delante de ti y su aspecto era terrible(AS). 32 La cabeza de esta estatua era de oro(AT) puro, su pecho y sus brazos de plata, y su vientre y sus muslos de bronce, 33 sus piernas de hierro, sus pies en parte de hierro y en parte de barro. 34 Estuviste mirando hasta que una piedra fue cortada sin ayuda de manos(AU), y golpeó la estatua en sus pies de hierro y de barro, y los desmenuzó(AV). 35 Entonces fueron desmenuzados, todos a la vez[ae], el hierro, el barro, el bronce, la plata y el oro; quedaron como el tamo(AW) de las eras en verano, y el viento se los llevó sin que quedara rastro alguno de ellos(AX). Y la piedra que había golpeado la estatua se convirtió en un gran monte(AY) que llenó toda la tierra.
36 Este es el sueño; ahora diremos ante el rey su interpretación(AZ). 37 Tú, oh rey, eres rey de reyes, a quien el Dios del cielo ha dado el reino[af](BA), el poder(BB), la fuerza y la gloria; 38 y dondequiera que habiten los hijos de los hombres, las bestias del campo o las aves del cielo(BC), Él los ha entregado en tu mano y te ha hecho soberano de todos ellos; tú eres la cabeza de oro. 39 Después de ti se levantará otro reino, inferior a ti, y luego un tercer reino, de bronce, que gobernará sobre toda la tierra. 40 Y habrá un cuarto reino, tan fuerte como el hierro; y así como el hierro desmenuza y destroza todas las cosas, como el hierro que tritura, así él desmenuzará y triturará a todos estos(BD). 41 Y lo que viste, los pies y los dedos, parte de barro de alfarero y parte de hierro, será un reino dividido; pero tendrá la solidez del hierro, ya que viste el hierro mezclado con barro corriente[ag]. 42 Y así como los dedos de los pies eran parte de hierro y parte de barro cocido, así parte del reino será fuerte y parte será frágil. 43 En cuanto al hierro mezclado con barro corriente[ah] que has visto, se mezclarán mediante[ai] simiente humana; pero no se unirán el uno con el otro, como no se mezcla el hierro con el barro. 44 En los días de estos reyes, el Dios del cielo levantará un reino(BE) que jamás será destruido, y este reino no será entregado[aj](BF) a otro pueblo(BG); desmenuzará(BH) y pondrá fin a todos aquellos reinos, y él permanecerá para siempre, 45 tal como viste que una piedra fue cortada del monte sin ayuda de manos y que desmenuzó el hierro, el bronce, el barro(BI), la plata y el oro. El gran Dios ha hecho saber al rey lo que sucederá en el futuro[ak](BJ). Así, pues, el sueño es verdadero y la interpretación fiel(BK).
46 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor cayó sobre su rostro, se postró(BL) ante Daniel, y ordenó que le ofrecieran presentes[al] e incienso[am](BM). 47 El rey habló a Daniel, y dijo: En verdad que vuestro Dios es Dios(BN) de dioses, Señor de reyes(BO) y revelador de misterios, ya que tú has podido revelar este misterio(BP). 48 Entonces el rey engrandeció a Daniel y le dio muchos y espléndidos regalos, y le hizo gobernador sobre toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe supremo[an](BQ) sobre todos los sabios de Babilonia(BR). 49 Por solicitud de Daniel, el rey puso sobre la administración de la provincia de Babilonia(BS) a Sadrac, Mesac y a Abed-nego, mientras que Daniel quedó en la corte[ao] del rey(BT).

El sueño de la estatua
2 El año segundo de su reinado, Nabucodonosor tuvo unos sueños que turbaron su espíritu y no le dejaban dormir. 2 El rey ordenó llamar a los magos, adivinos, hechiceros y astrólogos para que interpretaran sus sueños. 3 Una vez que comparecieron ante su presencia, el rey les dijo:
— He tenido un sueño y estoy intrigado por conocer su sentido.
4 Los astrólogos respondieron al rey en arameo:
— ¡Larga vida al rey! Cuenta el sueño a tus siervos y daremos con su interpretación.
5 El rey les respondió:
— He tomado una determinación: como no me cuenten el sueño y den con su interpretación, serán cortados en pedazos y sus casas serán demolidas. 6 Pero, si me cuentan el sueño y dan con su interpretación, les colmaré de regalos, obsequios y honores. Les conviene, pues, contarme el sueño y dar con su interpretación.
7 Ellos insistieron:
— Que el rey nos cuente su sueño y nosotros daremos con su interpretación.
8 El rey respondió:
— Me parece que intentan ganar tiempo, pues saben que he tomado la determinación de 9 hacerlos reos de una misma sentencia si no son capaces de contarme el sueño. Seguro que se han puesto de acuerdo para mentirme y engañarme, en espera de que cambie la situación. Así que cuéntenme de una vez el sueño; de ese modo me convenceré de que también son capaces de interpretarlo.
10 Los astrólogos respondieron al rey:
— No hay nadie en el mundo que pueda responder a lo que pide su majestad. Y tampoco ha existido un rey, por muy grande y poderoso que haya sido, que haya preguntado cosa semejante a ningún mago, adivino o astrólogo. 11 Lo que pide su majestad es algo muy difícil. Nadie puede darlo a conocer al rey, excepto los dioses, que no habitan entre los mortales.
12 Entonces el rey se enfureció sobremanera y mandó acabar con todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 Una vez hecha pública la orden de matar a los sabios, se buscó a Daniel y a sus compañeros, pues también a ellos les afectaba la orden real. 14 Pero cuando Arioc, jefe de la guardia real, iba a cumplir la orden de matar a los sabios de Babilonia, Daniel hizo gala de su prudencia y sensatez, 15 y le preguntó:
— ¿Por qué ha promulgado el rey una orden tan severa?
16 Cuando Arioc le puso al corriente de la situación, Daniel pidió audiencia y propuso al rey que le concediese un plazo para dar con la interpretación del sueño.
Daniel solicita la ayuda del Señor
17 Cuando volvió a casa, Daniel informó del asunto a sus compañeros Ananías, Misael y Azarías, 18 y les pidió que imploraran la misericordia del Dios del cielo para poder descifrar aquel misterio. De otro modo, Daniel y sus compañeros morirían junto con los demás sabios de Babilonia. 19 El misterio le fue revelado a Daniel en una visión nocturna. Entonces bendijo al Dios del cielo 20 con estas palabras:
Sea el nombre de Dios
bendito por siempre;
suyos son sabiduría y poder.
21 Él hace que se alternen
años y estaciones;
él entroniza reyes
y él mismo los destrona.
Concede sabiduría a los sabios
y ciencia a los perspicaces.
22 Revela lo profundo y lo secreto,
conoce lo que ocultan las sombras
y la luz mora junto a él.
23 Te alabo y te doy gracias,
Dios de mis antepasados,
pues me das sabiduría y poder,
me revelas lo que habíamos pedido
y me manifiestas el asunto del rey.
Daniel interpreta el sueño
24 Daniel fue después donde estaba Arioc, a quien el rey había dado orden de ejecutar a los sabios de Babilonia, y le dijo:
— No ejecutes a los sabios de Babilonia. Preséntame ante el rey y yo le interpretaré el sueño.
25 Arioc llevó a Daniel sin pérdida de tiempo ante el rey, y le dijo:
— He encontrado entre los deportados de Judá a uno que dice ser capaz de interpretar el sueño de su majestad.
26 El rey dijo a Daniel (apodado Baltasar):
— ¿De verdad eres capaz de contarme el sueño que he tenido y de interpretarlo?
27 Daniel respondió:
— No hay ningún sabio, adivino, mago o astrólogo capaz de descifrarle a su majestad ese misterio. 28 En cambio, hay un Dios en el cielo que revela misterios y que ha dado a conocer al rey Nabucodonosor lo que sucederá al final de los tiempos. El sueño y las visiones que tuviste mientras dormías son como siguen:
29 — Majestad, mientras estabas acostado, reflexionabas intentando saber lo que sucederá en el futuro. Pues bien, el que revela misterios te ha dado a conocer lo que sucederá. 30 A mí precisamente se me ha revelado este misterio, no porque mi sabiduría sea superior a la de los demás, sino para poner en conocimiento de su majestad la interpretación del sueño y para que comprendas los pensamientos que te turban.
31 Majestad, la visión que tuviste es la siguiente: Ante ti se alzaba una estatua enorme, de brillo deslumbrante y aspecto terrible. 32 La cabeza de la estatua era de oro puro, su pecho y brazos de plata, y su vientre y sus caderas de bronce; 33 sus piernas eran de hierro, y sus pies mitad de hierro y mitad de barro. 34 Mientras la contemplabas, se desprendió una piedra sin que interviniera fuerza alguna, chocó contra los pies de hierro y barro de la estatua y los hizo añicos. 35 Al mismo tiempo, todo quedó pulverizado: el hierro con el barro, el bronce, la plata y el oro. Todo quedó como el tamo de la era que el viento arrebata en verano sin dejar rastro. Pero la piedra que había chocado contra la estatua se convirtió en una montaña enorme, que cubrió toda la tierra.
36 Este fue el sueño. Ahora le ofreceremos a su majestad la interpretación. 37 Tú, majestad, rey de reyes, has recibido del Dios del cielo imperio, poder, fuerza y gloria. 38 Él ha puesto en tus manos a los seres humanos, las bestias del campo y las aves del cielo, allí donde habiten, y te ha dado dominio sobre todo ello. Eso quiere decir que tú eres la cabeza de oro. 39 Después de ti surgirá otro reino inferior al tuyo, y a continuación un tercer reino de bronce que dominará toda la tierra. 40 Después aparecerá un cuarto reino, duro como el hierro que todo lo tritura y pulveriza; del mismo modo que el hierro, él triturará y pulverizará a todos los demás. 41 Los pies y los dedos que viste, mitad de barro de alfarero y mitad de hierro, significan que habrá un reino dividido: será sólido como el hierro, pues viste cómo el barro estaba mezclado con hierro. 42 Los dedos de los pies, mitad de hierro y mitad de barro, significan que el reino será al mismo tiempo sólido y frágil. 43 Los linajes se mezclarán, del mismo modo que viste mezclados hierro y barro, pero no se fundirán, pues hierro y barro no pueden fundirse. 44 En tiempo de estos reyes, el Dios del cielo hará que surja un reino que nunca será destruido. No cederá su poder a otros pueblos, antes bien hará trizas y aniquilará a los otros reinos; y él subsistirá para siempre. 45 Este es el significado de la piedra que viste desprenderse del monte sin intervención de fuerza alguna, la piedra que hizo añicos el hierro, el bronce, el barro, la plata y el oro. El gran Dios ha revelado a su majestad los acontecimientos del futuro. El sueño es verdadero, y su interpretación fidedigna.
Resultados de la interpretación
46 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor cayó rostro en tierra ante Daniel y mandó que le presentaran ofrendas y le dieran perfumes. 47 Después el rey dijo a Daniel:
— Está claro que el Dios de ustedes es Dios de dioses, Señor de reyes y revelador de misterios, pues tú has conseguido desvelar este misterio.
48 Después el rey honró a Daniel y le hizo muchos y magníficos regalos. Lo nombró gobernador de la provincia de Babilonia y jefe supremo de todos los sabios de Babilonia. 49 Daniel suplicó al rey que concediera la administración de la provincia de Babilonia a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, y así lo hizo. Daniel, por su parte, se quedó en la corte.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of the Shattered Statue[a]
Chapter 2
The King’s Dream. 1 During the second year of his reign, King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that troubled him deeply and made sleep impossible. 2 Therefore, the king commanded that the magicians, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans[b] were to be summoned to interpret his dream. When they arrived and stood in his presence, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream, and my mind is troubled because I have been unable to interpret it.” 4 The Chaldeans replied to the king in Aramaic,[c] “May you live forever, O king. Relate your dream to us, your servants, and we will reveal its meaning to you.”
5 The king answered the Chaldeans, “This is what I have decided to do. If you are unable to tell me both the dream I had and its meaning, I will command that you be torn limb from limb, and your houses will be totally destroyed. 6 However, if you are able to tell me what I dreamed and its meaning, I will present you with gifts, rewards, and great honors. Therefore, tell me the content of the dream and its meaning.”
7 They replied a second time, “Let the king first reveal his dream to his servants, and we shall interpret its meaning for you.” 8 But the king responded, “It is clear to me that you are stalling for time, since you know what I have already resolved to do. 9 If you are unable to interpret my dream for me, there will only be one verdict for you. You have obviously decided to stall for time in the hope that some compromise may be reached. Therefore, relate the content of my dream to me so that I will be able to determine whether you can interpret it correctly.”
10 The Chaldeans answered the king, “There is not a man on earth who can do what you request, O king. Never has there been a king, no matter how great or powerful, who has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. 11 What you are requiring of us is much too difficult, and no one can satisfy the king’s demand except for the gods, whose dwelling is not among mortals.”
12 On hearing this, the king flew into a violent rage and ordered that all the wise men of Babylon were to be put to death. 13 There-fore, the decree was issued for their execution, and a search was also made for Daniel and his companions so that they also might be executed.
14 As Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, prepared to execute the wise men of Babylon, Daniel approached him, and with prudent words and discretion 15 he said to him, “May I ask you why the king has issued such a harsh decree?” When Arioch explained what had occurred, 16 Daniel went off and asked the king to decree a stay of execution so that he might have the opportunity to offer his interpretation to the king.
17 The Prayer of Daniel. Then Daniel went home and informed his companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, what had happened. 18 He also asked them to implore the God of heaven[d] for his mercy in regard to the mystery so that he and his companions might not perish along with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision during the night, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 This is what Daniel said,
“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
for wisdom and power are his.
21 He directs the changes of the times and seasons;
he controls the appointment and the removal of kings.
He endows the wise with wisdom
and confers knowledge on those who have understanding.
22 He reveals deep and hidden mysteries
and knows what lies in the darkness,
for light dwells with him.
23 To you, O God of my fathers,
I offer thanks and praise
because you have given me wisdom and power.
Now you have made known to me
what we asked of you;
you have revealed to us the king’s dream.”
24 The Statue Turned Upside Down.[e]Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had designated to execute the wise men of Babylon, and he said to him, “Do not put the wise men of Babylon to death. Bring me into the presence of the king, and I will reveal to him the interpretation of the dream.”
25 Arioch immediately brought Daniel to the king and said to him, “Among the exiles from Judah I have located a man who can reveal the meaning of the dream to the king.” 26 The king said to Daniel, “Are you able to tell me the dream that I experienced and to reveal its meaning to me?”
27 Daniel stood in the king’s presence and replied, “None of the wise men, the enchanters, the sorcerers, or the astrologers has been able to explain to the king the dream about which you have been so disturbed. 28 However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has disclosed to King Nebuchadnezzar what is to take place at the end of this age. These were the dreams and the visions that passed through your head as you lay in your bed.
29 “While you were lying there, O king, thoughts came to you about what would happen in the future, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what will take place. 30 This mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than any living person, but for the sole purpose that the interpretation may be made known to you and also that you may understand the thoughts that have entered your mind.
31 “In the vision that you had, Your Majesty, you beheld a huge statue that was dazzling in its brightness. It stood before you, frightening in its appearance. 32 The head of the statue was of fine gold, its chest and its arms were of silver, its belly and its thighs were of bronze, 33 its legs were of iron, and its feet were partly of iron and partly of clay.
34 “While you were gazing at the statue, a stone broke away, untouched by any human hand, and struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, shattering them to pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were all shattered into pieces as fine as the chaff on the threshing floor during the summer. The wind carried them away without leaving a trace. However, the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the entire earth.
36 “That was the dream. Now we shall offer to the king its interpretation. 37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom with its power, its might, and its glory. 38 He has entrusted to your care men, wild beasts, and birds of the air, wherever they may dwell. You are the head of gold.
39 “After you another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours, followed by a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over the whole earth. 40 There will then be a fourth kingdom, as strong as iron. Just as iron crushes and smashes everything to pieces, it will crush and pulverize all the other kingdoms.
41 “Like the feet and the toes that you saw, composed partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but it will have some of the strength of iron just as you saw the iron mixed with the clay tile. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly potter’s clay, the kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with the clay, so will the people mix together in marriage, but they will not remain united, just as iron does not mix with clay.
44 “In the times of those kings, the God of heaven shall establish a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor shall this kingdom fall under the power of another people. It shall crush all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall endure forever. 45 This is the meaning of your vision of the stone untouched by human hands being hewn from the mountain and crushing the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true, and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
46 Nebuchadnezzar Prostrates Himself before God. Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate and paid homage to Daniel, and he gave orders that a grain offering and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and the revealer of mysteries. That is why you were able to reveal this mystery.”
48 Then the king conferred a high rank on Daniel and gave him many handsome gifts. He also appointed him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Furthermore, at Daniel’s request, the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego as administrators of the province of Babylon. However, Daniel remained at the king’s court.

- Daniel 2:1 How was the author to circulate subversive writings on the coming end of the reign of Antiochus IV, without naming the king? How was he to proclaim the coming of God’s reign, when a pagan prince was in control? Here is one of the stories that, doubtless, circulated behind the king’s back. To a small extent it makes use of the story of Joseph at the pharaoh’s court (Gen 41), but draws more direct and important conclusions. In this allegory, dreams, which the ancients considered a means used by divinities to communicate with human beings, play an important part. Dreams serve chiefly as a literary device for writers of apocalypses, such as the Book of Daniel.

God will finally destroy these regimes and establish another kingdom, his own, which will be everlasting.
